The Islamists were the one hope for Somalia

By Martin Fletcher

01/10/07 “Times” — — My colleague Rosemary Righter wrote last week that the defeat of Somalia’s Islamic courts by Ethiopian forces was the “first piece of potentially good news in two devastating decades”.

As one of the few journalists who has visited Mogadishu recently, I beg to differ. The good news came in June. That is when the courts routed the warlords who had turned Somalia into the world’s most anarchic state during a 15-year civil war that left a million dead.

I am no apologist for the courts. Their leadership included extremists with dangerous intentions and connections. But for six months they achieved the near-impossible feat of restoring order to a country that appeared ungovernable.

This was not done by “suppressing, with draconian punishments, what remained of personal freedoms” — unless you count banning guns and the narcotic qat, which rendered half Somalia’s menfolk senseless. The courts were less repressive than our Saudi Arabian friends. They publicly executed two murderers (a fraction of the 24 executions in Texas last year), and discouraged Western dancing, music and films, but at least people could walk the streets without being robbed or killed. That trumps most other considerations. Ask any Iraqi.

The Islamists have now been replaced — with Washington’s connivance — by a weak, fragile Government that was created long before the courts won power, that includes the very warlords they defeated and relies for survival on Somalia’s worst enemy.

For the sake of the long-suffering Somali people I hope it can impose its authority. But Washington has taken a big gamble, and nobody should be surprised if the warlords are soon plundering Somalia again or the Islamists are waging guerrilla war.

The Government’s appeal for Somalis to hand in their vast arsenal of guns has flopped. The courts’ militiamen have mostly melted back into the population, much as Saddam’s army did after the US invasion of Iraq. Mogadishu’s powerful Hawiye clan regards with deep suspicion a Government led by a Darod, President Abdullahi Yusuf. An African Union peacekeeping force is far off and Somalis will not tolerate the presence of troops from (“Christian”) Ethiopia for long.

Washington backed military intervention by Ethiopia’s unsavoury regime because it regarded the courts as a new Taleban, and accused them of harbouring al-Qaeda terrorists. It would surely have done better to try engaging the courts.

The US has a record of confronting Islamic movements. It backed Israel’s disastrous war against Hezbollah last summer. It never accepted the Palestinians’ election of a Hamas Government. It cold-shouldered Iran even when the relatively moderate Mohammed Khatami was President. In each case it succeeded only in boosting the extremists.

“Kill ’em all and let God sort ’em out” Boykin gets the boot

WEB EXCLUSIVE

By Michael Hirsh and Mark Hosenball

Newsweek

Updated: 5:05 p.m. MT Jan 9, 2007

A devout evangelical Christian, he achieved notoriety in October 2003 when he was videotaped telling a church audience that the god of a Muslim warlord was “an idol” and that “my God was a real God.”

Gates Cleans House at the Pentagon. New Pentagon chief is expected to oust the U.S. general involved in the Somalia strikes.

Jan. 9, 2007 – Airstrikes this week on alleged Al Qaeda figures in Somalia may prove to be one of the last counterterrorism operations associated with a controversial Pentagon general who has overseen the deployment of secret U.S. Special Ops teams against suspected terror plotters, defense experts close to the Pentagon and intelligence community tell NEWSWEEK.

Lt. Gen. William Boykin and his boss, soon-to-depart Defense Undersecretary for Intelligence Steve Cambone, have guided or taken part in the planning of such covert operations against Al Qaeda-linked groups in several countries since 9/11. There is no indication that new Defense Secretary Robert Gates disagrees with the Somalia operation this week. But Boykin has long been a divisive figure. A devout evangelical Christian, he achieved notoriety in October 2003 when he was videotaped telling a church audience that the god of a Muslim warlord was “an idol” and that “my God was a real God.” Boykin and Cambone have also generated controversy by allegedly seeking to wrest control of intelligence-gathering from the CIA. Gates has said he is especially determined to improve cooperation between the Department of Defense and the CIA. In written testimony during his confirmation process last fall, Gates said he was “unhappy about the dominance of the Defense Department in the intelligence arena”—a key element of Cambone’s and Boykin’s approach.

While Cambone’s departure has been announced, Boykin’s has not. A Defense Department spokesman would not confirm Wednesday that Boykin was planning to retire, but he declined to deny it either. “There have been no announcements about his retirement,” said the spokesman, Maj. David Smith. A U.S. intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity owing to the sensitivity of the subject, said that Boykin currently was still on the job. But word around the Pentagon was that Gates would ask Boykin to go, this official said. Consultants who work with the intelligence and Special Operations community said it was all but certain that Boykin was following Cambone out the door. “If you’re getting rid of Cambone, you almost certainly have to get rid of Boykin,” says Philip Giraldi, a former CIA counterterrorism official who stays in touch with the community. “They’re hand in glove. Gates feels it all went out of control, that they’re doing too many things in too many places.”

