More than three weeks after the body of a beloved middle school teacher was pulled from Ladybird Lake, a memorial will be held for the man whose life and death remain mysteries. The service is scheduled for 1 P.M. on Saturday, May 10, at the St. James Episcopal Church, 1941 Webberville Road in Austin.

When Riad Hamad’s body, bound with duct tape, was pulled from the water, the initial reaction was that a murder had occurred. But quickly–some say too quickly–the Austin Police Department said Hamad had likely bound himself to make his suicide look like a murder. Some questioned whether federal authorities had suggested to APD investigators that the ruling of “suicide” would make things easier for everyone. Court documents were released, which some local media insinuated showed that Hamad may have raised money for terrorists at best, or stole money from his beloved charities at worst.

Was Hamad the tireless fundraiser for Palestinian children? Or was he a thief? Or worse, a terrorist? Did he commit suicide?

Those who knew him well scoff at any assertions of wrongdoing on Hamad’s part. He was, they say, a wonderful and generous man who was sorely lacking in bookkeeping skills.

Yale University School of Medicine geneticist Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh, who received his Ph.D. at Texas Tech, will be one of the speakers at Hamad’s memorial. He told the Gazette he had not yet prepared his memorial speech, but referred us to an article by Greg Moses, editor of the Texas Civil Rights Review.

Moses was one of few journalists to question the case the authorities had on Hamad. He said he was unprepared to answer Gazette questions on the case, but invited us to quote from his article on counterpunch.org: “The federal agent who asked for the search warrant works for the Joint Terrorism Task Force, and he sets forth a case of probable cause involving ‘an illegal fraud scheme through the use of non-profit organizations, false documents submitted via U.S. Postal Service, false documents transmitted via wire communications, the failure to file federal income tax returns for the years 1999 through 2003 and 2005, and tax evasion for the years 1999 through 2006.’ ”

Moses continued, “ ‘There is absolutely no probable cause that Riad Hamad had anything to do with terrorism. Some sizable cash payments were allegedly delivered via ATM to the occupied Palestinian Territories. But according to Google, the man named in the affidavit as the one who received those payments appears to be a well-known nonviolent activist. In fact, the affidavit says very little about where Riad Hamad spent his money.’ ”

Paul Larudee, a friend who may have been the last person to speak with Hamad, agreed with Moses. He told the Gazette, “Riad was almost an ascetic in terms of his personal needs and had no interest in stealing funds. He was a lousy bookkeeper, which opened the door to the search warrant. I told Riad that I thought they would never find enough for an indictment, but he believed that they would just manufacture whatever evidence they needed.”

Larudee added, “The court documents do not purport to show that Riad was stealing funds from his charities, only that there is cause for investigation. That’s why it only justified a search warrant and not an indictment–a very low standard of evidence. The FBI and IRS have investigated a half dozen or so Islamic and Palestinian-related charities. In only one case that I know of have they returned indictments, and even in that case they failed to get a single conviction. However, the investigations themselves, including seizure of equipment and records, assets, travel documents, etc., as well as the cost of legal and accounting counsel, have severely impaired the ability of these organizations to function. That is the definition of harassment.”

While many of Hamad’s friends will never believe Hamad took his own life, Larudee does believe it. He said, “I believe Riad planned his own death because he believed it was the only way to prevent suffering the fate of people like Sami Al-Arian and to prevent persecution of his family and the denial of his dreams for his children, such as his daughter’s medical career. He believed that the U.S. government would destroy them to reach him.

“The manner of his death was intended to fuel the speculation about conspiracy that is in fact happening now. It was his way of reasserting control and teaching people not to trust the authorities that he perceived to be persecuting him.”

Larudee disagreed with the assertion that the police were quick to point to suicide. He said, “The police were not in fact so quick to suspect suicide. Before the body was found, they suspected it, mainly because the family was also concerned that this might be the case. Before the body was found, I was doubtful, but when the car was found with the door unlocked and the keys and cell phone on the seat, I became convinced that we would not find him alive.”

Larudee feels that Hamad took care to see that the charity he co-founded, the Palestine Children’s Welfare Fund, was in good stead before he died. Said Larudee, “Evidence about Riad’s last moments, the preparations that he made to turn over access to everything belonging to PCWF, and his conversations about the way he perceived things to be happening all point to him taking his own life. I don’t believe that his family or close friends ever had much doubt. However, I don’t really want to discourage speculation, because it’s what he wanted and because I believe that there is an element of harassment in the investigation, and that its timing is also suspect.”

Larudee forwarded a copy of a letter Hamad sent to Attorney General John Ashcroft. It reads in part: “My neighbor came up to me few weeks ago and informed me that an agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation called him again regarding some information about my activities and other personal matters. Mr. Frank R. specifically told me that the agent inquired about the kind of car that I drive since your agents cannot find any records of car ownership for me in Travis County or the state Texas. I was surprised to hear that from him since not even my closest friends know that I do not own a car or any property, fixed or mobile in the state of Texas or the United States. It was my choice at the age of forty to give up all material things and devote my life to something meaningful besides racking up dollars in my bank account.”

Friend Miriam Adams agrees that Hamad spent little on himself. She said, “Those who knew Riad well knew that he’d rather sleep in his car and skip meals than ‘waste’ any funds for a motel room. No one was more committed or justice-minded than Riad Hamad for children–especially those who exist in those wretched refugee camps. All I can say is that he was a sweet and passionately caring, committed soul who hated violence and struggled valiantly for this cause. I hope Riad can finally rest in peace, knowing that the work will continue.”

Ayman Suleiman is one of the Palestinian youths helped by Hamad. He told the Gazette, “I first met Riad when I was in Hutto.” Suleiman and his family were picked up by authorities and spent months in detention, awaiting deportation. “I was 16 at the time and I was about a month away from graduating early from high school, and going either Baylor med or SMU the next semester. That was what most bothered Riad and he had promised me that he will not only help get admittance to a medical university but will pay for my studies all the way through. I was brought to tears when I heard these words from him, for I was sure all the hard work and dreams of going to medical school had been shattered.”

Remembered Suleiman, “[Hamad] got me a laptop to help me with finishing high school (which was from his organization) and he would call a lot here to check out how the family was doing and if there was anything we needed. Words could never describe Riad and his actions–he was a true hero.”

Suleiman is one of those who will never accept the ruling of suicide. He said, “If there’s anything I do know it’s that Riad would never commit suicide. Why not? Because Riad was a very religious person. In Islam, suicide is something huge. Anyone who commits suicide in the Qur’an goes straight to hell. Why would a very religious man, who helps many children and people all over the world–with a very loving family and people all over the world that admire him–commit suicide?”

Perhaps the truth of Hamad’s life and strange death will never be entirely known. But what is known is that the man was beloved by many students and friends, and by those he helped. These friends and family hope that despite accusations of wrongdoing, he will be remembered as a peaceful man of charity.

How the FBI protected Al Qaeda’s 9/11 Hijacking Trainer

New Revelations about Ali Mohamed

Global Research, October 8, 2006

The following text is an expanded version of Peter Dale Scott’s Talk at Berkeley, September 24, 2006, entitled “9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out.”

I want to talk tonight about using the 9/11 Report as evidence – evidence of what is being suppressed. We can use it in this way because some parts of the Report are accurate and reliable. This base line of reliability helps define other parts of the Report which are misleading, and in a few places I believe dead wrong. These relevant omissions and deceptions should be taken as clues as to what is being suppressed, and where the hidden truth lies.

