The motives behind the Bush administration’s latest terror scare

by Jerry White

Global Research, World Socialist Web Site

July 30, 2007

Over the last two weeks the Bush administration has orchestrated yet another campaign to sow fear and anxiety among the American people with unsubstantiated claims that signs are mounting of a looming Al Qaeda terrorist attack.

Not a day goes by without suggestions by Bush or top Homeland Security officials that an attack perhaps on the scale of 9/11, or worse, is being prepared. As always, the mass media dutifully report such claims as authoritative, without questioning the lack of evidence beyond the bald assertions of intelligence and other government officials.

The deliberate cultivation of a climate of fear is a basic modus operandi of the Bush White House. Can it be an accident that Bush is once again resorting to scare tactics at a time when his poll numbers are dropping to record lows, popular opposition to the war in Iraq is rising, and the administration is openly declaring that its war policy will not be bound by elections or debates in Congress? The sudden reemergence of Al Qaeda as a supposed threat to the safety and security of every American coincides with a political counteroffensive in which critics of Bush’s military escalation are branded as either dupes or aiders and abettors of the terrorists.

The terror scare serves three basic political functions: to divert public attention from the disaster in Iraq and the social crisis within the US, to justify a foreign policy based on militarism and war, and to provide a pretext for police state measures at home.

What has happened over the last two weeks?

* On July 10, Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff gave an interview to the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune in which he said the US was facing a heightened threat of attacks this summer. He gave no evidence of such a serious risk, other than saying he had a “gut feeling” an attack was being prepared. Why America’s top anti-terrorist officialwho has at his disposal vast resources, including information gathered by US spy agencies around the worldwould have to rely on a his gut, rather than concrete evidence, Chertoff did not say.

* On July 17, the Bush administration released an unclassified summary of its National Intelligence Estimate, which claimed the US was facing a “heightened threat environment” for terrorist attacks because Al Qaeda had found a safe haven in Pakistan’s tribal areas, from where it could plot such attacks. The Bush administration immediately seized upon the report, ominously entitled “The Terrorist Threat to the Homeland,” as a pretext for possible military intervention in Pakistan and a justification for his war policy in Iraq as well as further domestic surveillance measures at home.

* On July 24, Bush gave a near-hysterical speech at a South Carolina air force base, where he insisted that the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq would result in terrorist attacks on the US. He repeated the absurd claim that US troops in Iraq were “fighting bin Laden’s Al Qaeda” and said that following the advice of those advocating a draw-down of US troops in Iraq would be “disastrous for America.”

* The same day, Air Force General Victor Renuart, who heads the US Northern Command, established by the Bush administration to oversee military operations within the US, told the Associated Press that the American military needs to triple its domestic military forces to counter the growing threat from Al Qaeda, which, he claimed, was actively preparing another terrorist attack in the US. “I believe there are cells in the United States, or at least people who aspire to create cells in the United States,” Renuart said.

He called the National Intelligence Estimate a “summary of drumbeats, and the drumbeats are getting more prevalent out there. You cannot afford to ignore that.” Asked if he was concerned about an attack in the US this summer, he replied, “I have to be concerned that it could happen any day.”

* Over the past few days, television news broadcasts have prominently featured a recent alert issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), warning federal air marshals and other law enforcement agencies to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft. The July 20 warning was based on the seizure of “curious” items found in the luggage of a handful of passengers over the last year, including “wires, pipes or tubes, cell phone components and dense clay-like substances,” such as blocks of cheese. Security officers were instructed to keep any eye out for “ordinary items that look like improvised explosive device components,” because they might be used to test airport security.

The agency admitted, however, that none of the passengers with any of these items were found to have any connections to criminal or terrorist organizations. TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe subsequently downplayed the story, saying Tuesday, “There is no credible, specific threat here. Don’t panic. We do these things all the time.”

Her remarks follow a well-established pattern. The government issues dire warnings which are given sensationalist coverage by the media. In most cases, there follow acknowledgments that the government has no concrete evidence of a specific terrorist plot. Why, then, the gratuitous alarms? The media never bothers to ask a government official to explain.

This has been the stock-in-trade of the Bush administration since the 9/11 terrorist attacksan event which itself has never been seriously investigated and for which no accounting has been given of supposed intelligence lapses that point to the possible complicity of the government itself.

At numerous points in Bush’s tenure, terror warnings have been issued in the midst of damaging revelations and political events that shook the administration. For example, two days after the May 18, 2002 revelation that Bush had received a presidential briefing five weeks before 9/11, warning of a terrorist attack within the US, FBI director Robert Mueller announced more attacks were “inevitable.” The next day, officials declared that US railroads and key New York City monuments were threatened.

In the days following Secretary of State Colin Powell’s February 2003 speech at the UN, where he claimed the US had incontrovertible evidence that Iraq had WMDs, and mass international anti-war demonstrations on February 15, a US official warned of potential bio-terror attacks and advised Americans to stock up on duct tape and plastic sheeting to protect themselves.

Similar unsubstantiated warnings followed the Abu Ghraib revelations of US torture of Iraqi detainees, the revelation of CIA doubts about false pre-war claims that Iraq attempted to purchase uranium from Niger, the 9/11 Commission’s conclusion that the attacks were preventable, and news that Karl Rove might be indicted in the CIA leak case.

The Bush administration has set out to make fear and anxiety over terrorism the center of public life. It hopes to appeal to the confusion of more backward sections of the population in order to bludgeon popular opposition to its agenda of militarism and political repression at home.

In so doing, Bush has enjoyed the support of the Democratic Party, which, far from exposing this cynical attempt to manipulate public opinion, has fully embraced the so-called “war on terror.” The Democrats have frequently attacked Bush for not going far enough in “securing the homeland.”