Boykin still has supporters inside the defense and intelligence community who say they will be sorry to see him go. Considered a near-legendary figure in the Special Operations community, Boykin was badly wounded in the “Black Hawk Down” attack in 1993 in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, where he commanded Delta Force. And his strategy of quietly destroying jihadist cells outside Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11 has had its successes. Among them: the capture of Algerian terrorist Abderrazak al-Para in 2004, the assassination of a jihadist leader in Yemen by a Hellfire missile strike in 2004 and the routing of the Abu Sayyaf terror group from Basilan Island in the Philippines. “It was Gen. Boykin who had the best chance of becoming the Patton of the war on terror,” says John Arquilla of the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, Calif. “He really wanted to put the W back in GWOT”—referring to the White House acronym for the global war on terror.

But the killing of innocents in some of these attacks has been costly to America’s reputation as well. The attacks in Somalia by U.S. Air Force AC-130 gunships temporarily based in neighboring Kenya began Sunday. They were launched by the Joint Task Force based in Djibouti, with help from the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the CIA and the National Security Agency, as well as Ethiopian forces. The targets: a handful of Al Qaeda operatives suspected in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as other alleged Al Qaeda associates in Somalia, U.S. officials said. The jihadis were believed to be on the run since U.S.-backed Ethiopian forces overran Mogadishu a week ago. According to an official U.S. State Department cable described to NEWSWEEK, the Al Qaeda suspects were “co-located” with forces of the fleeing Islamic Courts Union in remote southern Somalia.

Pentagon spokesman Joe Carpenter said the targets were “principal Al Qaeda leadership in the region. We’re not discussing their identities or the individuals that were targeted.” However, intelligence officials said U.S. forces were hoping that at least one of the three of the figures involved in the planning of the 1998 embassy attacks was among the dozens reported killed by the strikes. Two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the details of the operation were classified, said it was not confirmed whether any of the Al Qaeda figures was dead.

Critics of the covert program say that Gates and Cambone’s replacement, Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper, are concerned that too much collateral damage may work against U.S. interests. Giraldi says the U.S. Special Ops teams operate too often without accountability, not even notifying the local U.S. Embassy of their presence. In one case in East Africa a clandestine team was arrested by the host government and had to be bailed out by the ambassador, Giraldi says. Adds Arquilla, an advocate of dropping small teams into countries rather than launching airstrikes: “There’s a growing realization in the Pentagon that the more collateral damage is done, the worse is our position in the ‘battle of the story’—in other words, every time we kill innocents our story is much less compelling and the clash of civilizations story is much more compelling.”

Boykin has largely operated in the shadows—his only official title is deputy undersecretary of intelligence—and Pentagon spokesmen say neither he nor Cambone is officially involved in operations, only policy. But last spring, Sen. John Warner, then the Republican chairman of the Armed Services Committee, came out publicly against a bid to name Boykin head of Special Operations Command.

An Arab Woman Blues – January 10, 2006

Warning to readers: I frankly don’t give a damn, but just to let you know that the following sequel to Part I & II contains profanities. And if you are expecting a lady like response from me vis a vis the events, forget it and move on to another blog that will manage your sensitivities.

******

Let me ask you something.
For fuck’s sake , what have WE done to You ?
Yes We – the Iraqi people . What crimes have we committed against you ?
You : United dickheads of America, Great shitty Britain, neurotic paranoid Israel and self flagellating Iran .
Answer Me now. I demand a reply now !

Is it not enough that for over three decades we lived under One party Dictatorship ?
Is it not enough that we lost over 500’000 thousand of our young fine men during the Iraq-Iran War – fighting some crazy mullahs who want to “liberate” the peninsula with their fossilized ideologies ?
Is it not enough that we were bombed senseless during Gulf War I and lost more thousands?
Is it not enough that we had to live under a draconian, savage embargo that no people in history had known and lost over another million people in the process? Half of which were Babies – babies you fucking bastards. Babies left to die in squalid conditions, tummies bloated by hunger and disease.
Is it not enough that we still have to live with depleted Uranium that has wrecked havoc in our bodies and riddled us with cancer. And you know damn well that this poison will be staying in our land for centuries.
Is it not enough that we had to sell our furnitures, books, clothes and some even sold their kidneys for God’s sake, during the sanction years, so families can survive.
Is it not enough that men with doctorats worked as taxi drivers , rubbish collectors and porters in neighboring countries ?
Is it not enough that mothers had to prostitute themselves to feed their kids ?

