U.N. Officials Question Iraq’s “USA Puppet Govt” Rough Justice

Haider Rizvi

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 15 (IPS) – The U.S.-backed government in Baghdad is facing harsh criticism from the international community for ignoring calls to adopt a policy of restraint with regard to carrying out death sentences against the members of Iraq’s former ruling party.

Reacting to the hanging of Saddam Hussein’s two close aides Monday, senior U.N. officials and human rights organisations warned that the government must end its policy of executions, which they see as serious violation of international human rights standards.

“Those responsible for serious human rights violations must be brought to justice,” said Louise Arbour, the top U.N. official for human rights. “But to be credible and durable, the fight against impunity must be based on respect for international human rights standards.”

“The imposition of the death penalty after a trial and appeal proceedings that do not respect the principles of due process amounts to a violation of the right to life,” she said in a statement.

Hussein’s half-brother Awad Hamed Al-Bandar and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim Al-Tikriti were hanged early Monday morning despite calls from Arbour and others to commute their sentences.

Both Al-Bandar and Al-Tikriti were condemned to death for the killings of 148 Shias in 1982. Reports from Baghdad said Barzan’s hanging left behind a headless body, bloodied at the neck.

Arbour, who opposes the death penalty “under all circumstances”, said that in Al-Tikriti and Al-Bandar’s case, “not only is the penalty irredeemable, it may also make it more difficult to have a complete judicial accounting of other, equally horrendous, crimes committed in Iraq.”

Like Arbour, Ban Ki-moon, the new U.N. chief, seemed equally displeased with the Iraqi authorities’ decision.

“He fully regrets that despite pleas by the high commissioner, they were executed,” Ban’s spokesperson Michele Montas told reporters. Clarifying his views on Hussein’s execution, Ban said last week he believed that life “is precious” and that it must be “protected and respected”.

Noting that international law affirms these values, the U.N. secretary-general said he recognised the “growing trend in international law and national practice towards phasing out the death penalty.”

While Ban and other U.N. officials chose to confine their criticism of the executions to Iraqi authorities, rights activists said the U.S. government must be held equally accountable.

“If the international community is to restore confidence in the rule of law in Iraq, it must prosecute the individuals for the international crime of aggression against the Iraqi people,” said Dr. Curtis Doebbler, an international human rights lawyer.

In Doebbler’s view, only by calling for such prosecutions can the international community restore trust in the rule of law. “Failure to do so,” he cautioned, “will send a clear message to vulnerable people everywhere who have been subjected to U.S. aggression that they cannot depend on the rule of law to stop the U.S. and its collaborators from violating their most basic human rights.”

Speaking to reporters in Egypt, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended the executions by saying that it was an “Iraqi process”. However, she expressed her displeasure with the way the executions were actually carried out. “We were disappointed there was not greater dignity given to the accused under these circumstances,” she said.

Deploring the executions in strong words, the London-based human rights watchdog group Amnesty International said such actions were nothing but “a further slide into the errors of the past.”

The group said the Iraqi court failed to meet international standards for a fair trial and raised serious questions about its impartiality and ability to assert independence from political intervention.

During the trial of Hussein and his aides, many believe that authorities forced the first presiding judge to step down and blocked the other’s appointment while failing to ensure protection for witnesses as well as defence lawyers, three of whom were assassinated during the course of the trial.

Amnesty also noted that Hussein was denied access to legal counsel for the first year after his arrest, and said the appeals process was conducted in “haste and failed to rectify any of flaws of the first trial.”

In addition to Monday’s executions, rights groups expressed concern about the possibility of a death sentence for Taha Yassin Ramadhan, the former vice president. Though already sentenced to life imprisonment, he is likely to face another trial.

Reports from Baghdad said the hangings took place in the same building in the city where Hussein was executed on Dec. 30 and that the bodies of Al-Bandar and Al-Tikriti were flown to their ancestral town of Tikrit for burial.

