President Obama has presented the most irresponsible budget in US history. His fiscal year 2010 budget projects federal spending of $3.5 trillion and a federal deficit of $1.75 trillion. In other words, 50 percent of the government’s budget consists of red ink.

And Americans are angry that sub-prime borrowers took mortgages they couldn’t afford.

The bald fact is that the US government is going to have to borrow–or print–half of the money it intends to spend in Obama’s first budget. This fact has fallen through the cracks as New York Times headlines proclaim “A Bold Plan Sweeps Away Reagan Ideas.” It certainly does sweep away Reagan ideas. No Reagan budget ever presumed that the federal government could borrow half of its annual expenditures. Indeed, Obama’s budget deficit for 2010 alone exceeds the totality of “Reagan Deficits” for Reagan’s two terms of office.

3 March 2009 In testimony given in December to a US human rights organization, former Army Spc. Brandon Neely, previously a guard at Guantánamo, detailed the torture and abuse that he witnessed or personally participated in at the notorious US military prison. Neely’s account makes clear that the inhuman abuse he saw was an integral and tacitly accepted part of the day-to-day routine at the prison. The testimony stands as yet another indictment of the entire US political and military leadership responsible for the camp’s establishment and continued operations.

March 3, 2009 I’ve just published the first definitive list of the 779 prisoners held in the US prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, which is available in four parts. Click on the following links for Part 1 (ISNs 002 to 200), Part 2 (ISNs 201 to 496), Part 3 (ISNs 497 to 732) and Part 4 (ISNs 743 to 10030). The list is the result of three years’ research and writing about Guantánamo, which began with my book The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison (published by Pluto Press), and has continued with over 300 articles about Guantánamo for a variety of publications. The list provides details of the 533 prisoners who have been released, and includes, for the first time ever, accurate dates for their release. It also provides details of the 241 prisoners who are still held, including the 59 prisoners who have been cleared for release. Although some stories are still unknown, the stories of 700 prisoners are referenced either by links to my extensive archive of articles about Guantánamo, or to the chapters in The Guantánamo Files where they can be found. As I explain in the introduction to the list: “It is my hope that this project will provide an invaluable research tool for those seeking to understand how it came to pass that the government of the United States turned its back on domestic and international law, establishing torture as official US policy, and holding men without charge or trial neither as prisoners of war, protected by the Geneva Conventions, nor as criminal suspects to be put forward for trial in a federal court, but as ‘illegal enemy combatants.’

Both Israel and India aspire to become unchallenged military powers of Middle East and South Asia respectively. The USA provides the requisite backup support to accomplish their ambitions. In order to retain their regional ascendancy both have paid particular attention towards modernising conventional and unconventional military means far outmatching their neighbours. Apart from building their military power it becomes necessary for the duo to ensure that none of its neighbours acquires any weapon system superior to its own or is in a position to flex muscles or unite to pose a credible challenge.

Above all, they over ensure that no Muslim country can possess nuclear capability and be in a position to avert blackmailing and bullying tactics. In other words, both desire weak and subservient states doing their bidding. Nuclear capability with any country is a death knell for their megalomaniac aspirations and hence a binding necessity to prevent its acquisition.

Israeli occupation soldiers fired machine gun rounds on Tuesday at the main road linking the southern Lebanese border villages of Adeisseh and Kfar Killa.

An Israeli soldier patrolling the border with Lebanon opened fire on Tuesday at a mural painted on a wall at the entrance to a Lebanese village, the Lebanese army said.

“A soldier got out of his vehicle and deliberately fired at the wall bearing the inscriptions,” an army spokesman said, explaining that five bullets had hit the wall in the village of Aadaisseh, some 20 meters (yards) from the border.

An Israeli army spokeswoman claimed that “a soldier mistakenly fired his rifle” and that the military was “investigating the incident in order to prevent similar events in the future.”

A statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) qualified the incident as “serious” and said a probe was underway. “This is a serious incident and a violation of Security Council Resolution 1701,” the statement said, referring to the UN resolution that ended the 2006 Israeli war against Lebanon. “UNIFIL has protested to the Israelis,” it added. The statement said at least two shots hit the wall.

Following Tuesday’s incident, Lebanese and UNIFIL troops stepped up their presence in the area.

Meanwhile, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has confirmed that Hezbollah was not involved in recent rocket-launchings from South Lebanon into northern Israel. Speaking to the press on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York, Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Alain Le Roy confirmed that, based on UNIFIL investigations, Hezbollah had nothing to do with the rocket-launching incidents from South Lebanon into northern Israel over the past few months.