There is no doubt that the brutal neo-colonialist foreign policy of the US government has placed the American people in danger of another terrorist attack. However, the greatest threat to the democratic rights and safety of the American people, and the people of the world, comes not from Islamic extremists in the Middle East, but from US imperialism and the warmongers in Washington.

White House says spying broader than known: report

Reuters Photo: Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell delivers remarks at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington,…

Wed Aug 1, 12:28 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Bush administration’s top intelligence official has acknowledged that a controversial domestic surveillance program was only one part of a much broader spying effort, The Washington Post reported in its Wednesday edition.

Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell wrote in a letter that other aspects of the National Security Agency’s domestic spying program remain classified, the Post said.

“That is the only aspect of the NSA activities that can be discussed publicly because it is the only aspect of those various activities whose existence has been officially acknowledged,” McConnell wrote, according to the Post.

Bush acknowledged the existence of a program that monitored domestic phone calls and e-mails without court oversight in December 2005. The administration has not confirmed other secret spying efforts reported by news outlets, such as one that searched millions of telephone records.

Bush signed an executive order that authorized “a number of … intelligence activities” following the hijacking attacks of September 11, 2001, McConnell wrote.

The warrantless wiretapping program was put under court supervision in January but the administration now wants Congress to allow it to do many of the same activities without a court order.

The letter was sent on Tuesday to Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The letter was written to defend Attorney General Alberto

Gonzales, who has been under attack over his testimony to Congress about the warrantless spying program, the Post said.

US Dictatorship : Will Bush Cancel The 2008 Election?

Will Bush Cancel The 2008 Election?

by Harvey Wasserman & Bob Fitrakis

Published on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 by CommonDreams.org

It is time to think about the “unthinkable.”

The Bush Administration has both the inclination and the power to cancel the 2008 election.

The GOP strategy for another electoral theft in 2008 has taken clear shape, though we must assume there is much more we don’t know.

But we must also assume that if it appears to Team Bush/Cheney/Rove that the GOP will lose the 2008 election anyway (as it lost in Ohio 2006) we cannot ignore the possibility that they would simply cancel the election. Those who think this crew will quietly walk away from power are simply not paying attention.

The real question is not how or when they might do it. It’s how, realistically, we can stop them.

In Florida 2000, Team Bush had a game plan involving a handful of tactics. With Jeb Bush in the governor’s mansion, the GOP used a combination of disenfranchisement, intimidation, faulty ballots, electronic voting fraud, a rigged vote count and an aborted recount, courtesy of the US Supreme Court.

A compliant Democrat (Al Gore) allowed the coup to be completed.

In Ohio 2004, the arsenal of dirty tricks exploded. Based in Columbus, we have documented more than a hundred different tactics used to steal the 20 electoral votes that gave Bush a second term. More are still surfacing. As a result of the King-Lincoln-Bronzeville federal lawsuit (in which we are plaintiff and attorney) we have now been informed that 56 of the 88 counties in Ohio violated federal law by destroying election records, thus preventing a definitive historical recount.

As in 2000, a compliant Democrat (John Kerry) allowed the coup to proceed.

For 2008 we expect the list of vote theft maneuvers to escalate yet again. We are already witnessing a coordinated nationwide drive to destroy voter registration organizations and to disenfranchise millions of minority, poor and young voters.

This carefully choreographed campaign is complemented by the widespread use of electronic voting machines. As reported by the Government Accountability Office, Princeton University, the Brennan Center, the Carter-Baker Commission, US Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) and others, these machines can be easily used to flip an election. They were integral to stealing both the 2000 and 2004 elections. Efforts to make their source codes transparent, or to require a usable paper trail on a federal level, have thus far failed. A discriminatory Voter ID requirement may also serve as the gateway to a national identification card.

Overall, the GOP will have at its command even more weapons of election theft in 2008 than it did in Ohio 2004, which jumped exponentially from Florida 2000. The Rovian GOP is nothing if not tightly organized to do this with ruthless efficiency. Expect everything that was used these past two presidential elections to surface again in 2008 in far more states, with far more efficiency, and many new dirty tricks added in.

But in Ohio 2006, the GOP learned a hard lesson. Its candidate for governor was J. Kenneth Blackwell. The Secretary of State was the essential on-the-ground operative in the theft of Ohio 2004.

When he announced for governor, many Ohioans joked that “Ken Blackwell will never lose an election where he counts the votes.”

But lose he did….along with the GOP candidates for Secretary of State, Attorney-General and US Senate.

By our calculations, despite massive grassroots scrutiny, the Republicans stole in excess of 6% of the Ohio vote in 2006. But they still lost.

Why? Because they were so massively unpopular that even a 6% bump couldn’t save them. Outgoing Governor Bob Taft, who pled guilty to four misdemeanors while in office, left town with a 7% approval rating (that’s not a typo). Blackwell entered the last week of the campaign down 30% in some polls.

So while the GOP still had control of the electoral machinery here in 2006, the public tide against them was simply too great to hold back, even through the advanced art and science of modern Rovian election theft.

In traditional electoral terms, that may also be the case in 2008. Should things proceed as they are now, it’s hard to imagine any Republican candidate going into the election within striking distance. The potential variations are many, but the graffiti on the wall is clear.

What’s also clear is that this administration has a deep, profound and uncompromised contempt for democracy, for the rule of law, and for the US Constitution. When George W. Bush went on the record (twice) as saying he has nothing against dictatorship, as long as he can be dictator, it was a clear and present policy statement.