According to Amnesty International, the use of death penalty has been on the rise in Iraq since its reintroduction inn August 2004. Last year, at least 65 people were executed, many of them after u

Good Morning, Baghdad! Two Hangings, One Decapitation Before Breakfast

Public barbarity reached yet another new low this morning — even for occupied Iraq — when two of Saddam Hussein’s former aides were hanged before dawn in Baghdad, one of them losing his head in the process.

Like John Kerry’s dumb joke, the American media have already decided for us — the hanging was “botched”. Reuters are packaging Jonathan Wright’s piece from Cairo under the heading:

Botched hanging in Iraq arouses Arab suspicions

and it leads with the “official version”:

The botched hanging of Saddam Hussein’s half-brother Barzan on Monday aroused Arab suspicions of foul play and malice, deepening the divide between the Iraqi government and Arabs in other countries.
The noose pulled off Barzan al-Tikriti’s head as he fell from the gallows, suggesting that the hangman had misjudged the length of rope needed just to break his neck.
Government spokesman Ali Dabbagh said there was no “violation of procedure” in the hanging of Barzan and fellow convict Awad Hamed al-Bander, Saddam’s former chief judge, for crimes against humanity over the killings of 148 Shi’ites.

but if you keep reading you can see that the “Arab street” doesn’t buy the official version at all.

from Morocco to Yemen, ordinary Arabs cast doubt on the official explanation. Some recalled the chaotic and abusive treatment of Saddam Hussein when he was hanged on December 30.
Zaid al-Boudani, a shopkeeper in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, said: “I am very sad today, as many other Muslim Arabs are. This execution is part of the revenge campaign going on in Iraq. The way his head was ripped off shows hatred and revenge.”
The president of Morocco’s Human Rights Center described the hangings as a barbaric and vengeful act carried out under external pressure, probably from Iran and the United States.
“We had never heard that the head of a hanged person was ripped from his body, only in this case, which mirrors the hatred and violence,” said the president, Khaled Charkaoui.

Wright provides more details of Arab reaction later in the article:

Issam Ghazzawi, a Jordanian lawyer who saw Barzan on Friday, said he was convinced the decapitation was deliberate.
“His head was cut off after he was hanged to mutilate his body in […] a barbaric act of revenge that is against any human values and is vigilante justice by a group of thugs,” he said.

Qassim Abdul-Zahra of the Associated Press, reporting from Baghdad via the Toronto Star, says reaction inside the occupied country is equally skeptical:

Khalaf al-Olayan, a leader of the main Sunni bloc in parliament, demanded to see any video taken during the execution.
“It is impossible for a person to be decapitated during a hanging,” he told Al-Jazeera television. “This shows that they (the government) have mutilated the body and this is a violation of the law.”
“We want to see the video that was taken during the execution of the two men in order for them (government) to prove what they are saying,” he added.

Qassim Abdul-Zahra adds:

The two men were to have been hanged along with Saddam, but Iraqi authorities decided to execute the former dictator alone on what National Security Adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie called a “special day.”

Oh, yes! Very special, indeed!

And now we have two special days to recall with extreme fondness, as one wave of barbaric carnage follows another. The daily death toll barely warrants a mention:

At least 78 people were reported killed or found dead on Sunday, including 41 bullet-riddled bodies discovered in Baghdad. The U.S. military also said two American soldiers died Sunday from roadside bombs in Baghdad.

Christians and Zion: British stirrings

Part 1 in a series of 5 articles on Christian Zionism:

Donald Wagner

10/09/03 (Daily Star) The British have had a long-term fascination with the idea of Israel and its central role in biblical prophecy that dates back to their earliest recorded literature. The Epistle of Gildas (circa. 6th century AD) and the Venerable Bede’s Ecclesiastical History (735 AD) both saw the British as “the new Israel,” God’s chosen people, who were destined to play a strategic role despite repeated invasions by their Nordic neighbors. In the British perception of being an elect, these battles were understood in the context of Israel’s battles against the Philistines, Babylonians and others.

