The Top Misconceptions About Islam

Wednesday, 25 June 2008 11:52 www.daily.pk

Muslims are violent, terrorists, and extremists!

This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words ‘Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.’ linked with violence.

Politics in so called ‘Muslim countries” may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and is derived from a root word meaning ‘peace’.

Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn’t dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a ‘way of life’ for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.

NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS… The Qur’an says: “Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors.” (Qur’an 2:190) “If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things.” (Qur’an 8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term ‘jihad’ literally means ‘struggle’. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other ‘jihad’ is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner peace.

Islam oppresses women.

The image of the typical Muslim woman wearing the veil and forced to stay home and forbidden to drive is all too common in most peoples’ thoughts. Although some Muslim countries may have laws that oppress women, this should not be seen as coming from Islam. Many of these countries do not rule by any kind of Shari’ah (Islamic law) and introduce their own cultural standpoints on the issue of gender equity.

Islam on the other hand gives men and women different roles and equity between the two is laid down in the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Islam sees a woman, whether single or married, as an individual in her own right, with the right to own and dispose of her property and earnings. A marriage gift is given by the groom to the bride for her own personal use, and she keeps her own family name rather than taking her husband’s. Both men and women are expected to dress in a way which is modest and dignified. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: “The most perfect in faith amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his wife.”

Violence of any kind towards women and forcing them against their will for anything is not allowed. A Muslim marriage is a simple, legal agreement in which either partner is free to include conditions. Marriage customs thus vary widely from country to country. Divorce is not common, although it is acceptable as a last resort. According to Islam, a Muslim girl cannot be forced to marry against her will: her parents simply suggest young men they think may be suitable.

Muslims worship a different God

Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Allah for Muslims is the greatest and most inclusive of the Names of God, it is an Arabic word of rich meaning, denoting the one and only God and ascribing no partners to Him. It is exactly the same word which the Jews, in Hebrew, use for God (eloh), the word which Jesus Christ used in Aramaic when he prayed to God. God has an identical name in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Allah is the same God worshiped by Muslims, Christians and Jews. Muslims believe that Allah’s sovereignty is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were sent at various times and in many places throughout history.

Islam was spread by the sword and is intolerant of other faiths

Many social studies textbooks for students show the image of an Arab horseman carrying a sword in one hand and the Qur’an in the other conquering and forcibly converting. This, though, is not a correct portrayal of history. Islam has always given respect and freedom of religion to all faiths. The Qur’an says: “God forbids you not, with regards to those who fight you not for [your] faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them; for God loveth those who are just.” (60:8) Freedom of religion is laid down in the Qur’an itself: “There is no compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The right direction is distinctly clear from error”. (2:256)

Christian missionary, T.W. Arnold had this opinion on his study of the question of the spread of Islam: “… Of any organized attempt to force the acceptance of Islam on the non-Muslim population, or of any systematic persecution intended to stamp out the Christian religion, we hear nothing. Had the caliphs chosen to adopt either course of action, they might have swept away Christianity as easily as Ferdinand and Isabella drove Islam out of Spain, or Louis XIV made Protestantism …”

It is a function of Islamic law to protect the privileged status of minorities, and this is why non-Muslim places of worship have flourished all over the Islamic world. History provides many examples of Muslim tolerance towards other faiths: when the caliph Omar entered Jerusalem in the year 634, Islam granted freedom of worship to all religious communities in the city.

Proclaiming to the inhabitants that their lives, and property were safe, and that their places of worship would never be taken from them, he asked the Christian patriarch Sophronius to accompany him on a visit to all the holy places. Islamic law also permits non-Muslim minorities to set up their own courts, which implement family laws drawn up by the minorities themselves. The life and property of all citizens in an Islamic state are considered sacred whether the person is Muslim or not.

