Why is a Scot newspaper the only one to report this from Somalia?
Troop pull-out leaves government on brink – Ethiopian withdrawal marks end of disastrous intervention that sparked new violence and suffering
SOMALIA’S FRAGILE government appears to be on the brink of collapse. Islamist insurgents now controls large parts of southern and central Somalia – and are continuing to launch attacks inside the capital, Mogadishu.
Ethiopia, which launched a US-backed military intervention in Somalia in December 2006 in an effort to drive out an Islamist authority in Mogadishu, is now pulling out its troops.
…
A shipment of Ethiopian weapons, including tanks, left Mogadishu port last month as part of the withdrawal. Bringing the equipment back to Ethiopia by land would have been impossible – analysts believe Ethiopian troops and their Somali government allies control just three small areas in Mogadishu and a few streets in Baidoa, the seat of parliament. There are now estimated to be just 2500 Ethiopian soldiers left inside Somalia, down from 15,000-18,000 at the height of the war.
Ethiopian troops still in Baidoa are under heavy attacks. Troops from the U.S. supported Somali warlord ‘government’ surrendered to Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) fighters. Read the rest of this entry » |

Reversal of fortune leaves Kabul under Taliban’s thumb
October 14, 2008 at 12:31 PM EDT
KABUL — At a gas station on the outskirts of Kabul, lounging in the shade of a transport truck, Mohammed Raza describes how he escaped death.
Last month, a U.S. contractor promised him $10,000 if he’d drive a truck full of diesel from Kabul to Kandahar, offering seven times more than he could earn by transporting his usual shipments of sugar. But the Taliban forbid drivers from carrying fuel to the foreign troops, he said, and the insurgents run checkpoints on the road between Afghanistan’s two largest cities. He rejected the offer. One of his friends took the assignment, he said, and the Taliban cut off his head.

American Teenage Kids Decide Who Lives or Dies in Iraq
By: James Bamford on: 15.10.2008 [01:14 ]
You probably assume that high-level military and intelligence officers decide who gets thrown into the Abu Ghraib prison to get tortured, and whose house gets bombed in Iraq.
That’s not how it works.
It turns out that kids fresh out of high school decide. Specifically, young people with only sixty-three weeks of training in in standard Arabic at Monterey, California make these life-or-death calls. They have usually have no training in Iraqi dialects, and don’t have any real-world experience.
After their stint at Monterey, they are transferred to Fort Gordon, Georgia, where they work for the NSA. In that capacity, they listen into phone calls between Iraqis, and decide who lives, who gets tortured, who dies:

NSA Tapped 9/11 Hijackers’ Phone Calls for 2 Years – Inside the U.S.
Israeli False Flag anybody? Mossad-Comverse controlled the phone lines…
By: Crack_Smoke_Republican on: 15.10.2008 [01:06 ]
I’ve previously pointed out that the U.S. government heard the 9/11 plans from the hijackers’ own mouth. Most of what I wrote about involved the NSA and other intelligence services tapping top Al Qaeda operatives’ phone calls outside the U.S.
However, it turns out that the NSA was also tapping the hijackers’ phone calls inside the U.S.
