JERUSALEM – Tears welling in his eyes, an elderly Holocaust survivor on Thursday embraced the son of the Albanian man who saved him from the Nazi death camps, highlighting the little-known role played by European Muslims in helping Jews during World War II.

The two met for the first time at a photography exhibition at Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, honoring Albanians who sheltered Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Albania, a tiny European country with a Muslim majority, sheltered about 1,000 Jews who, except for one family, survived Nazi occupation, according to officials.

“This is a very unique story,” said Yehudit Shendar, the exhibition’s curator. Though Islam has an anti-Jewish image, these were “Muslims who endangered their own lives to save Jews,” she said. Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II.

Albanians sheltered between 600 and 1,800 Jewish refugees, risking death or imprisonment, officials said. At the end of the war, Albania was the only European country with a larger Jewish population than before the war.

Taliban overrun another Afghan district

TALIBAN fighters have overrun a second district in western Afghanistan, a district governor said today, warning the rebels could be planning to sweep into his area.

The police and administration heads of the strategic Bakwa district in Farah province had fled after days of attacks by scores of rebels, the official said, after the militants took the adjacent Gulistan district late on Monday.

Taliban insurgents have previously overrun several districts in remote parts of Afghanistan, including Bakwa, but have been easily ejected by the international militaries here to aid the country’s weak security forces.

They have, however, held the district of Musa Qala, close to Gulistan, since February and the area is considered a Taliban base.

Bakwa police had made a “tactical withdrawal” to Delaram district after a new Taliban attack late yesterday, said Delaram governor Yahya Riadth.

“Taliban have control over Bakwa district now and the police and district governor have retreated to our district,” he said.

In other attacks linked to the insurgency, a remotely detonated bomb blew up a police vehicle near the border with Pakistan, killing three policemen and wounding three more, Kunar province police chief Abdul Jalal Jalal said.

Elsewhere in the same mountainous province, Taliban militants attacked a police post overnight, killing a policeman and wounding another, Mr Jalal said.

Meeting Resistance, portrays a side of the Iraqi insurgency President Bush doesn’t want the world to see.

11/02/07 “ICH — – On one of those beautiful, fall Sunday mornings that can make you feel all is right with the world, filmmakers Molly Bingham and Steve Connors discussed their new documentary about Iraqis fighting the U.S. occupation, “Meeting Resistance” 84 minutes of unflinching wallop destined to unhinge the way millions of Americans see their country’s role in the world.

Before returning to the U.S. the next month, Bingham watched news reports, trying unsuccessfully to find out who was beginning to violently oppose the U.S. occupation and why. She talked with a photographer-colleague, Steve Connors, a former British Army MP, who had observed the same lack of coverage.

Between them they had 33 years experience covering conflict zones and decided to collaborate on reporting what till now has been the most visibly under-reported story of the Iraq war. By August they were back in Iraq for another 10 months, Connors to film and Bingham to write.

“This film is seen as somehow really radical,” the 48 year-old Connors said. “I’ve covered 10 conflicts and this is the first time I’ve heard it’s radical to cover the other side. As a German friend of mine asked, ‘Americans consider this news?’”

One example of how much difference perspective makes, Connors said, can be as simple as the usage of the term “Sunni triangle.”

“I never heard that term from an Iraqi. There are many Sunnis living there, but that area is majority Shia, so Iraqis would never call it that. It’s another example of how all our news comes from the lens of the military.”

One audience the film was made available to was a roomful of active duty soldiers, officers and enlisted, in Baghdad earlier this month. ABC News was there and asked two young soldiers who patrol Baghdad nearly every day with the Third Infantry Division, what they thought after seeing the documentary.

Sgt. Mike Kelley told ABC, “When you try to be compassionate and see things from their point of view, this is sort of reinforcing that, saying yeah, this really is how they feel. They’re normal people and they’re pissed off because we’re here and we’re not welcome.”

Added Specialist Travis Barnes, “We just don’t know all the rich details that make these people up and tell us who they are and why they behave the way they behave, and their history. It’s stuff we need to know.”

One thing that surprised the filmmakers as they were in the midst of their project was how quickly a decentralized resistance developed against the occupation.

Bingham recalled that, “We didn’t know what to expect at all, but what we found was that the vast majority of people we spoke with didn’t wait to see how the administration of Baghdad was going to go. They just saw they were being occupied and that occupation required a response. Most of the people we interviewed were organizing within a week (of the fall of the Saddam Hussein government in early April, 2003), finding people to work with.”

“None of these people required leadership,” Connors submitted. “No one told them what to do; they did it as an act of personal conscience. And if you follow that line of thought you can see that a leader in that situation is simply someone who has a few more skills than you do. If, after a while, he veers off from opposing the occupation he might get killed, or in some fashion you settle with him and get another leader. In a strange way, it’s almost democratic.”

One factor that may explain the relative quickness of the Sunni resistance, Bingham surmised, was that “Sunnis have more of what we would call a ‘Protestant’ view of their religion. They knew they were right because of their individual interpretation of the Koran; whereas the Shia have a more Catholic relationship with God, with a worldly spiritual leader who interprets the Koran for them.”

Bingham concluded by looking beyond the particular message of “Meeting Resistance.” “This film is clearly about Iraq; it is clearly shaped by the culture, religion and history of Iraq. But it is also a film about the human condition under occupation as seen through this history…we shouldn’t be surprised.”

Only one in every 400 stop and searches carried out under sweeping anti-terrorism laws leads to an arrest, official figures released yesterday reveal, triggering fresh pressure on the government and police over the controversial tactic.