Who really believes this crew will walk quietly away from power? They have the motivation, the money and the method for doing away with the electoral process altogether. So why wouldn’t they?

The groundwork for dismissal of both the legislative and judicial branch has been carefully laid. The litany is well-known, but worth a very partial listing:

The continuation of the drug war, and the Patriot Act, Homeland Security Act and other dictatorial laws prompted by the 9/11/2001 terror attacks, have decimated the Bill of Rights, and shredded the traditional American right to due process of law, freedom from official surveillance, arbitrary violence, and far more.

The current Attorney-General, Alberto Gonzales, has not backed away from his announcement to Congress that the Constitution does not guarantee habeas corpus. The administration continues to act on the assumption that it can arrest anyone at any time and hold them without notification or trial for as long as it wants.

The establishment of the Homeland Security Agency has given it additional hardware to decimate the basic human rights of our citizenry. Under the guise of dealing with the “immigration problem,” large concentration camps are under construction around the US.

The administration has endorsed and is exercising its “right” to employ torture, contrary to the Eighth Amendment and to a wide range of international treaties, which Gonzales has labeled “quaint.”

With more than 200 “signing statements” the administration acts on its belief that the “unitary executive” trumps the power of the legislative branch in any instance it chooses. This belief has been further enforced with the administration’s use of a wide range of precedent-setting arguments to keep its functionaries from testifying before Congress.

There is much more. In all instances, the 109th Congressand the publichave rolled over without significant resistance.

Most crucial now are Presidential Directive #51, Executive Orders #13303, #13315, #13350, #13364, #13422, #13438, and more, by which Bush has granted himself an immense arsenal of powers for which the term “dictatorial” is a modest understatement.

The Founders established our government with checks and balances. But executive orders have accumulated important precedent. The Emancipation Proclamation by which Lincoln declared an end to slavery in the South, was issued under the “military necessity” of adding blacks to the Union Army, a step without which the North might not have won the Civil War. Franklin Roosevelt’s Executive Order #8802 established the Fair Employment Practices Commission. Harry Truman’s Executive Order #9981 desegregated the military.

Most to the point, FDR’s Executive Order #9066 ordered the forcible internment of 100,000 people of Japanese descent into the now infamous concentration camps of World War II.

There is also precedent for a president overriding the Supreme Court. In the 1830s Chief Justice John Marshall enshrined the right of the Cherokee Nation to sovereignty over its ancestral land in the Appalachian Mountains. But President Andrew Jackson scorned the decision. Some 14,000 native Americans were moved at gunpoint to Oklahoma. More than 3,000 died along the way.

All this will be relevant should Team Bush envision a defeat in the 2008 election and decide to call it off. It’s well established that Richard Nixonmentor to Karl Rove and Dick Cheneycommissioned the Huston Plan, which detailed how to cancel the 1972 election.

Today we must ask: who would stop this administration from taking dictatorial power in the instance of a “national emergency” such as a terror attack at a nuclear power plant or something similar?

Nothing in the behavior of this Congress indicates that it is capable of significant resistance. Impeachment seems beyond it. Nor does it seem Congress would actually remove Bush if it did put him on trial.

Short of that, Bush clearly does not view anything Congress might do as a meaningful impediment. After all, how many divisions does the Congress command?

The Supreme Court, as currently constituted, would almost certainly rubber stamp a Bush coup. If not, like Jackson, he could ignore it as easily as he would ignore Congress.

What does that leave? There is much idle speculation now about what the armed forces would do. We also hear loose talk about “90 million gun owners.”

From the public side, the only conceivable counter-force might be a national strike or an effective long-term campaign of general non-cooperation.

But we can certainly assume the mainstream media will give lock-step support to whatever the regime says and does. It’s also a given that those likely to lead the resistance will immediately land in those new prisons being built by Halliburton et. al.

So how do we cope with the harsh realities of such a Bush/Cheney/Rove dictatorial coup?

We may have about a year to prepare. Every possible scenario needs to be discussed in excruciating detail.

For only one thing is certain: denial will do nothing.

An E-mail Sent to Palestinian Representative at the U.N., Mr. Riyadh Mansour

Tony Sayegh, Palestinian Pundit

August 1, 2007

Dear Mr. Mansour,

Like countless other Palestinians I was shocked and outraged by the stand that your mission took in the Security Council. I am referring to your decision to work with the hostile U.S. Administration to block a resolution sponsored by Qatar and Indonesia calling for easing of the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and calling for the opening of the Rafah crossing to Egypt.

I am flabbergasted: you call yourselves Palestinian representatives and yet you are actively working with Israel and the U.S. to starve 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, through a total blockade? You call yourselves Palestinians and you, purposely, have been keeping over 6,000 sick and miserable Palestinians stranded in the Egyptian desert for almost two months, because you are demanding that the Rafah crossing remains closed? You are directly responsible for the death of 32 of these people, so far, and you call yourselves Palestinians?

Sir, besides treason, what you are doing is actively taking part in a war crime of collective punishment and genocide; do you realize that? One day the Palestinian people will have the right to try you and your superiors as war criminals just as the Germans tried and convicted Nazi war criminals.

I hope that day will come not in the distant future, so that criminals like you and your superiors starting with Mahmoud Abbas would get the punishment they deserve.

..: Translation of a Palestinian Torture Video :..

..: Translation of a Palestinian Torture Video :..

The Daily Life of Kawther Salam

August 1, 2007

The US financed the Palestinian Presidential Forces under control of Mahmoud Abbas with eighty million dollars. Not only that, but the war criminal of US General Keith Dayton also organize the training of these Palestinian troops. And beyond that, the European Union is financing the PA and paying part of the salaries of these troops.