I shall talk of the Report’s occasional resistance to the truth. Let me give an easy and incontrovertible analogy from the Warren Report. The Warren Report got many things right; but it also minimized the links between Jack Ruby and organized crime.1 This resistance was a clue that Ruby in fact was crime-related and that this was important. The House Select Committee on Assassinations, even though they got many things wrong, amply confirmed the importance of Ruby’s crime links.

We find similar symptomatic resistance in the 9/11 Report.

1) Here is an easy example: the identity of the hijackers. The FBI had distributed a list naming 18 of the 19 alleged hijackers by 10 AM on 9/11.2 Within two weeks the identities of at least six of the hijackers were unclear; as men in Arab countries with the same names and histories, and in some cases the same photographs, were protesting that they were alive and innocent.3 In response to these protests, FBI Director Robert Mueller soon acknowledged that the identity of several of the suicide hijackers was in doubt.4 But there is no discussion of this problem in the detailed treatment of the alleged hijackers in the 9/11 Commission Report.5

2) WTC-7. This is obviously a big area of doubt, as you have just heard. The Report’s solution was not to mention WTC-7 at all. And yet Kean and Hamilton, the 9/11 Commission Co-Chairs, have the nerve to claim in their new book that after the Report “those believing conspiracy theories now had to rely solely on imagination, their theories having been disproved by facts.”6 In other words, they are still covering up that there was a cover up.

3) The U.S. government’s intimate on-going connection to al-Qaeda and a chief 9/11 plotter.

In our book, 9/11 and Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out, I wrote of Ali Mohamed, the close ally of Osama bin Laden and his mentor Ayman al-Zawahiri.7 It is now generally admitted that Ali Mohamed (known in the al Qaeda camps as Abu Mohamed al Amriki — “Father Mohamed the American”)8 worked for the FBI, the CIA, and U.S. Special Forces. As he later confessed in court, he also aided the terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, a co-founder of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and by then an aide to bin Laden, when he visited America to raise money.9

The 9/11 Report mentioned him, and said that the plotters against the U.S. Embassy in Kenya were “led” (their word) by Ali Mohamed.10 That’s the Report’s only reference to him, though it’s not all they heard.

Patrick Fitzgerald, U.S. Attorney who negotiated a plea bargain and confession from Ali Mohamed, said this in testimony to the Commission

Ali Mohamed. …. trained most of al Qaeda’s top leadership – including Bin Laden and Zawahiri – and most of al Qaeda’s top trainers. He gave some training to persons who would later carry out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing…. From 1994 until his arrest in 1998, he lived as an American citizen in California, applying for jobs as an FBI translator.11

Patrick Fitzgerald knew Ali Mohamed well. In 1994 he had named him as an unindicted co-conspirator in the New York landmarks case, yet allowed him to remain free. This was because, as Fitzgerald knew, Ali Mohamed was an FBI informant, from at least 1993 and maybe 1989.12 Thus, from 1994 “until his arrest in 1998 [by which time the 9/11 plot was well under way], Mohamed shuttled between California, Afghanistan, Kenya, Somalia and at least a dozen other countries.”13 Shortly after 9/11, Larry C. Johnson, a former State Department and CIA official, faulted the FBI publicly for using Mohamed as an informant, when it should have recognized that the man was a high-ranking terrorist plotting against the United States.14

As I say in our book, in 1993 Ali Mohamed had been detained by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Canada, when he inquired at an airport after an incoming al Qaeda terrorist who turned out to be carrying two forged Saudi passports. Mohamed immediately told the RCMP to make a phone call to the United States, and the call secured his release.15 We’ve since been told that it was Mohamed’s West coast FBI handler, John Zent, “who vouched for Ali and got him released.”16

This release enabled Ali to go on to Kenya, take pictures of the U.S. Embassy, and deliver them to bin Laden for the Embassy bombing plot.

In August 2006 there was a National Geographic Special on Ali Mohamed. We can take this as the new official fallback position on Ali Mohamed, because John Cloonan, the FBI agent who worked with Fitzgerald on Mohamed, helped narrate it. I didn’t see the show, but here’s what TV critics said about its contents:

Ali Mohamed manipulated the FBI, CIA and U.S. Army on behalf of Osama bin Laden. Mohamed trained terrorists how to hijack airliners, bomb buildings and assassinate rivals. [D]uring much of this time Mohamed was …, an operative for the CIA and FBI, and a member of the U.S. Army.17 …Mohamed turned up in FBI surveillance photos as early as 1989, training radical Muslims who would go on to assassinate Jewish militant Meir Kahane and detonate a truck bomb at the World Trade Center. He not only avoided arrest, but managed to become an FBI informant while writing most of the al Qaeda terrorist manual and helping plan attacks on American troops in Somalia and U.S. embassies in Africa.18

That Mohamed trained al Qaeda in hijacking planes and wrote most of the al Qaeda terrorist manual is confirmed in a new book by Lawrence Wright, who has seen US Government records.19 Let me say this again: one of al-Qaeda’s top trainers in terrorism and how to hijack airplanes was an operative for FBI, CIA, and the Army.

Yet this TV show, just before the 9/11 anniversary, was itself another cover-up. It suppressed for example the information given it about Mohamed’s detention and FBI-ordered release in Canada. According to Peter Lance, the principal author for the show, the show suppressed many other sensational facts. Here is Lance’s chief claim: that Fitzgerald and his FBI counterpart on the Bin Laden task force, John Cloonan, learned shortly after 9/11 that Mohamed “knew every twist and turn of” the 9/11 plot.20

Within days of 9/11 Cloonan rushed backed from Yemen and interviewed Ali, whom the Feds had allowed to slip into witness protection, and demanded to know the details of the plot. At that point Ali wrote it all out – including details of how he’d counseled would-be hijackers on how to smuggle box cutters on board aircraft and where to sit, to effect the airline seizures.21

If all these latest revelations about Ali Mohamed are true, then:

1) a key planner of the 9/11 plot, and trainer in hijacking, was simultaneously an informant for the FBI.

2) This operative trained the members for all of the chief Islamist attacks inside the United States – the first WTC bombing, the New York landmarks plot, and finally 9/11, as well as the attacks against Americans in Somalia and Kenya.

3) And yet for four years Mohamed was allowed to move in and out of the country as an unindicted conspirator. Then, unlike his trainees, he was allowed to plea-bargain. To this day he may still not have been sentenced for any crime.22

Peter Lance has charged that Fitzgerald had evidence before 1998 to implicate Mohamed in the Kenya Embassy bombing, yet did nothing and let the bombing happen.23 In fact, the FBI was aware back in 1990 that Mohamed had engaged in terrorist training on Long Island; yet it acted to protect Mohamed from arrest, even after one of his trainees had moved beyond training to an actual assassination.24

Mohamed’s trainees were all members of the Al-Kifah Center in Brooklyn, which served as the main American recruiting center for the Makhtab-al-Khidimat, the “Services Center” network that after the Afghan war became known as al Qaeda.25 The Al-Kifah Center was headed in 1990 by the blind Egyptian Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who like Ali Mohamed had been admitted to the United States, despite being on a State Department Watch List. 26 As he had done earlier in Egypt, the sheikh “issued a fatwa in America that permitted his followers to rob banks and kill Jews.”27

In November 1990, three of Mohamed’s trainees conspired together to kill Meir Kahane, the racist founder of the Jewish Defense League. The actual killer, El Sayyid Nosair, was caught by accident almost immediately; and by luck the police soon found his two co-conspirators, Mahmoud Abouhalima and Mohammed Salameh, waiting at Nosair’s house. They found much more:

There were formulas for bomb making, 1,440 rounds of ammunition, and manuals [supplied by Ali Mohamed] from the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg marked “Top Secret for Training,” along with classified documents belonging to the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. The police found maps and drawings of New York City landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Times Square – and the World Trade Center. The forty-seven boxes of evidence they collected also included the collected sermons of blind Sheikh Omar, in which he exhorted his followers to “destroy the edifices of capitalism.”28

All three had been trained by Ali Mohamed back in the late 1980s at a rifle range, where the FBI had photographed them, before terminating this surveillance in the fall of 1989.29

The U.S. Government was thus in an excellent position to arrest, indict, and convict all of the terrorists involved, including Mohamed.

