Stop scape- goating Muslims – it’s war and racism that fuel division

by Esme Choonara

Jack Straw’s attack on Muslim women wearing the veil was not an innocent attempt to “raise debate”. He was speaking in a climate of Islamophobia fuelled by the “war on terror”.

It is this climate that promotes segregation and fuels racist attacks, not the decision of some Muslim women to cover their faces, as Straw claimed.

Leading anti-war campaigners have challenged the latest round of scapegoating.

Victoria Brittain, a journalist and member of Respect’s national council, said her immediate reaction to the comments was “amazement, and a foreboding that it would legitimise the crude Islamophobia so current now in some circles”.

She added that wearing the veil is “a choice made by some of the most dynamic, educated young women, who will certainly emerge as leaders of their communities by the time Mr Straw has disappeared from the political scene”.

Stop the War Coalition convenor Lindsey German said, “This argument is being framed in terms of women’s rights. If we’re serious about liberation we should accept the right of women to choose what they wear and when.

“We should reject the idea that liberation can be imposed by politicians who are cynically attacking Muslims to cover for their disastrous wars.”

Jane Shallice, a longstanding campaigner and national officer for the Stop the War Coalition, said, “Some cabinet members have distanced themselves from Straw’s views. But they have reiterated his right to raise this issue.

“It’s not a question of his right to raise this, the primary question is the right of all women to dress how they choose.

“That’s what we fought for in the 1960s and 1970s – the right to wear trousers to work, to wear miniskirts, or whatever!”

As we show on our centre pages this week, Labour ministers both accept the myths of “self-segregating” Muslims and increasingly seek to justify their wars as an attempt to drive back “radical Islam”.

But as the anti-war movement in Britain shows, Muslims and non-Muslims are perfectly capable of uniting – against the likes of Tony Blair and Straw. It is this that New Labour fears.

Rania Khan, a Respect councillor in Tower Hamlets, east London, said, “New Labour has lost the argument over the war. They have lost the argument with the left. So they are reaching out to the right – increasing Islamophobia and whipping up fear of terrorism. That is what’s behind the growth of racism.”

RIYADH (Reuters) – The 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) on Monday condemned a new round of Danish cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Mohammad, saying the values of tolerance were shrinking in Europe.

Danish state TV on Friday broadcast amateur video footage showing members of the anti-immigrant Danish Peoples’ Party (DPP) at a summer camp in August, drinking, singing and taking part in a competition to draw images mocking the Prophet.

“Muslims have noted with concern that the values of tolerance are eroding and there is now shrinking space for others’ religious, social and cultural values in the West,” said a statement sent to Reuters by the Jeddah-based OIC, the world’s largest Islamic grouping.

“The OIC spokesman deplores the act of caricaturing of Prophet Mohammad by the youth members of the Danish Peoples Party and this being shown, regrettably, on state television,” the statement said.

“The running of the footage affected the sensibilities of civilized people and religious beliefs of one fifth of humanity,” it said, adding that Muslims around the world had so far shown restraint.

Just over a year ago violence ensued after the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten published cartoons of the Prophet, including one showing him with a bomb in his turban. Protests led to the deaths of over 50 people in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen has denounced the DPP members for drawing the humiliating cartoons. Senior DPP members refused to apologize and party leader Pia Kjaersgaard criticized media for airing the footage of what she called a private party.

New Danish cartoons illustrate further decay of secular liberal societies

New Danish cartoons illustrate further decay of secular liberal societies

London, UK , October 10, 2006 – Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain strongly condemns the latest series of cartoons that mock the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The cartoons were drawn by activists of the Danish People’s Party and aired on Danish television. The emergence of these new cartoons once again illustrates the further decay of secular liberal societies; under Western “freedom” it is perfectly acceptable to insult and defame religious communities whether they are Muslims, Christians or Jews and religious beliefs have no sanctity.

