Bisakah Tiada Dusta diantara Kita [2]

[jawaban untul Ulil Abshar bagian Kedua]

Ulil Perlu Menoleh Ku Klux Klan

Bacalah The New Anti-Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice (Oxford University Press, 2003) yang ditulis Philip Jenkins, profesor sejarah dan studi agama dari Pennsylvania State University.

Pada 1940-an dan 1950-an, terjadi perubahan.

Iklan serupa ditemukan di The Washington Post dan The Chicago Tribune.

Subject: [INSISTS] Ahmadiyah, Ulil Versus Amran

Bisakah Tiada Dusta Diantara Kita (1)

[jawaban untul Ulil Abshar bagian pertama]

Pengantar

The Presidency of George W.Bush (Free Press, 2007).

Alasan pertama, jelas salahnya.

Muhammad Zafrullah Khan pernah menjadi Menteri Luar Negeri. Marsekal Zafar Chaudhry menjabat Kepala Staf Angkatan Udara, dan Jenderal Abdul Malik menjadi panglima pasukan Pakistan dalam perang melawan India pada 1965. Lalu, Naseer Ahmad Faruqi, menjabat Ketua Komisi Pemilihan Pakistan 1991.

Di Mesir tampil Ikhwanul Muslimin (the Muslim Brotherhood).

Islam Grows Into a Strong Presence in America

by James Dretke

This article first appeared in the News Watch column of Volume 23 / Number 4 / 2001 issue of the Christian Research Journal. For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org/publ/

We welcome Islam in America. It enriches our country with Islam’s teachings of self-discipline, compassion, and commitment to family. It deepens America’s respect for Muslims here at home and around the world.1

Today, Muslim Americans are a cornerstone of our American community. They enrich our political and cultural life; they provide leadership in every field of human endeavor, from business to medicine, to scholarship.2

These public pronouncements of President Clinton to Muslim Americans are indicative of how Islam has become established as a major religion in America. For most of America’s history, Islam had been a marginal presence. Muslims were mostly foreign nationals or resident aliens, with only a few naturalized United States citizens, and even fewer second or third generation Americans. Christian churches relegated evangelism of Muslims to foreign missions. The typical American Christian rarely, if ever, encountered a religiously active Muslim. Now, however, Islam is a noticeable religious force in America. Christians need to be as knowledgeable of Islam’s presence as they are of any other religion in America.

Islam is no passing fad, and it is growing quickly in America. American Muslim leaders are quite open about their hopes and dreams. In an editorial entitled “Time to Make an Imprint,” Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi writes: “North America needs our contribution, and it is up to us to make an imprint in founding a truly Islamic civilization on this continent.”3

Very few Americans lack an opinion about Islam. There are numerous views concerning the religion, many not favorable. “According to a recent Roper Poll, 50% of those polled believed all Muslims to be inherently anti-American. Today, the bywords of the relationship between the Muslim and the Judeo-Christian worlds are alienation and suspicion.”4 Carl Ellis, a noted African-American Christian leader, asserts that Islam “is the most serious threat to the church in America.”5

Muslim Influence. Just how influential is the Islamic community in America? Since September 1999, Muslims have conducted Friday congregational prayers inside the U.S. Capitol building. American Muslim opposition to a Burger King restaurant opened in the West Bank in Israel caused the corporation to close it down. The United States military has tripled the number of Muslim chaplains in its ranks (serving more than 4,000 Muslim members of the military). Amazon.com changed a video review (of the movie Not without My Daughter) in response to Muslim complaints.6 In 1999 Georgetown University began a three-year project “to document the impact of Muslim Americans on the American horizon.”7

Islamic Horizons, one of the most influential Muslim journals in America with a distribution of more than 60,000,8 asserted in the article “Why Muslim Americans Need to Vote” that “Muslim Americans have power and its accompanying responsibility. We represent $75 billion of collective annual income, more than any Muslim country can produce.”9 This same issue relates how Muslim American complaints about a CNN online posting referring to Jerusalem as “the capital of Israel” prompted CNN to make appropriate changes quickly.10

The growing presence of Muslim Americans has not been lost on politicians either. For example, in New Jersey (home to an estimated 400,000 Muslims), former Governor Christine Todd Whitman signed a bill making New Jersey “the first state to enact a law ensuring the authenticity of Halal food.”11 Two Muslim Americans made history by delivering the benedictions on the first day of both the Democratic and Republican national conventions this past year.12 Also in 2000, Congress called on the United States Postal Service to issue a postal stamp commemorating the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Muslim Population and Growth. Is Islam the fastest growing religion in the world? Is it the fastest growing religion in America? The demographics tell us that the answer is yes to both questions.

