For years the official versions of the alleged Treblinka and Belzec holocausts were VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL; then suddenly, the masters of the big lie technique claim that the Belzec fable has been scientifically – forensically proven (though they provide no GPR evidence at all), yet with the same breath they claim that not an iota of tangible physical evidence remains at Treblinka! NOTE: The above Archaeology Magazine article / link concerning Chelmno contains the following quote: “’It’s one thing to hear about the crematory, it’s another to stand inside an enormous pit that is filled with human bones,’ says Krzysztof Gorczycae.’” An enormous pit that is filled with human bones? Really? Then why are there no photographs that prove it? There are fourteen photographs accompanying this article, yet not one that shows this alleged enormous pit! Isn’t it odd that a magazine article intended to verify this archeological investigation doesn’t include any legitimate photographic proof of this allegedly proven holocaust within the holocaust? Why is it that it only includes irrelevant photographs and REVERENT NONSENSE about the trash that’s being dug out of an old refuse pit? The only thing that this deluding article gives us is a fraudulent, maliciously fabricated and emotionally charged mental image (i.e. – a cognitive illusion) of an alleged “enormous pit that is filled with human bones.” And if Chelmno isn’t just another holohoax within the holohoax, then why does Juliet Golden, the Jewish author of this spurious ARCHAEOLOGY Magazine article, refuse to accept THE FINAL SOLUTION FORENSIC CHALLENGE TM?

Aside from the obvious fact that there was no Chelmno holocaust, the answer to that question can be found HERE: “Dr. Lucja Pawlicka Nowak, who is in charge of the new (Chelmno) museum: ’We don’t dig inside the graves… In our research of the graves, we just marked off their width.’” Say what? How can you stand inside a grave if you don’t dig inside it? These contradictory claims can’t both be true. (But they can both be false!) Do you see how incredibly easy a little skeptical inquiry and research exposes the malicious fraud of this classic example of the big lie technique? However, if you still believe Jew-lie-t Golden’s illusion that this mystery pit is for real, then surely it represents at least 1% of the alleged mass murder at CHELMNO. So what are you waiting for? We stood there panic-stricken. From beneath the freshly strewn earth streamed rivers of blood. It cried to us from under the earth. My hair turned gray that morning’… ‘With her little son [she] miraculously escaped untouched by the bullets from under a heap of warm bloody bodies… thousands of bodies piled on top of each other… Nevertheless the Germans filled the ravine in; the thin layer of soil moved visibly… But in the case of Babi Yar, witnesses and allegations are blindly given full credence even though they contradict each other and claim the silliest impossibilities… But also in this case, no one ever took the trouble of confirming the various allegations and witness statements by means of detailed forensic investigations.”

Now where have we heard this claptrap before? Babi Yar is a mirror image of the Treblinka fairy tale replete with the asinine magically disappearing Jew yarn. Yes, it’s the same old murder, bury, dig up, burn, crush the bones and rebury, i.e. – “obliterate” the entire evidence story. Only Babi Yar doesn’t even have the transit camp grain of truth for a foundation that Treblinka has. And just like Treblinka, there isn’t a single mass grave, pound of crushed bone or even a single tooth that the Jews can produce to verify their LUDICROUS CLAIM: “What is now coming to the fore is incontrovertible proof that no massacre took place at Babi Yar during the German occupation of Kiev; that the ravine was not used as a mass grave for Jews killed by the Germans… The wartime aerial photos of Kiev provide incontrovertible proof that the so-called historic documentation of the Babi Yar massacre represents fabricated wartime propaganda…”

For THE BABI YAR LIE, you don’t even have to prove 1 %! All you have to do is prove the location of just one mass grave that contains the cremated remains of just 100 people. (The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum claims that the cremated remains of 100,000 people are buried at Babi Yar.)

Even though the scientific method can be (and has been) used to prove or disprove this “historical fact,” here’s an example of how easy just a little skeptical inquiry and honest historiography can be used to expose the Treblinka holohoax for the fraud that it is; Holocaust “expert” Yitzak Arad: “All we do have is survivors’ evidence and testimony… this is the main source for our information about the camp… No trace of the extermination operation remain.” (Arad’s “expert testimony” at the trial of John Demjanjuk.) Yet Treblinka “survivor / eyewitness” Szyja Warszawski claims: “The ashes that remained after the burning were thrown back into the pits where the bodies had been dug out earlier… For some pits only the top layer of bodies was dug out. The rest of the bodies were covered over with soil…” (Warszawski’s “eyewitness testimony” to the Main Commission for the Investigation of the Hitlerite Crimes in Poland.) So who do you believe – the so-called “experts” or the alleged “eyewitnesses?” These contradictory claims can’t both be true. (But they can both be false!) The official Treblinka story is based entirely on fraudulent “eyewitness accounts,” yet numerous “eyewitness accounts” totally contradict the official story. Yet it is literally a thought crime in 15 countries of the world for not simultaneously believing both of these contradictory claims!