Yet only hours after the killing, Joseph Borelli, Chief of NYPD detectives, struck a familiar American note and pronounced Nosair a “lone deranged gunman.”30 Some time later, he actually told the press that “There was nothing [at Nosair’s house] that would stir your imagination…..Nothing has transpired that changes our opinion that he acted alone.”31

Borelli was not acting alone in this matter. His position was also that of the FBI, who said they too believed “that Mr. Nosair had acted alone in shooting Rabbi Kahane.” “The bottom line is that we can’t connect anyone else to the Kahane shooting,” an F.B.I. agent said.”32

In thus limiting the case, the police and FBI were in effect protecting Nosair’s two Arab co-conspirators in the murder of a U.S. citizen. Both of them were ultimately convicted in connection with the first WTC bombing, along with another Mohamed trainee, Nidal Ayyad. The 9/11 Report, summarizing the convictions of Salameh, Ayyad, Abouhalima, and the blind Sheikh for the WTC bombing and New York landmarks plots, calls it “this superb investigative and prosecutorial effort.”33 It says nothing about the suppressed evidence found in Nosair’s house, including “maps and drawings of New York City landmarks,” which if pursued should have prevented both plots from developing.

What explains the 9/11 Report’s gratuitous and undeserved praise for the superb effort of Patrick Fitzgerald and the FBI in the New York landmarks case? How can it be “superb” to know that terrorists intend to blow up buildings, to lie to protect them from arrest, to allow them to bomb the WTC, and only then to arrest and convict them? Lance now alleges that Kenya was allowed to happen as well, before a few of the bombers there were convicted with the aid of the arch-plotter. This pattern of toleration can make for good arrest and conviction records, but at a terrible cost to public security.

Did the authors of the 9/11 Report recognize that here was an especially sensitive area, which if properly investigated would lead to past U.S. protection of terrorists? This question returns us to Peter Lance’s charge that Fitzgerald had evidence before 1998 to implicate Mohamed in the Kenya Embassy bombing, yet did nothing and let the bombing happen. Did Fitzgerald have similar advance evidence before the 9/11 attack, and again do nothing as well? Skeptics will need a thorough investigation before they can be reassured that this is not the case.

As a first step, all U.S. agencies should release the full documentary record of their dealings with Ali Mohamed, the FBI and CIA informant who allegedly planned the details of the airline seizures. Then and only then will a close interrogation of Fitzgerald satisfy those who accuse members of the U.S. Government of assisting the 9/11 plot, or alternatively of failing to prevent 9/11 from happening.34

Now, what did the 9/11 Commission know about this scandalous situation? I suspect they knew more than they let on. Is it just a coincidence that they selected to write the staff reports about al Qaeda and the 9/11 plot, and conduct the relevant interviews, a man who had a personal stake in preventing the truth about Mohamed from coming out. This man was Dietrich Snell, who had been Fitzgerald’s colleague in the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney’s office. (Thus Snell presumably drafted the praise for the superb effort by his former colleague Patrick Fitzgerald and the FBI). Of the nine people on Snell’s team, all but one had worked for the U.S. Government, and all but two for either the Justice Department or the FBI.35

Keep in mind that what I have said so far is about a government-Mohamed connection and cover-up that goes back to at least 1990, long before the Bush-Cheney administrations. But the 9/11 Commission staff reports went out of their way to cover this up. The 9/11 Report, based on the Snell staff reports, mentions Mahmoud Abouhalima and Mohammed Salameh, two co-conspirators of Ramzi Yousef in the first WTC bombing of 1993 (72). It does not mention that these two men had been trained by Ali Mohamed, even though Fitzgerald referred obliquely to this fact in his testimony. Nor does it mention that, had it not been for a police and FBI cover-up protecting Ali Mohamed back in 1990, Abouhalima and Salameh should probably have been in jail at the time of the WTC bombing –for their involvement in the murder of Meir Kahane by Ali Mohamed’s trainees three years earlier.36

If I had had time today, I would have written about other key areas where the 9/11 Report shows resistance to relevant facts and allegations. Central to these, and to my forthcoming book on 9/11, would have been the Report’s failure to deal with important testimony challenging Vice President Cheney’s account of his conduct on 9/11, and in particular his important relationship (which the Report obscured) to the stand-down and shoot-down orders of that day. There was important testimony contradicting both Cheney and the Report itself from two eyewitnesses inside the White House, Norman Mineta and Richard Clarke, which the Report flagrantly, and symptomatically, failed to deal with.

But I consider the scandal of Ali Mohamed’s tolerated terrorism to be a still more fundamental problem, an on-going problem for which we need a more serious remedy than just putting a Democrat in the White House. As has happened after past intelligence fiascoes, our intelligence agencies were strengthened as a result of the 9/11 Commission, and their budgets increased.

It’s time to confront the reality that these agencies themselves, and their own sponsorship and protection of terrorist activities, have aggravated the greatest threats to our national security.

The mainstream U.S. press, such as the New York Times, later attributed the confusion about the hijackers’ identity to the number of different Arabs sharing the same names. But at least five shared histories as well as names with the alleged hijackers. Waleed al-Shehri told the BBC “that he attended flight training school at Dayton Beach in the United States, and is indeed the same Waleed Al Shehri to whom the FBI has been referring. But, he says, he left the United States in September last year, became a pilot with Saudi Arabian airlines and is currently on a further training course in Morocco” (BBC, 9/23/01). Saeed al-Ghamdi, alive and flying planes in Tunisia, also studied at Florida flight schools, as late as 2001. According to the London Telegraph (9/23/01), CNN used his photograph in describing the hijacker with his name. Abdulaziz al-Omari acknowledged the same date of birth as the accused hijacker al-Omari, but claimed his passport was stolen when he was living in Denver, Colorado (London Telegraph, 9/23/01; Thompson, The Terror Timeline, 497).