Establishing population demographics for Muslims is not easy. Even without completely accurate statistics, we find numerous independent studies in fairly close agreement. Most major studies estimate a worldwide Muslim population for the year 2000 at roughly 1.25 billion people; that is, about one-fifth or 20 percent of the world’s population.13 In comparison, Christianity is the largest religion in the world with about 33 percent of the world’s population.14

According to most reports, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.15 For example, in Europe, according to United Nations statistics, between 1989 and 1998 the Islamic population grew by more than 100 percent (to about 14 million or 2 percent of the population).16 At the current rate of growth it is estimated that Islam’s population by the year 2025 will be 1.9 billion (about 24 percent of the total European population).17

One of the most common misconceptions or stereotypes Westerners have about Muslims is that most of them are Arabic. “The major sections of Muslim populations are concentrated in Asia and Africa. Muslims are, by and large, people of color.”18 Missiologist Roland Miller relates that more than 68 percent of all Muslims live in Asia and more than 27 percent live in Africa. Indonesia has roughly 15 percent of the world’s Muslim population. In South Asia almost one-third of the world’s Muslim population live in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India.19

Just how is the Muslim population growing? The growth rate of Islam in Western nations (including the US and Canada) primarily comes through: a high Muslim birth rate and immigration (e.g., Muslims moving to the United States), not from converts (non-Muslims becoming Muslims). As we shall soon note in regard to converts, however, two groups are vulnerable to Muslim evangelism.

In 1995 there were some 4 million Muslims in France, 1.9 million in Germany, and 1.5 million in the UK, accounting for 7 percent, 2.4 percent, and 2.7 percent of the overall populations respectively. In 1998 7 percent of babies born within the European Union were Muslim, in Brussels it was as much as 57 percent….This growth comes primarily through immigration and a high birth rate.20

It is difficult to estimate accurately the total number of Muslims in the United States and the rest of North America. Research scientist Carol Stone states that “it is still unclear how many Muslims currently reside in America…because of a lack of reliable information about Muslims in this country.”21

There are several main reasons why this is so. First, for the past 50 years the United States government (unlike some countries) has not included questions about religious affiliation in its census.22 Dr. James Dretke, executive director of the Zwemer Institute, states that a second factor “is the fact that Muslims do not join mosques as Christians join churches, so it is impossible to count them from membership rolls.”23 Roland Miller gives a third reason: “Religious statistics are notoriously difficult to compile because of affiliation questions and reporting problems. Muslim statisticians routinely give higher figures.”24

Nevertheless, both Christian and Muslim sources assert that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States.25 The Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches 2000 gives the figure of 3,950,000 Muslims in America today.26 Islamic Horizons states that there are eight to ten million Muslims in North America.27 The most common figure cited (the statistic the United States government regularly uses) is about six million.28 The largest concentrations of Muslims are in California, New York, and Illinois — with an estimated 400,000 in the Chicago area.29

While specific figures may be debated, what cannot be debated is the phenomenal growth of Islam. According to United Nations statistics, the Muslim population in the United States grew by 25 percent between 1989 and 1998.30 In 1990 there were only about 50 Islamic schools in America. Today the number is over 200.31 Since about 1990 the number of “registered Islamic centers and mosques” has tripled to “more than 2,500.”32

Factors for Growth. In the book, The Muslims of America, Prof. Yvonne Haddad addresses the main factors in Islam’s growth in the U.S.: “The dramatic growth of the Muslim community in the United States is a recent phenomenon, taking place primarily over the last three decades in response to changes in American immigration laws and the demands of the labor market.”33 Islamic Horizons echoes this assertion: “The Muslims of North America proudly flaunt the fact that they are a people with a population over eight million and growing.…These figures do not, however, highlight the fact that a vast majority of these eight million are Muslims who either came to this continent after the 1960’s or are reverts [i.e., people who return to their former Muslim beliefs].”34