A clear resurgence of such themes was evident in the 16th century, perhaps influenced by the Protestant Reformation and its emphasis on the Bible and varied interpretations of its texts, now that Rome had lost its control over the new clergy and theologians. One of the early expressions of fascination with the idea of Israel was the monograph Apocalypsis Apocalypseos, written by Anglican clergyman Thomas Brightman in 1585. Brightman urged the British people to support the return of the Jews to Palestine in order to hasten a series of prophetic events that would culminate in the return of Jesus.

In 1621, a prominent member of the British Parliament, attorney Henry Finch, advanced a similar perspective when he wrote: “The (Jews) shall repair to their own country, shall inherit all of the land as before, shall live in safety, and shall continue in it forever.” Finch argued that based on his interpretation of Genesis 12:3, God would bless those nations that supported the Jews’ return. However, his idea did not find support from fellow legislators.

While these writers cannot be classified as Christian Zionists, they might be viewed as proto-Christian Zionists, as they prepared the way for those who would follow. Gradually their views receded, but the turbulence following the American and French revolutions provoked significant feelings of insecurity across Europe. As the anxiety rose in the run-up to the centennial year at the beginning of the 19th century, prophetic speculation concerning Jesus’ return and related events was in the air.

During the decade that followed the year 1800, several Christian writers and preachers began to reflect on the events leading to Jesus’ would-be imminent return, among them Louis Way, an Anglican clergyman. Way taught that it was necessary for the Jews to return to Palestine as the first stage prior to the Messianic Age, and he offered speculation as to the timing of Jesus’ second coming. Within a short period of time, Way gained a wide readership through his journal The Jewish Expositor, and counted many clergymen, academics and the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge as subscribers.

A number of influential proto-Christian Zionists emerged in the generation that followed Way. John Nelson Darby (1800-81), a renegade Irish Anglican priest, added several unique features to Way’s teachings, including the doctrine of “the Rapture,” whereby “born again Christians” would be literally removed from history and transferred to heaven prior to Jesus’ return. Darby also placed a restored Israel at the center of his theology, claiming that an actual Jewish state called Israel would become the central instrument for God to fulfill His plans during the last days of history. Only true (“born again”) Christians would be removed from history prior to the final battle of Armageddon through the Rapture based on his literal interpretation of 1 Thessalonians 4:16.

Darby’s extensive writings and 60-year career as a missionary consolidated a form of fundamentalism called “premillennialism” (Jesus would return prior to the Battle of Armageddon and his millennial rule on earth). Darby made six missionary journeys to North America, where he became a popular teacher and preacher. The premillennial theology and its influence on Christian fundamentalism and the emerging evangelical movement in the United States can be directly traced to Darby’s influence.

Christian Zionism is the direct product of this unusual and recent Western form of Protestant theology. Found primarily in North America and England, it is now exported around the globe via satellite television, the internet, best-selling novels such as the Left Behind series, films and a new breed of missionaries. These unique doctrines were found among fringe movements in Christianity throughout the ages, which most Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant churches regarded as extreme and marginal, if not heretical.
One of the influential British social reformers to be influenced by premillennial theology was Lord Shaftesbury, a conservative evangelical Christian who was intimately linked to leading members of the British Parliament. In 1839, Shaftesbury published an essay in the distinguished literary journal the Quarterly Review, titled “The State and Restoration of the Jews,” where he argued: “(T)he Jews must be encouraged to return (to Palestine) in yet greater numbers and become once more the husbandman of Judea and Galilee.” Writing 57 years before Zionist thinkers Max Nordau, Israel Zangwill and Theodor Herzl popularized the phrase, Shaftesbury called the Jews “a people with no country for a country with no people.” The saying was curiously similar to that of the early Zionists, who described Palestine as “a land of no people for a people with no land.” Gradually, Shaftesbury’s views gained acceptance among British journalists, clergy and politicians.