9 This admitted connection to al-Zawahiri has led some to identify Mohamed (Abu Mohamed al Amriki) with the al-Amriki alleged by Yossef Bodansky to have acted as go-between between Zawahiri and the CIA: “In the first half of November 1997 Ayman al-Zawahiri met a man called Abu-Umar al-Amriki (al-Amriki means “the American”) at a camp near Peshawar, on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. High-level Islamist leaders insist that in this meeting Abu-Umar al-Amriki made al-Zawahiri an offer: The United States would not interfere with or intervene to prevent the Islamists’ rise to power in Egypt if the Islamist mujahideen currently in Bosnia-Herzegovina would refrain from attacking the U.S. forces there. Moreover, Abu-Umar al-Amriki promised a donation of $50 million (from unidentified sources) to Islamist charities in Egypt and elsewhere. This was not the first meeting between Abu-Umar al-Amriki and Zawahiri. Back in the 1980s Abu-Umar al-Amriki openly acted as an emissary for the CIA with various Arab Islamist militant and terrorist movements… then operating under the wings of the Afghan jihad…. In the late 1980s, in one of his meetings with Zawahiri, Abu-Umar al-Amriki suggested that Zawahiri would need “$50 million to rule Egypt.” At the time, Zawahiri interpreted this assertion as a hint that Washington would tolerate his rise to power if he could raise this money. The mention of the magic figure, $50 million, by Abu-Umar al-Amriki in the November 1997 meeting was interpreted by Zawahiri and the entire Islamist leadership, including Osama bin Laden, as a reaffirmation of the discussions with the CIA in the late 1980s about Washington’s willingness to tolerate an Islamic Egypt. In 1997 the Islamist leaders were convinced that Abu-Umar al-Amriki was speaking for the CIA — that is, the uppermost echelons of the Clinton administration” (Bodansky, Bin Laden, 212-13). As we shall see, it is the case that Mohamed was allowed to travel to Afghanistan even after his designation as an unindicted co-conspirator in 1994 (San Francisco Chronicle, 10/21/01).

Kalangan Liberal Akan Bela Ahmadiyah Melalui Iklan “Petisi”

Iklan petisi yang akan ditampilkan di empat Koran nasional itu dilakukan dengan alasan adanya “sekelompok orang yang hendak menghapuskan hak asasi itu dan mengancam ke-bhineka-an”.

Demikian sebagaimana dikutip dari situs salah satu aktivis liberal, *Nong Darol Mahmada*.

“Kami menyerukan, agar Pemerintah, para wakil rakyat, dan para pemegang otoritas hukum, untuk tidak takut kepada tekanan yang membahayakan ke-Indonesia-an itu,” demikian sebagaimana dikutip di blog Nong.

Yang tak kalah menariknya, petisi itu agak mengadu-domba umat Islam dengan pemerintah, seolah-olah penolak Ahmadiyah adalah memiliki agenda besar untuk mengubah Pancasila menjadi Negara Islam.

“Ada agenda dan kegiatan besar yang mengancam negara kita ini yang dilakukan segelintir kelompok untuk mengubah Indonesia yang berlandaskan Pancasila menjadi negara Islam yang berlandaskan kekhalifahan dan keImaman atau lainnya.”

“Saya menolak itu. Negara kita Plural dan beragama, dan tidak hanya mengakui satu agama dan keyakinan. Dalam setiap agama pun banyak keyakinan dan penafsiran,” demikian sebagaimana dimuat di situs Aliansi Kebangsaan untuk Kebebasan Beragama dan Keyakinan (AKBB) di *akkbb.wordpress.com*<http://akkbb.wordpress.com/>

Aliansi Bhineka Tunggal Ika adalah kelompok yang pernah menggerakan kalangan lesbian, homo, para pelacur dan penyanyi dangdut untuk menyampaikan sikap penolakan terhadap Rancangan Undang-undang (RUU) Anti Pornografi dan Pornoaksi (APP).

Petisi bertajuk “Mari Pertahankan Indonesia Kita!” dikoordinasikan oleh ICRP dan Aliansi Bhineka Tunggal Ika dan disebar di beberapa milis di Indonesia.

Umumnya, nama-nama yang ikut membela Ahmadiyah dalam petisi yang akan diiklankan di beberapa Koran ini adalah kalangan liberal yang tak memiliki massa. Diantara mereka ada nama; *Nong Darol Mahmada*, *Ulil Abshar Abdalah*(JIL), *Lies Marcoes* (aktivis feminis), *Ismed Natsir* (Aktivis hak minoritas), *Tika Makarim* (Ketua Aksi Peduli Indonesia), *Tini Hadad* (Anggota pengurus API), *Zumrotin*.

Sementara itu di lain pihak; kalangan seperti; NU, Muhammadiyah, Persis, dan ormas-ormas Islam yang tergabung dalam Forum Ukhuwah Islam (FUI) tak ada perselisihan menyangkut Ahmadiyah. Muhammadiyah tahun 2005 dan keputusan terbaru PBNU bahkan mendesak pemerintah agar Ahmadiyah menjadi agama tersendiri sebagai penyelesaian konflik yang adil. *PWNU Jatim Peringatkan “Kiai” Pembela Ahmadiyah*

Pengurus Wilayah NU Jawa Timur memperingatkan Wakil Rais Syuriyah Pengurus Cabang Nahdlatul Ulama (PCNU) Surabaya, KH. Imam Ghozali Said, karena dianggap membela Ahmadiyah. Sikap penolakan pelarangan Ahmadiyah yang dilakukan Ghozali Said dinilai tak sejalan dengan kebijakan NU yang telah menegaskan bahwa Ahmadiyah menyimpang dari Islam.

Karena itu, PWNU Jatim telah melayangkan surat kepada PCNU Surabaya pada Kamis (8/5) kemarin. Surat tersebut berisi perintah agar PCNU memberikan peringatan kepada Ghozali Said.

“Dimohon agar yang bersangkutan diberi peringatan agar konsisten dan dapat sejalan dengan keputusan di dunia Islam dan di lingkungan NU sendiri,” begitu salah satu bunyi surat tersebut sebagaimana dikutip www.nu.or.id

“Kita meminta agar Cabang (baca: PCNU) Surabaya memanggil dan memperingatkan dia (H Imam Ghozali Said),” ujar Rais Syuriyah PWNU Jatim, KH Miftachul Akhyar, kepada NU Online di kantornya.

Kiai Miftach­begitu panggilan akrabnya­menjelaskan, surat tersebut dikeluarkan untuk menghindari kesimpangsiuaran informasi mengenai sikap resmi NU atas kasus Ahmadiyah. Ia juga tak ingin ada pengurus NU yang berpendapat sesuka hati terkait aliran yang mengakui Mirza Ghulam Ahmad sebagai nabi tersebut.

Sebagaimana diketahui, Ghozali Said merupakan salah satu dari rombongan ulama dan kiai se-Jawa yang menemui Ketua DPR RI Agung Laksono di Gedung DPR, Jakarta, Rabu (7/4) lalu.

Dalam kesempatan itu, ia beserta sejumlah kiai lainnya meminta kepada Agung agar DPR membatalkan rencana pemerintah menerbitkan Surat Keputusan Bersama (SKB) tiga menteri terkait pembubaran Ahmadiyah.

Bahkan, Ghozali Said, menilai, tuntutan pelarangan Ahmadiyah merupakan pelanggaran terhadap Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM). Menurutnya, Islam pun menghargai kemanusiaan.

“Kalau pemerintah tidak melindungi Ahmadiyah, berarti negara gagal melindungi warganya,” pungkasnya.

Para kiai yang datang di Kejaksaan ini umumnya dikenal sebagai tokoh yang berpandangan liberal. Mereka juga datang atas sponsor dari Wahid Institute, LSM liberal yang dirintis oleh bekas Presiden RI Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur). [cha, berbagai sumber/www.hidayatullah.com]

“Berdasarkan sebuah survey Komite Swedia untuk Afghanistan (SCA), 80% sekolah untuk anak perempuan yg berlokasi di pedesaan Afghanistan dan dikuasai Taliban tetap beroperasi. Pia Karlsson, penasehat pendidikan dari SCA, mengatakan 85% anak perempuan masih bersekolah. Di Propinsi Kunduz, yang dikuasai Taliban, 122 sekolah untuk anak perempuan beroperasi, dengan 390 guru wanita yang terdaftar!”
Taliban adalah target utama dalam serangan media Anti-Islam, agar publik membenci mereka.