Again, conversion has not been the major factor in Islam’s growth, with two major exceptions. The first is given by Wendy Zoba in a Christianity Today cover story entitled “Islam, U.S.A”: “Islam is gaining most of its U.S. converts in prisons and on university campuses. The majority of American converts to Islam — 85 to 90 percent — are black.”35 In addition, the number of American women who marry Muslim men and convert is estimated to be about 7000 per year.36

African-Americans make up an estimated 42 to 45 percent of the Muslims in America.37 Carl Ellis places the actual number of African-American Muslims at 2.6 million. Of these, only 18,000 to 20,000 are members of Louis Farrakhan’s organization, the Nation of Islam.38

Christians may wish they could say that Islam and Christianity were two complementary faiths; two alternate paths to salvation. In reality, their foundational teachings are diametrically opposed.39 For Muslims “it is an article of faith that Islam is guidance for humanity,”40 and they are commanded to do all they can to spread their faith. Islam denies the Trinity, the deity of Christ, his death on the cross for our sins, and salvation by grace.

James Dretke expresses the Christian attitude very well: “For Christians who take seriously Jesus’ Great Commission in Matthew 28:18–20, it is a great thrill to see so many Muslims on our doorsteps. While we cannot easily gain entry into their countries…God has brought them to ours.”41

What Do a Renowned 9/11 Physicist and a N.Y. Times Best Selling Novelist Have in Common? Harassment by Dis-Information?

by Bill Douglas

January 10, 2008 at 15:10:18

In the last 48 hours, N.Y. Times best selling novelist, Steve Alten, author of, “The Shell Game,” was recently shocked and dumbfounded that he’d become the victim of harassment, when someone not only put a map of his home and his personal private phone number and home address up on the internet, . . . but also either remotely accessed or intercepted personal private email between he and his publicist . . .

. . . and all because of the impending release of his new novel, “The Shell Game.” http://theshellgame.net/ (See 9/11 truth links in the “911 Links” section of his site, to learn why this impending block buster novel may be causing such actions).

Having been a patriotic citizen working to expose the deceptions leading us to war, I’d personally become fascinated with Alten’s new novel, “The Shell Game.” I’d contacted him through his website after a high school English teacher told me about “The Shell Game,” because it dealt with oil, war, and deceptions leading us to war.

So, when I learned this novelist had become increasingly a victim of bizarre harassment, I suspected “why” this may have happened, and then decided it might be instructive to explain it to others. So I wrote this oped this morning. For this, in my opinion, represents yet another event in the chronology of a movement for truth that has been attacked and maligned for years now.

For the novelist who wrote, “The Shell Game,” it’s just a bizarre experience, for he’s just trying to write a good novel, and from his perspective, well if it happens to spur discussion of important issues, well that’s about as American as apple pie.

I think most people will think, if this novel has caused him to be targeted for such harassment, even before its release . . . well, it must have something “very interesting” to say. And in my opinion it does. http://theshellgame.net/

However, the bizarre harassment of this best selling author, from my perspective, is part of a long time pattern of harassment that those of us who’ve been working along side the 9/11 families who have demanded a new independent 9/11 investigation, have experienced over and over again. Even the Jersey Girls, the 9/11 widows who fought Washington to get the 9/11 Commission, were victims of it when Anne Coulter said they enjoyed their husband’s deaths.

This best selling novelist may have set off to only write a good novel, but it has cast him into a world of intrigue and duplicity that many good people have lived in for years now.

So who does this story involve? The title of this OpEd, “What Do a Renowned 9/11 Physicist and a N.Y. Times Best Selling Novelist Have in Common?” actually would be more appropriately titled, what do a former Los Angeles Police Department detective, a N.Y. Times best selling novelist, a mild mannered respected physicist, an equally mild mannered and equally respected architectural design engineer, and concerned citizens demanding a new 9/11 investigation, all have in common?

This is the story of the 9/11 truth movement, and perhaps the story of how all great movements for truth and justice are deliberately sabotaged by those powers who have an interest in keeping truth from the mass public.

Let’s begin with the LAPD detective’s story, who’d become a research writer after leaving LAPD. Not long after 9/11/2001, researcher Michael C. Ruppert, a former LAPD detective, smelled something not quite right about the events of 9/11.

