The reasons given by the U.S. for the invasion were fairy tales, but the results were anything but the usual happy ending of fictitious fables. The lead-up to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq was laden with lies, deceit, bribes, attempted bribes and so many ludicrous incidents that a fiction writer would be envious of the plot. Unfortunately, the scenario was real and deadly.

Iraq War Began Six Years Ago Today

(Washington, DC) — It was on this day six years ago that President George W. Bush announced the United States was at war with Iraq.

The President spoke for four minutes in a nationally broadcast address telling the world the effort was underway to, quote, “disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger.” He told the men and women in the U.S. armed forces “the peace of a troubled world and the hopes of an oppressed people now depend on you.” In his address Bush said no outcome but victory would be accepted.

The war that most Americans thought would be over within months has now cost the lives of more than 42-hundred U.S. troops and more than 600-billion dollars in treasure.

President Obama says he’ll keep at least 50-thousand troops in Iraq beyond 2010.

More than 130-thousand American men and women are there today.

March 19, 2009 Haaretz is publishing what so far appears to be a damaging testimonial of Israel’s brutish conduct in the Gaza invasion a few months ago. Israeli fighters quoted in the first article featured soldiers who spoke of the IDF’s moral lapses, from the deliberate killing of civilians to the official allowance of trashing the homes they requisitioned — including the ritual of leaving “Death to Arabs” graffiti on their walls. These stories, if anything, demonstrate the certain need for a war crimes investigation and the sincere willingness to prosecute them. Otherwise, the blatant disregard for human life exhibited by the Israeli military will only continue to exacerbate. If anything, prosecution will compel Israeli soldiers to stop thinking they can murder at will under the guise of “following orders.”

Security personnel stand guard at the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. Although Rafah is the only border crossing not controlled by Israel, Cairo has to some extent helped the imposition of the blockade.

Israel vows to continue its imposition of collective punishment on the 1.5 million residents of Gaza until its captive soldier is released.

The Israeli threat came after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he had “been generous” and had agreed to release 320 of the 450 Palestinians that Hamas wants freed in exchange for captive soldier Gilad Shalit.

“Hamas’ demands reached such proportions that in our assessment no Israeli government could accept,” Israeli Justice Minister Daniel Friedman told reporters after Olmert met behind closed doors with his cabinet on Tuesday.

According to Olmert, from a wider truce to allowing reconstruction aid into the strip all depend on whether Hamas gives in to the prisoner swap demands.

“The crossings … are operating at a minimum to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” an Israeli political source said. “And they (the crossings) will remain so until Gilad Shalit is released.”

Considered the lifeline for the territory, the crossings into Gaza have been sealed on Israeli orders, allowing less than the bare necessities of life to reach the Gazans — who fight death on a daily basis due to the ongoing 20-month blockade.

March 19, 2009 Nablus – Ma’an – Israeli forces conducted sweeping raids across the West Bank targeting Hamas leaders and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council in a seeming attempt to push forward negotiations over the release of captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. High-ranking Hamas sources said Israeli forces stormed the houses of Hamas leaders in Nablus, Ramallah, Hebron and Bethlehem early on Thursday.

Israel frequently claims to possess the most moral army in the world

An Israeli military college has printed damning soldiers’ accounts of the killing of civilians and vandalism during recent operations in Gaza.

One account tells of a sniper killing a mother and children at close range whom troops had told to leave their home.

Another speaker at the seminar described what he saw as the “cold blooded murder” of a Palestinian woman.

The army has defended its conduct during the Gaza offensive but said it would investigate the testimonies.

The Israeli army has said it will investigate the soldiers’ accounts.

The testimonies were published by the military academy at Oranim College. Graduates of the academy, who had served in Gaza, were speaking to new recruits at a seminar.