The images in the following video, which was released to the Internet some time ago and whose translation I am presenting to the world, will show you the well-trained Fatah-PA troops. The way in which they torture their Palestinian prisoners shows the great achievements of the training given to these PA thugs by the USA. The Palestinian Authority forces seen in the video torturing the prisoners are from the death squads controlled by Mohammad Dahlan. The victims seen in the video are Palestinians, one of the prisoners wears a t-shirt with the legend of the ‘Executive Forces”, a Hamas unit under control of the Interior Ministry. The video is a direct consequence of the foreign policy of the USA and EU. It was subsidized with tax money from all these countries.

I am posting the translation of this Video from Gaza under the PA with deep sorrow and bitterness. I felt disgust while translating the horrible dialogues between the Palestinian jailers and their Palestinian victims, which shows the big danger to all Palestinians coming from the PA security system. The video shows some Palestinian prisoners caught by Muhammad Dahlan’s death squads. They are moaning of pain because of the torture inflicted on them, and all the while they are forced to recite denigrating chants for Muhammad Dahlan and Fatah. There is no different between these images of torture by Palestinian jailers and the images of torture by the American occupation for the Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The only difference is that the torture at Abu Ghraib was done by the American occupation, but in Gaza both jailers and prisoners were, and are, Palestinians.

I felt shame while translating this video, I even felt shame to be a Palestinian. My shame is not because of my Palestinian roots, but to be identified as a Palestinian and to know that there are monsters capable of such inhuman acts, like Muhammad Dahlan, like the jailers in the video and like the corrupted systems of the PA, who also call themselves Palestinians.

I translated the video because I am sure that most foreigners who see the video do not understand the whole story behind it, and I also found some mistakes in the attribution of this video on other websites. I also made this translation to ask the International Community, Governments, the UN General Council and Human Rights organizations to fulfill their duties and end the tragedy unfolding under the forces of the PA and establish an investigative body with the authority to trial and jail the Palestinian criminal Muhammad Dahlan and his troops. I also read that the US government is making pressure on President Abbas to give Dahlan power to control all the PA security systems, ignoring the will of the majority of Palestinians, who want him submitted to a revolutionary trial as a criminal and traitor.

I have always criticized the State of Israel, and I will criticize them until the occupation of my homeland Palestine ends, but I never imagined that I would criticize my own people for doing the horrible things which are done to everybody in Israeli jails. I never thought that I would see this kind of thing done by Palestinian jailers. It was not my wish to translate and to post this video, but I am obliged to do so after seeing the level of savagery and to which the conditions in my homeland have deteriorated.

The following videoclip shows scenes of real torture, and should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES be watched by minors or by sick or impressionable persons. Discretion is advised before you press on the PLAY button.

UPDATE: The original copy at YouTube was suppressed, the copy at LiveLeak was manipulated. Past attempts to suppress this video due to its damaging nature for the PA have been reported. In case it is removed by these services, I will make other copies available.

The first scene shows a pointed metal stick pushed into a prisoner’s spine, the prisoner is groaning of the pain, asking the jailer for mercy. Then we hear the jailer asking the prisoners “Who is your master ?” and all the prisoners answer together “Samih”. The full name of “Samih” is Samih Al Madhoun, head of Muhammad Dahlan’s death squads in Gaza. He kidnapped these prisoners and he is perhaps the person who is torturing the prisoners in this video. Samih Al Madhoun was killed on last June 14 ago when he was trying to escape from Gaza via the sea: he was chased down after he murdered somebody at the border on his way out.

The next scene shows how somebody with military boots steps on the chest and stomach of a prisoner and beats him with long lash, all the while and asking the prisoner “Who is your master ?” and ordering him to answers “Samih”. All the prisoners shout and moan of pain while repeating chants of victory for Samih, as demanded by the torturers. In these chants, the prisoners insult themselves and express their “admiration” and fear of Samih.

One of the prisoners wears a black shirt with the logo of the “Executive Forces”, what means that this prisoner was a Hamas member. This prisoner is tortured very seriously, the jailer all the time asks him: “Who is the dog, what’s written on your shirt? Who is the dog who gave you this shirt?” – the prisoner is forced to answer that the dog is Said Siyam (the former minister for interior and security from Hamas). After that, the jailer repeats the same question again and again with his jackboot on the prisoner chest, while the prisoner groans of pain and repeats the same answer to his jailer, again and again. The jailer beats the prisoner on his neck with the long lash. The prisoner cries and screams of pain while answering “Said Siyam is the dog”.

All the other prisoners in the same room scream together and repeat that “Samih” is the hero, “Samih, Samih … !”. In the scene, the jailer orders all to sing, all the while beating them. A prisoner sings: “Oh mother, the beautiful youth has departed from me and disappeared …” (Arabic: “Yamma Rahal Anni Zeen Al-Shabab we gab”).

Another prisoner screams while the jailer beats him. I hear him groaning and asking the jailer for the mercy of God and saying. “I didn’t say that, I swear in the name of my God that I didn’t say that”. All the while, the loud blows of the lash on the body of the prisoners can be heard.

In another scene the jailer in military uniform is seen stepping on the prisoner’s chest and asking him “Who is your Master ?”. The answer is “Samih”. Another question: “Who is the dog ?”. The answer is “Walid”, after which the jailer beats the prisoner and orders him to say that the full name of the “dog” is Walid Al-Shaqrah. The prisoner repeats, “Walid Al-Shaqrah !”. Another question by the jailer: “Who is the person you worked with and whose sister is a whore and fucks around ?” The prisoner answers: “Walid Al-Shaqrah !” (Walid Al-Shaqrah is one of the officers of the “Executive Forces” of Hamas).