Semua wanita (feminis barat) yang mengkritik burqa (cadar), diam saja ketika 2 juta rakyat afghan tewas karena bom Russia, mereka diam ketika 500.000 rakyat Afghan cacat karena ranjau, dan diam saja ketika ribuan perempuan diperkosa sebelum Taliban berkuasa.

Jendral Hamid yang hidup beberapa tahun dibawah kekuasaan Taliban, berkata:

“Tidak ada kampanye yang ditujukan untuk memukuli wanita, dan tidak ada pelarangan pendidikan untuk wanita. Hanya pengetatan pendidikan bersama.”

Ada banyak kebohongan pada website-website “terhormat” tentang “penderitaan” wanita Afghan, dimana tidak ada tanggal, nama, tempat atau bentuk apapun yang bisa diverifikasi. Hamid gul berkata dia selalu melihat lebih banyak wanita di jalan-jalan dan pasar dari pada pria.

Wanita Afghan yang protes di barat berasal dari Faksi Khalq dan parcham yang Komunis. Mereka tidak mewakili sebagian besar masyarakat Afghan.

Taliban mengawasi ekstra ketat pada wanita-wanita komunis ini untuk memastikan mereka tidak menyebabkan perselisihan dan masalah. Wanita hanya harus menggunakan burqa dijalanan, sedang di rumah mereka bebas berpakaian yang meeka mau. Munur, seorang perawat berkata: wanita di Rumah Sakit jarang menggunakan burqa bahkan jilbab jika tidak ada pria disana.

Sebelum Taliban berkuasa, hanya ada 350 tempat tidur untuk wanita di Rumah Sakit di Kabul.. Pada Agustus 2001, ada 950 tempat tidur untuk wanita di Rumah Sakit khusus wanita di Kabul. Beberapa Rumah Sakit khusus wanita adalah RS Rabia Balkhi, RS Malali, RS Khair Khana, RS Indira Ghandi, RS Atta Turk, Pusat Kesehatan Bulan Sabit Merah Kuwait dan Klinik Kesehatan Penyakit Menular! Ada juga 32 klinik Wanita dan Anak.

Sebagai tambahan, wanita menerima layanan di ICRC dan Sanday Gal Orthopaedic Centres. Pada semua rumah sakit dan klinik hanya dokter dan perawat wanita yang bekerja melayani kesehatan.

Tetapi the Sun, Daily Express, New York Times, dan semua wartawan tidak pernah melaporkan hal ini, begitu juga dengan BBC, CNN, Fox News, dll. Ini adalah bagian dari kampanye dusta agar masyarakat dunia menentang Taliban.

Mereka berkata bahwa wanita tidak dapat bekerja, wanita tidak boleh keluar rumah, bersekolah, atau bahkan ke Rumah Sakit, semua fakta-fakta ini membuktikan sebaliknya.

Kasus Ahmadiyah: Jaga Kekompakan Umat Islam Hadapi Perang Ideologi

Forum Umat Islam dan Majelis Ulama Indonesia akan mengambil jalur hukum apabila Surat Keputusan Bersama (SKB) yang akan diterbitkan oleh pemerintah itu tidak berisikan larangan penghentian kegiatan Ahmadiyah. Demikian diungkapkan Ketua MUI KH. A. Cholil Ridwan ketika ditanya upaya lanjutan yang akan dilakukan umat Islam menyikapi SKB Ahmadiyah yang belum juga selesai.

Menurut dia, yang juga aktif dalam Forum Umat Islam, MUI dan FUI sudah melakukan konsolidasi untuk menghadapi kemungkinan yang akan terjadi pasca dikeluarkan SKB tersebut.

Masalah Ahmadiyah, lanjut Kyai Cholil, sudah bukan lagi murni masalah Ahmadiyah semata, namun menyangkut peperangan ideologi antara Islam dan sekuler, karena itu dikhawatirkan akan terjadi ‘pertempuran’ yang lebih besar.

“Karena itu, kita umat Islam harus melakukan konsolidasi, misalnya dengan menjaga umat Islam, jangan sampai melakukan tindakan yang melanggar hukum, itu akan kontra produtif dengan fatwa MUI. Umat Islam harus kompak dan menahan diri, ” tegasnyaa mengatakan, ulama dan umat Islam akan terus berjuang menggunakan sarana dakwah melalui khutbah di Masjid dan Majelis Taqlim diseluruh Indonesia, untuk membongkar kesesatan yang telah dilakukan oleh Jemaat Ahmadiyah.

“Kesesatan Ahmadiyah sudah luar biasa, bahkan ada klausul yang mengatakan umat diluar Ahmadiyah adalah Babi hutan untuk laki-laki, dan perempuannya pelacur, kalau tidak mau mengikuti harus dibunuh. Yang seperti ini akan harus blow-up, ” pungkasnya.

Cholil menyatakan, FUI juga akan bertemu dengan Menteri Agama M. Maftuh Basyuni untuk mendorong segera diterbitkan SKB soal Ahmadiyah.

Ditanya mengenai sikap MUI terhadap Adnan Buyung Nasution, Cholil Ridwan mengatakan MUI dalam posisi pasif, mengingat KH Ma’ruf Amin sendiri telah memaafkan Adnan Buyung Nasution.

Ia menjelaskan bahwa sikap Buyung yang selama ini mati-matian membela Ahmadiyah, karena memang posisi Adnan Buyung Nasution sebagai pengacaranya.

Di samping itu kalau dilihat dari ideologinya Adnan Buyung bukanlah orang yang berideologi Islam, melainkan ideologi sosialis. “Selamanya orang yang berideologi sosialis tak akan pernah melakukan pembelaan terhadap kepentingan Islam, ” tandasnya.(novel)

JAKARTA–Ahmad Hariadi, mantan pengajar di kelompok Jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI), menyatakan akan membantu membina anggota JAI. Dia mengaku setelah bertahun-tahun bergabung dan menjadi pengajar, dia pun insyaf karena terjadi perang doa (*mubahalah*) pada tahun 1986 dengan seorang ustadz.

”Saya masuk Ahmadiyah pada bulan desember 1973 di Bandung. Saya sempat ditugaskan untuk menjadi ustadz di Medan, Jakarta, Bali, dan Lombok,” ungkap Ahmad Hariadi pada acara Tabligh Akbar ‘Membongkar Kebohongan Ahmadiyah dan Testimoni Mantan Tokoh Ahmadiyah’ di Masjid Al Barkah, Jakarta, Ahad (11/5).

Saat berada di Lombok, kata Hariadi, dia melakukan perang doa dengan Ustadz Irfan. Janji diucapkan. Jika kalah, lehernya akan dipenggal. ”Saya kalah dalam perang doa itu dan sesuai janji maka leher saya harus dipenggal. Namun, aparat keamanan mencegah dan mengamankan,” kata dia. Peristiwa itu membuatnya insyaf. ”Setelah itu, saya menyadari bahwa selama ini saya mengikuti ajaran sesat. Karenanya, saya siap membantu dan membina serta menyadarkan anggota JAI,” kata dia di hadapan umat Islam.