Is it not enough for you ?
No you wanted more – more more more …
Like a bottomless pit. Like a beast with a hole in his gut that no amount of anything will fill.
So what did you do? You went ahead and took some more.

Gulf War II – This was no fucking war . This was an INVASION, and an OCCUPATION .
And you bombed some more, bombed away until oblivion . 700 fucking tons of bombs fell on our heads in operation Freedom, Liberation, Democracy…or whatever lie you used.
(you know, I have become so sick of these words, every time I hear them I want to throw up right in your face.)

And then you rolled in. Smelly Brits in the South, filthy Americans in the center whilst those other bastards from Iran were guiding you to the right spots and the other bastards the Kurds made the North cozy for you.
So you pillaged. Oil wells, museums, libraries, artifacts, palaces, homes, huts, anything you can grab.
Was that not enough ? Oh no it was not.
You had to have some more….

So you destroyed-buildings, schools, universities, orphanages, hospitals, shops, houses, fields, villages, cities, towns.
And that was not enough.
So you shot left right and center, being wired to hate with zeal.
You know that feeling of zeal, that red hot hatred that runs in your veins. You know it all too well.
That burning contempt that loves to humiliate first then murder. The rush of getting them all. You know what am talking about you filthy bastards. You know.
So you trained mercenaries, snipers , contractors, militias, death squads, spies and you paid them with our blood money.

And that was not enough for you just to kill mercilessly. No it was not.
You first had to humiliate and insult – sandnigger, towelhead, raghead, desert scum, muslim mother fuckers, Iraqis sons of bitches, Arab sons of whores -cursing and wishing hell, cursing and threatening Death.
And still that is not enough for you.
So you had to do more.Imprison- prisons and camps all over. Hundreds, thousands, with no food, with no medical care, crammed together, pissing and defecating on themselves, tied up like animals, hooded, squatting in vomit, in urine, in feces for days, for weeks for months, for years in the burning sun , in the bitter cold and still there waiting for your final say.
And that is still not enough.
So you decided to Torture- bricks, sticks, canes, brooms, drills, sledgehammers, ropes, whips, electrical wires, razors, spikes, rods, iron bars… and only the Devil knows what else you came up with…

Were you satisfied ? Oh no.
More, more, more cried the Beast inside of you .
So you raped – rape Abeer, rape in Abu Ghraib, rape Saddam, rape boys, rape men, rape girls, rape women, rape history, rape monuments, rape sacred places, rape the earth, rape the sky , rape the rivers…

Enough ? Oh no- You did not reach that place where the thrill tintillates you fully.
So you murder, slaughter, kill in cold blood, with acute precision -Abeer, Mahmoudiah,Haditha, Ramadi, Al Qaem,Basrah, Fallujah,Baghdad, Mosul, Tikrit…Saddam.
You left nothing and no one . Well over 800’000 dead and 100 a day sacrificed in your satanic ritual.
And is that enough ? Oh no. You have to have more. That climax has not reached you yet.
So you burn, you mutilate, you spit, you kick, you thump, you piss, you curse…The Dead.
And is that enough for you ? Still not.
So you continue and persevere. More more more….. hypnotized by Cruelty, enthralled by Viciousness, entranced by Blood, enraptured by Savagery, mesmerized by Death, gripped by Demons…
More, more , more.

And in the dumps , the swamps , the garbage that has piled up for years, amidst the smell of decomposing bodies, rotten flesh, limbs torn apart, sniffing stray dogs, little Iraqi children who probably escaped after some gory rape scene, with a red rash around their mouths or waiting to be given away or sold to anyone willing to buy them – scavenge for morsels to eat .

And it will never be enough for You .

War Criminal : U.S. soldier accused of murder had been diagnosed as homicidal

War Criminal :

U.S. soldier accused of murder had been diagnosed as homicidal

By RYAN LENZ

Associated Press

Once in the house, Green herded the father, mother and 5-year-old daughter to another room, closed the door and shot them dead. Green had blood on his clothes and boots when he returned. Green and at least two others took turns raping the other daughter before killing her with the family’s AK-47. They set her body on fire.

01/09/07 “AP” — — -FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – An Army private charged with the slaughter of an Iraqi family was diagnosed as a homicidal threat by a military mental health team three months before the attack.

Pfc. Steven D. Green was found to have “homicidal ideations” after seeking help from an Army Combat Stress Team in Iraq on Dec. 21, 2005. Green, who grew up in Midland, Texas, said he was angry about the war, desperate to avenge the death of comrades and driven to kill Iraqi citizens, according to an investigation by The Associated Press.

The treatment was several small doses of Seroquel – a drug to regulate his mood – and a directive to get some sleep, according to medical records obtained by the AP. The next day, he returned to duty in the particularly violent stretch of desert in the southern Baghdad suburbs known as the “Triangle of Death.”

