Financial crisis, not armed terrorists, greatest threat to U.S. security

The current international financial disaster brought on by Wall Street has created 25 million unemployed around the globe. People everywhere are mad as hell at both their leaders and America.

U.S. intelligence says this financial crisis, not al-Qaida, is the greatest threat to national security.

Politicians from leading industrial nations sought safety in numbers at the G20 summit in London this week attempting to show they are resolving the worst economic crisis since 1930.

President Barack Obama was a huge hit. He urged Europe and Asia to join the U.S. in spending more billions to stimulate their battered economies.

The U.S. government and Federal Reserve have already spent, guaranteed, or lent $12.8 trillion, an amount equal to 90% of total U.S. 2008 economic output.

Leaked ICRC report claims medical staff monitored terror suspects during waterboarding

Medical personnel committed a “gross breach of medical ethics” by taking part in torture in Guantánamo, a leaked International Committee of the Red Cross document has revealed.

The 40-page confidential report, written in 2007, describes how medical staff working for the CIA monitored prisoners’ vital signs to make sure they did not drown while being subjected to waterboarding, during which water is poured over a cloth placed over a person’s nose and mouth.

Medical personnel were also said to be present when prisoners were shackled in a “stress standing position”. The detainees were “monitored by health personnel who in some instances recommended stopping the method of ill-treatment, or recommended its continuation, but with adjustments”, according to the report.

The Red Cross concluded: “The alleged participation of health personnel in the interrogation process and, either directly or indirectly, in the infliction of ill-treatment constituted a gross breach of medical ethics and, in some cases, amounted to participation in torture and/or cruel inhuman or degrading treatment.”

Bus driver suspended for harassing Muslim couple

A Metro Transit bus driver has been suspended for harassing a Muslim couple three weeks ago.

Witnesseses said the driver refused to allow a Muslim woman and her husband onto a Metro Transit bus because the woman was wearing a headscarf that concealed her face.

After news reports prompted outrage from the public and Muslim groups, Metro Transit suspended the driver with pay while an investigation was on going.

The investigation is now complete and the driver is suspended. But Metro Transit wouldn’t release any more information.

“We don’t discuss the specifics of our disciplinary actions. However, I can say that investigation was conducted and concluded and the operator is currently off,” said Metro Transit spokesperson Lori Patterson.

Patterson wouldn’t say if the suspension was paid or unpaid. Metro Transit is still investigating another incident involving a driver stopping his bus to club a fake seal in front of protestors. That driver is currently on paid suspension.

The Israeli military attacked civilians and medics and delayed – sometimes for hours – the evacuation of the injured during the January war in Gaza, according to an independent fact-finding mission commissioned by Israeli and Palestinian medical human rights groups.

Physicians for Human Rights-Israel and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society yesterday said their findings showed Israel’s military committed serious violations of international humanitarian law. In their 92-page report, compiled by five senior health experts from across the world, they documented several specific attacks, with interviews from 44 separate witnesses.

Human rights groups have accused Israel’s military, as well as Palestinian militants in Gaza, of war crimes. “The underlying meaning of the attack on the Gaza Strip, or at least its final consequence, appears to be one of creating terror without mercy to anyone,” the report said.

The Islamic Relief Organization in the Gaza Strip reported that 1346 Palestinian children lost one parent or both during the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

Mohammad Abu Darraz, head of the Child Center at the organization, reported that in most cases orphaned children lost their fathers.

Darraz stated that there are 5200 orphans in the Gaza Strip, and added that the organization received so far 500 forms asking for sponsorships for orphaned children, but the organization only managed to approve 200.

Israel is facing accusations if committing war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza as it shelled civilian areas and used White Phosphorous shells.

Numerous eyewitness accounts revealed that Israeli soldiers used civilians as human shields during the war which is a direct violation to the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Northern Ireland political leader Gerry Adams will not be allowed to enter Gaza this week because he plans to meet Hamas officials, Israel said Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Israel “would not help Adams meet with Hamas terror leaders.”

A spokesman for Adams, Ted Howell, said Adams and his delegation planned to visit Gaza on Wednesday. He said, “we will meet with whoever wants to meet us.”