Official government figures covering 2005/6, the first since the July 7 2005 bombings on London, show a big increase in the use of the power, with Asian people bearing the brunt. One force, City of London, carried out 6,846 stops of pedestrians and vehicles without finding enough evidence to justify a single arrest.

In the 44,543 stops in England and Wales, there were 105 arrests. Out of every 400 people stopped 399 were let go straight away.

The number of racist incidents recorded by police rose 4%, to 60,407, though the government says this is only a fraction of those that occurred. Racially or religiously aggravated offences rose by 12% to 41,382.

“It also shows the massive disproportionality which exists for black and Asian people being searched. The disproportionality will continue to shake the trust and confidence of black and Asian communities at a time where the police needs them on board.”

“The key to effective and fair use of stop and search is that it should be used in a targeted, intelligence-led way, with good grounds and based on accurate, up-to-date intelligence.

“Our aim is to ensure that officers have the confidence to use the powers effectively to tackle crime, whilst promoting confidence in their use amongst all members of the community.”

9/11 Crime : No, The Collapse of the Twin Towers Did NOT Create the Molten Metal

When confronted with evidence that temperatures at the World Trade Centers were too high to have been caused by anything other than explosives, defenders of the government story argue that such temperatures were caused by “friction” or “pressure” from the gigantic buildings collapsing in on themselves.

In other words, they argue that tremendous gravitational energy was released by the collapse of the Twin Towers as parts of the buildings crashed into other parts — which in turn generated sufficient heat to melt and even partially evaporate the Towers’ strong structural steel, and to keep the metal at ground zero in a molten state for months after 9/11.

However, a professor emeritus of physics has proven that the collapses themselves could not have melted steel.

And Brent Blanchard told Dr. Steven Jones by telephone that he has witnessed hundreds of controlled demolitions, but has never seen molten metal at any of the demolition sites. (Blanchard is a recognized expert in controlled demolition).

And remember, not only was molten metal found under the mammoth Twin Towers — which were 110-stories high — but molten metal and partially evaporated metal were also found in the debris of World Trade Center building 7. Building 7 — which collapsed later in the day on 9/11 — was only 47 stories tall, and was substantially less massive than the Twin Towers. How could a falling 47-story building have caused molten and evaporated metal?

And yet, somehow, WTC7 apparently experienced equally high temperatures as the Twin Towers after collapse.

Specifically, here’s a chart showing that WTC7 was as hot as WTC 1 and 2:

The following thermal images of ground zero (the first one showing an overlay of the demolished buildings), show that the debris under building 7 (the trapezoid-shaped building at the upper right) was about as hot as under the Twin Towers:

If not, why were the temperatures at WTC7 as high as at the Twin Towers five days after the collapses?

A YOUNG North Wales thug who yanked off a Muslim woman’s veil was today spared jail after he made a public apology in court.

Damien French, 21, said sorry for humiliating the woman and also apologised for hurling a live rabbit to an alligator in the Colwyn Bay Welsh Mountain Zoo.

French, of Brighton Road in Rhyl, admitted charges of racially aggravated common assault and a racially aggravated public order offence when he appeared before Mold Crown Court this morning.

The judge, Mr Recorder Robert Trevor-Jones, said that French’s behaviour in grabbing the hijab had been “deplorable, despicable and quite disgraceful”.

Mold Crown Court heard how victim Shahenna Hussain, 23, was walking with her sister and two nieces, pushing push chairs along the street at the junction of High Street and Wellington Road one afternoon in April.

French was seen by a witness in a nearby shop to be initially hurling foul racial abuse at a coach which appeared full of Asian passengers.

Miss Hussain saw the defendant and his group, realised what was happening, put her head down to avoid eye contact and continued on her way.

The defendant and his group noticed her and her sister as she crossed the road and he shouted and swore in racial terms towards her.

Prosecutor Gareth Parry said: “She suddenly felt a violent grip to the top of her head, connecting with her hijab, which was fixed with two pins. But pins were forced open.”

She was “extremely upset and angry” and felt violated, explained Mr Parry.

New version of Gospels changes gender of ‘Son of God’ to female

A publisher is touting a new edition of the Gospels that identifies Christ as a woman named Judith Christ of Nazareth.

LBI Institute says its version, Judith Christ of Nazareth, The Gospels of the Bible, Corrected to Reflect that Christ Was a Woman, Extracted from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, takes Thomas Jefferson’s edited Gospel one step futher by “correcting” the gender of Christ and God.

The new version, according to the publisher, revises familiar stories, tranforming the “Prodigal Son” into the “Prodigal Daughter” and the “Lord’s Prayer” into the “Lady’s Prayer.”

A passage compiled from Luke 2, with corresponding verses at the beginning of each sentence, says: “4 And Joseph went to Bethlehem. 5 To be enrolled with Mary, his wife, who was then pregnant. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn child. 21 And her name was chosen to be Judith.”

A passage on the crucifixion, from John 19, says: “17 And She bearing her cross went forth. 18 There they crucified Judith.”

A resurrection passage from Matthew 28 states: “1 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Judith who was crucified.” 6 “She is not here; for She is risen.”

The book’s foreword says, “The Jefferson Bible is faithfully followed by the present book, with the corrections in the name and gender of Christ, the gender of God, and some of the parables.”

The publisher explains Jefferson used extracts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John rather than the complete books, in order to tell a “linear, complete, organized story” that emphasizes the moral teachings of Christ.

The foreword says, “Events in the Gospel that do not relate to the moral teachings of Christ are often omitted. However, the basic narrative of Christ’s life, death and resurrection is maintained.”