On March 12, 2006, Iraqi police reported a break-in at the home of a family in Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles from Baghdad. The intruders shot and killed the father, mother and two young daughters. The older girl, 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, was raped and her body set afire.

The carnage first was assumed to be the work of insurgents. That changed in late June when two members of Green’s unit told their superiors of suspicions that soldiers were involved in the killings. Now the Army believes Green and four other soldiers, including Pfc. Bryan L. Howard, 23, of Huffman, Texas, are responsible. One of them has confessed and provided information to prosecutors; in testimony at his court-martial, the soldier identified Green as the ringleader.

If the charges are true, the attack would be among the most horrific instances of criminal behavior by American troops in the nearly four-year-old war. It also would represent a worst-case scenario for the military’s much-criticized practice of keeping mentally and emotionally unfit personnel in the killing fields of Iraq.

Col. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie, psychiatry counsel to the Army Surgeon General, would not specifically discuss Green when contacted by The AP. She defended the military’s policies regarding the treatment of emotionally or psychologically distressed soldiers.

“If unresponsive to treatment and/or a persistent danger to self or others, they will be evacuated,” Ritchie told The AP in an e-mail.

The 101st Airborne Division also declined to comment, noting it is an open federal case.

The Army and the Marines, who have the most personnel on the ground in Iraq, have been faulted for the manner in which troops with mental and emotional difficulties are being treated.

Sending troops already in Iraq who have been diagnosed with mental illness back to combat duty – often under medication that has not been prescribed long enough to have provided relief – has been a particular criticism.

Green has been charged with the murders and rape and pleaded not guilty in federal court in Kentucky. He is being tried in federal court because his arrest came after he had been discharged from the Army. Three others face the same charges and will be court-martialed.

>From interviews with people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by the military to discuss the case, and from viewing the Army’s medical and investigative records, the AP also has learned:

_ Three months passed without Army doctors and clinicians from the Combat Stress Team having any contact with Green. He was summoned for a second examination on March 20, 2006 – eight days after the killing of the family. Green was diagnosed as having an anti-social personality disorder and declared unfit for service. The process of discharging him began a week later and he was sent home.

_ The Army’s own investigation of Green’s initial treatment, prompted by concerns he and others would use mental health problems as a defense in trial, is highly critical. Among the most salient findings from a July review of Green’s treatment: “Although a safety assessment was conducted, there is no safety plan addressing how Soldier (Green) will keep from acting on his homicidal thoughts.”

_ Lt. Col. Elizabeth Bowler, a psychiatrist and Army reservist from California who took over the Combat Stress Team with Green’s unit in January, recommended his discharge after the second examination in March. Yet she wrote a final evaluation that said Green exhibited no traits that would indicate dangerously erratic or homicidal moods, according to documents viewed by The AP.

Green deployed to Iraq in September 2005 from Fort Campbell with a battalion from the 101st Airborne Division’s 502nd Infantry Regiment. The unit was charged with security operations and assisting Iraqi army units in the “Triangle of Death.”

Eleven days before Green’s first visit with the stress team in December 2005, he and five others were manning a checkpoint when an Iraqi civilian approached, according to testimony in military hearings. The civilian was familiar because of his status as a sometimes informant. He greeted the soldiers warmly before pulling a pistol from his belt and shooting two of them at point-blank range.

Green’s behavior worsened after that, according to commanders. He was directed to visit doctors a second time. Eight days later, Bowler told commanders that Green was unfit for service, according to documents. The discharge process for Green concluded in May 2006.

The Pentagon issued new guidelines in November that prevent personnel with certain pre-existing mental problems from deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan. Clinicians evaluating whether a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan is fit for service are now required to review all medical records. Mental illnesses that are not expected to be resolved in one year will be cause for discharge.

The Army’s hearings on the family’s murder concluded in August. Those who testified put forth this outline of the crime:

The plot to rape and kill was hatched as the soldiers hit golf balls at a checkpoint. They had seen the older daughter on patrols in the area. After drinking whiskey bought from Iraqi policemen, they masked their faces and crept through backyards in afternoon daylight to get to the family’s home.

They knew the family kept a gun in one bedroom for protection.

Once in the house, Green herded the father, mother and 5-year-old daughter to another room, closed the door and shot them dead. Green had blood on his clothes and boots when he returned.

Green and at least two others took turns raping the other daughter before killing her with the family’s AK-47. They set her body on fire with kerosene dumped from a lamp in the kitchen in an effort to hide evidence.

Steven Green is in custody at an undisclosed location in Kentucky, according to federal law-enforcement officials. Prosecutors have not said if they will seek the death penalty.