Turut hadir dalam tabligh akbar itu Sekjen Forum Umat Islam (FUI); Ketua Front Pembela Islam (FPI), Habib Rizieq Shihab; Ketua Gerakan Persaudaraan Muslim Indonesia (GPMI), Ahmad Sumargono; Ketua LPPI Amin Djamaluddin; serta kuasa hukum FUI; Munarman.

Sementara itu, Ketua FPI Habib Riziek Shihab menguraikan sedikit isi Tadzkiroh, kitab utama JAI. Dalam kitab itu, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad mengaku sebagai Allah. ”Pada halaman 195 kitab Tadzkiroh, Mirza mengatakan ‘Aku melihat diriku sendiri sebagai mata Allah. Maka aku yakin aku adalah Allah’,” kata Habib.

Selanjutnya, pada halaman 197, kata Habib Rizieq, disebutkan bahwa Mirza menulis ‘Allah Tuhanku masuk ke dalam diriku. Maka Akulah yang menciptakan langit dan bumi.’ Ayat-ayat itu menyiratkan kesesatan ajaran Ahmadiyah. Apalagi Tadzkiroh juga menjadi kitab utama. ”Mereka bukan Islam karena punya kitab sendiri sebagaimana umat Nasrani dan agama lain,” kata Habib di hadapan umat Islam.

Sementara itu, menyinggung soal Surat Keputusan Bersama (SKB) tiga menteri tentang pelarangan Ahmadiyah, Sekjen FUI, Muhammad Al Khaththath, mengatakan mendapat bocoran bahwa isi akhirnya SKB diterbitkan segera. ”Namun, menurut informasi yang saya dapat, isinya sama sekali tidak menyebut larangan terhadap Ahmadiyah atau menyatakan Ahmadiyah sesat,”kata dia. Jika benar begitu, dia berharap Menteri Agama, Menteri Dalam Negeri, dan Kejaksaan Agung memperbaikinya.

Menurut Al Khaththath, pemerintah tidak perlu ragu karena umat Islam akan membantunya. ”Kami akan membimbing anggota JAI kembali ke Islam yang benar,” kata Al Khaththath disambung Habib Rizieq. Sementara itu, Wakil Ketua Badan Kerja Sama Perguruan Tinggi Islam Swasta Indonesia, Suyatno, meminta perguruan tinggi Islam proaktif mendukung penerbitan SKB untuk melarang JAI. Di sela pembentukan forum alumni perguruan tinggi Islam di Jakarta, kemarin, dia menilai sikap kampus cenderung pasif. osa/ade

Sesekali bukalah situs www. Libforall. Com, di sana ada sejumlah pengakuan jujur kaum liberalis Amerika dan juga pendukungnya di Indonesia untuk menghantam pemikiran Islam kafaah dan syumuliyah yang ada di dalam masyarakat Indonesia. Mereka menyebut umat Islam yang ingin menerapkan syariah Allah ini dengan sebutan “Islam Fundamentalis” dan bahkan menyebutnya sebagai “Teroris”.

Situs yang memiliki slogan “Promote the Culture of Liberty and Tolerance Worldwide” (Menyebarkan budaya kebebasan dan toleransi ke seluruh dunia) ini dalam halaman pertamanya memuat misinya yang antara lain memecah-belah kaum Muslimin dengan membedakan antara kaum Muslimin Fundamentalis yang dianggap sama dengan teroris dengan Muslim Tradisionalis yang disebutnya Muslim Moderat.

Jika kita klik enter maka terpampanglah halaman berikutnya yang diawali dengan sebuah kutipan atas pernyataan Abdurrahman Wahid seperti yang pernah dimuat di dalam The Wall Street Journal yang berbunyi: ”

“Muslims themselves can and must propagate an understanding of the ‘right’ Islam, and thereby discredit extremist ideology. Yet to accomplish this task requires the understanding and support of like-minded individuals, organizations and governments throughout the world. Our goal must be to illuminate the hearts and minds of humanity, and offer a compelling alternate vision of Islam, one that banishes the fanatical ideology of hatred to the darkness from which it emerged, ” demikian Wahid yang juga menjabat sebagai LibForAll co-founder, patron and board member.

Jadi, menurut “kiai” yang pernah foto bareng sedang memangku Aryanti Boru Sitepu-perempuan bukan muhrimnya ini hanya pakai daster, umat Islam seharusnya menyebarkan ‘kebenaran’ Islam yang sejuk dan menentang pemikiran Islam radikal. Entah, kebenaran macam apa yang dimaksud oleh “kiai” jenis ini.

Di dalam halaman bertajuk “Indonesian Programs” (Program untuk Indonesia) disebutkan bahwa Libforall sejak 2004 mengefektifkan programnya untuk Indonesia yang disebut sebagai satu negara yang memiliki jumlah Muslim terbanyak dunia, dengan menggandeng orang-orang Indonesia yang disebutnya sebagai tokoh-tokoh umat Islam Indonesia yang telah tercerahkan (baca: tentunya dalam pemahaman kamus kaum liberal). Beberapa programnya secara garis besar adalah:

Mendukung berdirinya “Wahid Institute” yang memiliki slogan “Seeding plural and peaceful Islam” dengan ikut mengembangkan pemahaman “Islam Moderat” dan menyebarkan gagasan pembaharan di bidang demokrasi, pluralisme, dan toleransi antara Muslim di Indonesia dan juga di seluruh dunia. Wahid Institute dipimpin oleh puteri tertua Abdurrahman Wahid yakni Yenni Wahid.

Lalu di bagian bawah ada foto Abdul Munir Mulkhan, tokoh liberal dari Muhammadiyah, bersama CEO Libforall Hollan C. Taylor. Abdul Munir Mulkhan ini mendirikan Yayasan Falsafatuna yang menggabungkan pemahaman sufiisme dengan ke dalam materi pendidikan sekolah untuk menghantam pemikiran Islam fundamentalis.

Lalu ada pula Yayasan Darmokusumo yang bermarkas di Yogya yang menggabungkan Islam dengan kejawen. Yayasan Libforall menyokong yayasan-yayasan lokal ini dengan program dan dana.

Ada lagi pernyataan jujur yang mencengangkan. Libforall mengadakan pendidikan bagi anak-anak Islam yang berada dalam kemiskinan, “.agar anak-anak miskin ini menerima pendidikan kesetaraan untuk toleransi, penguatan, dan keterampilan individual, dan juga berempati terhadap agama lain, menghadapi dunia maju. ” Seraya menuliskan kegiatannya ada di Jawa Tengah, Yogyakarta, hingga merambah anak-anak korban tsunami di Aceh.

Yang cukup membuat surprise, LibForAll Foundation ternyata juga menggandeng salah satu kelompok musik papan atas Indonesia untuk menyukseskan program liberalisasi Muslim Indonesia. Kelompok musik ini bernama Dewa untuk, “.to counter extremist ideology in the world’s most populous Muslim nation. ”

Pertemanan antara Libforall dengan kelompok musik Dewa agaknya sangat istimewa. Jika Wahid Institute hanya disinggung sekali di dalam satu halaman situs ini, maka untuk Dewa disediakan dua halaman khusus (Popular Culture dan Warriors of Love) yang secara cukup lengkap memuat detil program berikut foto-foto yang amat mesra antara para pengusung liberalisme Islam ini.

Bersama dengan Dawn Elder Management, Libforall membentuk satu gugus tugas dalam bidang manajemen kelompok-kelompok musik Islam dan non-Islam dunia untuk menyebarkan paham liberalisme yang dikatakan sebagai toleransi, pluralisme, dan demokrasi.