But it gets worse. There are many more new lies being told to cover up the old. The holocaust industry’s asinine response to Krege’s scientific / forensic debunking of the alleged Treblinka holocaust is to claim that the reason he found no evidence of the alleged huge mass graves was because the Germans “obliterated” all evidence of their crime. Yet at the same time, MICHAEL SHERMER claims that he’s used the methods of science to prove the orthodox version of the alleged Treblinka holocaust! What’s wrong with this picture? (Other than the fact that he refuses to publish his results.) To illustrate the sophistic machinations that the holocaust industry (which of course includes Shermer and his “Skeptics” Society) has gone through to make this fraudulent claim, look at this montage of quotes from Shermer’s spurious novel-as-true-history – Denying History: “The purpose of this book is to… show precisely, with solid evidence, how we know the Holocaust happened… we must obey the rules of reason and apply the tools of science… Historians both discover and describe the past, just as natural scientists… we can use the methods of science to… marshal the evidence and apply tight logic… This process is practiced by all scientists… historical scientists, geologists, paleontologists and archaeologists, to prove that anything in the past happened… We must review the physical evidence in conjunction with written documents and eyewitness testimonies… As historical scientists, however, we realize that… when the participating scholars play by the rules of science, logic, and reason… hypotheses can be weighed against the evidence… We know that the Holocaust happened through the tried and true method employed by all historical scientists… our book clearly presented the convergence of evidence for how we know the Holocaust happened.”

Well now, that changes everything doesn’t it? If Shermer, who insists that he must see compelling evidence before he believes anything, has proven the holocaust via the scientific method, then there must be tons of tangible physical evidence that proves the alleged Treblinka holocaust, right? But why then didn’t any of this “physical evidence” show up on Krege’s GPR scan? And if the Jews dispute Krege’s results, then why haven’t they conducted their own forensic / GPR examination of Treblinka? They could easily and conclusively prove the alleged Treblinka holocaust in a heartbeat by using real science and modern technology. (IF the story is true.) To illustrate just how easy it is to debunk the big lie that burning bodies makes them magically disappear, look at the following (chapter 4.3) from Arnulf Neumaier’s THE TREBLINKA HOLOCAUST: “Regarding the claim that the 870,000 corpses were eliminated completely without any trace, we must consider the quantities of ashes that remain… The wood ashes remaining would then have weighed approximately 1,000 metric tons… The ash content of a human body makes up about 5.6% of the body’s weight; given a 132 lb. body, this comes to 7.3 lbs. The ashes from the 870,000 burned bodies would thus have weighed 6,387,500 lbs. The total quantity of ashes – wood ashes plus human ashes – would therefore have weighed almost 4,000 metric tons, or 8.6 million pounds, all of which (according to the witnesses) were then mixed with the soil and thrown back into the pits. Even if this quantity of ash had been mixed with the roughly 3.53 million cubic feet of soil excavated from the burial pits, it would be easy to find evidence for human remains of the quantity alleged by the witnesses. It must also be noted that in the incineration of corpses under the conditions specified by the witnesses, the bones would not have turned to ash, but would have remained as bones.”

NOTE: You do understand that even modern cremation techniques don’t reduce bodies to ashes, but rather to BONES, right? Disingenuously referring to the alleged cremated remains as “ashes” rather than correctly referring to them as bones is a crucial component of this big lie / cognitive illusion.

So what’s the Jews’ response when it’s conclusively demonstrated that burning bodies on pyres doesn’t make them magically disappear? “Why, the Germans obliterated all the evidence by crushing the bones,” they shriek. The following is from holocaust “scholar” Yitzhak Arad’s deluding novel (which was written to rectify the damage that was done to the Treblinka holohoax by Steiner’s embarrassing confession of fraud / forgery) BELZEC, SOBIBOR, TREBLINKA, chapter 23 – The Erasure of the Crimes: “The camp command was confronted with the problem of disposing of the large piles of ash and bits of bone that remained… Ultimately it was decided to dump the ash and bits of bone into the ditches that had previously held the bodies and to cover them with a thick layer of sand and dirt… [“Eyewitness”] Abraham Goldfarb relates: …’we secretly placed in the walls of the graves whole skeletons and we wrote on scraps of paper what the Germans were doing at Treblinka. We put the scraps of paper into bottles, which we placed next to the skeletons. Our intention was that if one day someone looked for traces of the Nazis’ crimes, they could indeed be found.’”

NOTE: Historical “truths” are not exempt from THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD. Exposing the lies of the holocaust, the fraud of the final solution and the criminal Jewish conspiracy of the nonsensical pure extermination centers is not “denying” the holocaust. “Reviewing the physical evidence?” – “Analyzing ground and aerial photographs?” – “Like criminologists solving a crime?” Well now Michael, real skeptics and scholars have been waiting for years for you to publish the results of your alleged firsthand examination of the physical evidence and analysis of aerial photographs of Treblinka. If you’re so incredulous that people can come to doubt so much physical evidence and photographic proof, then why do you refuse to publish the results of your alleged research? If there’s so much physical evidence – then let’s see it! What’s wrong Shermer? Your silence is deafening. What happened to your duty to respond? Weber made Holocaust revisionism look too good for Shermer’s liking, and the traditional view of the Holocaust severely deficient. Furthermore, many who saw the debate said that Shermer appeared amateurish, and at times, even foolish. Since that disaster, Shermer has never (to my knowledge) engaged another Holocaust revisionist in public debate. It appears as though Shermer is fearful of undermining the media-created, public image of himself as the “Great Guru of Skepticism.” To cross swords with Holocaust revisionists would call public attention to the severe deficiencies in his own work and Holocaust historiography in general. His strategy seems to be as follows: Never again engage a revisionist in debate, just write about them in mainstream, establishment media outlets. Mark Taper Foundation, The Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles and The Leslie and Susan Gonda (Goldschmied) Foundation? Jewish organizations all. And get this! For six days in October 1999, an Australian forensics team headed by Richard Krege, a qualified electronics engineer, carried out an examination of the soil at the site of the former Treblinka II camp in Poland where, holocaust historians claim, 870,000 Jews were put to death in gas chambers and then buried in huge mass graves. Krege said: “From these scans we could clearly identify the largely undisturbed horizontal stratigraphic layering, better known as horizons, of the soil under the camp site. We know from scans of gravesites and other sites with known soil disturbances, such as quarries, when this natural layering is massively disrupted or missing altogether. Because normal geological processes are very slow acting, disruption of the soil structure would have been detectable even after 60 years. Historians say that the bodies were exhumed and cremated toward the end of the Treblinka camp’s use in 1943, but we found no indication that any mass graves ever existed.”

