Saddam Hussein : The show must go on

November 14, 2006

Justice at last! Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to hang. From Washington to London the wolves are howling. Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy! The butchers and the whores are banqueting with the blood of the Iraqi children. Three million Iraqis have fled Iraq in the past three years. More than 650,000 have been killed in this war of liberation. The price was worth it, the butchers and the whores are howling. Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy!

In 1946, judging the war crimes committed by those who lost the WWII, the winners established the following principle: “To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.” [International Military Tribunal for the Trial of German Major War Criminals, Nuremberg, Germany 1946]. This principle founded the United Nations and since it has been at the base of the entire building of international law.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan called the US-led invasion of Iraq, “an illegal act that contravened the UN charter”, the “supreme international crime” according to Nuremberg’s trials. That single “supreme international crime” has been estimated to slaughter so far 650,000 innocent Iraqi human beings and murdered thousands of American, British, other countries’ soldiers and the so-called “private contractors”, many of whom “recruited” in the so-called “developing” countries. Globalization at its best! Iraq has been destroyed and the cradle of civilization is now agonizing between two rivers of blood. Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy!

Celebrated in that notorious bordello called “the green zone”, the Saddam Hussein “trial” brings the international community all the way back to the pre-Nuremberg era. It deletes the last 60 years of international law and restores the “legality” of committing the “supreme international crime” by the most barbarian death machine in human history: Corporate America. But the comparison with the Third Reich would be inappropriate. No country invaded by the Nazi had the same fate of Iraq. The guardians of human rights will call this “humanitarian intervention”. Human Rights What? Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy!

That show-trial (where everything was a surprise except the verdict) has been a dirty smokescreen to cover the monstrosity of this scandal happening before our eyes; the illegal invasion, occupation and annihilation of a sovereign and defenseless country. Butchers, clowns and whores have directed a miserable pornographic show against the legitimate president of Iraq while their masters have been plundering the country. In the dock Saddam Hussein was Iraq and Iraq was Saddam Hussein. That many (Iraqis and not) cannot read history while it’s being written adds tragedy to the tragedy but the bloody howls coming from those who should be in the dock won’t change history’s verdict. They will only precipitate all of us in even darker and more dangerous times.

Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy! will write the Imperial historians, raping history as the barbarians have raped the Iraqi children. But those children know better. Four hyenas, the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel and Iran have destroyed a country that could have been a power in the region and a model for the Arab world. The vultures of the international community have been cooperating and watching the bloodbath waiting to share the rich carcass. The control of the energy resources is just part of the whole picture; Iraq had to be destroyed to allow the so-called reshaping of the Middle East. The notorious “political process” has been a formidable Trojan horse that forced the Iraqi People into a civil war. Far from being a failure, the main mission of this bloody project has been accomplished. Iraq as we knew it has gone, probably forever. God bless America…

The land of the free and the home of the brave has just celebrated the last episode of Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy! What a show. The Imperial Democrats have regained control of the Imperial Congress and the Bush Era is over. Victory! Victory! are howling the Imperial liberals. Hillary Clinton is getting ready to reenter into the White House, together with war criminal Bill, the man who still have Iraqi children’s blood on his hands. Victory! Victory! is howling Israel, so happy for the great performance of its candidates to celebrate with some more fire works in the Occupied Territories. Dr. Death resigned as Defense (sic!) Secretary. The show needs some drama after all. Victory! Victory! Americans should be proud is howling a jubilant Imperial anti-war movement that once again is selling illusions and hiding the truth… But please don’t talk about the carnage of babies in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine… The Kafka’s trial is over but the show must go on. Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy!

The Myth of the “Anfal Genocide” Saddam Hussein Did Not “Kill the Kurds”David Hungerford, Al-Moharer.net

November 14, 2006

Many crimes against Iraq have been justified by the demonization of Saddam Hussein. Invasion was justified by claims that he possessed “weapons of mass destruction,” had ties to al-Qaeda, and posed a threat to the territorial United States.

The claims turned out to be lies. There were no “weapons of mass destruction” or programs to develop them. There were no ties to al-Qaeda. He did not threaten U.S. territory.

Those who still support the occupation now say it was justified because Saddam Hussein was a “brutal dictator.” One of the main complaints against him is that “he killed the Kurds.” The usual reference is the Anfal campaign of the Iraqi army from February 23, 1988 to September 6, 1988. It is claimed that Anfal was a campaign of genocide. It can now be said that the “Anfal genocide” never happened. It is another lie.

Ironically it is the second of the illegal U.S.-run “trials” of Mr. Hussein in Baghdad that allows this conclusion. The facts and circumstances of the “trial” can be analyzed without any concession to the legitimacy of the “court.” Nor, since it is illegal, is there any reason to wait for the “court’s” findings before reaching one’s own conclusions. Applicable principles of international law are presented in Appendix A.

Certain facts are not in dispute. The campaign took place in the late stages of the Iran-Iraq war. The Iraqi army fought units of the Iranian army in Northern Iraq. Kurdish guerillas called peshmerga allied with Iran against the government of their own country. In order to suppress the guerillas the Iraqi government displaced large numbers of Kurdish civilians from border areas.

Press reports say the current charge is genocide during Anfal. By any definition the crime of genocide means the extermination of large numbers of people. At first no definite number of civilian fatalities was given in news reports, but in September the “prosecution” was several times reported to say there were 182,000 deaths.