Salah satu proyek yang digagas mereka adalah merekam dan menerjemahkan lagu “Laskar Cinta” (Warriors of Love) ke dalam bahasa-bahasa dunia antara lain bahasa Arab, Parsi, Turki, Hindi/Urdu, Bengali, Swahili, Mandingue, Hausa, Perancis, Spanyol, Rusia, dan Inggris. Selain menerjemahkan, mereka juga membuat video klip dan juga bertanggungjawab atas distribusinya. Belum cukup sampai di sini, promosi lagu ini juga dilakukan di sejumlah negara dunia yang melibatkan artis-artis top dunia di Eropa dan Amerika.

Dalam situsnya, Libforall diketuai oleh C. Holland Taylor, dan Board of Directors-nya antara lain Abdurrahman Wahid, Ahmad Dhani, dan F. BAGHDAD — An American soldier used a Qur’an, the Islamic holy book, for target practice in a predominantly Sunni area west of Baghdad, prompting an apology from the U.S. military, a spokesman said Sunday.

Iraqi police found the bullet-riddled Qur’an with graffiti inside the cover on a small-arms range near a police station in Radwaniyah, a former insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, U.S. military spokesman Col. Bill Buckner said in an e-mailed response to a query.

American commanders then launched an inquiry that led to disciplinary action against the soldier, who has been removed from Iraq, Buckner said.

The shooting, which occurred May 9 and was discovered two days later, threatened to further strain relations between the Americans and Sunni allies who have joined forces with them against al Qaeda in Iraq in Radwaniyah and other areas.

The incident was first reported by CNN, which broadcast a ceremony at which the top American commander in Baghdad apologized to tribal leaders in Radwaniyah.

“I come before you here seeking your forgiveness,” Maj.-Gen. Jeffery Hammond was quoted as saying by the network. “In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my
soldiers.”

The commander also read a letter of apology by the shooter, and another military official kissed a Qur’an and presented it to the tribal leaders, according to CNN.

The military statement called the incident “serious and deeply troubling” but stressed it was the result of one soldier’s actions and “not representative of the professionalism of our soldiers or the respect they have for all faiths.”

The Sunni alliances have been key to a steep decline in violence over the past year, along with a U.S. troop buildup and a longer term ceasefire by al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army militia.

A Roman Catholic Bishop in the Netherlands has proposed people of all faiths refer to God as Allah to foster understanding among religions.

Amsterdam, Aug 15, 2007 / 09:15 am (CNA).- Bishop Martinus Muskens of Breda, Netherlands, suggested in an interview with Radio Netherlands that Christians should refer to God as Allah, which would promote better relations with Muslims.

The 71-year-old Bishop, Tiny Muskens, told Radio Netherlands that God did not mind what he was named and that in Indonesia, where he had spent eight years, priests used the word “Allah” while celebrating Mass.

“Allah is a very beautiful word for God. Shouldn’t we all say that from now on we will name God Allah?”

The bishop, who had worked in Indonesia, noted that even Christians use the term Allah for God there. The Dutch should learn to get on spontaneously with different cultures, religions and behavior patterns:
“Someone like me has prayed to Allah yang maha kuasa (Almighty God) for eight years in Indonesia and other priests for 20 or 30 years. In the heart of the Eucharist, God is called Allah over there, so why can’t we start doing that together?” he was quoted as saying.

Some Dutch Muslims welcomed his comments as a valuable gesture of support coming just days after a far-right Dutch politician insulted the Holy Quran. Geert Wilders called for the Quran to be banned in the country.

Wilders, whose new party won nine seats out of the 150 in parliament in last November’s elections, is well known for his negative remarks on Islam.

Bishop Muskens admitted that he did not think his suggestion would be welcomed readily and that it would take about 100 years before Catholics would feel comfortable calling God “Allah”.

In an interview broadcast on Monday’s edition of current affairs show “Netwerk,” Muskens said he had worked in Indonesia where God is referred to as Allah in Christian services.
But a spokesman for one of the capital’s leading mosques said he was not happy with the statement.
“We didn’t ask for this, a spokesman for the Moroccan Mosque in Amsterdam told De Telegraaf.
“Now it is as if we have a problem between Muslims and Christians.”

Gerrit de Fijter, chairman of the General Synod of the Dutch Protestant Church, also rejected Muskens’ suggestion. “I applaud every attempt to encourage dialogue with Muslims, but I doubt the sense of this maneuver,” De Fijter told De Telegraaf.

Neither De Fijter nor Muslim community leaders returned calls seeking comment Wednesday.

Speaking to a local television network Wednesday, Muskens said he was pleased his comments had sparked debate. “That they are interested in how to get along with God, that is a positive result,” he told Omroep Brabant.

Muskens is known for controversial statements. In 1996, he declared that it was acceptable for the hungry to steal bread. He also advocated condom use to prevent the spread of AIDS and urged the abolition of celibacy for priests.

In June, Muskens requested Pope Benedict XVI to grant him retirement from the bishopry. Muskens, aged 71, was appointed Bishop of Breda in November 1994.

“Allah” is the same word used by Christian Arabs and Jewish Arabs in their Bible, centuries before Islam came.

On page one [1] of Genesis in the Old Testament, we find the word “Allah” seventeen [17] times.

Every hotel and motel has a Bible. Next time you see one look in the introduction, you will find samples of the different languages they have translated. For Arabic they have translated the verse in the New Testament in Arabic from the famous verse in the Gospel John 3:16 –

“For God so loved the world . . . ”
– and the word the translators used in Arabic for “God” is the very same word used by Muslims around the planet, “Allah.”
Where Does the word “Allah” Come From?

This word (elah) can be made plural (gods), as in “aleha” and it can be male or female just as the word in English can be “goddess.”

Marilah kita buka satu persoalan yang di negara-negara Barat dianggap sebagai simbol dari penindasan dan perbudakan wanita, yaitu jilbab atau tudung kepala. Apakah betul tidak terdapat pembahasan mengenai jilbab di dalam tradisi Jahudi-Kristen ? Mari kita lihat bukti catatan yang ada. Menurut Rabbi Dr. Menachem M. Brayer, Professor Literatur Injil pada Universitas Yeshiva dalam bukunya, The Jewish woman in Rabbinic Literature, menulis bahwa baju bagi wanita Yahudi saat bepergian keluar rumah yaitu mengenakan penutup kepala yang terkadang bahkan harus menutup hampir seluruh muka dan hanya meninggalkan sebelah mata saja. Beliau disana mengutip pernyataan beberapa Rabbi (pendeta Yahudi) kuno yang terkenal:

“Bukanlah layaknya anak-anak perempuan Israel yang berjalan keluar tanpa penutup kepala” dan “Terkutuklah laki-laki yang membiarkan rambut isterinya terlihat,” dan “Wanita yang membiarkan rambutnya terbuka untuk berdandan membawa kemelaratan.” Hukum Rabbi melarang pemberian berkat dan doa kepada wanita menikah yang tidak menutup kepalanya karena rambut yang tidak tertutup dianggap “telanjang”. Dr. Brayer juga mengatakan bahwa “Selama masa Tannaitic, wanita Yahudi yang tidak menggunakan penutup kepala dianggap penghinaan terhadap kesopanannya. Jika kepalanya tidak tertutup dia bisa dikenai denda sebanyak empat ratus zuzim untuk pelanggaran tersebut.”