According to the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (1997), “a total of 870,000 people” were allegedly killed and buried at Treblinka between July 1942 and April 1943. Then, between April and July 1943, the hundreds of thousands of corpses were allegedly dug up and burned on large grids made of railroad rails. Krege’s team used an $80,000.00 GROUND PENETRATION RADAR (GPR) device, which sends out vertical radar signals that are visible on a computer monitor. GPR detects any large-scale disturbances in the soil structure to a normal effective depth of four or five meters, and sometimes up to ten meters. (GPR is routinely used around the world by geologists, archeologists and police.) In its Treblinka investigation, the team carefully examined the entire Treblinka II site, especially the alleged “mass graves” portion, but found no evidence of individual graves, bone remains, human ashes or wood ashes. According to the orthodox version of the holocaust, at Treblinka the Germans murdered and buried, then dug up, burned and crushed the bones, and then – REBURIED all the crushed bone and ash of 870,000 Jews INTO THE SAME MASS GRAVES; thus, they allegedly - “obliterated all evidence of their crime.” If you’re unfamiliar with the controversies surrounding this “judicially proven fact,” then it’s imperative that before you begin reading this site, you understand the forensic argumentation presented in this link HERE:

Nothing remains? Who in their right mind could believe that a perfect crime could be committed while murdering 870,000 people? Everyone knows that at every crime scene - EVIDENCE IS LEFT BEHIND: “Cremated remains weigh between three and nine pounds.” In order to believe the orthodox Treblinka holocaust legend, you must believe this: The Germans, by putting a layer of soil over millions of pounds of crushed bone and ash, tens of millions of teeth and tens of thousands of bullets and shell casings somehow, magically - “utterly eradicated” all evidence of their crime!

Utterly eradicated? How about utter nonsense? Why would the Germans go through all that work, knowing full well there would still be millions of pounds of evidence left behind, then put all that incriminating evidence right back into the very graves that they allegedly had just dug all that evidence out of? It’s understandable when a toddler believes that he’s made himself invisible while playing peek-a-boo by covering his eyes, but how do you explain the insanity of the holocaust “scholars” who believe that a layer of soil can make millions of pounds of evidence magically disappear?

So why do the true believers of holocaust orthodoxy accept the magically disappearing Jew “theory” when it’s been scientifically / forensically proven that it’s a fraudulent cognitive illusion? Are they truly insane, or is it because they’re just cowards who can’t handle the shrieks of denier, racist and anti-Semite hurled at anyone who dares to question this nonsensical dogma? Remember, in the “free democracies” of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland, you can literally be sent to prison for refusing to believe the official lies of the alleged Treblinka holocaust. Why do you think the Jews would rather have people sent to prison for not believing their nonsensical manufactured history than actually locating the alleged huge mass graves? Every alleged German “death camp” is best understood when looked at as a holocaust within the holocaust. No matter what anyone thinks about the holocaust per se, one thing is eminently clear – the Treblinka holocaust didn’t happen. To believe that the Germans could “obliterate” all evidence of the murder of 870,000 Jews requires incredible gullibility and a lack of intelligence, logic and critical thinking skills. It requires a belief in magic and a rejection of criminology, archeology and forensic science. IF there was a Treblinka holocaust, then there are huge mass graves filled with millions of pounds of crushed bone to prove it. Until the alleged huge mass graves of Treblinka are found – NO mass graves = NO crushed bone = NO burning of bodies = NO homicidal gas chambers = NO mass murder = NO death camp = NO Treblinka holocaust = THE TRUTH – TREBLINKA II WAS A TRANSIT CAMP, and the so called gas chambers were, in reality, delousing facilities designed to protect the health and prolong the lives of the shameless liars who fraudulently claimed to be the victims of a genocidal extermination program. It takes a special kind of credulous dullard to believe the preposterous Treblinka holohoax tale and a special kind of self-deceiving coward to deny the significance of this fraud. Remember, there are only two options: extermination center (for those who believe in magic) and TRANSIT CAMP (for those who believe in the scientific method). There is no third option – and only one truth.

NOTE: In 1990, Shmuel Krakowski, the archives director of Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Center, finally admitted that the Jewish soap story was a lie. This ludicrous atrocity propaganda had been “proven” at the Nuremberg show trial and staunchly defended as irrefutable historical fact for more than 45 years. In jettisoning this absurdity, the holocaust scholars were no more denying history than someone who refuses to believe the absurd Treblinka holocaust legend. They were, in reality, affirming history. But they did it reluctantly. They only admitted the lie because it had become untenable. KRAKOWSKI ADMITTED: “Historians have concluded that soap was not made from human fat. When so many people deny the holocaust ever happened, why give them something to use against the truth?”

