(Google) CAIRO — In an unprecedented move by a Western Christian leader, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has praised British Muslims for bringing back religion and ethics into public life.“I think Islam has made a very significant contribution to getting a debate about religion into public life,” Williams, the leader of the Anglican Church, told the Muslim News. “And I think it’s very right that we should have these debates and discussions between Muslims and Christians and others in public.” Britain is home to more than two million Muslims. This is the first time a Western Christian leader thanks Muslims for bringing back religion to a secular Western society. Last November, Head of Vatican’s Department for Interfaith Contacts Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran praised Muslims for bringing religion back into the public life in Europe. Williams, the leader of the Anglican Church, lamented the unfriendly atmosphere for faith in British society. “If we are not allowed as religious people to talk and argue about these issues in public then I think society has become a rather unfriendly place for religious people and that’s not helpful change.” Williams, criticized the West’s Christian leaders for failing to bring their societies away for the devastating and dominating materialism. “(They were unable to) turn around our society which was being driven by materialism,” he said. “(I hope) to see leaders listening specifically to the more ethical challenges that faith brings.”

LONDON – A Spanish court has taken the first steps toward opening a criminal investigation into allegations that six former high-level Bush administration officials violated international law by providing the legal framework to justify the torture of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, an official close to the case said.

The case, against former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and others, was sent to the prosecutor’s office for review by Baltasar Garzón, the crusading investigative judge who ordered the arrest of the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. The official said that it was “highly probable” that the case would go forward and that it could lead to arrest warrants.

Alberto Gonzales is accused of devising the legal foundation for interrogation techniques like waterboarding.

A Spanish court has agreed to open a criminal case against six former Bush administration officials over allegations of supporting torture.

Gonzalo Boye, a Madrid lawyer who filed the complaint, told the AP on Saturday that human rights lawyers brought the case before leading anti-terror judge Baltasar Garzon.

Garzon who is famous for ordering the arrest of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1998 has accepted the case and sent it to the prosecutor’s office for review.

The former US officials including then attorney general Alberto Gonzales are accused of giving legal cover for interrogation methods like waterboarding against prisoners at Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba.

Boye said that the six Americans cited had had well-documented roles in approving illegal interrogation techniques, redefining torture and abandoning the definition set by the 1984 Torture Convention.

The other officials named are former undersecretary of defense for policy Douglas Feith, former vice president Dick Cheney’s chief of staff David Addington, Justice Department officials John Yoo and Jay S. Bybee, and Pentagon lawyer William Haynes.

A Brazilian archbishop has suggested that Catholics and gypsies had been more intensely victimized than Jews during the Second World War.

“The Jews talk about six million people killed. But how many Catholics were victims of the Holocaust? They were 22 million in all,” Archbishop Dadeus Grings, from Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, told advertising magazine Press & Advertising.

The archbishop also contended that while “Jews say they were the main victims of the Holocaust, the biggest victims were the gypsies, because they were exterminated.”

In February, another catholic bishop had denied the Holocaust.

Bishop Richard Williamson was at the center of a raging controversy when he said that the Nazis did not use gas chambers to kill Jews during World War II.

Argentinean government ordered the expulsion of the British bishop after he made the statement.

In several countries, including, France, Germany and Austria, ‘Holocaust denial’ is against the law, and ‘deniers’ have been punished with prison.

March 28, 2009 Dozens of fighters have fired rockets at a transport terminal in northwest Pakistan used to ship supplies to Nato soldiers in neighbouring Afghanistan, police have said. At least 12 shipping containers were damaged in the attack early on Saturday at the Farhad terminal in Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province, Zahur Khan, a local police official, said. Police opened fire at the fighters but they managed to flee, he said. Afghan-based US and Nato forces get up to 75 per cent of their supplies via routes that pass through Pakistan’s Khyber tribal region and a southwestern Chaman border crossing – areas where Taliban fighters are believed to be operating.