Pfc. Jesse V. Spielman, 22, of Chambersburg, Pa.; Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, 24, of Barstow, Calif.; and Howard have been charged with rape and murder and await courts-martial. They are in custody at Fort Campbell.

Spc. James P. Barker, 24, of Fresno, Calif., pleaded guilty in November as part of an agreement to testify against the others.

Rape, murder, and complicity in Mahmudiya

Rape, murder, and complicity in Mahmudiya

Eli Stephens, Left I on the News

abir3.jpg

January 9, 2007

Back in June the world learned of one of the more horrifying incidents in the U.S. figurative rape of Iraq, and that was the literal rape and murder (by fire) of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, along with the murder of her entire family.

There have been rumors before about the soldier who seems to have been the principal instigator of the attack, but now it appears they’re being confirmed:

An Army private charged with the slaughter of an Iraqi family was diagnosed as a homicidal threat by a military mental health team three months before the attack.

Pfc. Steven D. Green was found to have “homicidal ideations” after seeking help from an Army Combat Stress Team in Iraq on Dec. 21, 2005. Green said he was angry about the war, desperate to avenge the death of comrades and driven to kill Iraqi citizens, according to an investigation by The Associated Press.

The treatment was several small doses of Seroquel — a drug to regulate his mood — and a directive to get some sleep, according to medical records obtained by the AP. The next day, he returned to duty.

Three months later, Abeer al-Janabi and her family were dead. But the take home message of this incident isn’t that a soldier with “homicidal ideations” (whatever they might be) went on to murder someone in a horrific fashion. It’s that the Army was well aware of his problems and sent him back on duty anyway, and that four other soldiers, who we presume did not have the same “issues” as Pfc. Green, were perfectly happy to accompany him on his “mission” of terror. Not to mention that they, and quite likely various superiors, managed to keep the entire incident covered up for months.

Note this rather suspicious sequence of events:

Three months passed [after his diagnosis in December] without Army doctors and clinicians from the Combat Stress Team having any contact with Green. He was summoned for a second examination on March 20, 2006 — eight days after the killing of the family. Green was diagnosed as having an anti-social personality disorder and declared unfit for service. The process of discharging him began a week later and he was sent home.

What a remarkable coincidence, eh?

Let me close by repeating a portion of my post from back in July:

The killing of the family was originally reported by the military as due to “insurgent activity.” The same was true in the Haditha massacre of 24 Iraqis, who were also originally reported as being killed by “insurgent activity” (i.e., IED). So the next time you see statistics, also reported by the American military, about the percentage of the deaths in Iraq which are caused by “insurgent activity,” keep these incidents in mind. Statistics only have validity when the underlying data is valid. When the underlying data is provided by the U.S. military, forget about it.

Out now!

Ethnic cleansing in Baghdad – Baghdad street becomes new Fallujah

Ethnic cleansing in Baghdad

Baghdad street becomes new Fallujah

The Australian

January 10, 2007

US and Iraqi troops, backed by American F-15 jet fighters and Apache attack helicopters, fought suspected insurgents for at least 12 hours in one of Baghdad’s most dangerous neighbourhoods in what may be a preview of expanded US operations in Iraq.

US and Iraqi officials said the assault on the Haifa Street neighbourhood rooted out an insurgent cell that controlled the area, but residents from the predominantly Sunni Muslim area and Sunni leaders said the American forces had been duped by Iraq’s Shia-dominated security forces into participating in a plan to drive Sunnis from the area.

On the eve of President George W. Bush’s announcement of a new war plan for Iraq, the conflicting versions underscored the difficulty US troops have in protecting civilians in this sprawling capital where Shiites and Sunnis are waging pitched battles for control of the neighbourhoods.

In the past several months, Shia militias have pushed into Sunni neighbourhoods, threatening residents with death if they don’t leave. Sunni residents have responded by arming themselves and welcoming protection from Iraq’s insurgents.

With Mr Bush expected to order additional troops to Baghdad in coming weeks, Sunni leaders have worried that US troops will end up helping the Shiites push them from their neighbourhoods.

US officials said Tuesday’s operation wasn’t aimed at any religious sect, but at insurgents who’ve controlled Haifa Street for months.

“It’s an area that needed to be brought back under Iraqi security control,” said Lieutenant Colonel Scott Bleichwehl, a US military spokesman. “There is a progression of missions that are ongoing. It’s not against any particular group or militia. Most of it is driven by the Iraqi government.”

Ali al-Dabaggh, a spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, said the assault was part of a government effort to reassert its authority in an area where insurgents had taken refuge with remnants of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party.

“This area must be cleansed,” he said at a joint news conference with Rear Admiral Mark Fox, a US military spokesman. “God willing, Haifa Street will not threaten Baghdad security anymore.”