The truth indeed. Historical “truths” are not exempt from the scientific method! There it was made abundantly plain Treblinka was nothing less than a deliberate attempt to hoodwink the reader into believing the book was a real work of history… Other readers, including many formerly sympathetic and supportive scholars and journalists now complain bitterly of having been intentionally deceived by Steiner and his novel-as-true-history on the Treblinka concentration camp… What he and others insisted in the book’s Introduction, Preface, and Afterword was a scholarly chronicle of certain tragic events had, in fact, been a melodramatic novel… When he wrote the most important part of his book… Steiner had finally to confess that he relied almost solely on his own imagination.”

Despite the fact that it’s been over twenty years since Jean-François Steiner admitted that his fraudulent book Treblinka was purely the product of his imagination, this novel-as-true-history, this falsification / forgery, is still readily available for loan in libraries all across America. And it’s still cataloged under non-fiction! How? Because it is now referred to as a “novelized” historical account! (Welcome to the Alice in Wonderland world of holocaust “scholarship,” where holocaust “history” is what the Jews say it is, nothing more – nothing less.) Israel denies Italian delegation entry into Gaza

A delegation of renowned Italians was denied entry into the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces on Friday. The delegation had been promoted by members of the Italian Parliament, academics and Christian dignitaries. Several members of Parliament were among those who traveled to Gaza on the delegation, but were denied entry at the Israeli-controlled border by Israeli troops.

The group had planned to meet with Palestinian officials and humanitarian organizations, to help raise awareness worldwide of the plight of the Palestinian population in Gaza. They called Gaza a ‘concentration camp’, in which the Palestinian population is completely imprisoned with no way in or out, under a total siege by Israeli forces that control every part of the border.

In response to the Israeli denial of entry to the Italian delegation, the Popular Committee Against the Siege, based in Gaza, issued a statement addressed to the Italian delegation: “The Popular Committee against Siege (PCAS) is very sorry for what happened to you, but this is an indication of the false claims of our oppressors. Israelis claim that they are democratic, but you have seen that they are barbarous by denying your entry to Gaza strip. This shows how Israeli democracy is false.”

The Gaza Strip remains under complete closure for the fourth straight month, with its population of 1.4 million Palestinians trapped inside, unable to move or carry out commerce with the rest of the world.

The Italian delegation also requested an audience with the Israeli Foreign Ministry to discuss the Gaza closure, but the Israeli officials refused to meet with them.

Lt-Col Jordan was the highest-ranking soldier to have been charged

The only US army officer to be charged over the Iraq jail abuse scandal has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the US military authorities. Lt-Col Steven Jordan was in charge of the Abu Ghraib prison’s interrogation unit when pictures of US soldiers abusing prisoners were taken in 2003.

He was cleared of mistreatment charges in August, but convicted of disobeying orders not to discuss the inquiry.

That conviction has now been thrown out, angering human rights campaigners.

They say the US military failed to investigate those further up the chain of command over the Abu Ghraib scandal, despite promising to do so.

Administrative reprimand

Eleven lower-ranking soldiers have been convicted of carrying out abuses at Abu Ghraib – with sentences ranging from a few hours of community service to up to 10 years in prison.

Lt-Col Jordan did not appear in any of the photographs, which showed naked Iraqi prisoners forced to lie on top of each other and others with dog leads around their necks.

His defence had argued that although he was nominally in charge of the interrogation centre, Lt-Col Jordan did not have direct control over the interrogations.

Major General Richard J Rowe, commander of the Military District of Washington, threw out the conviction this week and ordered that Lt-Col Jordan receive an administrative reprimand, which leaves no written judicial record of the case.

But human rights advocates said the decision sent a troubling message.

“It could not be more clear that prisoner abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan resulted from policies and practices authorised by high-level officials, including military and civilian leaders,” said Hira Shamsi, of the National Security Project of the American Civil Liberties Union.

“Although the abuse was systemic and widespread, the accountability for it has been anything but.”

Lt-Col Jordan told the Associated Press he agreed that there were enlisted soldiers and officers responsible for the abuse at the prison who escaped prosecution.

But he said he felt victimised by press coverage that was eager for an officer to be blamed.

“Everybody that’s seen all the evidence and looked at it, or the lack of it, realises that Steve Jordan had nothing to do with abusing detainees at Abu Ghraib,” he said

How the New England Journal of Medicine Undercounted Iraqi Civilian Deaths

Almost five years into the destruction of Iraq, the orthodox rule of thumb for assessing statistical tabulations of the civilian death toll is becoming clear: any figure will do so long as it is substantially lower than that computed by the Johns Hopkins researchers in their 2004 and 2006 studies. Their findings, based on the most orthodox sampling methodology and published in the Lancet after extensive peer review, estimated the post-invasion death toll by 2006 at about 655,000. Predictably, this shocking assessment drew howls of ignorant abuse from self-interested parties, including George Bush (“not credible”) and Tony Blair.

Now we have a new result complied by the Iraqi Ministry of Health under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization and published in the once reputable New England Journal of Medicine, (NEJM) estimating the number of Iraqis murdered, directly or indirectly, by George Bush and his willing executioners at 151,000–far less than the most recent Johns Hopkins estimate. Due to its adherence to the rule cited above, this figure has been greeted with respectful attention in press reports, along with swipes at the Hopkins effort as having, as the New York Times had to remind readers, “come under criticism for its methodology.”