One of the most important figures in the development of Christian Zionism was the Anglican chaplain in Vienna during the 1880s, William Hechler, who became an acquaintance of Herzl. Hechler saw Herzl and the Zionist project as ordained by God in order to fulfill the prophetic scriptures. He used his extensive political connections to assist the Zionist leader in his quest for an international sponsor of the Zionist project. Hechler arranged meetings with the Ottoman sultan and the German kaiser, but it was his indirect contacts with the British elite that led to a meeting with the politician Arthur Balfour. That meeting in 1905 would eventually lead to Balfour’s November 1917 declaration on a Jewish homeland, which brought the Zionists their initial international legitimacy. Balfour’s keen interest in Zionism was prepared at least in part by his Sunday school faith, a case put forth by Balfour’s biographer and niece, Blanch Dugdale.

Then-British Prime Minister David Lloyd-George was perhaps even more predisposed to the Zionist ideology than Balfour. Journalist Christopher Sykes (son of Mark Sykes, co-author of the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916), noted in his volume Two Studies in Virtue that Lloyd-George’s political advisers were unable to train his mind on the map of Palestine during negotiations prior to the Treaty of Versailles, due to his training by fundamentalist Christian parents and churches on the geography of ancient Israel. Lloyd-George admitted that he was far more familiar with the cities and regions of Biblical Israel than with the geography of his native Wales or of England itself.

British imperial designs were undoubtedly the primary political motivation in drawing influential British politicians to support the Zionist project. However, it is clear that the latter were predisposed to Zionism and to enthusiastically supporting the proposals of Herzl and leading Zionist officials such as Chaim Weizmann due to their Christian Zionist backgrounds. Balfour’s famous speech of 1919 makes the point: “For in Palestine we do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country…The four great powers are committed to Zionism, and Zionism, be it right or wrong, good or bad, is rooted in age-long traditions, in present needs, in future hopes, of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land.”

The phrases “rooted in age-long traditions” and “future hopes” were perhaps grounded in Balfour’s British imperial vision, but they were also buttressed by his understanding of Bible prophecy, which undergirded his bias toward the Zionist project as well as his grand designs for Britain’s colonialist policy.

Donald Wagner is professor of religion and Middle Eastern studies at North Park University in Chicago and executive director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He wrote this commentary, the first of five on Christian Zionism running this week, for THE DAILY STAR

The sick mindset that breeds Islamophobia

Zachariah Anani

From Pope’s anti-Islam comments to Church signs saying, “You must remember, Islam is the enemy,” and “The Koran needs to be flushed,” a Church in west Windsor, Canada, came out in its true colors with publicly promoting anti-Islam hatred. On January 11, 2007, Campbell Baptist Church organized a lecture of a purported former Muslim terrorist, Zachariah Anani, to warn the public that Islam is a religion of war being brought to Canadian soil.

Donald McKay, senior pastor at the church, said the event was organized simply to propagate what the church believes to be “absolute truth.” So the “absolute truth” which the Church decided to propagate through Anani’s lecture, entitled The Deadly Threat of Islam, is that Islam teaches nothing less than the “ambushing, seizing and slaying” of non-believers especially Jews and Christians.[1]

According to Donald McKay, “We have no desire to be offensive. We have no desire to polarize people unnecessarily,” it is, in his words, the Islamic faith that is “oppressive” and “vicious.”[2]

It also shows that Anani was used as a puppet to validate and propagate which was already on the mind of the guardians of Campbell Baptist Church. Anani’s words reflected the mindset. He described Muslims worshipping a god who “fights and kills” and “strikes with terror,” and allows no prisoners in battles against non-believers.[3]

An interesting point to note is the background of Mr. Anani, who, in McKay’s words, killed “hundreds of people in the name of Allah” before converting to Christianity.

An interesting point to note is none of these anti-Islam hate campaigners base their argument in logic and reason. Lies upon lies on the religious and political fronts reign supreme these days. Opportunists puppets, such as Musharraf, Karzai and a host of others are serving the purpose of Islamophobes on the political front. Whereas, persons like Anani are helping Islamophobes on the religious front to give Islamophobes an opportunity to vent their hatred and poison minds against Muslims an Islam.

One can judge value of this anti-Islam, fear mongering work from the not so secret background of persons like Anani. Here are some of his major claims.