The groans of pain of the prisoners become louder and louder while the jailers beat them and order them to sing for Fatah: “Fatah is the mother of the people (nation), keep your Fatah flag raised, the victory is for Fatah”. The prisoners repeat this loudly several times, “Fatah is the mother of the people (nation), keep your Fatah flag raised, the victory is for Fatah” (Arabic: “Fatah ya um al-jamaher, khalli raitek marfoa, mansorah ya fatah mansorah !”).

After that the jailers beat all the prisoners and order them to sing for Abu Fadhi (Muhammad Dahlan, who has a son called Fadhi): “Abu Fadhi is our Master, Abu Fadi is our darling, with our spirits and our blood, we will sacrifice for Dahlan !” (Arabic: “Abu Fadhi Sayyedna, Abu Fadi Habibna, bel-roh bel-dam nefdik ya Dahlan !”). This chant is repeated many times by the prisoners. After this, the jailer orders them to chant: “Abu Fadhi is the master of the creation, Abu Fadhi is the Master of the universe. Our God has placed Abu Fadhi over the whole Universe !” (Arabic: “Abu Fadhi sayed al-kon, Abu Fadhi hattoh rabna (Allah) fok al-kon !”). These chants are repeated several times under the blows from the jailers.

Muhammad Dahlan, Master of the Universe

After that, the jailer orders the prisoners to sing another song for Muhammad Dahlan: “Abu Fadhi is our darling, Abu Fadhi is our darling. Go and destroy Tel Aviv, go and destroy Tel Aviv !”. (Arabic: “Abu Fadhi ya habib, Abu Fadhi ya habib, roh damer Tel Abib, roh damer Tel Abib !”). This is also repeated several times under the blows from the jailers, who then order them to sing: “Walid Al-Shakrah is coward, and a mercenary for Iran !” (Arabic “Walid Al-Shakrah ya jaban, ya amel la Iran !”). This song is also repeated by the prisoners. Then the jailer orders them to repeatedly sing “Hamas Shia, Hamas Shia … Walid coward … ” (Hamas is Sunni, as are most Palestinians). During all of this the prisoners are cuffed kneeling on the floor, their eyes are covered, and they are continuously being beaten by the jailers.

I have never seen this kind of torture, but I often heard that something like what is seen in this video happens all in the Israeli jails. Only once I saw something similar: The Israeli Border Police detained over 24 Palestinian and they were all ordered to sing a childish song: “Hoto Al-Humos Ala El Fol, ana Baheb Le-Shmark Fol“, after what the Border Police forced these Palestinian detainees to drink their urine (Hebrew). Some of these youths vomited, one of them was transferred to the hospital after this incident.

The revenge of Hamas for atrocities like those seen in the video were horrible as well. People from Fatah were lynched, thrown from buildings, some people were followed into hospitals and shot, and the people who were waiting at the Erez checkpoint and finally brought to Egypt last week by the Israelis were family of torturers and death squads members from the Fatah, who could only expect to be killed in Gaza and the West Bank because of the crimes of their relatives.

On behalf of Palestinians I want say that we do not want to see Muhammad Dahlan in any post of government with President Abbas. This kind of treatment was what caused the anger to explode in Gaza and Hamas to win the elections by such a wide margin. The persons responsible for these atrocities must be punished, as they brought disaster to Gaza. We urgently ask that Dahlan be tried and punished for his criminal behavior. We ask the International Community to force the PA to punish Muhammad Dahlan and others for crimes against humanity, together with the Israeli Army officers who implement the occupation. I hope that this clip will help my readers, most of whom are from the USA and Europe, to understand the true nature of the foreign policy which your governments pursue.

The European Union must stop their direct support for the Palestinian security forces, copying the disgusting behavior of the Americans will ultimately be against the best interest of all Europeans. They must stop their support for the death squads within the Palestinian security systems until they change their behavior. It is a shame that the European Union keeps supporting the violation of prisoner rights and outright torture under the PA authority by way of financing and building up a corrupt military system. Instead of these thugs, the support must go to the starved people in Palestine.

The video which I translate and comment here is just one piece in a growing collection of material evidence and documents which have been found in buildings abandoned by the Fatah in Gaza. As horrible as it is, it may be considered one of the “softer” torture videos found. And there are many other interesting things found by Hamas during the last days. In a press conference given in Gaza on Friday 22 by the Hamas press speaker, Khalil El-Hayyeh, details of the spying activities of the Fatah in behalf of Israel and the USA were made public. Hamas found sophisticated American spying equipment, and recordings on memory devices (“chips”) show that the “Alternative Security” and the Intelligence system of the PA were spying not only on persons in Palestine with political views different from theirs, but that they were also spying on President Abbas and former President Arafat and their staffs, on religious, military and political leaders of other Arab countries as well. Also, lists with names of people and orders to kill them or pass their personal details to Israel so the Israelis could kill them were found. Also, documents were found which show that well-known and politically independent persons were involved in “immoral activities” (possibly sexual entrapment) by the PA in order to damage their reputations and their viability as prospective leaders.

In the small town of Beit Lahia on the northern parts of Gaza Strip, two Palestinians were killed and many are injured, by invading Israeli state terrorist forces on Wednesday morning. Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip maintain in full force with no decrease.Sources report that approx thirty Israeli military vehicles penetrated the Sheimaa area of the northern Beit Lahiya under intense fire at local residents and their homes. The savage Israelis have prohibited medical rescue teams from reaching the dead, and the wounded are left on the ground to die.The Israeli state terrorists trespassed Palestinian property and abducted several local citizens and transferred them to undisclosed locations.

