Calls for boycott of Israel at Dublin protest

ÉANNA Ó CAOLLAÍAn estimated six hundred people participated in a demonstration against the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip which has cost over 1,200 lives since the violence started in December.

Artist Robert Ballagh addressed the crowd which assembled at the Central Bank at lunchtime. The demonstration, which was organised by the Irish anti-war movement, heard calls for an economic, political and cultural boycott of Israel.

The demonstration then marched up O’Connell St to Parnell St before returning to protest against shops stocking Israeli goods in Jervis St Shopping Centre.

Enough. It’s time for a boycott

Enough. It’s time for a boycott

The best way to end the bloody occupation is to target Israel with the kind of movement that ended apartheid in South Africa

The Guardian,

Saturday 10 January 2009

It’s time. Long past time. The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa. In July 2005 a huge coalition of Palestinian groups laid out plans to do just that. They called on “people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era”. The campaign Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions was born.

Every day that Israel pounds Gaza brings more converts to the BDS cause – even among Israeli Jews. In the midst of the assault roughly 500 Israelis, dozens of them well-known artists and scholars, sent a letter to foreign ambassadors in Israel. It calls for “the adoption of immediate restrictive measures and sanctions” and draws a clear parallel with the anti-apartheid struggle. “The boycott on South Africa was effective, but Israel is handled with kid gloves … This international backing must stop.”

Gaza assault spurs calls for boycott

By Robert Chesal

13-01-2009

This past weekend, a text message forwarded to large number of Muslims in the Dutch immigrant communities called for a boycott of two German supermarket chains, Aldi and Lidl. Internet sites worldwide have begun urging consumers not to buy US brands. Others are spreading conspiracy theories involving bar codes and hidden Israeli flags. These are the latest expressions of worldwide anger over the Israeli war on Gaza.

Aldi & Lidl logosInternet forums and text messages are new weapons in a worldwide protest movement that has been gathering steam in Europe with mass demonstrations in Paris, Madrid and other cities. Last Saturday, Muslims in Europe and the Middle East received mobile text messages calling on them to boycott American brands like McDonalds, Pepsi, Kentucky Fried Chicken, as well as Aldi and Lidl, two German supermarket chains popular among North African immigrants in Europe.

One text message circulating in the Netherlands claimed that Aldi and Lidl would “donate part of their profits to Israel.” The chain message was begun by a group of activists and quickly spread through the Moroccan community The two companies quickly denied the rumour in the hope of limiting losses. It is not known whether many customers heeded the call, but American coffee chain Starbucks admitted the boycott had already caused “a downturn” in business.

A prominent member of Sweden’s largest political party likened Israel to apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany in calling for a boycott of Sweden’s upcoming Davis Cup tennis match against the Middle Eastern country.

“Israel is an apartheid state. I think Gaza is comparable to the Warsaw ghetto,” said Ingalill Bjartén, the vice chair for the Social Democratic women’s organization (S-kvinnor) in Skåne in southern Sweden, to the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

World Protests Gaza Slaughter, Boycott Israel Movement Grows

(Your Tax Dollars at Work in the Middle East)

As the civilian death toll in Gaza rises and Israel snubs international calls for a ceasefire, worldwide anger has sparked large protests as well as renewed calls for a global boycott against Israel. In London, at least 20,000 and as many as 100,000 people demonstrated Saturday outside the Israeli embassy while leading British Jews issued a call on Israel to halt alled the “horror” in Gaza. Some 30,000 demonstrators marched in Paris against Israel’s war on Gaza while another 90,000 joined protests in other cities throughout France (AFP). Demonstrations in other European cities, including Dublin, Berlin, Athens, Rome, and Amsterdam also drew tens of thousands (DW). In the United States, large demonstrations against the Israeli slaughter of innocent civilians in Gaza were staged on Saturday in cities including New York, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Israeli peace activists protested also in Tel Aviv, a signal to the world that opposition to the killing in Gaza is widespread even within Israel (Haaretz, Al-Jazeera). Friday and Saturday also saw large protests against Israeli actions in cities across the Muslim world including Algiers, Alexandria, Ramallah, Baghdad, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur (AFP). Meanwhile, there are renewed calls for a global boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel from groups such as the Global BDS Movement, while Canadian journalist Naomi Klein writes: “The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa.” Some are also calling for a boycott of US exports for its continuing support of Israel.

Has the world finally had enough?

Italian traders’ body calls for boycott of Jewish businesses

ROME: An Italian traders’ body has created a storm by calling for a boycott of Jewish-run businesses in Rome to protest Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, La Repubblica newspaper reported yesterday.

The small and autonomous Flaica-Uniti-Cub grouping Rome traders issued the call on its website, saying “do not buy anything from businesses run by the Jewish community as a sign of protest,” the daily said.