His nose eventually led him to call on sources he’d developed over the years as a researcher and author, with military and intelligence insiders, and discovered that mysteriously there had been many multiple war games . . . war games which do not happen that often . . . but coincidentally all were ordered by “someone” to be held on 9/11/2001. Yes, the same day as the infamous 9/11 attacks.

I personally became aware of Ruppert’s work when he did what the US media failed to do, he followed up on mainstream media’s initial insight that there had been mysterious “insider stock trades” in the days leading up to 9/11 that signaled that someone with “insider knowledge” of the coming attacks had profited obscenely by betting “against” United and American Airlines “before” 9/11, by placing put options (bets that a stock will fall) on those ill fated airlines in trades that vastly eclipsed activity on other airlines in those days. Ruppert’s research found that $5 million in “winnings” were made at a known CIA-connected financial institution called AB Brown Trust. AB Brown had been headed by the man who was the current Executive Director of the CIA, Buzzy Krongard, on 9/11. The current head of AB Brown, a friend of Krongard’s, mysteriously resigned with no explanation immediately after the attacks on 9/11, and oddly $2.5 million of the winnings made against United and American Airlines by bets made the day before 9/11 . . . were never claimed.

As far as I know the man was never questioned about that, and the 9/11 Commission, led by Bush Admin. confidant Phil Zelikow, refused to look into the insider trades with any enthusiasm.

However, it was Mike Ruppert’s research into the mysteriously timed multiple war games of 9/11 that eventually evolved into his riveting research book entitled, Crossing the Rubicon. His book asks why were war games which had the effect of causing a US Air Force stand down all scheduled for 9/11/2001? Who ordered them? Was it Vice President Cheney, who appeared to have been in charge of a stand down order for our Air Force which allowed an aircraft to hit the Pentagon on 9/11, when there was still time to take it down and save many lives?

Transportation Secretary Norm Minetta’s testimony to the 9/11 Commission, for any investigator worth his/her salt, would have called for detailed questioning of Cheney, which never happened. Even more oddly the Transportation Secretary’s testimony was left out of the 9/11 Commission report. Left out by a Commission headed by Philip Zelikow a Bush Administration confidant, and co-author of a book with Condaleeza Rice, before his being forced down the throats of 9/11 family members who avidly protested a Bush Admin insider like Zelikow heading the Commission.

Israeli pianist Daniel Barenboim takes Palestinian citizenship

By News Agencie

Israeli musician Daniel Barenboim. (Reuters)
Daniel Barenboim, the world renowned Israeli pianist and conductor, has taken Palestinian citizenship and said he believed his rare new status could serve a model for peace between the two peoples. “It is a great honor to be offered a passport,” he said late on Saturday after a Beethoven piano recital in Ramallah, the West Bank city where he has been active for some years in promoting contact between young Arab and Israeli musicians.

“I have also accepted it because I believe that the destinies of … the Israeli people and the Palestinian people are inextricably linked,” Barenboim said. “We are blessed – or cursed – to live with each other. And I prefer the first.”

“The fact that an Israeli citizen can be awarded a Palestinian passport, can be a sign that it is actually possible,” he continued.

Former Palestinian Information Minister Mustafa Barghouthi, who helped organize Saturday’s concert, said the passport had been approved by the previous government of which he was a member and which was replaced in June. The passport had actually been issued about six weeks ago, he added.

Argentine-born Barenboim, 65, is a controversial figure in his adoptive homeland, both for his promotion of 19th-century composer Richard Wagner – whose music and anti-Semitic writings influenced Adolf Hitler – and vocal opposition to Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories.

Asked about U.S. President George W. Bush’s remarks last week on a visit to the region that a peace could be signed this year, Barenboim warned of the danger of raising hopes too high.

“It would be absolutely horrible if now, with good intentions, expectations are raised which will not be able to be fulfilled,” Barenboim said. “Then we will sink into an even greater depression.”

Though he dismissed any wish to play a political role, the former music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra took a dig at Bush’s strikingly forceful call in Jerusalem last week for Israel to end, in the president’s own words, “the occupation.” “Now even not very intelligent people are saying that the occupation has to be stopped,” Barenboim said. Along with the late Palestinian academic Edward Said, he co-founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, made up of young musicians from Israel, the Palestinian territories and neighboring Arab countries.