However, as a careful and informed reading makes clear, it is the new report that guilty of sloppy methodology and tendentious reporting — evidently inspired by the desire to discredit the horrifying Hopkins findings, which, the NEJM study triumphantly concludes “considerably overestimated the number of violent deaths.” In particular, while Johns Hopkins reported that the majority of post invasion deaths were due to violence, the NEJM serves up the comforting assessment that only one sixth of deaths in this period have been due to violence.

Among the many obfuscations in this new report, the most fundamental is the blurred distinction between it and the survey it sets out to discredit. The Johns Hopkins project sought to enumerate the number of excess deaths due to all causes in the period following the March 2003 invasion as compared with the death rate prior to the invasion, thus giving a number of people who died because Bush invaded. Post hoc, propter hoc. This new study, on the other hand, explicitly sought to analyze only deaths by violence, imposing a measure of subjectivity on the findings from the outset. For example, does the child who dies because the local health clinic has been looted in the aftermath of the invasion count as a casualty of the war, or not? As CounterPunch’s statistical consultant Pierre Sprey reacted after reading the full NEJM paper, “They don’t say they are comparing entirely different death rates. That’s not science, it’s politics.”Superficially at least, both the Hopkins team and the new study followed the same methodology in conducting their surveys: interviewing a random sample of households drawn from randomly selected “clusters” of houses around the country, in which the head of the household was interviewed. While the Johns Hopkins team demanded death certificates as confirmation of deaths and their cause, the NEJM study had no such requirement. That survey was based on a sample of 9345 households, while the 2006 Johns Hopkins report drew on a sample of 1849 households. In reports on the NEJM study, much respectful attention was paid the fact that their sample was bigger, which, uninformed reporters assumed, had to mean that it was more accurate. In fact, as their papers’ own pollsters could have told them, beyond a certain point the size of a sample makes less and less difference to the accuracy of the information, with accuracy increasing as a factor of the square root of the ratio between the two.

Far, far more important than the size of the sample, however, is the degree to which the overall sample is truly random, that is, trule representative of the population sampled and here is where the first of many serious questions about the NEJM effort arise. As the authors themselves admit, they did not visit a significant proportion of the original designated clusters: “Of the 1086 originally selected clusters, 115 (10.6%) were not visited because of problems with security,” meaning they were inconveniently situated in Anbar province, Baghdad, and two other areas that were dangerous to visit, (especially for Iraqi government employees from a Shia-controlled ministry.) While such reluctance is understandable–one of those involved was indeed killed during the survey–it also meant that areas with very high death tolls were excluded from the survey.

To fill the gap, the surveyors reached for the numbers advanced by the Iraqi Body Count, (IBC) a U.K. based entity that relies entirely on newspaper reports of Iraqi deaths to compile their figures. Due to IBC’s policy of posting minimum and maximum figures, currently standing at 80,419 and 87,834, their numbers carry a misleading air of scientific precision. As the group itself readily concedes, the estimate must be incomplete, since it omits deaths that do not make it into the papers, a number that is likely to be high in a society as violently chaotic as today’s Baghdad, and higher still outside Baghdad where it is even harder for journalists to operate.

Nevertheless, the NEJM study happily adopted a formula in which they compared the ratio between their figures from a province they did visit to the IBC number for that province, and then used that ratio to adjust their own figures for places they did not dare go. Interestingly, the last line of the table on page 8 of the Supplementary Appendix to the report, “adjustment for missing clusters using IBC data,” reveals that in using the Body Count’s dubious figures to fill the holes in their Baghdad data, the formula they employ actually revises downward the rate of violent deaths on what they label “low mortality provinces.”

A paragraph in the published abstract of the report, blandly titled “Adjustment for Reporting Bias” contains an implicit confession of the subjectivity with which the authors reached their conclusions. As Sprey points out, “they say ‘the level of completeness in reporting of death was 62%,’ but they give no real explanation of how they arrive at that figure.” Les Roberts, one of the principal authors of the Johns Hopkins studies, has commented: “We confirmed our deaths with death certificates, they did not. As the NEJM study’s interviewers worked for one side in this conflict, [the U.S.- sponsored government] it is likely that people would be unwilling to admit violent deaths to the study workers.”

The NEJM does cite an effort to check information given by the household heads by also interviewing household daughters about any deaths among their siblings. Again, this data is rife with inconsistencies, particularly in the siblings’ reports of pre- and post- invasion deaths, incocnistencies egregious enough thatthese interview results were not folded into the calculations used to determine the report’s conclusions.

Further evidence of tendentious assessment surfaces in the section blandly titled “Response Rates” in which the authors report that “Of the households that did not respond, 0.7% were absent for an extended period of time, and 1.1% of households were vacant dwellings.” Given current Iraqi conditions, houses are likely to be vacant, or their owners absent for long periods, because something nasty happened there–i.e. higher death rates. Yet, as Sprey points out, there is no effort by the authors to account for this in their conclusions.

As a statistician, Sprey is most affronted by the enormities committed under the heading “Statistical Analysis” in the NEJM paper, where it is stated, “Robust confidence intervals were estimated with the use of the jackknife procedure.” The “confidence interval” cited in the report is 104,000 to 223,000 with a 95% uncertainty range. This does not mean, as many laypeople assume, that there is an 85% chance that the “true number” lies somewhere between those two figures.

