Children pay the high price of Iraq violence: UNICEF

December 21, 2007

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AFP) — The lives of millions of Iraqi children are still blighted by violence, poor nutrition and disrupted education more than four years after the US-led invasion, UNICEF said on Friday.

The United Nations Children’s Fund said in a report that few teenagers took their final exams last summer, safe drinking water remained scarce and about 1,350 children were detained by the authorities in 2007.

It also said that on average 25,000 children and their families were forced out of their homes each month to seek shelter in other parts of the country.

UNICEF said that the current reduction in violence provided a chance to help Iraqi children, gain access to those in detention, and strengthen government structures focused on young people.

“Iraqi children are paying far too high a price,” said Roger Wright, UNICEF’s special representative for Iraq, in the report.

“A new window of opportunity is opening, which should enable us to reach the most vulnerable with expanded, consistent support.”

UNICEF said its research showed that only 28 percent of 17-year-olds sat their school leaving exams this year, and that in south and central Iraq just 40 percent achieved a pass grade.

The number of primary school age children not in education in 2006 was 760,000, but this figure has grown over the past year as more displaced children had their schooling disrupted, the report added.

At the end of 2007 about 75,000 Iraqi children lived in camps or temporary shelters — a quarter of them forced out of their homes since the bombing in February 2006 of a Shiite shrine at the central town of Samarra triggered savage sectarian violence.

The report said that in 2007 “hundreds of children lost their lives or were injured by violence and many more had their main family wage-earner kidnapped or killed.”

Despite the suffering, there were some positive signs for Iraq’s children, said UNICEF, which invested more than 40 million dollars in the country during the year.

It said its funds enabled Iraqi health workers to conduct house-to-house immunisation of more than four million children against polio and more than three million children against measles, mumps and rubella.

As a result of such work, UNICEF said, Iraq remained polio-free while measles cases have fallen sharply from 9,181 in 2004 to 156 by November 2007.

About 4.7 million primary school children benefited from new school materials and new and restored classrooms paid for by UNICEF, the report said.

UNICEF said that the recent improvement in security in Iraq would reveal children’s needs more clearly, and added that children from previously displaced families who chose to return to their homes were particularly at risk.

“Iraqi children are the foundation for their country’s recovery,” Wright said. “Where children’s lives are protected and revived, community recovery will swiftly follow.”

Iraq, Afghanistan War Costs Top Vietnam

Iraq, Afghanistan War Costs Top Vietnam

Aaron Glantz

December 21, 2007

Congress’ approval Wednesday of $70 billion more for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan mean the twin conflicts are now more costly to American taxpayers than the war in Vietnam.

According to a study by the Washington-based Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, Congress has now approved nearly $700 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Using inflation-adjusted dollars, the total cost of those wars has now surpassed the total cost of the Vietnam war (which ran to $670 billion),” the group’s Travis Sharp told OneWorld. “It’s also more than seven times larger than the Persian Gulf War ($94 billion) and more than twice the cost of the Korean war ($295 billion).”

As a result of Wednesday’s vote, Sharp said, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will become the second costliest conflict in American history, trailing only World War II.

“But that was a time when 12 million Americans served, as compared with 1.42 million active duty soldiers and just over one million National Guard and reservists today,” Sharp added.

Much of the money approved by Congress will go to buy expensive new military equipment: $922 million is earmarked for purchase or alteration of 41 new Blackhawk, Apache, and Chinook Helicopters; $813 million will be spent on new Bradley Fighting Vehicles; $455 million for new Humvees; $427 million on new Heavy Tactical Vehicles; and $425 million for M1 Abrams Tanks.

“I think what you’re seeing from Democrats is a resignation to the fact that they’re going to have to wait for the Bush Administration to leave office before they see any serious change in the country’s war policy,” Sharp said. “The Democrats just want to play out the clock on this one.”

But “playing out the clock” comes with a severe cost for essential services at home.

Even before the new $70 billion dollars was approved Wednesday, the Massachusetts-based National Priorities Project had estimated that the average American household has already spent $4,100 on the Iraq war.

This year alone, US taxpayers spent $137.6 billion on the Iraq war. For the same amount of money, the government could have provided more than 39 million people with health care, built one million units of affordable housing, or outfitted 142 million homes with renewable electricity sources.

“We want to help people comprehend the magnitude of these numbers,” said the group’s Pamela Schwartz. “Surely, ultimately, we’d hope that our priorities would shift so that significantly less money is going to war with more money going to programs like heath care, Headstart, and education.”

“We want to help people understand that choices are being made here,” she added.

