Somalia slips ever backwards

Hundreds of civilians have died in fighting in Mogadishu – further proof that last year’s US-backed Ethiopian invasion did more harm than good.

Predictions that the US-backed Ethiopian invasion of Somalia last Christmas would hasten rather than halt the country’s political disintegration are proving grimly accurate. In the league of failed states, Somalia is runaway leader. With international attention focused on Zimbabwe and Darfur, it is the hidden shame of the world.

More than 1,000 civilians have been killed or wounded in recent fighting in the capital, Mogadishu, and tens of thousands have fled their homes. The UN says wounded civilians are lying untended in the streets after heavy artillery and mortars pounded residential areas. Since February, 96,000 refugees have swelled the ranks of Somalia’s 400,000 internally displaced persons. And despite a temporary truce today, it seems likely that worse is to come.

400 Die in Mogadishu’s Worst Fighting in 15 years

Ethiopian tanks, artillery and helicopter gunships have fought against guerillas armed with machine guns, missiles and rocket-propelled grenades. The guerrilla forces comprise fighters allied to the Somali Council of Islamic Courts and clan militias who are opposed to the transitional government and the Ethiopian occupation.

Clashes in Somalia kill 381 in 4 days

Four days of fierce fighting between Ethiopian-backed government forces and Islamic insurgents has killed 381 people, a local human rights organization said Monday, as the government warned residents to abandon their homes ahead of a new military offensive.

Tall ‘Afar.

Shi‘i Turkoman Council in al-Mawsil says Kurdish parties carried out 27 March bombings of civilians in Tall ‘Afar, sparking “retaliatory” massacre later that night.

In a dispatch posted at p12:11pm Baghdad time midday Monday, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that the Shi‘i Turkoman Council, one of the more important Turkoman parties in al-Mawsil, has issued a statement blaming the pro-American Kurdish separatists leadership for carrying out the bombings of civilian targets in Tall ‘Afar on Tuesday, 27 March. Those bombings killed some 70 people and prompted pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarians to massacre over 70 Sunnis in “reprisal.”

AMSI reported the Turkoman Shi‘i Council as saying that the bombings served the interests of the Kurdish movement that aspires to steal what it called the “Turkoman area” of Tall ‘Afar.

Demonstrators who took to the streets after the Tuesday bombings placed blame for the atrocities directly on the Kurdish separatist leaders and their American military backers, saying that it was they who let the explosives-laden truck to pass and then detonated it by remote control – maintaining that there was no “suicide driver” as the news media widely reported.

The Turkoman statement denounced the Kurdish separatist militia, the Peshmergah, saying that Peshmergah gunmen prevented puppet police from stopping and inspecting the truck bomb.

The Council also denounced the fact that some Shi‘i parties were ignoring testimony about this evidence out of partisan motives.

Madison, WI (PRWEB) March 30, 2007 – Some members of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, a non-partisan organization of students, experts and scholars dedicated to exposing falsehoods and revealing truths about 9/11, have filed complaints against the National Institute of Standards and Technology for legal defects in its studies of events of 9/11 involving the Twin Towers and Building 7. James H. Fetzer, the society’s founder, believes these actions have the potential to break the back of the cover-up that has enveloped these events.

“It would be nice if the government would tell us the truth about our own history,” Fetzer said. “But all we get from the President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State and former Secretary of Defense is a ‘song and dance’ that keeps the American people in ignorance.” The complaints have been filed by Ed Hass, who edits The Muckraker Report; Morgan Reynolds, past Chief Economist in the Department of Labor in the Bush administration; and Judy Wood, former professor of mechanical engineering at Clemson University. Reynolds and Wood are both members of the society.

UK Issued Two Different Coordinates for Gulf Incident

The UK Ministry of Defence website still contains their widely quoted press release, issued on the 28th March, which attempts to clearly establish that the arrest of the fifteen British sailors and marines by Iran took place in Iraqi waters.

Unfortunately for the MOD, it appears that they have used two different sets of position coordinates to fix the site of the incident. One of these coordinates is quoted in the text (para 4), another is pictured in their photograph taken from a helicoptor. Furthermore, the data was presented in the same press briefing. Assuming that both sets of data were expressed using the same coordinate system this is, at the least, an embarrassing over sight.

It can be observed that the coordinates on the Garmin GPS handset photo on the MOD site are different from the coordinates quoted in the text of the same press release (N 29 50.174 vs. N 2950.36 and E 48 43.544 vs. E 48 43.08).

Government And Citizenship

When violence is the first resort of a government, the people have no business referring to it as a democratic republic. They must offer resistance to it. They must bring it into line with the values and code of ethics of the citizenry.

Even Mormons Jumping Off Bush Bandwagon As War Takes Its Toll

Iraq is lost militarily and politically. Even the Mormons are now abandoning President George W. Bush’s mad war. That’s akin to the Swiss Guard deserting and leaving the pope to fend for himself with the Vatican under siege.

AMSI: The Iraqi Resistance Defeated the Occupation in Iraq

The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI) issued an open letter addressed to the great Iraqi people on 29 Safar 1428 – 19 March 2007 on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the Anglo-American occupation of Iraq.

“American project is bankrupted in Iraq and the victory is very near” told in the letter.

We want to remind you of quotations from some senior members of CIA in a program “Hidden Wars of CIA” in an Arab Channel. They told: “We were ordered to kill women, children and businessmen to spread terror among them in Vietnam war!!!”

This is the reality…

Jenin Massacres, 5th Anniversary

As part of the Palestinian history, Jenin had a role in the national struggle starting with the Romans and ending with the Zionist occupation.

Israel has exploited the situation and atmosphere created after September 11 to intensify its aggression against Palestinians in general and those of Jenin in Particular. Thus, remorseless massacre committed in Jenin in front of the whole world targeted everything even trees and houses, causing many dead and a few wounded, so what does this mean?

The Once and Future Republic of Vermont

Vermont was once an independent republic, and it can be one again. We think the time to make that happen is now. Over the past 50 years, the U.S. government has grown too big, too corrupt and too aggressive toward the world, toward its own citizens and toward local democratic institutions