Witnesses told Ma’an that three soldiers forced the youths to remove their clothes, and were verbally mocking them. The witnesses also reported long waits at the checkpoint.

Prosecutors say the incident occurred last September when, while on a military motorcade patrolling the West Bank, the medic struck a Palestinian who had been stopped for questioning with his helmet, kicked him in the abdomen and tore his shirt while the lieutenant — his direct superior — stood by and did nothing.

The officer’s attorney, Shimon Cohen, reportedly demanded his client be released from jail and provided a statement by the soldiers’ brigade commander saying the case was hurting military morale.

If telling the truth about an incident of brutalization, and prosecuting the IDF members who did this is “….hurting military morale”, one has to wonder; what does help strengthen IDF morale? Shooting unarmed pregnant Palestinian women, perhaps, with not a cell phone camera in site to document what has been done?!?

AMERICAN drone attacks on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan are causing a massive humanitarian emergency, Pakistani officials claimed after a new attack yesterday killed 13 people.

The dead and injured included foreign militants, but women and children were also killed when two missiles hit a house in the village of Data Khel, near the Afghan border, according to local officials.

As many as 1m people have fled their homes in the Tribal Areas to escape attacks by the unmanned spy planes as well as bombings by the Pakistani army. In Bajaur agency entire villages have been flattened by Pakistani troops under growing American pressure to act against Al-Qaeda militants, who have made the area their base.

KABUL (AFP)–Two soldiers in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization-led force in southern Afghanistan died in attacks while soldiers killed four militants in a raid on a bomb cell, the military said Tuesday.

The latest killings in a grinding insurgency came as the top U.S. military commander and special envoy to the region were in neighboring Pakistan for talks on efforts to quash Islamist militants.

An International Security Assistance Force soldier was killed and three wounded in a bomb strike in southern Afghanistan, ISAF said in a statement.

The 42-nation ISAF leaves the announcement of the nationalities of its casualties to their home nation.

Another ISAF soldier was killed by “indirect fire” Monday, the force said earlier, with the Dutch defense ministry confirming the death overnight.

The ministry said that a 20-year-old soldier was killed and five others were wounded in a rocket attack on their base in the southern province of Uruzgan.

Around 80 international soldiers have died in Afghanistan this year, most of them in attacks, according to icasualties.org, which monitors the wars in this country and in Iraq.

Two Australian soldiers have been wounded in Afghanistan when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, the defence department says.

The soldiers, serving with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG), were travelling in their vehicle in southern Afghanistan on Saturday when it struck an improvised explosive device.

One soldier was left with serious leg wounds and injuries to other parts of his body and was evacuated to a coalition medical facility by helicopter.

The other soldier suffered minor wounds and was later evacuated to Tarin Kowt, where he is resting before a medical assessment to decide whether he is fit to return to duty.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? The Defense Ministry says a Romanian officer has been killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Four Romanian soldiers were wounded in the explosion.

A ministry statement says Capt. Iuliu-Vasile Unguras was killed Tuesday morning when the vehicle he was in drove over an improvised bomb. The soldiers were on a patrol mission on the road from Kandahar to Kabul.

The incident happened 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of Qalat. The injured were taken to military hospitals in Lagman and Kandahar.

Unguras’s death comes days after another Romanian soldier was killed in Afghanistan. He is the he 11th Romanian to die in Afghanistan.

Romania has 956 troops in the country.

DAR ES SALAAM – A UN court trying the masterminds of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide jailed a former military chaplain for 25 years Friday for sexual assault and killing ethnic Tutsis who sought sanctuary at a seminary.

Emmanuel Rukundo is one of two clergymen the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) indicted for their role in the 100-day slaughter in which troops and Hutu militia butchered 800,000 minority Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus.

“The Trial Chamber … found Rukundo guilty of genocide, murder as a crime against humanity and extermination as a crime,” the ICTR said in a statement.

The Arusha, Tanzania-based tribunal said Rukundo, who was often escorted by soldiers and militiamen during the violence, kept a list of local Tutsis whose movements he monitored.