Racism is not a part of Islam, the Qur’an speaks only of human equality and how all peoples are equal in the sight of God. “O mankind! We created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honored of you in God’s sight is the greatest of you in piety. God is All-Knowing, All- Aware.” (49:13)

All Muslims are Arabs

The Muslim population of the world is around 1.4 billion. 1 out of 4 people in the world is a Muslim. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the World and North America. They are a vast range of races, nationalities, and cultures from around the globe–from the Philippines to Nigeria–they are united by their common Islamic faith. Only about 18% live in the Arab world and the largest Muslim community is in Indonesia. Most Muslims live east of Pakistan. 30% of Muslims live in the Indian subcontinent, 20% in Sub-Saharan Africa, 17% in Southeast Asia, 18% in the Arab world, and 10% in the Soviet Union and China. Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan make up 10% of the non-Arab Middle East. Although there are Muslim minorities in almost every area, including Latin America and Australia, they are most numerous in Russia and its newly independent states, India and central Africa. There are about 8 million Muslims in the United States.

The Nation of Islam is a Muslim group

Islam and the so called “Nation of Islam'” are two different religions. Muslims consider this group to be just one of many cults using the name of Islam for their own gain. The only thing common between them is the jargon, the language used by both. “The Nation of Islam” is a misnomer; this religion should be called Farrakhanism, after the name of its propagator, Louis Farrakhan.

Islam and Farakhanism differ in many fundamental ways. For example, Farrakhan followers believe in racism and that the ‘black man’ was the original man and therefore superior, while in Islam there is no racism and everyone is considered equal in the sight of God, the only difference being in one’s piety. There are many other theological examples that show the ‘Nation’s teachings have little to do with true Islam. There are many groups in America who claim to represent Islam and call their adherents Muslims.

Any serious student of Islam has a duty to investigate and find the true Islam. The only two authentic sources which bind every Muslim are 1. The Quran and 2. Authentic or sound Hadith. Any teachings under the label of “Islam” which contradict or at variance with the direct understanding of fundamental beliefs and practices of Islam form the Quran and authentic Hadith should be rejected and such a religion should be considered a Pseudo-Islamic Cult. In America there are many pseudo-Islamic cults, Farrakhanism being one of them. An honest attitude on the part of such cults should be not to call themselves Muslims and their religion Islam. Such an example of honesty is Bahaism which is an off-shoot of Islam but Bahais do not call themselves Muslims nor their religion, Islam. In fact Bahaism is not Islam just as Farrakhanism is not Islam.

All Muslim men marry four wives

The religion of Islam was revealed for all societies and all times and so accommodates widely differing social requirements. Circumstances may warrant the taking of another wife but the right is granted, according to the Quran, only on condition that the husband is scrupulously fair. No woman can be forced into this kind of marriage if they do not wish it, and they also have the right to exclude it in their marriage contract.

Polygamy is neither mandatory, nor encouraged, but merely permitted. Images of “sheikhs with harems” are not consistent with Islam, as a man is only allowed at most four wives only if he can fulfill the stringent conditions of treating each fairly and providing each with separate housing etc. Permission to practice polygamy is not associated with mere satisfaction of passion. It is rather associated with compassion toward widows and orphans. It was the Quran that limited and put conditions on the practice of polygamy among the Arabs, who had as many as ten or more wives and considered them “property”. It is both honest and accurate to say that it is Islam which regulated this practice, limited it, made it more humane and instituted equal rights and status for all wives. What the Qur’anic decrees amount to, taken together is discouragement of polygamy unless necessity for it exists. It is also evident that the general rule in Islam is monogamy and not polygamy. It is a very tiny percentage of Muslims that practice it over the world. However, permission to practice limited polygamy is only consistent with Islam’s realistic view of the nature of man and woman and of various social needs, problems and cultural variations. The question is, however far more than the inherent flexibility of Islam; it also is the frank and straightforward approach of Islam in dealing with practical problems. Rather than requiring hypocritical and superficial compliance, Islam delves deeper into the problems of individuals and societies, and provides for legitimate and clean solutions which are far more beneficial than would be the case if they were ignored. There is no doubt that the second wife legally married and treated kindly is better off than a mistress without any legal rights or expermanence.

Muslims are a barbaric, backwards people

Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the simplicity of its doctrine-Islam calls for faith in only one God worthy of worship. It also repeatedly instructs man to use his powers of intelligence and observation. Within a few years, great civilizations and universities were flourishing, for according to the Prophet (pbuh), ‘seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim man and woman’.