Zachariah Anani claims to be a former Muslim, who joined one of the many military groups in Lebanon when he was 13. Anani claims that he was “trained to fight and kill Jews, and to hate Christians and Americans,” which he now blames on Islam.[4]

He claims to have killed 223 people in the name of Islam and gained points from his former militia for doing so. But the claim to dosing so in the name of Islam loses its value when he claims to also have shot and killed a Muslim for trying to make him get up for Fajr prayer.[5] Did he do that for Islam as well?

As for his knowledge of Islam is concerned, he claims that while he lived in Lebanon, Muslim leaders called him to the local mosque and interrogated him. He admits that the imam asked intelligent questions, and Anani felt the inadequacy of his own answers. “I knew nothing about Islam, nothing about Christianity,” he is quoted as saying.[6]

Despite this, he actually claims to know Islam intimately and the church leaders see him fit to spew venom against Muslims and Islam as an authoritative figure. This speaks volumes of the sick mindset of not only Mr. Anani, but of his promoters as well.

This is a fine example of how collaboration of people with sick mindset are leading the pack of Islamophobes. Their work becomes very effective in an environment in which according to today’s Toronto Sun, a Leger Marketing poll commissioned by Sun Media, half of the Canadians admitted to at least being slightly racist[7] not to speak of the anti-Muslim bias in the post-9/11 era.

Such words and deeds of inciting hatred should have been seriously condemned and officially brought to account. But unfortunately, the same mindset prevails. It is only the matter of opportunity to bring it out of the closet under one or another cover. The chances of peaceful co-existence are getting bleaker and the chance for a far more serious bloodbath in the Muslim world are increasing as President Bush deploys additional 20,000 troops to Baghdad, attacks Iranian offices and officials in Iraq, orders carrier battle groups to Gulf and annihilates Somalia, the poorest country in the world in an unreported military invasion and occupation. All within a week!!!.

It is obvious that the Church and State alliance is threatening the future of humanity. Besides churches of various denominations playing their own particular role, on the political front, whatever may be the human or material cost, Bush and company are not in a position to lose what they have stated with operation 9/11 and the subsequent invasions based on lies. Welcome to 2007. Fasten your seatbelts gentlemen.

The question is: Why doesn’t the media report these subtleties that we point out. Gore Vidal has the answer: “The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity – much less dissent.”

Abid Ullah Jan’s latest book, “The Ultimate Tragedy” was released in December 2006.

MP SEEKS PROBE OF ZACHARIAH ‘TERRORIST’ ANANI LECTURER

Windsor Star, 01/15/07

Dale Molnar

Immigration officials must investigate how professed former terrorist Zachariah Anani got into the country and obtained Canadian citizenship, says Windsor West MP Brian Masse.

“Mr. Anani claims he was a terrorist. That’s his background. He also became a Canadian citizen, so we’ll be investigating to find out whether or not that information was provided at the time,” Masse said following a news
conference Saturday by members of Windsor’s Muslim community in response to Anani’s anti-Islamic lecture series at Campbell Baptist Church.

Anani angered local Muslims when he used passages from the Qur’an during his first lecture Jan. 11 to support his view that Islam preaches violence.

Masse said he is going to ask for a ministerial review of Anani’s citizenship and 1996 claim for refugee status…

As well, members of the Windsor Islamic Association have filed a formal complaint with the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

CAIR has sent letters to Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant asking for a prompt investigation into Anani’s lectures under Canada’s hate crime legislation.

It also sent a letter to the Windsor police Street Crimes Branch requesting officers attend Anani’s remaining lectures to monitor them for breaches of the legislation. Two plainclothes officers were at the first lecture…

Misreading The Enemy

The president cannot seem to let go of his fixation on Al-Qaida, a minor actor in Iraq, and his determination to confront Iran and Syria. He still assumes that the insurgents are outsiders to their neighborhoods and that U.S. troops can chase away the miscreants and keep them out, acting as a sort of neighborhood watch in khaki. In fact, Iraq’s Sunni Arab elite is playing the spoiler, and until a deal is negotiated with its members, no one will be allowed to enjoy the new Iraq.
