February 23, 2009 — – Propelling prisoners’ heads into concrete walls by means of towels wrapped around their necks, savage beatings with fists and rifles that left prisoners crippled, hanging prisoners by the arms with their arms strung up behind them, depriving prisoners of sleep for weeks on end, which has been thought the worst torture possible for 500 years, causing prisoners to freeze — sometimes to death, and waterboarding are but a partial list of the torture methods ordered by America’s highest officials. In the “Preliminary Memorandum of the Justice Robert H. Jackson Conference on Federal Prosecutions of War Criminals,” law school Dean Lawrence Velvel, the founder of the Jackson Conference, details the full spectrum of tortures performed in wholesale combinations — not one torture by itself — on detainees around the world. His Preliminary Memorandum is a precursor to a formal legal complaint to be filed with the Justice Department this spring.

The Preliminary Memorandum identifies 31 culprits and details the war crimes they committed, the laws they broke, and the many fulsome warnings they received regarding their actions from numerous governmental lawyers and officials high and low, including the Judge Advocate Generals of all the armed services. The culprits who should be prosecuted include Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, Addington, Tenet, Bybee, Yoo, Haynes, Chertoff and others.

Former British resident Binyam Mohamed arrives back in Britain tomorrow after his release from Guantanamo Bay. British and US lawyers claim that sustained beatings – which have only recently stopped – have left him with severe psychological and physical problems. Defence correspondent Mark Townsend reports

Binyam Mohamed will return to Britain suffering from a huge range of injuries after being beaten by US guards right up to the point of his departure from Guantánamo Bay, according to the first detailed accounts of his treatment inside the camp.

Mohamed will arrive back tomorrow in the UK, where he was a British resident between 1984 and 2002. During medical examinations last week, doctors discovered injuries and ailments resulting from apparently brutal treatment in detention.

Mohamed was found to be suffering from bruising, organ damage, stomach complaints, malnutrition, sores to feet and hands, severe damage to ligaments as well as profound emotional and psychological problems which have been exacerbated by the refusal of Guantánamo’s guards to give him counselling.

Air America conducted a poll that asked a question raised by Time Magazine’s Joe Klein: “Should Obama pardon George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney?” The idea: a pardon would brand them for crimes without the agony of a trial.

Air American’s aren’t buying the Klein solution. They want the whole lot thrown in jail. No trial necessary! A whopping 90% of our 9000 respondents want to see Bush and Company pay for their crimes with either hard time in the pokey or hard time in the pokey after enhanced interrogation techniques. (Shocking!)

In an interview last year with Philadelphia Daily News reporter Will Bunch, Barack Obama said something that seemed to signal the presidential hopeful might prosecute George W. Bush and his staff for crimes committed during the eight-year death march also known as the 43rd presidency of the United States of America.

White phosphorus bombs used by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip were produced and supplied by American arms manufacturers, according to an Amnesty International report that called for a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel.

The report documented dozens of weapons used by Israel and Hamas during the three-week offensive, concluding that both groups had carried out attacks on civilians constituting war crimes punishable by international law. The UN Security Council should impose an embargo until a mechanism was established to ensure that military equipment was not used to carry out such violations, said Amnesty.

Gaza City – An Arab League delegation is in Gaza to document alleged Israeli war crimes committed during its three-week offensive in the territory.

Sunday’s delegation is made up of international legal and forensic experts. They will present their findings to the Arab League’s chief, Amr Moussa.

The Arab League, and its 22 member states, could then attempt to pursue war crimes charges in countries that allow such lawsuits to be presented.

Critics accuse Israel of using disproportionate force and failing to protect civilians during its three-week offensive, which ended on January 18.

Israel launched its assault to halt years of Gaza militant rocket fire toward southern Israel.

Representatives of Gaza’s ruling Hamas movement welcomed the delegation at the Rafah border crossing.

‘Maps of the Gaza Strip were prepared through the Google Earth for the Israeli military during the Gaza War’.

Hamas accuses the Palestinian Authority of providing Tel Aviv with a map of the locations targeted by the Israeli army during the Gaza War.

“With the help of Google Earth program, those groups prepared maps to local mosques, institutions, tunnels or workshops,” said Abu Abdallah, a senior Hamas intelligence officer.

The intelligence allegedly included the location of weapon caches, mosques, and tunnels at the Rafah border.

The movement also said Ramallah provided Israel with the blueprints of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyah’s home, according to AFP.

“This information was sent to Ramallah then transmitted to the enemy which hit targets on the basis of this information collected before and during the war,” said Ihab al-Ghossein, a spokesman for Hamas’ Interior Ministry.

“Officers and members of the Ramallah security services in (the West Bank city of) Ramallah tasked their agents with tracking the movements of the resistance in Gaza,” Ghossein, said.

Feb 23, 2009 Can it be true? This week in the High Court in London, lawyers acting for an independent Palestinian organization will start proceedings against the British government. They seek a judicial review of policy decisions that have brought the UK’s relations with Israel into conflict with international law. “The UK has clear international law obligations to do something effective to stop Israel’s attacks on Palestinian civilians,” says Phil Shiner who leads the case. It must cooperate with other states using all lawful means to bring the situation to an end and it must stop giving aid and assistance to Israel. This means that the UK’s continuing policy of arms trading with Israel is completely out of bounds, as is our role in continuing with the EU preferential trading agreement. The point of this case is to make the government focus on what it is legally obliged to do, beyond ineffective hand-wringing. At the same time an adviser to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has written to US President Barack Obama asking him to “treat Palestinians fairly and be open-minded in dealing with Hamas”.

Feb 23, 2009 Bethlehem – Ma’an/Agencies – Four shoes were thrown at an Israeli army spokesperson on Sunday night in Amsterdam, according to a Dutch news agency. Three members of the country’s International Socialists (IS) threw four shoes at Israeli army spokesperson Ron Edelheit, who was speaking at the city’s Apollo Hotel on Sunday. About 50 protestors demonstrated against the event outside the hotel, the IS announced. The shoe-throwers, students from Groningen and Leiden, have been arrested, according to the Nieuws Uit Amsterdam news agency. The lecture was scheduled to take place at another hotel, the College Hotel, but the event was cancelled in response to protest emails and telephone calls. The Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel said the cancellation was the result of threats, but the ANP news agency said police were not aware of threats. Organizers of the meeting told another news agency that they stand “shocked that these anti-Israel groups want to muffle free speech in the Netherlands in this way.”

BAGHDAD (AP) — Three U.S. soldiers and an interpreter were killed Monday during fighting north of Baghdad, the military announced.

The combat took place in Diyala province, an area northeast of Baghdad that remains volatile despite an overall drop in violence nationwide.

The statement did not provide more details.

The attack came two weeks after a suicide car bomber struck a U.S. patrol in the northern city of Mosul, killing four American soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter in the deadliest single attack against U.S. forces in nine months.

At least 4,250 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

NAIROBI – A suicide car-bomb attack against African Union peacekeepers in Somalia yesterday killed 11 Burundi soldiers and wounded 15 others, the deadliest attack against AU troops since their deployment two years ago.

Insurgents from Al-Shabab militia, which claims links to Al Qaeda, took responsibility and vowed to continue assaults against AU soldiers who have been helping shore up Somalia’s transitional government.

“Go home, otherwise you will meet our hell,” said Al-Shabab leader Muktar Robow, speaking by telephone to reporters after the attack.