MEMRI is propaganda machine, expert says

MEMRI is propaganda machine, expert says
By Lawrence Swaim, Staff Writer
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) provides daily English translations of film and print media stories originating in Arabic, Iranian and Turkish media.

It also furnishes original analysis of cultural, political and religious trends in the Middle East.

It sends its daily postings to every news outlet in the United States and Europe, in addition to politicians and cultural leaders.

And it’s free, which makes it a Godsend for journalists, editors and policy analysts.

But according to its critics, it is also a dangerous, highly sophisticated propaganda operation, disseminating hate and disinformation on an unprecedented worldwide basis.

“They use the same sort of propaganda techniques as the Nazis,” Professor Norman G. Finkelstein, a well-known scholar on Israel/Palestine, told InFocus. “They take things out of context in order to do personal and political harm to people they don’t like.”

Take the case of Professor Halim Barakat, a novelist and scholar associated with the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University.

In 2002, he published an article on Zionism in London’s Al-Hayat Daily, but says that in certain instances, MEMRI selectively edited what he wrote.

“I know how to make a distinction between Judaism and Zionism, but they distorted the article,” Barakat told InFocus. “They left out certain things and tried to make it look anti-Semitic.”

Shortly afterward, Campus Watch, the brainchild of notorious Islamophobe Daniel Pipes, used the allegedly doctored translation in an effort to smear Georgetown University.

Finkelstein, an outspoken critic of Israeli policies and the U.S. pro-Israel lobby, also had a run-in with MEMRI.

In 2006, he gave a TV interview in Lebanon on the way the Nazi Holocaust is used to silence critics of Israel.

Finkelstein later wrote on his Web site: “MEMRI recently posted what it alleged was an interview I did with Lebanese television on the Nazi Holocaust. The MEMRI posting was designed to prove that I was a Holocaust denier.”

Far from being a Holocaust denier, Finkelstein’s own parents were Holocaust survivors, a fact he has often spoken about.

But MEMRI was able to create the opposite impression, as Finkelstein demonstrated on his Web site, by editing out large chunks of the actual interview.

When some comments by the moderator were included, it appeared that Finkelstein’s interview was about nitpicking the number of Jews who died in the Holocaust rather than about Israel/Palestine.

MEMRI’s obsessive interest in protecting Israel derives from the people and interests that founded, fund and manage the institute’s international operations.

It was founded in 1998 by Yigal Carmon, a former colonel in the Israel Defense Forces (Intelligence Branch) from 1968 until 1988, acting head of civil administration in the West Bank from 1977 to 1982; and Israeli-born Meyrav Wurmser, an extreme rightwing neoconservative now affiliated with the Hudson Institute.

Meyrav is married to David Wurmser, at one time an American Enterprise Institute “scholar” and then a State Department apparatchik under John Bolton.

Both participated in the collective writing of “A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm,” a seminal 1996 neocon document that advocated an end to negotiations with the Palestinians and permanent war against the Arab world.

They also worked with Douglas Feith, Elliot Abrams, Richard Perle and other rightwing ideologues who promoted and embellished the fiction that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11.

MEMRI has offices in Jerusalem, Berlin, London, Washington and Tokyo, and in a 2006 Jerusalem Post interview, Carmon claimed to have one in Iraq.

It translates film and print into English, German, Hebrew, Italian, French, Spanish and Japanese.

Tax returns for 2004 indicate American funding of between two to three million dollars, much of it from conservative donors and foundations – but those who have followed its far-flung operations suspect much higher expenditures.

Besides Carmon, several MEMRI staffers are former Israeli intelligence specialists. Especially troubling are suspected links between MEMRI and the current Israeli intelligence establishment.

According to a 2005 article in Israel’s Ha’aretz, the Israeli Defense Forces plants fake stories in the Arab media, which it then translates and tries to retail to Israeli journalists. How much of MEMRI is simply an extension of such IDF operations?

The questions raised by the Ha’aretz story caused Proffesor Juan Cole to write, “How much of what we ‘know’ from ‘Arab sources’ about ‘Hizbullah terrorism’ was simply made up by this fantasy factory in Tel Aviv?”

British journalist Brian Whitaker, Middle East editor of the Guardian, dismisses MEMRI as “basically a propaganda machine.”

