DAMASCUS, (PIC)– A delegation of the international union of Muslim religious scholars led by Dr. Yousef Al-Qaradawi met on Monday in Damascus with Palestinian resistance leaders during which the delegates tabled the idea of their Arab and Islamic tour. Hamas in a press release said that the delegation members said that they absolutely backed the Palestinian people in face of the Israeli occupation forces’ aggression It added that their tour, which carried them to Qatar, Saudi Arab and Syria so far, would rally Arab and Muslim support for the Gaza Strip in face of the IOF attacks. The statement noted that Khaled Mishaal, the political bureau chairman of Hamas, appreciated the delegation’s efforts in a statement on behalf of the resistance leaders attending the meeting. He asked the scholars to continue in their efforts to mobilize the Arab and Islamic masses in support of the Palestine cause. The 12-member delegation is scheduled to arrive in Jordan in the next leg of its tour. |

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela expelled the ambassador to Israel on Tuesday in protest over the offensive in Gaza only hours after leftist President Hugo Chavez called the attacks a Palestinian “holocaust.”
The socialist Mr. Chavez, a harsh critic of Israel and the United States, in recent years has frequently withdrawn Venezuela’s diplomatic envoys amid bilateral disputes and last year kicked out the U.S. ambassador over a conflict involving allied Bolivia.
The OPEC nation’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Israel’s campaign constituted “flagrant violations of International Law” and the use of “state terrorism.”
“For the reasons mentioned above, the government of Venezuela has decided to expel the Ambassador of Israel and part of the personnel of the Embassy of Israel,” the statement said.

In The Iron Wall (2001), Israeli historian Avi Shlaim shows that in July 1981, US diplomat Philip Habib brokered a ceasefire between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel. For the next year, the PLO infuriated Israel by refusing to violate the ceasefire and thereby provide an excuse for Israel’s long-planned attack on PLO refugee camps and bases in Lebanon. Then, on 3 June 1982, a member of the Abu Nidal organization shot and wounded Shlomo Argov, the Israeli ambassador in London. Abu Nidal, or Sabri Khalil al-Banna, was a Palestinian, but he was anything but a PLO stalwart: “Abu Nidal was supported by Iraq in his struggle against Arafat’s ‘capitulationist’ leadership of the PLO. Abu Nidal customarily referred to Arafat as ‘the Jewess’s son.’ The PLO had passed a death sentence on Abu Nidal for assassinating some of its moderate members who advocated a dialogue with Israel.”
The next day, Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin called an emergency cabinet meeting. When his advisor Gideon Machanaimi and Avraham Shalom (the head of the General Security Service) began to discuss the nature of the Abu Nidal organization, Begin cut them off: “‘They are all PLO.’ [Army Chief of Staff] Rafael Eitan was equally dismissive. Shortly before entering the conference room, an intelligence aide told him that Abu Nidal’s men were evidently responsible for the assassination attempt. ‘Abu Nidal, Abu Shmidal,’ he sneered; ‘we have to strike at the PLO!’”
Two days later, Israel invaded Lebanon, which would kill over 18,000 people, including the massacres of Palestinian refugees at Sabra and Shatila, and push Lebanon further into a morass of imperial and sectarian violence. Of course, the lying excuse endlessly proffered for the invasion, enshrined in its nickname “Operation Peace for the Galilee,” and obligingly circulated by the American media, was that Israel could no longer be expected to tolerate a constant barrage of PLO rockets across its northern border.