The “trial” on the Anfal charges began on August 21, 2006. There were 13 sessions of the “court” between that date and September 26, at which time it recessed. See Appendix B for the tabulation of articles.

In the press reports studied for this analysis no statement or presentation of methodology was reported. No systematic studies were reported. No sworn affidavits were reported. No expert testimony was reported. Evidence of this kind would have been front-page news. It can be concluded that no such evidence was introduced.

Instead all testimony was anecdotal. As an example, on August 22, the first day of testimony, a witness named Ali Mustapha Hama was heard. He testified to events in the village of Balisan on April 16, 1987. The BBC reported that he said “there was greenish smoke, and minutes later, a smell like rotten apples or garlic. He spoke of a newborn infant who was trying to ‘smell life’, but breathed in the chemicals and died. Many others died too, he added. During cross-examination, defence lawyers asked Mr. Hama how he knew the aircraft were Iraqi, and prompted Hama to say he had helped shelter guerrillas in his village.”

The death of an infant is a very bad thing. Still, the number of fatalities definitely averred by Mr. Hama is one. He also admitted that there was guerilla activity in his village. Genocide is a large-scale crime against civilians, meant to exterminate an ethnic group. Thus Mr. Hama’s testimony did nothing to establish genocide. Another witness heard the same day was not even reported to have made any definite statement of fatalities.

Between August 22 and September 26 the news reports speak of seventeen witnesses. Definite statements of fatalities came to a total of 43. Some of the fatalities could have overlapped. No attempt to differentiate between civilian and military casualties was reported.

Of the fifteen witnesses three admitted to having been peshmerga guerillas, whereas genocide is a crime against civilians. One of the three former guerillas, Moussa Abdullah Moussa, now lives in Tennessee. Another witness, Katrin Michael, now lives in Virginia.

One of the witnesses, Mahmoud Hama Aziz, testified on September 9 to 7 fatalities at an unstated location in 1987, prior to Anfal. The New York Times reported the next day that evidence bearing on Mr. Aziz’ testimony had been found in a mass grave discovered in 2004, whereas the “prosecution” claims investigations have been going on since 1991 (see Doebbler, below.) The timing of the “discovery” is so convenient as to raise still more doubts.

Twenty-one of the 43 fatalities including the Balisan incident occurred in 1987, before Anfal. That leaves at most 22 during the Anfal period or at times not stated. The question arises as to what happened to the other 181,978 of the 182,000 claimed victims. At this rate it will take about 689 years to account for the alleged fatalities.

Hence in the first month of proceedings the “prosecution” presented no case at all.

The original trial judge was removed for political reasons on September 20 (see below.) Later sessions descended from farce into chaos. Defense lawyers boycotted the “trial” on orders of Mr. Hussein. Anonymous “witnesses” gave testimony behind a screen; documents were stolen from defense attorney Badia Arif Izzat in the courtroom building, and so forth.

The prosecution has had all the time and opportunity needed to formulate a case. The alleged events occurred eighteen years ago. Northern Iraq has been out of Baghdad’s control since 1996 when the Clinton administration unilaterally imposed the “no-fly” zones on Iraq.

Nor has there been any lack of investigative expertise and money. The New York Times reported on July 1, 2004 that “The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and agents from the Justice Department.” The NYT also said on July 20, 2005 that the U.S. had spent more than $35 million on the investigations.

In a case as intensely political as this it must be presumed that at the beginning the “prosecution” will present its case at its strongest. It presented a shambles. Moreover the scale of time and resources behind the “prosecution” removes any argument that a case could be made with more effort. There is only one way that is at all plausible, likely, or straightforward to explain the “prosecution’s” failure to even begin to make any case: there was no “Anfal genocide.”

Other circumstances support the same conclusion.

The charges are not even clear. None of the cited news reports give more than the word “genocide.” The specification of charges might answer some questions. A moderate effort found a document termed a “charging instrument” for the first “trial” of Mr. Hussein, the Dujail case. It is posted at: http://www.law.case.edu/saddamtrial/documents/20060515_indictment_trans_saddam_hussein.pdf . Charges for the Anfal “trial” were not posted at the same site, however. Repeated internet searches using “charging instrument” and/or other search terms failed to find the corresponding prosecution statement for the Anfal “trial.” Hence the “prosecution” case is not easily available. It is apparent that the Bush administration and the “prosecution” do not want their case to be known to the public.

The most basic and routine of defendant’s rights are violated. Defense attorney Curtis Doebbler writes:

The violations of unfair trial are too numerous to mention here, but include almost every provision in article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that could be violated at this juncture of the proceedings. . .

The prosecution alleges to have been collecting evidence since at least 1991 which, of course, could only be true if it were the United States government doing the collecting and has at least been doing so since April 2003 when dozens of American lawyers and Iraqis who had not lived in Iraq for years were shuttled in to build a case. The defense lawyers, despite requesting visits with their client since December 2003 when he was detained, have to date not been allowed the confidential visits that are necessary to begin to prepare a defense. No visits were allowed with the most senior lawyers until after the trial had started and at each visit American officials exercise the authority to read any materials brought into the visiting room despite the fact that all meetings remain under close audio and visual surveillance. As if this were not enough, evidence has been withheld from the defense lawyers. They have been denied access to investigative hearings; they have been denied prior notice of witnesses, and they are prevented from even visiting the site of the alleged crime.

http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/forumy/2006/04/farce-of-law-trial-of-saddam-hussein.php

If any sound “prosecution” case was possible these abuses would be unnecessary.