Meanwhile on Wednesday when this planned and targeted killings of Palestinian fighters continues , the Israeli state terrorists conducted other crimes. The vast areas of Palestinian farmland, in the region close to the former Israeli settlement of Dogit was bulldozed. I received the reports of the new massacre some hour after the invasion – until now the phones in the area have no connection, which often means a sign of an ill omen. In the clashes with the invading Israeli death squads in the Da’our area, sources from the Al Qassam Brigades and PLC is reporting that the heroic Palestinian resistance have killed or wounded, some of the Israeli invaders.

By the end of July, 34 Palestinians are reported killed by the occupant Israel ( the state of sponsored terrorism). The Israelis continue their terrorist-activities – in particular the destruction and assassination campaigns are focused on the resistance movement, based onthe Hamas governed Gaza Strip. The Israeli violations also continues in the Judaization of Jerusalem, in an attempt to expel Palestinians from the city, and Palestinian landowners from their property’s in the city’s nearby neighbourhoods.

Daily reports from the West Bank, reveal violent attacks from Israeli settlers – who continues to attack the Palestinians and their farms land property. – These illegal attacks – a part of the Jewish /Zionists tactics and the factual outcome of the Israelis decisive expropriation strategy, is being conspicuously ignored by the UN and its member states, all though the crimes are exposed openly.

By erecting illegal barriers and checkpoints in the West Bank and allowing criminal settler gangs to attack the Palestinians – the Jewish/ Zionists have been able to deprive possessions of the Palestinian people. In the “spirit” and the violent path of their ancestors, the Jewish occupation “pioneers” – all members, active and armed or “passive” supporters, of the Stern – Gang and other criminal Jewish/Zionist groups – the new ” Israeli pioneers”continues the confiscation and the thievery of the Palestinian peoples land and possessions – aiming to erect a “Greater Israel” on Arab land.

Half of Iraq ‘in absolute poverty’ : Thank’s to The US ‘Brutal and Uncivilized’ Invasion

Half of Iraq ‘in absolute poverty’ : Thank’s to The US ‘Brutal and Uncivilized’ Invasion

[]

Iraqi children are most at risk from the mounting crisis, the joint report says [EPA]

Up to eight million Iraqis require immediate emergency aid, with nearly half of the population living in “absolute poverty”, according to a report by Oxfam and a coalition of Iraqi groups.

About four million people are lacking food and “in dire need of different types of humanitarian assistance”, said the report, released in Amman on Monday.

“Iraqis are suffering from a growing lack of food, shelter, water and sanitation, health care, education, and employment,” said the report, compiled by Oxfam and the NGO Co-ordination Committee in Iraq (NCCI).

The report also says two million people within the country are currently displced, while more than two million are refugees.

Most of those refugees have fled to Jordan and Syria.

‘Grim picture’

“Many of the figures and percentages in the report were actually derived from UN sources… so we concur with the findings”, Said Arikit, spokesman for the UN mission in Iraq

Said Arikit, a spokesman for the UN mission in Iraq, told Al Jazeera the report painted a “grim picture”.

“Many of the figures and percentages in the report were actually derived from UN sources… so we concur with the findings,” he said.

“The government of Iraq is definitely the authority in Iraq and it bears responsibility for the welfare of its people.”

Iraqi services have been left in crisis as most of those seeking refuge are professionals, according to the report.

“The ‘brain drain’ that Iraq is experiencing is further stretching already inadequate public services, as thousands of medical staff, teachers, water engineers, and other professionals are forced to leave the country,” it said.

The entry of Iraqi refugees to neighbouring countries has placed a growing strain on health, education and social services in the two countries.

Ration crisis

Only 60 per cent of the four million people who depend on food assistance have access to rations from the government-run public distribution system, down from 96 per cent in 2004, the report said.

The number of Iraqis without access to adequate water supplies has risen from 50 per cent to 70 per cent since 2003.

The lack of effective sanitation was also highlighted by the joint report, which said 80 per cent of people in Iraq did not have safe access.

The report said children were the hardest hit by the fall in living standards, stating child malnutrition rates have risen from 19 per cent before the US-led invasion in 2003 to 28 percent currently.

“Despite the constraints imposed by the government of Iraq, the UN and the international donors can do more to deliver humanitarian assistance to reduce unnecessary suffering,” the report said.

One recommendation called for the government of Nuri al-Maliki, Iraq’s prime minister, to decentralise the distribution of aid to local authorities, and make it easier for civil society organisations to operate.

Deaths fall

Meanwhile in Iraq, officials from the US military say they have seen a drop in US troop deaths in July.

In April, the number of US soldiers who died was 104, increased sharply in May when 126 servicemen died, and decreased slightly with 101 troops dead in June.

For the month of July, at least 69 US soldiers have died, about half the casualties in May.

Iraq’s police say the number of civilian deaths also decreased by 36 per cent, from an estimated high of 1,900 in May to 1,342 in June.

General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, said: “The sheikhs and the tribes and the leaders have banded together and made a decision to oppose al-Qaeda and that has resulted in a substantially improved security situation.”

Despite what appears to be at least a temporary let-up in both military and civilian deaths, many say there will be no security without a stable Iraqi government.