Mr Al-Dabaggh said former Baathists in the area “provided safe haven and logistics for” terrorist groups trying to destabilise Iraq.

Rear Admiral Fox said the US military would support the Iraqi security forces. “Anyone who conducts activities outside the rule of law will be subject to the consequences,” he said.

Nearly 1000 US and Iraqi soldiers participated in Tuesday’s fighting. Fifty suspected insurgents were killed and 21 were arrested, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said. Three of those arrested were Syrian, the ministry said.

Planes and helicopters circled over the bullet-scarred buildings during the fighting, and gunfire and explosions echoed throughout central Baghdad.

Many Baghdad residents refer to Haifa Street as the capital’s “Fallujah,” a reference to the Sunni city in Anbar province that became a haven for al-Qa’ida in Iraq until US Marines retook it in a bloody assault in October 2005.

The street was handed over to Iraqi forces in February of last year in an effort to slowly place the capital under Iraqi control and pave the way for an American exit. But in the past few months the area became wracked by violence, and it remains one of the most heavily contested neighbourhoods in the capital’s sectarian battle. Nearly every day, bodies bearing signs of torture are found discarded along Haifa Street.

Sunni residents said the fighting in their neighbourhood began Saturday with clashes between Sunnis and Shiites soon after the Association of Muslim Scholars, the most influential Sunni group in Iraq, warned that militias would cleanse Baghdad of Sunnis in the coming days.

On Monday, the residents said, gunmen from the Mahdi Army militia of radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr pushed into the area, but were beaten back by armed Sunni residents protecting their homes.

At dawn on Tuesday, Iraqi troops began to surround the street and adjacent neighbourhoods, and residents said they took up arms to defend themselves against Shia-dominated forces.

But the residents said they soon realised that the troops were backed by Americans as the Iraqi forces blew in doors and raided homes. Gunmen ringed the roofs, residents said, and men were executed in the streets, three behind a Sunni mosque.

With the Iraqi forces being backed by Americans, the residents soon gave up the fight. They laid down their arms, opened their doors and waited, said Abu Mohammed, 47, a university lecturer who lives on Haifa Street. By 6 pm the troops pulled out and the neighbourhood was calm.

“What they wanted to do was hit us back,” said Mohammed, who asked not to be further identified for security reasons. “They went to the Americans and told them, `These are terrorists, and you must come with the government to detain them.’

“We are afraid that this quiet is the quiet before the storm,” he said.

The Association of Muslim Scholars called the assault “a bloody sectarian massacre.”

Muthana Harith al-Thari, a spokesman for the association, went on al-Jazeera television and read the names of 12 men who were killed.

“All of their guilt was that they defended their neighbourhood,” he said. “The American president said in 2003, `Mission accomplished.’ Now in 2007 he uses jetfighters a few meters from the Green Zone. This is defeat.”

The Iraqi Islamic Party, the largest Sunni political organisation in Iraq, also condemned the action.

Update on “Haifa Street” attack

Roads to Iraq

January 9, 2007

Please read:
Attack on “Haifa Street” Sunni neighborhoods

Before I post the update there is something very important you should now, so you can understand what’s going on:

“Haifa Street” is a very old neighborhood, there are many old houses and buildings kept preserved by former government as monuments, because they were build on the Iraqi traditional style, very narrow streets, and houses lean on each others [if you ever walked in the old Paris or Rome streets and suburbs you will understand what I mean].

The update:

Islamemo reporter in the area said:

Those who the government announced as killed in the operation [50], were gangs from “Mahdi Army” and not the residents of “Haifa Street” or Iraqi resistance, the proof of this is; most of the killed are outside the neighborhood

Resistance lost seven martyrs [buried immediately] and eight wounded, US forces and Iraqi militias are vanished right now from the area, but the resistance keep guarding the entrance of the neighborhood.

Another update from Al-Jazeera:

Few minutes ago Al-jazeera interviewed Al-Dhari head of the information in the Association of Muslim Scholars and he said:

The government forces and sectarian militias executed 12 young reprisals from the people of Haifa Street across the execution of 12 young men from the area.

Al-Arabiya TV confirmed this also with eyewitnesses

Haifa Baghdad Update

Here is the fact : 50 of pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian gunmen killed in day of fighting

Dozens of pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian gunmen killed in day of fighting as US forces team up with pro-Iranian sectarians to attack Baghdad neighborhoods and American and puppet forces begin new “Security Plan” targeting Sunni districts.

In a dispatch posted at 9:27pm Makkah time Tuesday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that contrary to claims made by the Iraqi puppet regime and echoed by western media, the gunmen killed in heavy fighting in Baghdad on Tuesday were for the most part not Resistance men or local Sunni defense fighters, but pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen allied with the US occupation forces.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported participants in the fighting who live in the area around Hayfa Street where the fighting took place as saying that only seven of the local Sunni neighborhood defenders were killed in the day’s fighting. Eight more of them were wounded.