To that end, the National Priorities Project has set up a web-site, Costofwar.com, where taxpayers can learn what the cost of the Iraq war has meant to their community. Visitors to the website can search by state, city, or congressional district and find out how much money the Iraq war has taken out of their community and where the money could have gone instead.

For example, taxpayers in Chicago have spent $4.8 billion on the war in Iraq – money that could have been used to build 567 new elementary schools or build 35,000 units of affordable housing.

In smaller places like George W. Bush’s hometown of Crawford, Texas, war spending has also had a strong impact. Crawford’s taxpayers have spent $1.3 million on the war in Iraq – money that could have been used to provide 180 full scholarships for university students, or hire 30 additional police and sheriff’s deputies.

“The Democrats were elected last year with a certain set of priorities, but President Bush drew a line in the sand,” Schwartz told OneWorld. “Rather than drawing their own line, Democrats respected Bush’s line. They met President Bush’s spending limits on domestic programs and gave him a blank check for the Iraq war. That’s the choice they made.”

BOWING DOWN TO THE DEVIL

BOWING DOWN TO THE DEVIL

That’s what it looks like if you see a group of devout Muslims at prayer bowing down with Israeli soldiers standing in front of them.

To one unacquainted with the horrors of occupation or apartheid it’s a very strange sight indeed as it can be very confusing. The following explains what the thoughts of these worshipers are in a situation like that…..

The soldiers don’t exist

By Amira Hass

At first glance it looks like people bowing down to other people. Maybe an ancient rite of worship before the weapons that hang nonchalantly from their erect bearers, who smile slightly, perhaps a plea for favor from the master. How easy it is from this photograph to infer a relationship of domination, when it is clear who is who on each side. How easy it is to conclude that the dominated side accepts the domination, the hierarchy, as part of Creation. Pierre Bourdieu writes in “Masculine Domination” that the ruled impose on the relationship of domination categories that have been formulated from the point of view of the rulers, and thus they cause these relations to seem natural.

Even the information that this is a photo of the weekly demonstration in Umm Salmona in the Bethlehem area, protesting the separation fence and the lands it is stealing, and that those who are bowing down are actually demonstrators who are praying, cannot erase the impression of prostration, of submission. But that is what is seen in the first glance of a non-Muslim, of someone who connects as a ruler (even if we deny this connection). Those defiant backsides of people who minutes earlier were rescued from the blows of the soldiers, offer another option to Bourdieu: They are not conforming to what we see at first glance, and are imposing categories of their own on the relationship of domination.

For the true Muslim worshiper, says a man named Fahr, a devout Muslim, the soldiers in front of him don’t even exist: “Prayer is not the physical movement. It’s a feeling – the values are connected to the soul, the soul is connected to Allah, the land is connected to Allah, Palestine is connected to Allah, the fence is connected to Allah, and so is destiny. When a Muslim says ‘Allahu Akbar,’ the worshiper feels that Allah is greater than anyone in front of him. And when the worshiper brings his hands to his ears, he leaves everything else behind him. Including the soldiers. He doesn’t see the soldiers.”

Even Palestinians who are not religious do not see a weakness in the worshipers here, and certainly not submission. “If you erase the worshipers from the picture,” says Lama, a totally secular woman, “you won’t understand what the soldiers are doing there at all. They’re disconnected, out of place, UFOs. But if you erase the soldiers and only the worshipers remain, they are in their proper place and all their actions are natural and in harmony with the surroundings.”

Please sign imp. petition about Islamic school in Virginia, USA

From: “Clear Water Blasting Services” <Clear_Water@xtra.co.nz>
Subject: [Islam_1_God_1_Religion_1_Truth] Please sign imp. petition about Islamic school in Virginia, USA

Salam-u-Alaikum,

As you may have seen in the media, a U.S. commission (USCRIF) responsible for monitoring religious freedom around the world seems to be doing just the opposite by recommending to close down a school in Virginia. ISA is a wonderful school that follows the Fairfax county curriculum and further supplements it with Arabic and Islamic education. It has been serving the area for over 23 years teaching students with diversified ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Students at ISA are taught by faculty and staff representing a mosaic of faiths including Muslims, Christians and Jews.

USCRIF has provided no proof or reasoning to their recommendation besides to say that they believe that school may be teaching intolerance. Furthermore, this assumption was made without taking any steps such as visiting ISA campuses, interviewing the staff, reviewing the text books, etc.

In light of the commission’s recommendation, the county of Fairfax has undertaken a review of the school’s text and school is cooperating fully. However, to everyone’s bewilderment, the commission has indicated that even if the county finds nothing wrong with the school, it will not change its recommendation.

Please keep in mind that the commission didn’t recommend any changes or any other intermediary steps to rectify its concerns as any other organization would have done.