US WarCrime : Kirkuk-Haifa Pipeline Article Was Written in 2003

US WarCrime : Kirkuk-Haifa Pipeline Article Was Written in 2003

Bernhard, Moon of Alabama

August 1, 2007

Juan Cole today highlighted a Haaretz story about a revival of the dormant Kirkuk-Haifa pipeline:

Some in the Pentagon and in Israel have not given up on the hope of a Kirkuk-Haifa pipeline to bring Iraqi petroleum to Israel. Oh, yeah, like that is going to happen. First of all, the Iraqi government’s position is that it is bound by Arab League strictures on trade with Israel. Second, Sunni Arab guerrillas would fill such a pipeline full of holes every hour of every day. Third, it almost certainly would not make economic sense even if it were possible politically. Talk about a pipe dream -). You just worry that this crackpot idea was one of the motives for the Neoconservatives for the Iraq War. What a waste.

An hour ago a Technorati search for pipeline haifa kirkuk came up with 43 blogs. Those I checked were induced by the Cole multiplier post above. People obviously invested brain and bytes to discuss this recent and relevant development.

Folks, you have been had, just like the good Professor Cole.

The story you point to was published on August 25 2003!

To your credit it wasn’t your fault!

Using the link Cole provides, the only date shown on the page is on the top and it is today’s date, August 1, 2007.

The URL that is underlying Cole’s link is:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=332835&contrassID=2
&subContrassID=1&sbSubContrassID=0&listScr=Y
Using that link there is only the top date visual on the page at the Haaretz site, August 1, 2007.

But when you click this:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=332835&contrassID=2
&subContrassID=1&sbSubContrassID=0&listScr=Y
you will see word-by-word the same article, with the same title, by the same author, with the same date on the top of the page, but with one slight difference.

Above the headline at the second link the Haaretz site says:

Last update – 02:51 25/08/2003

Oooppps. The story without the “Last update” Cole linked to is definitely the same 2003 story.

Proof that the story is old:

The National Infrastructure Minister Yosef Paritzky, mentioned in the article was dismissed in July 2004. The story under the August 1 2007 date can not be current. Also proof, the good folks at Common Dreams archived it under a 2003 URL when it was published.

How did this happen?

Check again on the URLs I show above. The difference between those two are the highlighted “amp;” sequences.

The language that codes the usual HTML pages you see in your web-browser, uses special ‘tags’ for special characters. The tag for the copyright sign © is ©. The tag for the ampersand sign & is &. Your web-browser converts such tags into the readable letter.

This is a problem with some half assed commenting software, like Haloscan, used by several well traveled blogs that mixes these up when you copy and paste such special tags within them.

Test:

Find a blogging site that uses Haloscan comments like Eschaton. Then:

  • Copy the second link above (with the & tags, both lines)
  • Make a comment at the Haloscan site by clicking on ‘comments’ (at Eschaton or elsewhere – not here as we use a different system with other bugs)
  • Paste the link into a new comment at the end of the Haloscan window, check for the & and publish it.
  • Go back to that comment, look at it, click on it and check your browser URL line.
  • Now copy that browser URL line into your blog post and you are screwed.

Doing the above the & tags have been converted to simple & characters. For Haaretz links the unwanted conversion done by the Haloscan comment system results into faulty links that do no longer display the publishing date of an article.

Nothing bad or manipulative intended happened here – Cole didn’t screw up – he just discovered a bug ….

Maybe the person who sent Cole that link or maybe he himself copied it in a program where the ‘&’ was converted into ‘&’ even though that wasn’t in any way intended. (Haloscan isn’t the only buggy software). The result of such a hiccup in this case is a different webpage where the crucial publishing/update date is not shown and only today’s date is shown. (Haaretz’ webmasters should definitly fix that crude behavior on their site too.)

All that said, the lesson here is to stay alert and not to believe what this or that piece on the web says without some plausible confirmation. You may speculate about such, but do not believe them.

Stay leery folks!

THE TRUTH IS OUT~~ IRAQ INVASION WAS ABOUT OIL

[]

All along we have been saying that the only reason for the American invasion of Iraq was to get their oil. It had nothing to do with Saddam, nothing to do with Bin Laden, nothing to do with security.

The truth is finally getting out…. hopefully it will be a wakeup call for the American people.

Read the following report from today’s HaAretz…. And thank you Cindy Sheehan for never giving up.

U.S. checking possibility of pumping oil from northern Iraq to Haifa, via Jordan By Amiram Cohen

The United States has asked Israel to check the possibility of pumping oil from Iraq to the oil refineries in Haifa. The request came in a telegram last week from a senior Pentagon official to a top Foreign Ministry official in Jerusalem.

The Prime Minister’s Office, which views the pipeline to Haifa as a “bonus” the U.S. could give to Israel in return for its unequivocal support for the American-led campaign in Iraq, had asked the Americans for the official telegram.

The new pipeline would take oil from the Kirkuk area, where some 40 percent of Iraqi oil is produced, and transport it via Mosul, and then across Jordan to Israel. The U.S. telegram included a request for a cost estimate for repairing the Mosul-Haifa pipeline that was in use prior to 1948. During the War of Independence, the Iraqis stopped the flow of oil to Haifa and the pipeline fell into disrepair over the years.

The National Infrastructure Ministry has recently conducted research indicating that construction of a 42-inch diameter pipeline between Kirkuk and Haifa would cost about $400,000 per kilometer. The old Mosul-Haifa pipeline was only 8 inches in diameter.

National Infrastructure Minister Yosef Paritzky said yesterday that the port of Haifa is an attractive destination for Iraqi oil and that he plans to discuss this matter with the U.S. secretary of energy during his planned visit to Washington next month. Paritzky added that the plan depends on Jordan’s consent and that Jordan would receive a transit fee for allowing the oil to piped through its territory. The minister noted, however, that “due to pan-Arab concerns, it will be hard for the Jordanians to agree to the flow of Iraqi oil via Jordan and Israel.”