Ken Livingstone, mayor of London, accuses them of “outright distortion,” and former CIA case officer Vince Cannistraro has written that “they (MEMRI) are selective and act as propagandists for their political point of view, which is the extreme-right of Likud.”

With characteristic bluntness. Norman Finkelstein has written: “MEMRI is a main arm of Israeli propaganda. Although widely used in the mainstream media as a source of information on the Arab world, it is as trustworthy as Julius Streicher’s Der Sturmer was on the Jewish world.” (Der Sturmer was a rabidly anti-Semitic newspaper, and Streicher a notoriously cruel Nazi.)

In an e-mail to InFocus, Cole characterized MEMRI as “a Right-Zionist propaganda organ, which usually does its propaganda unobtrusively, by being very selective in what it translates.”

Indeed , MEMRI appears to view the Arab world as a malevolent, mind-numbing monsters’ ball, populated almost exclusively by fanatics, freaks and fundamentalists.

Every story that could possibly make Middle Eastern people look deranged, hateful or diabolical gets translated; anything that could make them look informed, talented or admirable is ignored.

MEMRI says it covers reformers in the Arabic-speaking world, but longtime observers point out that people who make Islam or Arab culture look attractive rarely get translated, regardless of their position.

Nor does MEMRI feature stories about Palestinian suffering, Israeli dissenters, moderate Islamists, Christians in Arab governments or the growing nonviolent movement against the apartheid wall in the Occupied Territories, especially around Bal’in.

Instead, it promotes highly-edited footage featuring people like Wafa Sultan.

It was MEMRI that translated the sound bites from her famous al-Jazeera debate with Dr. Ibrahim al-Kouly that ended up on YouTube, making her an instant rock star to those who promote an international clash of cultures.

It is said by TV viewers who watched the entire debate that al-Kouly was rather patient with Sultan despite her extreme opinions.

(Among other things, Sultan has declared herself an atheist.) But MEMRI never bothered to translate and promote the whole debate.

MEMRI President Yigal Carmon was contacted to ask why the entire Sultan debate wasn’t translated and circulated, at least in a print version.

“MEMRI couldn’t do the whole interview because of the limitations of our resources,” Carmon told InFocus. “And it was just our best judgment of what was fit to translate.” He said he thought there was an “almost” complete version in the archives.

InFocus asked Carmon why MEMRI didn’t post more stories about domestic events in Israel and the OTC.

“Eighty percent of such stories are already in English,” Carmon said.

Then why not buy a few every week and send them out in order to give a more balanced picture of the Middle East, InFocus asked, “It probably wouldn’t be legal ,” he responded.

That brought up the thorny issue of copyright, ownership and power.

Why, Carmon was asked, does MEMRI copyright all the stories it translates, when most stories are written by Arab authors?

“Of course we copyright,” Carmon told InFocus. “Once we translate a story into another language, it becomes ours, because it’s our work.”

To test this theory in an American context, InFocus contacted The New York Times.

“If you translate copy from the Times, it would still belong to us, because we originated it,” said an employee of the Rights and Royalties Department who did not wish to be named.

When war and peace hangs on the translation of a single word or phrase, nuance is everything.

But can we trust the translator?

According its critics, until MEMRI starts translating Hebrew stories about the rightward drift of Israeli society, torture of Palestinians in Israeli jails, the forced exile of Ilan Pappe and Azmi Bishara, and the elevation of the neo-fascist Avigdor Lieberman to deputy prime minister of Israel, they aren’t really covering all Middle Eastern media.

“I think it’s a reliable assumption that anything MEMRI translates from the Middle East is going to be unreliable,” Finkelstein said.

Have Hillary and Obama Forgotten Iraq?

By: Mona Gable on: 12.01.2008 [12:12 ] (110 reads)

Posted January 11, 2008 | 05:50 PM (EST)

I hate to spoil everyone’s fun this week — the relentless focus on Hillary’s tears (were they a shameless ploy for sympathy or genuine?) and their role in her surprising New Hampshire victory. Or Bill’s snarky comments likening Obama’s uplifting vision to a “fairy tale.” But isn’t this a presidential race, not some high-school popularity contest? Isn’t this about who can best mop up the eight-year mess left by frat boy Bush?