Once again, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen is hiding behind the veil of “freedom of speech” and claiming that the government has no authority over what the media can and cannot publish. This is despite Section 140 of the Danish Criminal Code prohibiting any person from publicly ridiculing or insulting the dogmas of worship of any lawfully existing religious community in Denmark .

Commenting on the new cartoons, Imran Waheed, media representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, said, “As Muslim anger about these cartoons grows, we will undoubtedly hear Western governments lecturing Muslims to accept the freedom of others to insult and disparage their religion. Those who wish to insult Islam and Muslims, rather than engage in sincere and robust debate, will no doubt once again hide behind the facade of ‘freedom of speech’.”

“People of conscience throughout the world, Muslim and non-Muslim, look forward to the return of the Islamic Caliphate in the Muslim world. History is testament to the Caliphate’s protection of Muslims and non-Muslims from such wanton disrespect.”

Federal Legislation Labels Activism As “Terrorism

Federal Legislation Labels Activism As “Terrorism

InformationLiberation | October 10 2006

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) is currently pending in Congress, and industry groups are doing their best to push it through quickly and with little public scrutiny, Patriot Act style, before Fall recess. Please act now to make sure that the War on Terrorism, and the tragedy of 9/11, isn’t used to push a political agenda and silence dissent.

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act expands the Animal Enterprise Protection Act of 1992 http://www.greenisthenewred.com/blog/aepa. Supporters say it is meant to stem illegal actions taken against controversial animal enterprises, or any company that does business with an animal enterprise. But the sweeping language in the bill goes much, much further:

AETA labels the tactics of Martin Luther King and Gandhi as “terrorism.” It spells out penalties for “an offense involving exclusively a nonviolent physical obstruction of an animal enterprise or a business having a connection to, or relationship with, an animal enterprise, that may result in loss of profits but does not result in bodily injury…” In other words, a terrorism law includes nonviolent civil disobedience.

AETA risks the prosecution of undercover investigators, whistleblowers and other activists as “terrorists.” It defines “economic damage” as including “the loss of profits.” The extremely vague, overly broad language in the bill puts all activists at risk. Causing loss of profits isn’t terrorism. It’s effective activism. And even activists that aren’t prosecuted under the law will feel the chilling effect of its “terrorist” rhetoric.

AETA isn’t needed. Existing laws are already overly broad: the Animal Enterprise Protection Act was used to successfully convict the SHAC 7 this year on “terrorism” charges for running a website. And AETA’s penalties for violence aren’t needed, because the animal protection movement has never killed a human being. All Americans should be concerned, regardless of how they feel about animal issues. The word terrorism should not be batted around against the enemy of the hour, to push a partisan political agenda. Who will be next?

War Crimes Report Shows US Violations of International Law

War Crimes Report Shows US Violations of International Law

Demands Prosecution of US Military and Civilian Leaders

The violence of the Iraq War, the chaos that has come to Iraq, can be traced directly to the illegality of the invasion and occupation of that country and the illegality of the tactics and weapons being used to maintain the occupation. U.S. War Crimes in Iraq and Mechanisms for Accountability documents these violations and calls on us all to demand investigation and prosecution of violations of international law by military and civilian leaders.

10/10/06 “Information Clearing House — — Click here to read the report in full [pdf]

The report was prepared by Consumers for Peace.org with the advice of Karen Parker, noted lawyer in human rights and humanitarian law. Ms. Parker is President of the San-Francisco-based Association of Humanitarian Lawyers (www.humanlaw.org) and Chief Delegate to the United Nations for the Los Angeles-based International Educational Development/Humanitarian Law Project (IED/AHL), an accredited non-governmental organization on the U.N. Secretary-General?s list.