Mr. Hussein’s defense team has been denied physical security despite repeated requests. During the first “trial” three of his attorneys were murdered. During the current “trial” legal assistant Abdel Monem Yassin Hussein was murdered. He was kidnapped on August 29. His body was found five days later. The murders of defense personnel argue further against the possibility of any “prosecution” case.

The blatantly political nature of the “trial” was exposed again on September 20, when puppet Iraqi “prime minister” Nuri al-Maliki removed judge Abdullah al-Amiri from the case. The reason for this outrageous abuse was reported by the New York Times on September 15 as follows:

One witness, a Kurdish farmer, testified that in 1988 he had pleaded with Mr. Hussein for the life of his wife and seven young children. He said a furious Mr. Hussein shouted, “Shut up and get out.”

In court, Mr. Hussein jumped up to defend himself.

“Why did he try to see Saddam Hussein?” he asked the judge, referring to himself in the third person, as is his habit in court. “Wasn’t Saddam a dictator and an enemy to the Kurdish people, as they say?”

The judge replied: “I will answer you: you are not a dictator. Not a dictator,” he repeated. “You were not a dictator.”

Mr. Hussein, smiling, replied, “Thank you.”

Five days later the judge was removed. If the alleged events of 1988 had really occurred it is extremely unlikely that the puppet “government” would again have discredited itself and the “trial” with this shameless interference.

Even more extraordinarily, an AP report on August 21 said that “the trial does not deal with the most notorious gassing the March 1988 attack on Halabja that killed an estimated 5,000 Kurds. That incident will be part of a separate investigation by the Iraqi High Tribunal.” The report did not say why Halabja is to be treated separately.

The Halabja incident is the biggest thing in the “genocide” case. The “prosecution” has dismembered its own case. It is trying to carry water by knocking the bottom out of its own bucket. The omission strongly suggests that there is no more to the Halabja story than there is to the “Anfal genocide.”

***

The most serious doubts arise repeatedly that any valid case against Mr. Hussein can be made. Just as in the notorious “Downing Street Memo” minutes of a July, 2002 meeting of the British cabinet, “the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

In the United States the burden of proof is on the prosecution to prove its case “beyond reasonable doubt.” The defects of the “prosecution’s” case are so great as to constitute overwhelming doubt. There is no reason at all to believe that genocide was committed in the Anfal campaign. Only one conclusion can be drawn: the “Anfal genocide” never happened.

***

In all of the years of its war with Iraq U.S. imperialism has had only one significant political success: the demonization of Saddam Hussein. The “brutal, corrupt dictator” line is heard across the political spectrum. Investigation would seem unnecessary.

One result is that to a great degree antiwar opinion sees the war in Iraq as no more than a war for oil. It is insufficient to stop without looking at Iraq, but that is what almost always happens.

Firstly, the oil already belongs to Iraq. From its side the war has always been a war for sovereignty, i.e., its rights of national self-determination. Since occupation it has also become a war for independence.

“War for oil” also raises further questions. There are many ways to get oil. War is the worst way to get it. The question is why U.S. imperialism has resorted to war. There are many countries that have oil. The United Arab Emirates has almost as much oil as Iraq but nothing is ever heard about it. The question is why Iraq is different.

Again the answer is that modern pre-occupation Iraq always fully asserted its rights of sovereignty. The war is Iraq is an unjust war for oil versus a just war for sovereignty and independence.

The highest questions of any war are questions of historical content and direction, questions of just and unjust causes. Antiwar opinion is most of the time not even aware of these questions. More than anything else it is the demonization of Saddam Hussein that denies the masses a full understanding of the war.

The revolutionary significance of Iraq’s great struggle disappears. The linkage of the struggle in Iraq to that of Palestine disappears. Too often the need to support the just and heroic Iraqi resistance becomes lost; too often the necessity to immediately demand unconditional withdrawal of all foreign forces as objectively the only way to end the war becomes lost.

Very little about Iraq and nothing at all about Saddam Hussein should ever be accepted on the basis of authority. There are no such authorities in the U.S. government. There are no such authorities in the U.S. media. There are no such academic authorities. There are no such authorities in the antiwar movement. Throw away all “authoritative” ideas about Saddam Hussein!

There are only determinations: sound methods, sound concepts, facts and logic, history. On method one can, for instance, look at the Iraqi side directly. Daily accounts of resistance activities are posted in English at: http://www.albasrah.net/pages/mod.php?header=res1&mod=gis&rep=rep . Political statements of the Iraqi Baath Arab Socialist Party and pre-occupation speeches of President Saddam Hussein are posted at http://www.al-moharer.net/qiwa_shabiya/qiwa.html.

The war will end and can only end in the defeat of imperialism and its expulsion from the Persian Gulf. The people of Iraq are stronger than imperialism. Though the whole world shatter, and well it may, in the end the people of Iraq will win.

Victory to Iraq!

Down With Imperialism!