The synthesis of Eastern and Western ideas and of new thought with old, brought about great advances in medicine, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, architecture, art, literature, and history.

Many crucial systems such as algebra, the Arabic numerals, and also the concept of the zero (vital to the advancement of mathematics), were transmitted to medieval Europe from Islam. Sophisticated instruments which were to make possible the European voyages of discovery were developed, including the astrolabe, the quadrant and good navigational maps.

Muhammad(PBUH) was the founder of Islam and Muslims worship him

Muhammad (pbuh) was born in Mecca in the year 570. Since his father died before his birth, and his mother shortly afterwards, he was raised by his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh. As he grew up, he became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, so that he was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes. The historians describe him as calm and meditative. Muhammad (pbuh) was of a deeply religious nature, and had long detested the decadence of his society.

It became his habit to meditate from time to time in the Cave of Hira near Mecca. At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat, Muhammad (pbuh) received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for 23 years, is known as the Quran. As soon as he began to recite the words he heard from Gabriel, and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution, which grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate.

This event, the Hijra ‘migration’, in which they left Mecca for the city of Medina, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. After several years, the Prophet and his followers were able to return to Mecca, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam definitively. Before the Prophet saw dies at the age of 63, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century of his death Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China. He died with less than 5 possessions to his name.

While Muhammad (pbuh) was chosen to deliver the message, he is not considered the “founder” of Islam, since Muslims consider Islam to be the same divine guidance sent to all peoples before. Muslims believe all the prophets from Adam, Noah, Moses, Jesus etc. were all sent with divine guidance for their peoples. Every prophet was sent to his own people, but Muhammad (pbuh) was sent to all of mankind. Muhammad is the last and final messenger sent to deliver the message of Islam. Muslims revere and honor him (pbuh) for all he went through and his dedication, but they do not worship him. “O Prophet, verily We have sent you as a witness and a bearer of glad tidings and a warner and as one who invites unto God by His leave and as an illuminating lamp.” (33:45-6)

Muslims don’t believe in Jesus or any other prophets

Muslims respect and revere Jesus, upon him be peace, and await his Second Coming. They consider him one of the greatest of God’s messengers to mankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as ‘Jesus’, but always adds the phrase ‘upon him be peace’ (abbreviated as (u) here). The Quran confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Quran is entitled ‘Mary’), and Mary is considered the purest woman in all creation. The Quran describes the Annunciation as follows: “Behold!” the Angel said, “God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and shall be of the righteous.” She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?” He said: “Even so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, “Be!” and it is” (Quran 3:42-47)

Jesus (u) was born miraculously through the same power which had brought Adam (u) into being without a father: “Truly, the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then said to him, ‘Be!’ and he was.” (3:59) during his prophetic mission Jesus (u) performed many miracles. The Quran tells us that he said: ” I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God’s leave. And I heal the blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead by God’s leave.” (3:49) Neither Muhammad (pbuh) not Jesus (u) came to change the basic doctrine of the brief in One God brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it.

In the Qur’an Jesus (u) is reported as saying that he came: “To attest the law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear God and obey Me. (3:50) The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said: “Whoever believes there is no god but God, alone without partner, that Muhammad(pbuh) is His messenger, that Jesus is the servant and messenger of God, His word breathed into Mary and a spirit emanating from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by God into Heaven. “(Hadith related by Bukhari)

Is Democracy Dangerous in Multi-ethnic Societies?

Interview with Frances Stewart, Oxford University Professor of Development Economics

OXFORD, Jun 26 (IPS) – The Centre for Research on Inequality, Human Security and Ethnicity (CRISE) would seem to have its work cut out for it in a world racked by brutal and enduring conflict. The centre’s goal is to explore the links between ethnicity, inequality and conflict in order to identify policies that could lead to more inclusive multi-ethnic societies.

A first book-length publication ‘Horizontal Inequalities and Conflict: Understanding Group Violence in Multi-Ethnic Societies’ from CRISE is slated for a July release, the fruit of the institution’s recent years of research into conflict and its causes.