On primary night you could see the impatience on Tom Brokaw’s face. The veteran NBC anchor was providing commentary on MSNBC and he looked like he wanted to deck Chris Matthews, who was babbling so much he barely let his erudite guest speak. At one point Matthews got all flustered when the results came in and Hillary was proclaimed the winner. Oh, no! Suddenly there was all that airtime to fill. What are we going to talk about now? asked a panicky Matthews. How about the issues, deadpanned Brokaw.

In their fight for the nomination, Hillary and Obama haven’t done this nearly enough. But the media hasn’t exactly prodded them to, either, with its endless coverage of the squabbling and sniping between the two candidates. Or who’s going on the defensive next! Sometimes the campaign feels more like a running episode of Survivor or Project Runway than a critical contest to elect a president.

Of course, any voter can go on the candidates’ websites and check out their policy positions and five-point plans to fix health care. But, really, most voters don’t. And probably won’t. They’re too busy working, picking up their kids from school, getting dinner on the table, and now worrying about their mortgages.

And what about Iraq? Which continues to drain the economy, cripple our military, inflict untold suffering on American soldiers and their families, and our moral position in the world. According to icasualties.org, at least 3,921 U.S. troops have been killed since we were tricked into invading Iraq. Have Clinton and Obama completely forgotten about the war? Five years into this quagmire, do either of them have a plan for getting us out? A post-war strategy? The surge was supposed to buy the Iraqis time to fashion a political solution. But so far it’s a bust.

While Obama and Hillary have continually trumpeted how they’re all about change, let’s not forget: when the time came to take a stand, they both voted to give Bush another $70 billion for Afghanistan and Iraq. This is progress? Giving corrupt private contractors more bucks?

Maybe you missed it, but a day after New Hampshire something else newsworthy happened. During a sweep to round up insurgents, six American soldiers were killed and four others injured when they entered a house in Diyala province. They’d been told the house was an Al Queda hideout. It was rigged with explosives.

As they battle for votes, maybe Hillary and Obama might want to talk about that.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police who asked not to be identified as saying that armed men raided the office of the WCPI on Friday and opened fire on a man called Musa Husayn Hasan, killing him on the spot.

A statement by the WCPI on Sunday described Hasan as an active cadre of the party who was killed Friday evening, and said that he had been tortured before being shot.

The so-called “Worker Communist Party of Iraq,” founded in 1993, advocates national nihilism, denouncing national liberation causes and most of the world’s Communist Parties as “nationalist” and “bourgeois,” asserting that they are followers of what it claims was the “bourgeois regime established in the Soviet Union beginning in the late 1920s.”

The WCPI, which is largely based in the predominantly Kurdish areas of northern Iraq, and which opposes Arab nationalism and Iraqi patriotism, has however, called for turning northern Iraq into an independent Kurdish state. Kirkuk, a city where Arabs are the largest population group, is claimed by Kurdish separatist forces that seek to annex the oil-rich city to a “Kurdistan” region.

In recent months the Jaysh al-Mahdi has been the target of US and puppet regime forces, in particular in Baghdad and the cities of southern Iraq where the Americans and their Iraqi puppet regime allies have killed or captured a large number of the militia’s commanders and cadres. The Jaysh al-Mahdi has also come into conflict with other, rival Shi‘i sectarian militias as they vie for control of the southern part of the country.

Puppet police in ad-Diwaniyah receive nine Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen taken prisoner in neighboring Dhi Qar Province as drive by US-backed puppet regime against pro-Iranian militia continues.

Yaqen reported ‘Akmush as saying that the puppet police in Dhi Qar handed over the pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian militiamen as part of coordinated efforts by the puppet regime security forces against their rivals in the pro-Iranian militia.

On a previous occasion, ‘Akmush had said that the puppet regime’s security forces in ad-Diwaniyah had arrested 350 members of the Jaysh al-Mahdi who were suspected of armed attacks on the puppet regime security forces.

Operations by the puppet regime’s security forces against the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in ad-Diwaniyah began early in November and are still underway as the Shi‘i sectarian coalition that accompanied the US invasion in 2003 and propped up the occupation since then has waged a turf war with the rival Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia that has alternately supported and opposed the US occupation of Iraq in an effort to impose its control on southern Iraq.