9/11 : ‘Al-Qaeda’ is a Manufactured Intelligence Front

Kawther Salam | June 25 2004

During the past weeks, two American hostages have been killed and decapitated in Iraq and in Saudi Arabia. The media say that these crimes were comitted by Islamic Terrorists.

I have never read any Islamic Rule in the Koran which allows the decapitation of people whether they are Moslems, Christians or Jews, for any reason whatsoever.

I have never read an Islamic Rule which states that the killing of hostages is allowed. All what I remember that Islam has to say in this matter is that somebody who kills a “believer” unlawfully is sanctioned the same as if he had killed all the worlds nations. The word “believer” means “anyone who believes in God” in this context, not only Muslims.

The Koran states that the place where faith in God is held, and equally where the faith in God is broken, is in the heart. The Koran states that nobody can read what is in the hearts of others, or judge them as a believers or disbelievers. Even if their hearts are cut open, it is not possible to know if a person is a believer or not. Knowledge in this matter belongs only to God himself. This should be understood as meaning that Islam expressly forbids killing for religious reasons.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended good treatment for hostages and prisoners during the past Islamic wars. He said: “You should not kill an old man, a child, or a woman. You should not cut a tree or destroy a church…”. Murdering and killing is outside of Islamic morals and principles, which are inviolable.

Seen from a more secular standpoint, an Arabic proverb says ”Nobody can cut the head of a person but his Creator”. This means again that nobody has the right to put an end to anothers life. While Islam expressly forbids suicide, it is still more acceptable to put an end to ones own life than to kill another person.

What does the word “Al-Qaeda” mean ? In Arabic, “Al-Qaeda” has a different meanings, among them “Base”, “Ground”, “Norm”, “Rule”, “Fundament”, “Grammar”. The exact meaning is dependent on the context in which it is used. It depends on the word which follows “Al-Qaeda” in the sentence. “Qawa’ad Askaria” is an Army Base, “Qawa’ad Lugha” stands for Grammar Rules (the Bases of Grammar).

“Qa’ada” is the infinitive of the verb “to sit”. “Ma-Qa’ad” is a chair. “Al-Qaeda” is the base or fundament of something. “Ana raicha Al Qaeda” is colloquial for “I’m going to the toilet”. A very common and widespread use of the word “Al-Qaeda” in different Arab countries in the public language is for the toilet bowl. This name comes from the Arabic verb “Qa’ada” which mean “to sit”, pertinently, on the “Toilet Bowl”. In most Arabs homes there are two kinds of toilets: “Al-Qaeda” also called the “Hamam Franji” or foreign toilet, and “Hamam Arabi” or “Arab toilet” which is a hole in the ground. Lest we forget it, the potty used by small children is called “Ma Qa’adia” or “Little Qaeda”.

Those who founded the glorious “International of Islamic Terror, Al-Qaeda, probably knew too little about common use of Arabic language to know that by using this name for their organization, they risked becoming the laughing stock of everybody who speaks the Arabic “public” language.

To kidnap, torture and execute people are terrorist actions which are in no way related to God or to Islam, and these actions are not rewarded by paradise as some ignorant Western media figures would like to believe.

The terrorist event of New York 11 September 20001, and the terror event of Madrid on 11 March 2004, and other terror events commonly connected to Islam, are clearly not related to Islam if we consider that the Al-Qaeda terror organization was established by the C.I.A in the 1980s. Al-Qaeda is nothing but a conveniently “Islamic” front which enables the C.I.A. to commit crimes in the name of Muslims. It is well known that the Mujahadeen terrorists of Afghanistan were organized, trained and funded by the C.I.A. using the Pakistani ISI as a “cut-out” in order to lure the Soviet Army into Afghanistan at the end of 1979. The Mujahedeen can be seen as C.I.A. terrorism with an islamic name and “islamic” perpetrators. Afghanistan has, for all purposes, been destroyed by these fanatics in furtherance of American interests.

The Al-Qaeda terror organization has caused immense damage to Islam, to Moslems worldwide and to the interests of the peoples of all Arab and Muslim countries. The actions of Al-Qaeda have only served to promote the interests of the U.S. and Israel, which are clearly interested in “reshaping” the Middle East in such a way that they can more easily rape and plunder the region at will.

In fact the C.I.A is using the terrorist actions of its proxy Al-Qaeda in order to give the U.S. an excuse to extend their power into and invade the Arab countries, first countries with rich plunder (Oil) like Iraq, Iran, Saudia Arabia, and second any country which is a “threat” to Israel, or more exactly which Israel dislikes for whatever reason. The third objective for which the C.I.A. is using its proxy Al-Qaeda is to engender fear and hate of Islam and Muslims worldwide. This corresponds to an old and tried ploy of colonizers: to slander and denigrate the target population so that it is acceptable and even called for to commit genocide against them. The peoples of Ireland, Africa and the Americas have all suffered this tragedy, and these regions have been colonized. The next obvious victims are Arabs and Muslims by extension because they live in geographic areas rich in oil and other resources, and because Muslims as a collective are not white enough to be respected as full humans by the criminals in London, Washinton and Tel Aviv.