To find out more about that research, IPS correspondent Michael Deibert spoke to CRISE Director Frances Stewart.

IPS: Can you explain the concept of horizontal inequalities?

Frances Stewart: Horizontal inequalities put people into groups and look at how unequal those groups are.

For example, black and white in the United States, or ethnic groups such as the Tutsi and Hutu in Rwanda, religious groups such as Muslims and Christians in many countries. Essentially, these groups are ways in which people see themselves, ways which are very important to people.

As a result, if there are big inequalities between the groups, for example between Muslims and Christians in a country like Nigeria, this can be very politically powerful because people mobilize behind (them). This mobilization can sometimes take a political, peaceful form, but it can sometimes take a violent form.

The other point to be made about horizontal inequalities is that they are multi-dimensional… This should be true of all measures of inequality, but most measures of inequality are confined to income, or perhaps consumption.

Horizontal inequalities have political, economic, social and cultural dimensions… Inequalities in political power, which are very important, where one group may have total dominance of the political system, and another group does not have any access, which is the situation more or less in Sri Lanka.

Then you have inequalities in religious or cultural status, so one group may have its religion or its language recognized and another group’s may not be recognized. Then of course there are the obvious economic differences in land and assets, and there are differences to social access, education and so on.

So essentially, horizontal inequalities are inequalities between culturally defined groups, and they are multi-dimensional.

IPS: The book covers a fairly wide geographic range — from Asia to Africa to Latin America — and I was wondering what were some of the similarities that were found that existed in the situations in these regions?

FS: There are obviously differences in the way people view themselves. For example, in Africa we have ethnic groups, sometimes called tribes, being a very important difference among people, and also religion. Interestingly, Indonesia is very similar in that respect to Nigeria, which also has many ethnicities and in addition has the religious divide between Muslims and Christians.

But in contrast, if we think about Latin America, in the countries that we looked at, the big difference is between the indigenous people and the white settlers, and of course the big mixed population.

This is rather different from the ethnic divisions that you find in Africa. Though within the indigenous communities themselves there are quite a number of groups with different languages and so on.

Then, if we turn to Malaysia, which is another country we were looking at, the racial divide is the big divide: Chinese, local Malays and then Indians and a religious difference, as well…

In each case, these horizontal inequalities are extremely important, thought not always recognized to be as important as they are. They are more explicit in some areas than in others.

IPS: It seems like the incidence of conflict in poor countries remain high. Is that a fair assessment?

FS: It is certainly fair. It’s certainly true that the incidence of conflict within countries — civil wars — is significantly higher in poor countries than it is in middle-income or rich countries.

Still we should note that it has been declining recently. It rose quite sharply when the Cold War ended, but recently there has been some decline. But it does remain a significant problem. Probably the majority of very poor countries have experienced some sort of conflict over the last quarter of a century.

IPS: Does the spike in conflicts that we saw after the Cold War now seem to be stabilizing?

FS: Definitely, there has been some reduction, and people have different explanations for that. Partly, there was an explosion after the Cold War because there was a transition, people were sorting out exactly how they wanted to live and with whom and so on … There had been conflicts before but they had been suppressed, by the Russians, in particular…

Why have they declined? Some people would say that the active intervention of the international community, and the United Nations in particular, has been quite important, but obviously not all of them…

In Afghanistan, the war is raging, the war is raging in Iraq, very serious wars still continue… The Congo war isn’t really over, there’s conflict going on in Niger. But I think the level is a little bit less than it was 10 years ago.

IPS: After reviewing this research, what steps can be taken by governments and international institutions to address these inequalities and prevent conflict in the future?

FS: This issue has been surpassingly neglected by the international community. If you look at the normal policies that we advocate, such as democracy, saying that countries have to be democratic and they have to have many parties, we don’t think about the implications between groups.

Democracy can lead to quite a dangerous situation in a multi-ethnic society unless you accompany it with policies to protect groups. If you have one group that is in a majority, they can really suppress the freedoms of a minority group.

On the political side, what it requires is recognition of the importance of distributing power across groups and not having exclusive power.