Sprey explains its true meaning this way:

“If you went out and did the same study using the same methods and the same size sample, but with different households, a thousand times, then 950 of those studies would come up with a figure between 104,000 and 223,000. But the ‘jackknife’ they refer to is simply a procedure by which you don’t rely on data to estimate the confidence interval.

They admit in “Statistical Analysis” that their confidence interval is simply a calculation based on their numerical guesses quantifying the unknown size of the three key uncertainties in their survey: the real death rates in clusters they didn’t dare visit; the percentage of unreported deaths in their sample; the proportion of the Iraq population that has fled since the invasion. So this is a computerized guess on what the confidence interval might be without using any of the actual data scatter from their survey. This in sharp contrast to the Johns Hopkins team, who rigorously used the data of their survey to estimate their confidence interval. To call it ‘robust’ is simply a disgrace. It’s not robust, it’s simply speculation.”

If any further confirmation of the essential worthlessness of the NEJM effort, it comes in the bizarre conclusion that violent deaths in the Iraqi population have not increased over the course of the occupation. As Iraq has descended into a bloody civil war during that time, it should seem obvious to the meanest intelligence that violent deaths have to have increased. Indeed, even Iraq Body Count tracks the same rate of increase as the Hopkins survey, while NEJM settles for a mere 7% in recent years. As Roberts points out: “They roughly found a steady rate of violence from 2003 – 2006. Baghdad morgue data, Najaf burial data, Pentagon attack data, and our data all show a dramatic increase over 2005 and 2006.”

These distortions come as less of a surprise on examination of page 6 of the supplementary appendix, an instructive table that reveals that the 279 men and women engaged in collecting data for the survey labored under the supervision of no fewer than 128 local, field, and central supervisors and “editors.” Senior supervisors were shipped to Amman for a training course, though why the Iraqi government should want to send its own officials abroad for training is unexplained, unless of course some other government wanted a hand in the matter.

Finally, there is the matter of the New England Journal of Medicine lending its imprimatur to this farrago. Once upon a time, under the great editor Marsha Angell, this was an organ unafraid to cock a snoot at power. In particular, Angell refused to pander to the mendacities of the drug companies, thereby earning their undying enmity. Much has evidently changed, as the recruiting ad for the U.S. Army on the home page of the current New England Journal reminds us.

Iraqi Civilian Deaths Massive by Any Measure

How many Iraqi civilians have lost their lives as a result of gunshots and bombings since the US military invaded that oil-rich Arab nation nearly five years ago?

Credible estimates for the period March 2003 until June 2006 have ranged from a high of 600,000 to about 47,000. The first figure was reported by researchers from Johns Hopkins in The Lancet, a venerable British medical journal, back in October 2006. The second one was projected by the independent organization Iraq Body Count (IBC).

This week, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Iraqi Health Ministry released a joint survey suggesting that no less than 151,000 Iraqis died violently during that time frame.

The US government does not tally violence-related Iraqi deaths, nor does it intend to. However, a little over a year ago, President George W. Bush casually suggested that the numbers could be around 30,000.

So which figures are reliable? It is difficult to say for certain, although there is no doubt that the US military invasion and occupation is largely responsible for the huge loss of human life in Iraq.

According to WHO and Iraqi researchers, since the invasion, violence has been the leading cause of death for Iraqi men between the ages of 15 and 59. About half of these deaths have taken place in the capital city of Baghdad, according to the survey, which was largely based on interviews with more than 9,000 households in nearly 1,000 villages and neighborhoods across the country.

The study did not attempt to determine whether the deaths were caused by Coalition Forces, militia groups or others. It also omits the period of the most intense sectarian violence from mid-2006 to mid-2007.

The findings and methodology of the study, entitled “Violence-Related Mortality in Iraq from 2002 to 2006,” were published in the Jan. 8 online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

The survey indicates that a year after the US invasion, about 128 Iraqis were dying every day. That average remained more or less the same until June 2006 when the study was completed.

Though successful in their efforts to complete the survey, researchers acknowledged that at times they faced great difficulties in obtaining information due to ongoing violence and displacement.

“Assessment of the death toll in conflict situations is extremely difficult and household survey results have to be interpreted with caution,” said Mohamed Ali, a WHO statistician and the study’s co-author.

As a result, the study’s statistical estimates suggest that war-related deaths range anywhere from 104,000 to 223,000.

If there is no comprehensive death registration and hospital reporting available, said Ali, then “household surveys are the best we can do.”

The new estimate is three times higher than the death toll compiled through careful screening of media reports and other data by Iraq Body Count and about four times lower than a smaller-scale household survey conducted by The Lancet.

The Lancet study was based on previously accepted methods for calculating deaths rates to estimate the numbers of “excess” Iraqi deaths after the 2003 invasion at 426,369 to 793,663. It said the most likely figure was in the middle range: 654,965.

Almost 92 percent of those dead, according to the study, were killed by bullets, bombs or US air strikes, a stunning toll that was more than 10 times the number of deaths estimated by any organization at the time.

The figures projected in the June 2006 report sent shockwaves across the United States and the world. It was widely covered by the mainstream press, amid calls for the Bush administration to reconsider its Iraq policy.