The immediate question is then: What purpose is the U.S pursuing in Saudi Arabia with the decapitation of Paul Johnson ? Is this crime related to their plans in the region in any way, or is it just one more sideshow related to the upcoming elections in the U.S. designed to distract the american public from some very embarassing information leaks which could endanger the reelection of President Bush ? Will there be a new decapitation every time something embarassing or dangerous for the Bush administration leaks to the media, in the same way as there was a very well timed suicide bomber in Israel every time Sharon would have otherwise been forced to make peace with the Palestinian side ? In a strange coincidence, the murder of Paul Johnson was made public last Thursday or Friday.

The pictures of Johnson’s decapitation were widely shown in the mainstream media. At the same time, last Thursday, two American officers testified before the Commission investigating the 911 crime according to the article by Tom Fiocco linked above. This was conveniently ignored by the mainstream media. If the 911 Commission had chosen to ask these two officers hard questions related to the weirdness of that day, they could probably have been found more than just weirdness and chaos. A pertinent question would have been: could “Al-Qaeda”, without the very opportune “weirdness” around the actions of these two officers, been able to kidnap and fly four airplanes for hours through the USA, to crash them into buildings in two separate cities ? Whatever the answer to this question, the two officers named in the linked article, Navy Captain Charles J. Leidig, Jr. and Brigadier General Montague Winfield have since been promoted by President Bush according to the article of Tom Fiocco.

A strange coincidence around the murder of Paul Johnson is that the Saudi Police apparently cooperated with those who abducted him. Why would a security service trained by American and British C.I.A. fronts like the Vinnell Corporation, cooperate with “Al-Qaeda”, their purported enemy ? This is the second time during the last weeks that Saudi security forces have cooperated with “Al-Qaeda. If this starts happening regularly, it would suggest either a very grave instability in the Kingdom or that the Saudi security forces are run in accordance with American interests

And, why was the body of Paul Johnson, just like Nicholas Berg before him, clothed in an orange Guantanamo-style overall ? Does “Al-Qaeda” go shopping at Guantanamo Bay, or is there something else behind this “coincidence” ?

During the second Palestinian Intifada, the Israeli intelligence tried to create an “Al-Qaeda” organization in the West Bank and and Gaza using the American know-how and experience gained creating Al-Qaeda and Mr. Osama bin Ladin. The Israeli Intelligence services were using the damaged Palestinians economy to lure in unaware Palestinian youths. They provided several Palestinians with machine guns and thousands of dollars to kill Israelis under the name of Al-Qaeda. When the game was discovered by the Palestinians intelligence, the Israelis scurried away and stopped their disgusting “Al-Qaeda” game with Palestinians. Only last week the media carried news of an Israeli (not Palestinian) arrested in the Phillipines for being a member of “Al-Qaeda”

As an example of how different things can be when the USA wants, in April, 1992, the airplane of President Arafat made a forced landing in the desert during a trip between Lybia and Sudan. He was found almost instantly by Israel and America, and brought to safety on the next day. Why is the USA not able to find Osama bin Laden in the same way with all the resources they have ?

On behalf of my people I would like to say that we deny that the terror practices of Al-Qaeda represent Islam and Moslems in any way. We are against the instrumentalization of Islam and all Moslems by the C.I.A through their front organization Al-Qaeda. This disgusting criminal gang has already caused too much death and suffering for innocents of all creeds in many lands. We reject the Al-Qaeda announcement to killing innocents people under the name of Islam for revenge of the injustices comitted against Palestinians. We reject all Al-Qaeda practices as these crimes are against humanity. These crimes are all steered from Washington by the C.I.A. and they only represent U.S. policy.

9/11 : In honor of our veterans, we call for truth

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

=== News Update ===

November 11, 2006

Anniversaries cause us to instinctively pause and reflect, just as our leg jolts forward after a well-positioned tap on the knee. In honor of our veterans to whom we owe a debt we can never repay the least we can do on this Veteran’s Day is look back at the decisions made that sent our troops into battle, and the roles we played in those decisions. Perhaps upon reflection, our reaction may change.

The fifth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 served as the reflex hammer touch to the knee of American conscience. As the country attended memorials and revisited painful memories of 9/11, the reflection also opened our collective mind once again to the many unanswered questions, legitimate concerns and conflicting evidence in the official description of those events.

For us at the Daily Tidings the event served to open discussion among us about this complex subject, about the conspiracy theories that abound in Internet chats, blogs and so-called investigative reports and most importantly, the questions regarding the media’s role in this ongoing issue.

A month later we have found very little we all agreed on. We especially disagree on the role of the media. Since the Tidings doesn’t cover New York City, Washington, D.C. or the federal government, the ambiguity is shaded with absolution.

Nevertheless we are each members of the fourth estate, an essential conglomeration of individuals who adhere to professional guidelines, and who care passionately about this demanding and often thankless opus. With that membership we can all agree on some level comes a responsibility to giving the public the accurate information it needs to make informed decisions. Thus, somewhere in all the banter, we stumbled on one thing we at the Tidings’ truly can agree on.

Apparently, we are not alone. Based on the results of this hallmark 2006 election, the American people are finally asking for change. They don’t like our involvement in Iraq. They voted out many members of the party that put us there. Perhaps they are also ready to question the events and decisions that put us there as well. Perhaps they are ready to ask what really happened on Sept. 11.

We think so. And we call on our colleagues to join us in asking questions.

Every single American daily newspaper must demand of our congressional leaders and those in the executive branch that an independent council be formed to completely and thoroughly investigate the deaths of nearly 3,000 American citizens in the attack of 9/11 an attack that took place on American soil.