“We cannot remain silent about what is happening in Gaza. We had thought of drawing up a list of businessmen who have links with Tel Aviv because people do not know who they are,” said Giancarlo Desiderati, the brain behind the initiative.

The head of the Jewish community in Rome, Riccardo Pacifici, said he would file a suit against the organisation for “inciting racial hatred”.

The move has been condemned by the centre-right president of the Italian Senate Renato Schifani and Rome’s far-right mayor Gianni Alemanno, who branded it “mad and criminal”.

Israel launched its war against Hamas on December 27 aiming to end rocket attacks in southern Israel and the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip from Egypt.

Palestinian medics say almost 800 people have been killed since then.

Farmers claim UK, Jordan boycotting Israeli fruit

Fruit growers disappointed by canceled orders from abroad, leaving produce to rot in warehouses

Yair Hason

Published: 01.16.09, 07:37 / Israel Money
Fruit growers in Israel have reported delays and reductions in orders from abroad since the military operation in Gaza was launched, due to various boycotts against Israeli produce.

Farmers say much of their produce is being held in warehouses due to canceled orders, and fear a sharp decrease in fruit exports to countries such as Jordan, Britain, and the Scandinavian countries.

“We export persimmons, and because of the fighting a number of countries and distributors are canceling orders,” Giora Almagor, of the southern town of Bitzaron, told Ynet. He said some of the produce had already been shipped while some was awaiting shipment in warehouses.

Almagor said a large number of cancellations came from Jordan. “The produce stays packed in warehouses, and this is causing us massive losses,” he said.

Time for Israel to be put on trial

The brutal and indiscriminate Israeli attacks on the Palestinian population in Gaza during the last weeks have entailed numerous violations of basic norms of international law, such as the principles of proportionality and distinction (between civilians and combatants; and between civilian and military targets). Military acts such as intentionally targeting schools and other civilian facilities are considered violations of international humanitarian law in relation to which the state of Israel bears responsibility — but they also constitute serious crimes under international law (e.g., war crimes and eventually crimes against humanity) in relation to which individuals should stand trial.

Who Is Responsible for Gaza blight?

Who Is Responsible for Gaza blight?

By Dr. Akram Habeeb, Writing from the Occupied Gaza Strip

Jan 17, 2009

As a Gazzan who is not affiliated to any political party; yet much concerned about what is taking place in my hometown, I meticulously track every piece of news related to the ongoing horrendous carnage which is perpetrated by the Israelis against the innocent civilians in Gaza. I was shocked when key staff of Bush’s outgoing Administration hold the Palestinian side in particular responsible for the recent onslaught in Gaza. I was also more devastated when some European officials and even few Arab leaders implicitly hold the same
opinion. I am not sure though whether these officials do represent the voice and the good will of their peoples.

The most disturbing statement about the situation in Gaza was made by Dr. Rice, the American Secretary of States, when she declared that it was the Palestinian side who violated the truce and subsequently is responsible for what is happening in Gaza. Such a statement is easy to be made by Ms. Condi whose accomplishments in America’s foreign policy were spectacular! She promised that by 2008 the presidents vision of two states would be concretized. It seems though that she succeeded in having two Palestinian cantons, one in Gaza, and the other in the West Bank ! Perhaps Dr. Rice was the most frequent visitor of the Middle East when compared with her predecessors. The normal expectation has been that Ms. Rice would have a deeper understanding of the Middle East crisis in general, and the Palestinian side in particular.

Hamas hits Israeli towns, Special Forces

Hamas hits Israeli towns, Special Forces

Sat, 17 Jan 2009 10:37:07 GMT

Palestinian Grad missiles hit three Israeli towns as Hamas fighters fire mortars at Israeli Special Forces stationed in Northern Gaza.

The Israeli settlements of Ofakim, Hatsarim, and Netivot have been targeted by Grad-type missiles, Arab, and Israeli news channels reported on Saturday.

Western Negev has been hit by five Palestinian missiles, reports added.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Al-Aqsa TV reported that Al-Qassam fighters of the military wing of Hamas had fired eight mortars at Israeli Special Forces stationed at the Palestinian al-Shati refugee camp in Northern Gaza Strip.

Ongoing Palestinian rocket attacks into Israel and continuing Hamas resistance has cast doubt on whether Tel Aviv can achieve its proclaimed goals with the deadly military operation it has launched in Gaza.

At onset of the attacks against the coastal strip, Tel Aviv said that stopping rocket fire into Israel was one of its primary goals.

Later on, it added toppling the democratically elected Palestinian government of Hamas to that list, despite backtracking on it as Operation Cast Lead unfolded.

In the past three weeks of violence, Israel has killed almost 1200 Palestinians and injured more than 5300 many of whom are civilians.

The Israeli army has attracted international condemnation by targeting mosques, schools, UN-run shelters, hospitals, journalists, and aid workers. The UN Security Council, however, has issued no binding resolution for immediate ceasefire.