An online petition has been started by ISA parents, faculty, students and community members that we encourage you to sign:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/support_isa

It will also be very helpful if you can contact your congressional representatives and make them aware of the issue. You may use the text from the petition for such purpose.

Please forward this email to all your family and friends.

Jazakallah’Khair,
Abdul Majid

Dictatorship : Street Photography Now Illegal In United Kingdom

Dictatorship : Street Photography Now Illegal In United Kingdom

Kurt Nimmo

Prison Planet

Thursday, December 20, 2007

In Merry Old England, it is now illegal to take photographs. If you do so in public, the cops will consider you an active member of al-Qaeda.

“Police have seized films from an amateur photographer, accusing him of obtaining photographs of possibly sensitive material in Hull city centre,” reports Amateur Photographer. “Photo enthusiast Steve Carroll… said that the officers objected to him photographing ’sensitive buildings’, one later adding that people had been anxious about his use of the camera.”

In other words, it is now illegal in Britain to be a street photographer and if you are caught in the process the cops will grab your film, sort of like they did in the Soviet Union.

Soon after everything changed in America, I had a similar experience on the U.S.-Mexico border. A border guard on the U.S. side saw my camera and threatened to steal it if he saw me taking photos. On another occasion, two cop cars surrounded me on the street after somebody made a call, probably mistaking me for Osama bin Laden. I do wear a beard, after all.

I was lucky, though. Others have experienced worse. Consider the following, posted on the Digital Photography Review website:

A friend of mine was out taking interesting shots in a mid-sized U.S. city. At one point, he stopped on the side of a road and took a shot of a gritty-looking power plant (non-nuclear) across a wide river. An interesting shot with several large smoke stacks, etc. At this time, a local police officer pulled over and started questioning him regarding what he was doing. My friend is mild-mannered and not the type to provoke someone, least of all a police officer, but the officer was pretty belligerent. After some time, the office calmed down and told my friend to “be careful”, and then drove off.

A couple weeks later, my friend got a phone call from an FBI person, saying he was following up on some names on a terrorist “watch list”. (Not sure I got the name of this right, but you get the idea.) Lots of questions were asked, and answered, and that seemed to be the end of it, although my friend is undoubtedly still on some list. I should add that my friend is not of Middle-Eastern descent, and was born in the U.S. and has lived here all his life.

Of course, it does not matter if one is of “Middle-Eastern descent,” as the point is to remind all of us that we live in a police state.

BUSTED! SO-CALLED WHITE SUPREMICIST GROUP EXPOSED AS ISRAELI PROPAGANDA OPERATION!

BUSTED! SO-CALLED WHITE SUPREMICIST GROUP EXPOSED AS ISRAELI PROPAGANDA OPERATION!

Every time the Israeli lobbyists in the United States demand more money or more special legal protections, they wave about these so-called “Neo-nazi” or “White Supremacist” groups like Stormfront and the American Nazi Party. AIPAC, ADL, JDL, and their ilk raise tons of money by waving these boogie-men around as a real imminent threat and danger!Yet no matter what laws get passed and no matter how many millions ADL, JDL, etc. raise, Stormfront and the American Nazi Party remain strangely unmolested by either criminal or civil actions.

How very strange!!!

So, earlier today, the Commander of the American Nazi Party, one Bill White, posted an article on the official American Nazis website an article accusing rising Presidential candidate Ron Paul of being a “Secret” White Supremacist.

Now, one might suppose that the American Nazi party would be happy to have a candidate who shares their views, and one might assume that Bill White is smart enough to know that making such a public accusation is going to be quite harmful to the candidate he claims shares his philosophy. Indeed it does appear that Bill White’s accusation is intended to cause as much harm to Ron Paul as possible.

Of course, Bill White’s claim did not do much more than incite a great deal of laughter. But in their haste to get this message out, one of Bill’s minions slipped up.

Rather than cut and paste the text of Bill’s accusations, one of the members of Bill’s blog, apparently to prove the story’s source, screen captured Bill’s article, posted it to various newsgroups and in doing so, let slip a rather interesting secret.

Here is that screen capture.

Click for full size image.

Note the tiny little icon indicated by the arrow in the Windows toolbar. It’s a megaphone. But not just ANY Megaphone, it is the icon proving that the member of Bill White’s American Nazi group is ALSO a member of Megaphone, the Israeli propaganda communications network!

Here is what the Megaphone looks like when it is running.

More about Megaphone can be found at Wikipedia and more about Bill White and his many fronts can be found HERE.

But what we have here is what appears to be a group of self-proclaimed NeoNazis using the Israeli propaganda network!

… which goes a long way to explaining why they are never arrested or sued by those groups that raise so much money using them as scarecrows!