Forget the conspiracy theories for a minute and set aside the political gamesmanship. We are a country that spent five years and $100 million investigating President Clinton. We probed the depths of the Iran-Contra scandal a debacle that would have never come fully into the public eye had a special investigator not been appointed.

This administration has spent far more energy and time seeking the leak of Valerie Plame’s identity and Barry Bonds’ use of steroids than it has in fully explaining how three skyscrapers crumbled in an instant and nearly 3,000 people were killed. While an independent investigation may never fully answer every question, it will help to heal the wounds of this nation and widespread distrust of our leaders this attack has caused.

This historic tragedy ranks among the worst days in American history. We owe it to every American but especially those who do battle on our behalf at the behest of our leaders to spare no expense and allow no party loyalty to dissuade us. The government works for us. If it failed us, either in malfeasance or incompetence, then we must know that. If our current actions around the world are shaped by misinformation, we must know that too. Finally, if what we now believe to be true is only further proven, we would do well to hear the evidence that confirms it. If the government’s version of the events of that day are absolutely true, then scrutiny will amplify that truth and lay to rest the skepticism that remains to this day.

If, however, the questions that remain serve to shed light on new information, that too serves the public. And it is the responsibility of this trusted media industry to dig, probe, investigate and uncover the truth behind government events and decisions that impact the public. On this Veterans Day, we can do no less on behalf of the brave men and women who have been sent to the Middle East based upon rationale that stems directly from the events of 9/11. While we pay homage to all veterans of the Armed Forces today, we are reminded of our duty to watch closely those leaders in the White House and Congress who make the decisions to send our troops to war.

We invite every single American daily newspaper to join us in our demand for an independent council to completely and thoroughly investigate the deaths of nearly 3,000 American citizens in the attacks of 9/11.

America will be better informed, and this is our job.

For Evangelicals, Supporting Israel Is ‘God’s Foreign Policy’

=== News Update ===

November 14, 2006

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICKWASHINGTON, Nov. 13 As Israeli bombs fell on Lebanon for a second week last July, the Rev. John Hagee of San Antonio arrived in Washington with 3,500 evangelicals for the first annual conference of his newly founded organization, Christians United For Israel.

At a dinner addressed by the Israeli ambassador, a handful of Republican senators and the chairman of the Republican Party, Mr. Hagee read greetings from President Bush and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel and dispatched the crowd with a message for their representatives in Congress. Tell them “to let Israel do their job” of destroying the Lebanese militia, Hezbollah, Mr. Hagee said.

He called the conflict “a battle between good and evil” and said support for Israel was “God’s foreign policy.”

The next day he took the same message to the White House.

Many conservative Christians say they believe that the president’s support for Israel fulfills a biblical injunction to protect the Jewish state, which some of them think will play a pivotal role in the second coming. Many on the left, in turn, fear that such theology may influence decisions the administration makes toward Israel and the Middle East.

Administration officials say that the meeting with Mr. Hagee was a courtesy for a political ally and that evangelical theology has no effect on policy making. But the alliance of Israel, its evangelical Christian supporters and President Bush has never been closer or more potent. In the wake of the summer war in southern Lebanon, reports that Hezbollah’s sponsor, Iran, may be pushing for nuclear weapons have galvanized conservative Christian support for Israel into a political force that will be hard to ignore.

For one thing, white evangelicals make up about a quarter of the electorate. Whatever strains may be creeping into the Israeli-American alliance over Iraq, the Palestinians and Iran, a large part of the Republican Party’s base remains committed to a fiercely pro-Israel agenda that seems likely to have an effect on policy choices.

Mr. Hagee says his message for the White House was, “Every time there has been a fight like this over the last 50 years, the State Department would send someone over in a jet to call for a cease-fire. The terrorists would rest, rearm and retaliate.” He added, “Appeasement has never helped the Jewish people.”

This time Elliott Abrams, the White House deputy national security adviser who met with him, essentially agreed, Mr. Hagee said.

Leaving the White House offices, “we felt we were on the right track,” he said.

Now, in tandem with the Israeli government, many evangelical Christians have focused on a new villain, Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Evangelical broadcasters and commentators have seized on Mr. Ahmadinejad’s comments questioning the Holocaust and calling for the abolition of the Israeli state. And many evangelicals now talk of the Iranian leader as a “mortal threat” to Israel.

Some evangelical leaders say they are wary of reports that a panel including former Secretary of State James A. Baker III might recommend negotiating with Iran about the future of Iraq. “It certainly bothers me,” said Dr. James C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential conservative Christians. “That has the same kind of feel to it as the British negotiating with Germany, Italy and Japan in the run up to World War II.”

At rallies this fall for Christian conservative voters, Dr. Dobson sometimes singled out Mr. Ahmadinejad as a reason to go to the polls, arguing that Democrats could not be trusted to face down such dangers. “ Hitler told everybody what he was going to do, and Ahmadinejad is saying exactly what he is going to do,” Dr. Dobson explained. “He is talking genocide.”

The same name, with many pronunciations, comes up repeatedly on Christian talk radio shows, said Gary Bauer, a Christian conservative political organizer. “I am not sure there is a foreign leader who has made a bigger splash in American culture since Khrushchev, certainly among committed Christians,” he said.