Spokesmen for the puppet regime claimed that 50 Resistance fighters and Sunni neighborhood fighters had been killed, but witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that other than the seven local fighters, the remaining dozens of dead were all Jaysh al-Mahdi sectarian gunmen.

They pointed out that most of those died not on Hayfa Street, but were killed near the al-Bayruti Coffee House on at-Tala’i‘ Square near the notorious Buratha Mosque, a center used by Shi‘i sectarians to torture and murder Sunni Iraqis.

Shaykh Sabah al-Karakhi told Mafkarat al-Islam that it was believed likely that there would be renewed attacks on the predominantly Sunni area around Hayfa Street. Shaykh al-Karakhi said that the puppet “Prime Minister” Nuri al-Maliki “is using the sectarian militias to strike the Sunnis and the Resistance, since his own military forces can’t do it.”

The American Washington Post newspaper reported that US warplanes and helicopter gun ships attacked positions of the Iraqi Resistance around Hayfa Street as US troops backed up the assault carried out by pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian gunmen who are trying to purge sections of the Iraqi capital of Sunni residents in order to facilitate the partition of the country in keeping with Zionist and American plans.

For its part, the regional hegemonic regime in Iran is seeking to secure its hold in Iraq by using Shi‘i sectarian leaders and organizations. It hopes to step into the shoes of the American occupation authorities whose grip on the country has been weakened by three years of increasingly severe Resistance attacks. To forestall Iran’s attempt to replace America as colonial power in Iraq, the Iraqi Resistance continues its battle against pro-Iranian as well as US and pro-US groups and facilities.

In a dispatch posted at 12:59am Makkah time Wednesday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the puppet regime in Baghdad had launched its new “Security Plan” just minutes earlier – a plan it had announced several days earlier.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that massive cement barricades were set down, closing the streets of the occupied Iraqi capital. The whine of helicopters prowling the skies at low altitude could be heard all over the city.

Detachments made up of American occupation troops and Iraqi puppet forces – puppet police, army, and “Shock Troops” – together with pro-American Kurdish separatist Peshmergah gunmen and pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian gunmen were at that hour deploying throughout the streets.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in western Baghdad’s al-‘Amiriyah district reported that the Americans and their allies had sent a large force into that area. The same was taking place in the predominantly Sunni districts of al-A‘zamiyah, al-Ghazaliyah, al-Mansur, al-Fadl, the southern suburb of ad-Durah, and the neighborhoods of al-Jihad, al-‘Adl, al-Jami‘ah, Nafaq ash-Shurtah, as-Salikh, Bab al-Mu‘azzam, and elsewhere.

Resistance fighters attack puppet “Shock Troop” checkpoint in Baghdad late Tuesday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 5:50pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, Iraqi Resistance men had attacked a checkpoint manned by puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops” in the Baghdad district of al-Yarmuk.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a force of between 15 and 25 Resistance fighters assaulted the checkpoint located at petrol stations behind the Ibn Taymiyah Mosque. Witnesses reported that seven puppet “Shock Troops” were killed in the attack and four more of them wounded. One of those killed was a captain.

After the attack, US forces and Iraqi puppet police surrounded the area and began searching for the Resistance fighters who disappeared minutes after the assault taking the arms they found at the checkpoint with them.

Resistance blasts pro-Iranian sectarians with Katyusha rockets Tuesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 3:13pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces fired two Katyusha rockets into a headquarters of the pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in northern Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the Jaysh al-Mahdi headquarters set up in what was formerly the building of the Fifth Branch of the Intelligence Service in al-Kazimiyah took direct hits from two Katyusha rockets. The rockets inflicted heavy damage on the building, killing or wounding a large number of the pro-Iranian gunmen inside, judging from the fact that numerous ambulances came and went from the facility after the attack.

Resistance fighters ambush puppet “National Guard” column, killing seven.

In a dispatch posted at 3:15pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters mounted a violent attack on a column of puppet “Iraqi National Guard” troops in southern Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that Resistance men armed with medium machine guns and hand grenades assaulted a puppet “Guard” column on the highway to the southern suburb of ad-Durah. The witnesses reported that the intensity of the Resistance attack forced some of the vehicles in the column to flee. Two armored vehicles were unable to escape, however and all the puppet “Guards” aboard them – at least seven men – were killed.

Resistance fighters ambush US patrol in al-Ghazaliyah Tuesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 3:41pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters opened fire with RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenades on a US patrol in the western Baghdad district of al-Ghazaliyah Tuesday morning.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in the area as saying that the Resistance fighters opened up on the American patrol when it was on a bridge on the International Highway that runs by their area. They said that the attack set one American Humvee ablaze, killing or wounding all the US troops aboard.