Some critics have expressed discomfort with The Lancet’s methodology, arguing that the statistical analysis is deeply flawed and reeks of political bias against the United States.

Last week, in a lengthy article published in the National Journal, writers Neil Munro and Carl Cannon concluded that the study not only “lacks transparency in the data,” but also disengagement from “ideological leanings.”

Les Roberts, co-author of The Lancet study, said in a statement Friday that, “The NEJM article found a doubling of mortality after the invasion, we found a 2.4-fold increase. Thus, we roughly agree on the number of excess deaths. The big difference is that we found almost all the increase from violence, they found one-third of the increase from violence.”

“This new estimate is almost four times the ‘widely accepted’ [Iraq Body Count] number from June of 2006, our estimate was 12 times higher. Both studies suggest things are far worse than our leaders have reported,” he said.

Roberts also said the NEJM data could reflect an under-reporting of violent deaths. “It is likely that people would be unwilling to admit violent deaths to the study workers who were government employees,” he noted.

“Finally, their data suggests one-sixth of deaths over the occupation through June 2006 were from violence. Our data suggests a majority of deaths were from violence. The morgue and graveyard data I have seen is more in keeping with our results.”

For their part, the WHO-Iraq study’s authors openly acknowledge that they were not able to reach out to all the families they had planned to conduct interviews with, in part because many people had fled their homes.

“[All] these factors were taken into account in the analysis as they may affect the accuracy of the survey work,” said Salih Mahdi Motlab Al-Hasanawi, Iraq’s minister of health. “Nonetheless, the survey results indicate a massive death toll since the beginning of the conflict.”

WHO officials said the study was originally meant to help Iraqi government plan its health policies and services. In addition to deaths, the survey also focused on other health-related issues, such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and domestic violence.

US troops kill Iraqi civilian north of al-Fallujah Saturday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 7:45pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a US patrol shot and killed an Iraqi civilian in his car north of al-Fallujah at 4pm local time Saturday afternoon.

Yaqen reported a source in the Iraqi puppet police who asked not to be identified as saying that a US patrol happened upon an Iraqi in his car near a branch of the Tigris river, near Nazim ath-Tharthar, 20km north of al-Fallujah, and opened fire on the car. The US attack killed the driver.

Afterwards, the Americans searched the man’s car and found no weapons. His corpse was sent to al-Fallujah hospital for delivery to his family.

Baghdad.

US bombing of ‘Arab Jabbur a “horrendous, cold-blooded massacre” local residents say.

Most victims were women, children. Dozens of families still buried under rubble as US ‘security cordon’ around bomb scene prevents rescue and recovery efforts.

In a dispatch posted at 1:12pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that residents of the ‘Arab Jabbur area who witnessed the massive American bombing of their region on Thursday have said that most of the victims of the savage US air assault were women and children.

At dawn on Thursday, 10 January, the United States sent B-1 strategic bombers and F-18 fighter bombers into the area, dropping 38 bombs weighing more than 21 tons on civilian targets in ‘Arab Jabbur.

Yaqen reported local residents as saying that the American claims that the raids “killed dozens of gunmen” in the area were totally untrue. Witnesses said that the American attacks struck houses of residents and that most of the dead were women and children. In one home a family of 10 was completely wiped out, the residents said.

The bodies of those victims and an uncalculated number of others still lie buried in piles of rubble, the like of which has not been seen since the start of the American aggression against Iraq, Yaqen reported.

US forces have imposed a “security cordon” around the area where the bombing took place, making it impossible for local residents to do anything to dig out the remains or the dead or to search for survivors possibly still buried under the rubble. Hundreds of US troops in dozens of armored vehicles and Humvees drove into the area after the bombing – which lasted about half an hour – stopped.

The residents of ‘Arab Jabbur expressed anger and outrage over the silence maintained by the US-installed puppet regime in Baghdad over the carnage inflicted upon them in the barbarous aerial assault that killed innocent women and children. Local residents appealed to international humanitarian organizations to intervene to help the wounded and recover the bodies of the dead from their ruined homes. They said that what the US had perpetrated on the pretext of chasing “gunmen” was a horrendous, cold-blooded massacre.

Sectarian murder spree continues: two more bodies found dumped in Baghdad Saturday.

In a dispatch posted at 8:52pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi puppet police had recovered the bodies of two unidentified victims of sectarian murder that had been dumped in eastern and southern Baghdad.

Yaqen reported that one of the bodies was picked up in the Zuyunah neighborhood of eastern Baghdad and the other in the southern Baghdad suburb of ad-Durah.

US admits death of Marine in al-Anbar Province Friday.

In a dispatch posted at 7:30pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US had admitted that one more of its Marines had died in Iraq.

Yaqen reported a communiqué issued by the American military as saying that an American Marine had died in a “non-combat incident” in al-Anbar Province on Friday. In keeping with the US policy of concealing facts regarding American losses the US statement provided no other details, not even an indication as to where in the 138,501 square kilometers of al-Anbar the incident occurred.

Bomb targets US patrol in Baghdad’s Madinat as-Sadr area.

In a dispatch posted at 1:45pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that three bombs exploded in two incidents in Baghdad on Saturday morning.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police as saying that a bomb exploded by a patrol of US troops on Muzaffar Sqaure in the Madinat as-Sadr area of Baghdad. No information on the nature or extent of casualties was available because the Americans cordoned off the area after the blast.