Dr. Brayer juga menerangkan bahwa jilbab bagi wanita Yahudi bukanlah selalu sebagai simbol dari kesopanan. Kadang-kadang, jilbab justru menyimbolkan kondisi yang membedakan status dan kemewahan yang dimiliki wanita yang mengenakannya ketimbang ukuran kesopanan. Jilbab atau tudung kepala menandakan martabat dan keagungan seorang wanita bangsawan Yahudi. Jilbab juga diartikan sebagai penjagaan terhadap hak milik suami.

Jilbab menunjukkan suatu penghormatan dan status sosial dari seorang wanita. Seorang wanita dari golongan bawah mencoba menggunakan jilbab untuk memberikan kesan status yang lebih tinggi. Jilbab merupakan tanda kehormatan. Oleh karena itu di masyarakat Yahudi kuno, pelacur-pelacur tidak diperbolehkan menutup kepalanya. Tetapi pelacur-pelacur sering memakai penutup kepala agar mereka lebih dihormati (S.W.Schneider, 1984, hal 237). Wanita-wanita Yahudi di Eropa melanjutkan menggunakan jilbab sampai abad ke sembilan belas hingga mereka bercampur baur dengan budaya sekuler. Tekanan eksternal dari kehidupan di Eropa pada abad sembilan belas memaksa banyak dari mereka pergi keluar tanpa penutup kepala. Beberapa wanita Yahudi kemudian lebih cenderung menggantikan penutup tradisional mereka dengan rambut palsu sebagai bentuk lain dari penutup kepala. Dewasa ini, wanita-wanita Yahudi yang saleh tidak pernah memakai penutup kepala kecuali bila mereka mengunjungi sinagog (gereja Yahudi) (S.W.Schneider, 1984, hal. 238-239). Sementara beberapa dari mereka. seperti sekte Hasidic, masih menggunakan rambut palsu (Alexandra Wright, 19??, hal 128-129).

Bagaimanakah jilbab menurut tradisi Kristen ?. Kita sendiri menyaksikan sampai hari ini bahwa para Biarawati Katolik menutup kepalanya yang suruhannya sebetulnya telah ada semenjak empat ratus tahun yang lalu. Tetapi bukan hanya itu, St. Paul (atau Paulus) dalam Perjanjian Baru, I Korintus 11:3-10, membuat pernyataan-pernyataan yang menarik tentang jilbab sebagai berikut:

“Tetapi aku mau, supaya kamu mengetahui hal ini, yaitu Kepala dari tiap laki-laki adalah Kristus, kepala dari perempuan adalah laki-laki dan kepala Kristus adalah Allah. Tiap laki-laki yang berdoa atau bernubuat dengan kepala yang bertudung, menghina kepalanya. Tetapi tiap-tiap perempuan yang berdoa atau bernubuat dengan kepala yang tidak bertudung, menghina kepalanya, sebab ia sama dengan perempuan yang dicukur rambutnya. Sebab jika perempuan tidak mau menudungi kepalanya, maka haruslah ia juga mengguting rambutnya. Tetapi jika bagi perempuan adalah penghinaan, bahwa rambutnya digunting atau dicukur, maka haruslah ia menudungi kepalanya. Sebab laki-laki tidak perlu menudungi kepalanya: ia menyinarkan kemuliaan Allah. Tetapi perempuan menyinarkan kemuliaan laki-laki. Sebab laki-laki tidak berasal dari perempuan, tetapi perempuan berasal dari laki-laki. Dan laki-laki tidak diciptakan karena perempuan, tetapi perempuan dicipt akan karena laki-laki. Sebab itu, perempuan harus memakai tanda wibawa di kepalanya oleh karena malaikat” (I Korintus 11:3-10).

St. Paul memberikan penalaran tentang wanita yang berjilbab atau berkerudung adalah bahwa jilbab memberikan tanda kekuasaan pada laki-laki, yang merupakan gambaran kebesaran Tuhan, atas wanita yang diciptakan dari dan untuk laki-laki. St. Tertulian di dalam risalahnya “On The Veiling Of Virgins” menulis: “Wanita muda hendaklah engkau mengenakan kerudung saat berada di jalan, demikian pula hendaknya engkau mengenakan di dalam gereja, mengenakannya saat berada di antara orang asing dan mengenakannya juga saat berada di antara saudara laki-lakimu.”

Di antara hukum-hukum Canon pada Gereja Katolik dewasa ini, ada hukum yang memerintahkan wanita menutup kepalanya di dalam gereja (Clara M Henning, 1974, hal 272). Beberapa golongan Kristen, seperti Amish dan Mennoties contohnya, mereka hingga hari ini tetap mengenakan tutup kepala. Alasan mereka mengenakan tutup kepala, seperti yang dikemukakan pemimpin gerejanya adalah: “Penutup kepala adalah simbol dari kepatuhan wanita kepada laki-laki dan Tuhan,” logika yang sama seperti yang ditulis oleh St. Paul dalam Perjanjian Baru (D. Kraybill, 1960, hal 56).

Dari semua bukti-bukti di atas, nyata bahwa Islam bukanlah agama yang mengada-adakan dan mewajibkan penutup kepala, tetapi Islam telah mendukung hukum tersebut. Al Qur’an memerintahkan kepada laki-laki dan perempuan yang beriman untuk menahan pandangannya dan menjaga kemaluannya. Juga memerintahkan wanita beriman agar memanjangkan penutup kepalanya sampai menutupi leher dan dadanya.

“Katakanlah kepada orang laki-laki yang beriman: “Hendaklah mereka menahan pandangannya, dan memelihara kemaluannya; yang demikian itu adalah lebih suci bagi mereka, sesungguhnya Allah Maha Mengetahui apa yang mereka perbuat….. Katakanlah kepada wanita yang beriman :

“Hendaklah mereka menahan pandangannya, dan memelihara kemaluannya, dan janganlah mereka menampakkan perhiasannya, kecuali yang (biasa) nampak darinya. Dan hendaklah mereka menutup kain kerudung ke dadanya…” (An Nuur:30,31)

Di dalam Al Qur’an jelas tertulis bahwa kerudung sangat penting untuk menutup aurat. Mengapa aurat itu penting ? Hal itu dijelaskan dalam Al Qur’an surat Al Ahzab 59:

“Hai Nabi katakanlah kepada isteri-isterimu, anak-anak perempuanmu dan isteri-isteri orang mu’min: Hendaklah mereka mengulurkan jilbabnya ke seluruh tubuh mereka.” Yang demikian itu supaya mereka lebih mudah untuk dikenal, karena itu mereka tidak diganggu.” (Al Ahzab:59)

Pada intinya, kesederhanaan digambarkan untuk melindungi wanita dari gangguan atau mudahnya, kesederhanaan adalah perlindungan.

Jadi, tujuan utama dari jilbab atau kerudung di dalam Islam adalah perlindungan. Kerudung di dalam Islam tidak sama seperti di dalam tradisi Kristen dimana merupakan tanda bahwa martabat laki-laki beradadi atas wanita dan merupakan simbolisasi tunduknya wanita terhadap laki-laki. Kerudung di dalam Islam juga bukan seperti di dalam tradisi Yahudi dimana kerudung merupakan tanda keagungan dan tanda pembeda sebagai wanita bangsawan yang menikah. Kerudung di dalam Islam hanya sebagai tanda kesederhanaan dengan tujuan melindungi wanita, tepatnya semua wanita. Pada falsafah Islam dikenali prinsip bahwa selalu lebih baik menjaga daripada menyesal kemudian….