Anybody in the world who has paid even the slightest bit of attention to Israeli-Gaza relations over the past few months and years knows that the only immediate way to stop the slaughter in Gaza and crude rockets from falling into Israel’s south is not by violence, but through a cease-fire agreement. [1]
High ranking Israeli officials have few illusions about overthrowing Hamas’ rule in the Gaza Strip—an implausible feat–which would require a massive and permanent Israeli military redeployment in Gaza. [2] Furthermore, no evidence exists suggesting that Israeli military violence is in any way effective in curbing Gaza-based rocket fire. [3]
Specifically with these elementary and uncontroversial facts in mind, let us briefly explore the origins and causes of this past week’s failures in the attempts to bring about the only realistic immediate solution—a cease-fire agreement–to halting the violence in Israel-Palestine.
On December 29th, three days into Israel’s air strikes on Gaza and several hundred Palestinians dead or wounded, Hamas advisor to Prime Minister Haniyeh, Ahmed Yusuf told NPR’s Robert Siegel that Hamas was “willing to keep the cease-fire, and…willing to extend it to another six months” pending an Israeli commitment to comply with international law by halting its aggression in Gaza and ending its illegal siege of Gaza’s 1.5 million residents. [4]
Israel responded to Hamas’ offer the next day by continuing to bomb mosques and other civilian centers, in one instance resulting in the murder of five sisters as they slept in their beds, ranging in age from four to seventeen. [5] Meanwhile Israel’s interior minister shot down the prospect of a cease-fire agreement by announcing that “there is no room for a cease-fire” with Hamas. [6]

Medics say 660 Palestinians, including 215 children and 98 women, have been killed in the Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip. Gaza emergency services chief, Moawiya Hassanein, also said on Tuesday that more than 2,950 Gazans have been wounded during Israeli attacks on the impoverished region. The toll includes 43 civilians who were killed and 100 wounded when Israelis struck a school in Jabaliya, northern Gaza, he added. Earlier in the day, Israeli forces hit two UN-run schools, one of which was crowded with refugees, in the Gaza Strip. Israel launched a massive military campaign on Gaza, one of the most densely-populated areas in the world on December 27. From Damascus — While Americans may believe that the current violence in Gaza began Dec. 27, in fact Palestinians have been dying from bombardments for many weeks. On Nov. 4, when the Israeli-Palestinian truce was still in effect but global attention was turned to the U.S. elections, Israel launched a “preemptive” airstrike on Gaza, alleging intelligence about an imminent operation to capture Israeli soldiers; more assaults took place throughout the month.
The truce thus shattered, any incentive by Palestinian leaders to enforce the moratorium on rocket fire was gone. Any extension of the agreement or improvement of its implementation at that point would have required Israel to engage Hamas, to agree to additional trust-building measures and negotiation with our movement — a political impossibility for Israel, with its own elections only weeks away.

Three Israeli soldiers were also killed late Monday on the outskirts of the Jabaliya refugee camp, north of Gaza City, when an Israeli tank shell erroneously struck a house in which they were taking cover from Palestinian militants firing mortar shells against them. John Ging, director of operations in Gaza for UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said the death toll in the Israeli artillery strike near the school in Jabalya refugee camp was 30 dead with another 55 people injured.
Medical officials on the spot have said more than 40 people were killed.
Ging told reporters at U.N. headquarters by videolink from Gaza that three artillery shells landed at the perimeter of the school where 350 people were taking shelter.
He said UNRWA regularly provided the Israeli army with exact geographical coordinates of its facilities and the school was in a built-up area. “Of course it was entirely inevitable if artillery shells landed in that area there would be a high number of casualties,” he said.
Casualty numbers were still being assessed but the latest figures were 30 dead and 55 injured, including at least five critically, Ging said.

For 18 months my people in Gaza have been under siege, incarcerated inside the world’s biggest prison, sealed off from land, air and sea, caged and starved, denied even medication for our sick. After the slow death policy came the bombardment. In this most densely populated of places, nothing has been spared Israel’s warplanes, from government buildings to homes, mosques, hospitals, schools and markets. More than 540 have been killed and thousands permanently maimed. A third are women and children. Whole families have been massacred, some while they slept.
This river of blood is being shed under lies and false pretexts. For six months we in Hamas observed the ceasefire. Israel broke it repeatedly from the start. Israel was required to open crossings to Gaza, and extend the truce to the West Bank. It proceeded to tighten its deadly siege of Gaza, repeatedly cutting electricity and water supplies. The collective punishment did not halt, but accelerated – as did the assassinations and killings. Thirty Gazans were killed by Israeli fire and hundreds of patients died as a direct effect of the siege during the so-called ceasefire. Israel enjoyed a period of calm. Our people did not.