In a separate incident, two bombs went off on Beirut Square, wounding two people and damaging a number of shops.

Salah ad-Din Province.
Tuz Khurmatu.

Armed attack leaves five civilians dead in Tuz Khurmatu Saturday evening.

In a dispatch posted at 8:30pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a group of armed men stormed a village near Tuz Khurmatu, 250km north of Baghdad on Saturday evening and killed five civilians.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police said that the individuals killed in the attack were all members of one family. The source did not indicate which armed group had carried out the attack or why.

Ad-Dulu‘iyah.

House raids leave two collaborator “Awakening” policemen dead.

In a dispatch posted at 12:35pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that armed men killed an officer in the former Iraqi army as well as two members of the collaborationist “Awakening” police in two separate attacks in eastern ad-Dulu‘iyah, 97km north of Baghdad at dawn on Saturday.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police as saying that armed men attacked a house in the village of ad-Dawudiyah to the east of ad-Dulu‘iyah and killed Lieutenant Colonel Ziyad Ibrahim of the Iraqi Army before the US invasion in 2003. Also killed in the attack was Ibrahim’s 14-year-old son. The reason for the double murder was unknown.

The source said that in a second incident, armed men opened fire on another house, located near the first. In that instance the attackers killed the father of the house and three of his sons. The man and one of his sons worked for the collaborationist “Awakening” police.

Diyala Province.
Al-Miqdadiyah.

US, puppet forces carry mount offensive near al-Miqdadiyah Saturday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 11:20pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US forces accompanied by their Iraqi puppet army allies carried out extensive operations in the area of al-Miqdadiyah, 85km northeast of Baghdad on Saturday afternoon.

Yaqen reported that the offensive was still underway as of the time of reporting. US and puppet forces carried out a similar offensive in the as-Salam area near Ba‘qubah on Friday.

Car bomb wounds four puppet security troops in al-Miqdadiyah.

In a dispatch posted at 4:25pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a car bomb exploded by puppet regime security forces in the al-Miqdadiyah area, 85km northeast of Baghdad on Saturday.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet security forces as saying that the car bomb went off near a checkpoint in the al-Wajihiyah area of al-Miqdadiyah and wounded four of he puppet troops manning the post. All were hospitalized for treatment.

Babil Province.
Al-Hillah.

Two US troops wounded in operations in northern Babil Province Saturday.

In a dispatch posted at 9:05pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US forces staged an airborne landing in the ash-Shakhah 4 area 50km south of Baghdad on Saturday.

Yaqen reported as source in the puppet Iraqi army as saying that US and Iraqi puppet troops in helicopters carried out an operation in the area of ash-Shakhah 4 with F-16 fighter-bombers flying air cover. The source said that two of the Americans and one officer in the Iraqi puppet forces were wounded in the operation.

Ninwa Province.
Al-Mawsil.

Three high-tension electrical towers sabotaged near al-Mawsil.

In a dispatch posted at 5:25pm Baghdad time Saturday evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that three high-tension towers northwest of al-Mawsil were blown up in acts of sabotage by unknown parties.

Yaqen reported Engineer ‘Umar Khalil, the General Director for Electricity for Ninwa Province as saying that as a result of the destruction of the three towers, the electricity grid was cut off from the generator at the al-Mawsil Dam, reducing electric power.

The directorate of electricity worked hard to link the gas powered al-Mawsil station to the grid so as to make up for the lack of electricity in Bayji. This was finally accomplished, Khalil said, but the loss of the three electrical towers was a setback and a grave threat to electric power in the city.

Bombs explode in al-Mawsil Saturday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 11:30pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that two bombs exploded in al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad, in two separate incidents on Saturday morning.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police as saying that one bomb went off by a puppet police patrol in the al-Muharibeen area to the north of the city. The blast wounded one puppet policeman who was taken to al-Mawsil General Hospital for treatment.

The second bomb went off in the az-Zanjili area of southwestern al-Mawsil near the soft drink factory. No casualties were reported in that attack.

Fighters assault puppet police station in al-Mawsil al-Jadidah.

In a dispatch posted at 10:30am Baghdad time Saturday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that armed men distributed leaflets in the al-Mawsil al-Jadidah area (“New al-Mawsil”) threatening to blow up the new puppet police station in the district.

Yaqen reported eyewitnesses as saying that the leaflets gave the puppet police a grace period during which to vacate the station before it is blown up.

Meanwhile, a source in the puppet police said that clashes took place between armed men who assaulted the station and puppet policemen who were allegedly able to beat back the attack.

Al-Qadisiyah Province.
Ad-Diwaniyah.

Puppet regime forces arrest mufti for Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in ad-Diwaniyah.

In a dispatch posted at 2:25pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi puppet regime forces arrested the Mufti (jurisconsult) of the pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia operating in the city of ad-Diwaniyah, 180km south of Baghdad.

Yaqen reported an official in the Iraqi puppet regime’s security services, who asked not to be identified, as saying that Huwayn al-Qasir issued religious law rulings permitting the killing of puppet policemen and officials of the US-installed puppet regime in ad-Diwaniyah. The source said he was arrested by puppet regime troops in the course of a raid on a house in the al-Iskan neighborhood and was then taken to be interrogated.

Ad-Diwaniyah has recently been the scene of fighting between the Shi‘i sectarian puppet regime forces backed by the US, and their rivals in the pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia.