Sources in Jerusalem confirmed yesterday that the Americans are looking into the possibility of laying a new pipeline via Jordan and Israel. (There is also a pipeline running via Syria that has not been used in some three decades.)

Iraqi oil is now being transported via Turkey to a small Mediterranean port near the Syrian border. The transit fee collected by Turkey is an important source of revenue for the country. This line has been damaged by sabotage twice in recent weeks and is presently out of service.

In response to rumors about the possible Kirkuk-Mosul-Haifa pipeline, Turkey has warned Israel that it would regard this development as a serious blow to Turkish-Israeli relations.

Sources in Jerusalem suggest that the American hints about the alternative pipeline are part of an attempt to apply pressure on Turkey.

Iraq is one of the world’s largest oil producers, with the potential of reaching about 2.5 million barrels a day. Oil exports were halted after the Gulf War in 1991 and then were allowed again on a limited basis (1.5 million barrels per day) to finance the import of food and medicines. Iraq is currently exporting several hundred thousand barrels of oil per day.

During his visit to Washington in about two weeks, Paritzky also plans to discuss the possibility of U.S. and international assistance for joint Israeli-Palestinian projects in the areas of energy and infrastructure, natural gas, desalination and electricity.

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 1 August 2007

Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice

Wednesday, 1 August 2007.

  • Three mysterious car bombs kill or wound upwards of 200 people Wednesday.
  • Bomb rips through US Humvee in southeastern Baghdad Wednesday morning.
  • US admits three more American troops killed and six others wounded in Resistance attack in Baghdad Tuesday.
  • US locks down Samarra’, launches campaign of house raids and searches following Resistance downing of US helicopter gun ship.
  • Danish Minister of Defense dives for cover Tuesday as Danish base he was visiting near al-Basrah comes under bombardment.
  • British patrol comes under attack in al-Basrah at dawn Wednesday.

Baghdad.

Three mysterious car bombs kill or wound upwards of 200 people Wednesday.

In a dispatch posted at 4:25pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that an explosives-laden tank truck and two car bombs exploded in various parts of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing or wounding at least 200 people.

The AMSI reported a source in the puppet police as saying that a man driving an explosives-laden fuel tanker slammed into a fuel station in the western Baghdad neighborhood of al-Mansur on Wednesday afternoon. The blast killed 50 people and wounded 60 more, by preliminary count.

Earlier, on Wednesday morning, the puppet police source said, a car bomb exploded near al-Hurriyah Square in central Baghdad’s al-Karradah district, killing and wounding 80 more. The sources said that in addition to the casualties, nearby shops and private cars were also damaged.

Yet another car bomb exploded in the southern Baghdad suburb of ad-Durah, killing eight people, by preliminary count.

Bomb rips through US Humvee in southeastern Baghdad Wednesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 1:57pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that a bomb exploded by a US patrol in Baghdad al-Jadidah, a district in the southeast of the occupied Iraqi capital, on Wednesday morning.

The AMSI reported a source in the puppet police as saying that the blast disabled an American Humvee. US soldiers quickly sealed off the area to prevent information on the nature and extent of American casualties from leaking out, as it is US policy to hide information on American losses in Iraq.

US admits death of three more American troops in Baghdad on Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 1:57pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that the US military had admitted the deaths of three more of its troops and the wounding of six other American soldiers on the last day of July.

The AMSI reported the American communiqué as saying that the soldiers were deployed in Baghdad and that an Iraqi Resistance armor-piercing explosive went off near their vehicle in eastern Baghdad on Tuesday.

Salah ad-Din Province.
Samarra’.

US locks down Samarra’, launches campaign of house raids and searches following Resistance downing of US helicopter gun ship.

In a dispatch posted on its website Wednesday, Quds Press reported that US occupation forces in control of the city of Samarra’, 120km north of Baghdad imposed a curfew on the city beginning Tuesday night and lasting until further notice.

A source in the puppet security forces told Quds Press that the Americans used loudspeakers to tell local residents of the imposition of the curfew and that during the time it is in force, US troops will be cruising the city, storming into residents’ houses to raid and search.

The order to lock down the city and harass the inhabitants followed the shooting down of an American helicopter near Samara’ as it was taking off from the US-occupied airbase in nearby Balad and after the shooting down of an unmanned American spy plane.

Al-Basrah Province.
Al-Basrah.

British patrol comes under attack in al-Basrah at dawn Wednesday.

In a dispatch posted at 2:15pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that armed men attacked a British patrol in the southern city of al-Basrah at dawn on Wednesday.

The AMSI reported the spokesman for the British occupation forces as saying that men armed with light and medium weapons attacked the British patrol in the al-Barradi‘iyah area of the city on the road to the Presidential Palaces, which the British have taken over and turned into one of their local headquarters.

As usual, the British spokesman claimed that the attack inflicted no damage or casualties. Nevertheless, the British forces have reduced their movements around al-Basrah because of the relentless attacks to which their troops are subjected whenever they venture out of their hideouts.

Danish Minister of Defense dives for cover Tuesday as Danish base he was visiting near al-Basrah comes under bombardment.

In a dispatch posted at 10:31am Baghdad time Wednesday morning, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that the Danish occupation forces’ base came under an intense rocket barrage when the Danish Minister of Defense was there delivering a speech at a formal celebration marking the conclusion of the Danish occupation forces’ mission.

The AMSI reported that the Danish Defense Minister had to fling himself to the ground in search of cover from the incoming fire. News media claimed stated that the Danish Minister was not hurt in the attack.

It was expected that the last 50 Danish troops would set off for Kuwait on Tuesday to catch the last troop transport flight to Denmark.