Resistance disables two US Humvees Baghdad in lightning midnight attack in Baghdad.

In a dispatch posted at 3:04pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters ambushed a US patrol in the middle of Baghdad around midnight Monday-Tuesday.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a source in the Iraqi puppet police as saying that a group of Resistance fighters on foot staged a quick but violent attack on a US patrol in the al-Washshash area of central Baghdad. The Resistance men blasted the Ameicns with rockets, hand grenades, and medium machine gun fire and then left the area.

Eyewitnesses said that the Resistance men took the US troops by surprise, giving them no chance to respond adequately. That enabled them to disable two American Humvees and kill or wound several of the US troops, they noted.

PRESS RELEASE (SOUTH AFRICA) WAR ON SOMALIA MUST BE CONDEMNED

PRESS RELEASE: 10/01/07

The Muslim Judicial Council [MJC] and the Media Review Network [MRN], condemns the reckless invasion of Somalia by Ethiopia with the backing of the United States of America. This US- supported crime completely undermines the role of the UN and has once again exposed the US’s refusal to abide by internationally established policies.

Somalia : “Kill ’em all and let God sort ’em out” Boykin gets the boot

A devout evangelical Christian, he achieved notoriety in October 2003 when he was videotaped telling a church audience that the god of a Muslim warlord was “an idol” and that “my God was a real God.”

US Attacks Somalia, Taking Sides With Former Enemy Warlords

The United States has committed an act of war against Somalia (as Buzzflash noted), launching a gunship attack in pursuit of “suspected al Qaeda operatives.” Several people were killed when US planes “strafed the village of Hayo near the Kenyan border” and possibly the village of Ras Kamboni, the Guardian reports. It is highly unlikely that whole villages can be strafed without killing some innocent civilians. But then again, George W. Bush clearly operates on the principle of statecraft laid down by Josef Stalin: “When wood is chopped, chips fly.”

[Update: Civilians have indeed been killed, as the Guardian reports tonight:
Another air strike killed up to 31 people this morning near the town of Afmadow, 220 miles southwest of the capital, Mogadishu, according to local witnesses and officials…The Associated Press cited witnesses as saying 31 civilians, including two newlyweds, had been killed in the strike, by two US helicopter gunships. Reuters cited a local witness as saying between 22 and 27 people had been killed.]

They Never Learn: Somalia is Iraq writ small

The series of blunders and willful miscalculations that led to our present predicament in Iraq are now being replicated in Somalia, where a rather large U.S. footprint is being stamped into the hard Somali soil. Well, it isn’t a footprint, quite yet, but rather a series of bomb craters, where the lives of “many” civilians, according to news reports, have been summarily ended. U.S. bombing raids, ostensibly aimed at al-Qaeda fighters supposedly hidden among native Islamic militias, have succeeded in killing scores, albeit none of the three dudes we are allegedly after. That’s right: we’re bombing a country because we’re after a terrorist trio.

Somalia Strike: What this means for a region consumed by war and chaos. Will the US attacks escalate the conflict?

Probably, because of the number of civilians killed by the American missiles. More Somalis could join the ranks of the Islamists who have just suffered a defeat in their fight against the transitional government. The Americans and their regional allies will say that the operation was a “one off” because it was an opportunity to hit al-Qa’ida leaders in Somalia wanted for the 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. However, there is a danger that the Americans will intervene again and be dragged further into the quagmire – at a time when the Bush administration wants to concentrate on boosting the military in Iraq.

Ethnic cleansing in Baghdad – Baghdad street becomes new Fallujah

Fox News Anchor Calls Ted Kennedy A “Hostile Enemy Right Here On The Home Front

This morning on Fox News, anchor Gretchen Carlson called Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) a “hostile enemy” of the United States because he has demanded that Congress vote on whether to approve funding for escalation in Iraq.

What ever you think of Ted Kennedy, this demand for a vote about approving funds for this escalation is a very courageous and reasonable thing to do.

It will put every member of congress on record on this issue, and that’s something the American peope deserve.

Just remember: when logic can’t destroy an opposing point of view. many alleged “commentators” immediately turn to character assasination as a distraction from the real issue.

Media deception and the coming nuclear holocaust

Forty five years ago in October 1962, people watched in horror as the superpowers went to the brink of a global nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis when the Soviets attempted to place nuclear missiles in Cuba, to match U.S. deployments in Europe near the Soviet border. What followed next was nearly 30 years of constant fear of a nuclear holocaust. But 15 years after the fall of the Soviet Union the threat of a new nuclear disaster still remains.