That means all sorts of constraints on the democratic system. Some of these are already in place in some countries. It could mean that political parties cannot be mono-ethnic and only located in one part of the country… There are restrictions on political parties in Ghana and Nigeria of that sort, to try and induce multi-ethnic political parties. There is a big tendency in multi-ethnic countries for political parties to become single ethnic parties.

You can also have restrictions on the political system at many other levels so that you must have representation from different groups in all sorts of politically important positions. Sometimes these restrictions can be formal, such as in Nigeria, or they can be informal… What one needs is a recognition on the political side of the need for incorporation of all major groups in the political power and then a variety of ways in which one might do it.

On economics, the issue has also been greatly neglected in the international arena. Most of the World Bank policies, for example — macroeconomic adjustment policies, strategy papers — simply ignore the issue…

What you need is an explicit recognition that you need fair distribution of economic and social resources. You need to have systems of monitoring it… Incorporate it into a variety of economic policies, for example public expenditure policies, tax policies, government employment policies and so on.

Although the international bodies have neglected this, national policy makers in multi-ethnic societies often recognise this because they have to live with the consequences…

We didn’t have to invent the new policies, we could simply look around the countries that had put them into effect.

America Is the Rogue Nation

America Is the Rogue Nation

by Charley Reese – June 28, 2008

One gets the impression that there are some people in Washington who believe that Israel or the U.S. can bomb Iran’s nuclear reactors, fly home, and it will be mission complete.

It makes you wonder if perhaps there is a virus going around that is gradually making people stupid. If we or Israel attack Iran, we will have a new war on our hands. The Iranians are not going to shrug off an attack and say, “You naughty boys, you.”

Consider how much trouble Iraq has given us. Some 4,000 dead and 29,000 wounded, a half a trillion dollars in cost and still climbing, and five years later, we cannot say that the country is pacified.

Iraq is a small country compared with Iran. Iran has about 70 million people. Its western mountains border the Persian Gulf. In other words, its missiles and guns look down on the U.S. ships below it. And it has lots of missiles, from short-range to intermediate-range (around 2,200 kilometers).

More to the point, it has been equipped by Russia with the fastest anti-ship missile on the planet. The SS-N-22 Sunburn can travel at Mach 3 at high altitude and at Mach 2.2 at low altitude. That is faster than anything in our arsenal.

Iran’s conventional forces include an army of 540,000 men and 300,000 reserves, including 120,000 Iranian Guards especially trained in unconventional warfare. It has more than 1,600 main battle tanks and 21,000 other armored combat vehicles. It has 3,200 artillery pieces, three submarines, 59 surface warships and 10 amphibious ships.

It’s been receiving help in arming itself from China, North Korea and Russia. Unlike Iraq, Iran’s forces have not been worn down with bombing, wars and sanctions. It also has a new anti-aircraft defense system from Russia that I’ve heard is pretty snazzy.

So, if you think we or Israel can attack Iran and not expect retaliation, I’d have to say with regret that you are a moron. If you think we could easily handle Iran in an all-out war, I’d have to promote you to idiot.

Attacking Iran would be folly, but we seem to be living in the Age of Folly. Morons and idiots took us into an unjustified war against Iraq before we had finished the job in Afghanistan. Now we have troops tied down in both countries.

For some years now, I’ve worried that we seem to be more and more like Colonial England arrogant, racist, overestimating our own capacity and underestimating that of our enemies. As the fate of the British Empire demonstrates, that is a fatal flaw.

The British never dreamed that the “little yellow people” could come ashore by land and take Singapore from the rear or that they would sink the pride of the British fleet, but they did both.

I suppose no one in Washington can imagine the Iranians sinking one of our carriers in the Persian Gulf. How’d you like to be the president who has to tell the American people that we’ve lost a carrier for the first time since World War II?

Exactly how the Iranians will respond to an attack, I don’t know, but they will respond. In keeping with our present policy, our attack on Iran would be illegal, since under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.

Who would have thought that we would become the rogue nation committing acts of aggression around the globe?

STOP BUYING LEGO PRODUCTS….!!!