Mr. Hagee, for his part, said Mr. Ahmadinejad’s comments about Israel and the Holocaust were part of what motivated him to found Christians United For Israel late last year. Since the fight with Hezbollah, Mr. Hagee said, he is doing all he can to keep the pressure on United States officials to take a hard line with Iran.

When 5,000 evangelicals gathered last month for a “Night to Honor Israel” at his San Antonio megachurch, for example, Mr. Ahmadinejad was much discussed.

Mr. Hagee compared the Iranian leader with the biblical pharaoh of Egypt. “Pharaoh threatened Israel and he ended up fish food,” Mr. Hagee said, to great applause.

Evangelical Christians who know President Bush, including Marvin Olasky, editor of the magazine World and a former Bush adviser, said Mr. Bush, unlike President Reagan, has never shown any interest in prophecies of the second coming.

Such theological details, however, have not kept the Israeli government and Jewish pro-Israel lobbying groups from capitalizing on the powerful support of American evangelicals. Fearing a backlash over Lebanon last July, Israeli officials and their American allies sought public statements of support from American evangelicals. Some groups declined because of risks to missionaries in the Arab world.

Dr. Dobson read a statement on his popular radio program expressing “heartache” at the civilian casualties but comparing Israel’s fight to “the Biblical skirmish between little David and mighty Goliath.” He explained, “There sits little Israel with its five million beleaguered Jews, surrounded by five hundred million Muslims whose leaders are determined to drive it into the sea.”

Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, the founder of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews and the Israeli government’s official goodwill ambassador to evangelicals, said the statements turned out to be superfluous because there was a groundswell of grass roots evangelical support.

Mr. Eckstein said he had discovered the depth of that support when he ran television commercials on the Fox News Channel seeking donations. The response, mainly from evangelicals, “burned out the call centers,” Mr. Eckstein said. During the five-week war, his group added 30,000 new donors. Thanks to the influx of money, he said his organization has exceeded its income from the first 10 months of last year by 60 percent, putting it on track to pull in $80 million this year. “The war really generated a momentum,” Mr. Eckstein said.

Evangelicals’ support for Israel, of course, is far from uniform. Mr. Hagee is an author of several books about the interpretation of biblical prophecies. He says he believes the Bible assigns Israel a pivotal role as a harbinger of the second coming. Citing passages from Revelation and Ezekiel, he argues that conflict between Israel and Iran may be a sign that that time is approaching.

Others say they believe more generally that God maintains his Old Testament covenant with the Jewish people and thus commands Christian believers to help protect their “older brothers.”

“My theology indicates that Israel is covenant land,” Dr. Dobson said in an interview.

Many conservative Christians and their Jewish allies acknowledge a certain tension between the evangelical belief in a Biblical commission to convert non-Christians and their simultaneous desire to help the Jews of Israel.

“Despite all the spiritual shortcomings of the Jewish people,” Dr. Dobson said, “according to scripture and those criticisms come not from Christians but from the Old Testament. Just look in Deuteronomy, where Jews are referred to as a stiff-necked and stubborn people despite all of that, God has chosen to bless them as his people. God chose to bless Abraham and his seed not because they were a perfect people any more than the rest of the human family.”

Dr. Dobson, along with some other evangelicals, has expressed disappointment with what he saw as the Bush administration’s pressure on Israel to sign the cease-fire that ended the fight.

“They began by saying they had to take a hard line, by saying they would support Israel and they ended up urging them to compromise and go home,” Dr. Dobson said. “All that is going to do is allow everybody to reload. That didn’t solve anything.” (Mr. Hagee said that he believed the administration gave Israel “ample time” but that Israel erred by not “unleashing the full might of its ground troops” until it was too late.)

The Israeli government and its American allies have been building their alliance with evangelicals for decades. Israeli officials began working closely with Mr. Hagee and his church, for example, a quarter century ago, when he met several times with then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin.

The Jerusalem Post, an English-language newspaper, recently started an edition for American Christians.

The Israeli government temporarily cut off ties with the Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson after he suggested that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s stroke might have been God’s punishment for withdrawing from territory that belonged to the Biblical Israel. But then Mr. Robertson flew to Israel during the fight with Hezbollah. In a gesture of reconciliation, the Israeli government recently worked with him to film a television commercial to attract Christian tourists.

“Israel to walk where Jesus walked, to pray where Jesus prayed, to stand where he stood there is no other place like it on earth,” Mr. Robertson says in the commercial, according to the Jerusalem Post.

No militants killed in Pakistan madrassa attack, commission says

By Turkish Press

11/14/06 “Turkish Press” — Islamabad – A legal panel in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province has ruled out any militant link to a religious school that was bombed last month, leaving 82 people dead, media reports said Tuesday.
The Peshawar High Court Bar Association’s commission investigating the airstrike in the Bajaur area said in a report that no foreign elements were enrolled in the madrassa located in the remote tribal region bordering Afghanistan, according to the Daily Times newspaper.

All those killed in the October 30 airstrike were students, aged 9 to 18, it said, contrary to government claims that the school was a training centre for Islamic militants and that all the casualties were adults being prepared to carry out terrorist attacks.

While the Pakistani government took responsibility for the bombing, the commission said the airstrike came from Afghan territory where US-led coalition troops are fighting Taliban forces.

