It condemns Hamas and the people of Gaza as terrorists but has no mention of the decades long Israeli occupation and strangulation of the West Bank and Gaza, or the bloody terrorism of tens of thousands of Palestinian men, women and children who have been killed, maimed, tortured or made homeless by years of Israel’s terrorism.

The regime could never have maintained its illegal occupation of Palestine, or imposed a barbaric blockade on tiny Gaza, or mounted this latest bloodthirsty assault on civil society, were it not for the protection of an over-powerful ‘friends’ network in every major western country. In Britain the ‘Friends of Israel’ organisation, in its various guises, has stooges occupying key positions at the heart of government. These individuals paralyse any effective action against the lawless regime they subscribe to. They ought to be treated as agents of a foreign military power and weeded out, especially with the European elections coming up and a general election just around the corner.

I know from personal involvement that the devastating invasion of Gaza by Israel could easily have been avoided.

After visiting Sderot last April and seeing the serious psychological damage caused by the rockets that had fallen in that area, my wife, Rosalynn, and I declared their launching from Gaza to be inexcusable and an act of terrorism. Although casualties were rare (three deaths in seven years), the town was traumatized by the unpredictable explosions. About 3,000 residents had moved to other communities, and the streets, playgrounds and shopping centers were almost empty. Mayor Eli Moyal assembled a group of citizens in his office to meet us and complained that the government of Israel was not stopping the rockets, either through diplomacy or military action.

Knowing that we would soon be seeing Hamas leaders from Gaza and also in Damascus, we promised to assess prospects for a cease-fire. From Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, who was negotiating between the Israelis and Hamas, we learned that there was a fundamental difference between the two sides. Hamas wanted a comprehensive cease-fire in both the West Bank and Gaza, and the Israelis refused to discuss anything other than Gaza.

We knew that the 1.5 million inhabitants of Gaza were being starved, as the U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food had found that acute malnutrition in Gaza was on the same scale as in the poorest nations in the southern Sahara, with more than half of all Palestinian families eating only one meal a day.

Monday January 12, 2009 Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza continued to target Israeli areas on Monday with homemade shells in response to the ongoing military attacks on Gaza. The al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced that its fighters managed to fire at least one Grad Missile at an Israeli military site near the Gaza border, adding that another group of its fighter targeted Israeli tanks in Gaza city with a homemade roadside bomb. Meanwhile, Fatah fighters and leftist groups reported that they fired at least five homemade shells at areas in northern Israel on Sunday night and Monday morning. All groups said that the attacks will continue as long as Israel proceeds with its military operation on the Gaza Strip, which entered its 17th day on Monday. So far, the Israeli Army has killed 905 Palestinian during its ongoing offensive. Israeli Army sources told the Israeli online daily Haaretz that the ability of Hamas and other Palestinian groups to fire homemade shells toward Israel have dropped by 50 percent since the Israeli offensive began over two weeks ago. Palestinian resistance fire has killed 13 Israelis since the offensive started; 10 of which are soldiers.

When Dov Weisglass, an adviser to the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, talked of putting Gazans “on a diet” and the deputy defence minister, Matan Vilnai, talked about the Palestinians experiencing “a bigger shoah” (holocaust), this reminds us of Governor General Hans Frank in Nazi-occupied Poland, who spoke of “death by hunger”.

The real reason for the attack on Gaza is that Israel is only willing to deal with Palestinian quislings.

The main crime of Hamas is not terrorism but its refusal to accept becoming a pawn in the hands of the Israeli occupation regime in Palestine.

The decision last month by the EU council to upgrade relations with Israel, without any specific conditions on human rights, has encouraged further Israeli aggression.

The time for appeasing Israel is long past. As a first step, Britain must withdraw the British ambassador to Israel and, as with apartheid South Africa, embark on a programme of boycott, divestment and sanctions.

Israeli Artillery intensified the shelling scale leaving more victims and destruction.