Dahr Jamail, noted independent journalist who spent more than eight months reporting from occupied Iraq, writes the following about the report:

I cannot endorse strongly enough this report prepared by Karen Parker regarding U.S. war crimes in Iraq. Having witnessed much of what is so well documented in this report, it is a clear and encompassing indictment of the Bush Administration for the war crimes they are directly responsible for in Iraq. Until evidence such as this begins to see the light of day in a court of law and the perpetrators brought to justice, the world remains unsafe and unstable from an administration determined to rule the world. After witnessing what they are capable of in Iraq, I have no doubt these people will not stop in their quest for world domination.? Instead, they must be stopped. And the only way to do that is bring the guilty to justice. This document will help achieve that goal. Click here to read the report in full [pdf]

Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Non-Violence, three-time nominee for the Noble Peace Prize, who has visited Iraq 28 times in the last 15 years, writes of the report:

After spending four days in the fortified and secure Green Zone, in Iraq, during September 06, former Secretary of State James Baker III assured that the investigative panel he led had not spent any time wringing our hands over what mistakes might or might not have been created in the past. (NYT, September 20, 2006). The Consumers for Peace report on war crimes committed in Iraq helps us understand our responsibility not to wring our hands but rather to demand accountability from elected representatives by delivering this report to them and to local media. How many people killed? How many families torn apart? How many homes destroyed? How many livelihoods gone? How many lives ruined? How many cities sacrificed? We bear responsibility to end the war in Iraq, insist on just reparations for suffering caused, and promote careful, legal scrutiny of the crimes committed. This report beckons all who read it to stop collaborating with illegal, immoral warmongers who recklessly afflict Iraq. Click here to read the report in full [pdf]

Neil MacKay, multi-award winning Home Affairs and Investigations Editor of the Sunday Herald (Scotland), writes:

“What has happened in Iraq is a great sin and a great crime. The invasion and occupation have stained the concepts of democracy, freedom and liberty; and disgraced the good name of the people of both the United States of America and Great Britain. As a journalist who has investigated the roots of this war, and the on-going horror of what is happening in Iraq, I fully commend this report to readers. It is an important reminder of the blood which is on the hands of our leaders, and the shame that the governments of the UK and the USA have brought to the British and American people by perpetrating a criminal war in our name.” Click here to read the report in full [pdf]

NYTimes/CBS poll: Bush has 34% approval; 83% think he’s “hiding something or mostly lying” about Iraq

by Joe in DC – 10/09/2006 10:31:00 PM

The NY Times/CBS poll released this evening reaffirms what the other polls are showing. The Republicans are in trouble:

And with less than a month before Election Day, the Times/CBS News Poll findings suggest that the scandal involving Mr. Foley, a former congressman from Florida, is alienating Americans from Congress, and weakening a Republican Party that was already struggling to keep control of the House and Senate. By overwhelming numbers, including majorities of Republicans, Americans said that most members of Congress do not follow the same rules of behavior as average Americans, and that most members of Congress consider themselves above the law.

This poll is especially bad for Bush. His credibility on Iraq is non-existent:

The public’s view of Iraq is as dark as it’s been since the war began in 2003: two-thirds said it is going somewhat or very badly, while only 3 percent said the war was going very well. Two-thirds said they disapprove of how President Bush is handling Iraq.

Mr. Bush’s job approval has slipped to 34 percent, one of the lowest levels of his presidency, posing a complication for the White House as it seeks to send him out on the road to rally base voters. Mr. Bush’s job approval rating has even slipped with his base: 75 percent of conservative Republicans approve of the way he has handled his job, compared with 96 percent in November 2004.

Mr. Bush clearly faces constraints as he seeks to address the public concerns about Iraq that have shrouded this midterm election: 83 percent of respondents thought that Mr. Bush was either hiding something or mostly lying when he discussed how the war in Iraq was going.

83 percent. That is an amazing number. Americans do not trust their President on the major issue of the day.

And, Bush thinks the North Korea situation is going to help him.

Everything this administration has donecince its inception has great harm not only to its own citizens, but to the rest of the world as well.

Certainly it is unclear how a single piece of fuselage the size of a dining room table could have been recovered from a marina in Indian Lake, a couple of miles away from the crash site – unless it fell from the sky during an aerial break-up.