American aircraft were “heard flying in the area” on the day of the attack, the report added, citing witnesses.

The commission also said no arms or ammunition was recovered from the bombed school that would indicate any militant training.

The incident triggered a wave of anger among Pakistan’s tribal regions against the central government, which was accused of killing innocent people in its support of the US-led war on terrorism.

After the Bajaur strike, 42 Pakistan Army recruits died in a November 8 suicide bombing at a camp in Dargai, also in North-West Frontier Province, located north-east of the provincial capital, Peshawar. Analysts saw the attack as retaliation for the Bajaur strike, but government authorities said it was too early to establish such a link.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, a strong ally of the United States, reiterated that action against terrorists would continue and the government would rein in extremist forces in the country.

The show must go on

Justice at last! Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to hang. From Washington to London the wolves are howling. Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy! The butchers and the whores are banqueting with the blood of the Iraqi children. Three million Iraqis have fled Iraq in the past three years. More than 650,000 have been killed in this war of liberation. The price was worth it, the butchers and the whores are howling. Freedom! Freedom! Democracy! Democracy! (…) Celebrated in that notorious bordello called “the green zone”, the Saddam Hussein “trial” brings the international community all the way back to the pre-Nuremberg era. It deletes the last 60 years of international law and restores the “legality” of committing the “supreme international crime” by the most barbarian death machine in human history: Corporate America. In the dock Saddam Hussein was Iraq and Iraq was Saddam Hussein…

`WARLIKE POLICIES BASED ON THE POLITICS OF FEAR’ – The lie that is `islamofascism’

President George Bush, along with other neoconservatives in the US, has adopted the term “islamofascist” to imply that a wide range of organisations are the 21st-century successors of Nazism and communism. This is not only inaccurate, it is deliberately intended to promote the idea of preventive wars.

The use of such a crude term as “Islamic fascism” could be ignored if the words had not been used publicly by President George Bush in a press conference this August, and then repeated in statements by other United States officials, to imply that such widely differing movements as al-Qaida, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Hizbullah were the successors of Nazism and communism. Renaming the “war on terror” as the “war on Islamic fascism” was meant to place Muslim fundamentalist movements among the totalitarian enterprises of the 20th century. It was no innocent play on words, but rather designed to legitimise warlike policies based on crude analogies and the politics of fear.

Lebanon Muslims outnumber Christians 2 to 1

According to the survey, published in the independent An Nahar newspaper, Lebanon has 4.855 million people, of whom just over 35 per cent are Christian, 29 per cent Shiite Muslim, 29 per cent Sunni Muslim and 5 per cent Druze.

Such figures are so sensitive in Lebanon that the last official census was conducted in 1932 during the French Mandate, which said Christians made up 55 per cent of the population.

9/11 : ‘Al-Qaeda’ is a Manufactured Intelligence Front

The Myth of the “Anfal Genocide” – Saddam Hussein Did Not “Kill the Kurds”

Hussein in Baghdad that allows this conclusion…

NATO QUEBEC CONFERENCE: NATO Involved in flawed Afghanistan Bomb, Brute and Bribe Operation

…Since 2001, most of the NATO countries have been belligerents in Afghanistan. The current “mission” described as a 3D – defense, development, and diplomacy- mission violates a fundamental international principle that a belligerent state should never be involved on the ground in reconstruction. NATO states are supporting a 3 B campaign: BOMB, BRUTE, and AND BRIBE OPERATION. Bombing a village, blasting in doors, brutally killing and wounding citizens and ignoring culture and then bribing with funds for reconstruction of hospitals to heal the victims are beyond any claims of legitimacy…

Listen Up, You Congressional Morons!

Well, listen up, you morons, particularly those of you in Congress, both coming and going, because I am going to tell you, in plain language and without subtle innuendo, exactly what it is that voters said this past week.

None of you has a mandate for anything. Not one. Had each elected position on last week’s ballot carried an option marked “leave this job vacant for the entire term,” a much larger number of you now would be seeking new employment than you possibly can imagine.

Very few of you actually are wanted in your position. You newly elected are there simply because we wanted to deliver a message to all of you, not because you somehow are better in our eyes. Those of you heading out the door are leaving for the same reason. Make no mistake about this fact and get over yourselves. Are you listening, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi? Get over yourself and do it now. Our patience with Congressional hubris and incompetence has grown exceedingly thin.

Mother Tells All About White House Sex Slave Ring And Son’s Kidnapping

If you recall, the stories of 15-year-old callboys wandering through the White House in the middle of the night was linked to the “Franklin Cover-Up” case exposed by Nebraska State Sen. John DeCamp. In that case, a Republican operative named Larry King was involved with procuring boys and girls from Boys Town in Nebraska and elsewhere and entrapping them in a child sex-slave and espionage ring. King, with an annual salary of under 20K, was throwing sex parties for the powerful in a $5,000-a-month condo in Washingotn, DC; apparently taping the proceedings for blackmail purposes.

One of the victims of this ring was one Paul Bonacci, who testified in court proceedings that he helped kidnap Johnny Gosch into this ring in 1982. It was apparently at 2:29 AM, Sunday, Feb. 20 that the question was first asked — is “Jeff Gannon” really Johnny Gosch?

By the end of the day, Hunter S. Thompson was reported dead.