Allahu Akbar!!!!!
Takbir! Takbir! Takbir!!!!!

Assalamualaikum. (We greet you in the Name of God. Peace be with you).

I refer you to the latest Lego “collection” recently launched in Denmark. As a law abiding Muslim who has respect for all other faiths, I wish you could start thinking about the actions of these “kafirs” (infidels, non-believers and mindless people who have no regard for other faiths and care even less if they should cause harm or inflict pain on others). Please inform ALL our Muslim Ummah to stop buying Danish products and boycott Lego products.

Will the onslaught against the Muslims ever stop? Nay! It seems the evil ones have aligned themselves with the Devil to try and bring shame on the Muslims and blaspheme our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him); little realizing that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) has been sent as a mercy unto all mankind (not only for the Muslims)… !

We ask all God-fearing people of the world, be they non-Muslim, Christian, Jewish or of any other faith, to condemn this type of action by the Danes (and in particular the Lego company) and distance themselves from the work of these evil doers. We ask you as a servant of God to distribute this e-mail message so the world can see the evil ways of these insane people.

God Almighty have mercy on us all!

Ahmadiyya / Qadiyanni’s are NOT Muslims

Greetings truth seekers: It is most important to speak out against those who call themselves Ahmadiyya and the followers of the apostate Mirza Ghulam Qadiani who continually insulted Prophet Jesus with many tirades (http://www.irshad.org/exposed/tirade2.php).

Mirza Ghulam used to say that cholera or plague is the sign of Allah’s wrath on mankind for their wrong doing!

It is fitting that his last words were the admission that he had been stricken with the disease he was so fearful of.

This group has for years attempted to gain legitimacy in the Muslim community, and most recently in Indonesia and also through a series of press releases in Canada, but it is important to study what they really teach. Every major scholar of Islam rejects this group and proclaims them non-Muslim (see: http://alhafeez.org/rashid/scholars.html). Please refer to the following links for tons of background information on this cult. Don’t be fooled by the big beards, Muslim sounding names and Indo-Pak so called “Sunnah” dress-code. Study and learn:

Dutch Islam critic meets foreign minister on charges in Jordan

Jun 26, 2008,

Amsterdam – Dutch Islam critic Geert Wilders praised Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen for taking Jordan’s decision to charge Wilders with incitement against Islam seriously, news reports said Thursday.

‘It speaks to his credit although I am not at all comfortable about the situation,’ the leader of the Dutch Freedom Party said Thursday, a day after talking with Verhagen.

Wilders had requested the meeting to discuss the consequences of a Jordan public prosecutor’s decision to charge him over his 16-minute political film Fitna, released late March.

In the film, Wilders expressed his concern about what he called the Islamization of the Netherlands and the spreading of Muslim fundamentalism in Europe.

The group that pressed charges against Wilders in Jordan calls itself the Messenger of Allah United Us.

Wilders said he and Verhagen discussed whether it was likely that another country that he might visit would extradite him to Jordan.

Theoretically, Jordan could file an extradition application through Interpol to a country that Wilders might visit.

Muslims attacked by rightists in Germany

Sun, 22 Jun 2008

http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/214120,muslims-attacked-by-rightists-in-germany.html

Berlin – Two young neo-Nazis wielding baseball bats attacked a group of Muslims on their way to a mosque in the eastern German state of Thuringia, police said Sunday. A 23-year-old required medical treatment for injuries to his arm after the attack on Saturday evening in Nordhausen, some 250 kilometres southwest of Berlin. The assailants fled after hurling verbal abuse at their victims from Morocco, Russia and Pakistan, a police spokesman said. Attacks on foreigners are not uncommon in the eastern part of Germany, where unemployment is high and right-wing groups have an easy time recruiting new members. In a case that made international headlines last year, a mob of Germans chased a group of Indians through the eastern town of Muegeln and tried to kick down the door of the restaurant where they sought sanctuary.

Radical Indian politician calls for Hindu suicide bombers to target Muslims

By Ramola Talwar-Badam
ASSOCIATED PRESS

June 19, 2008

MUMBAI, India – A radical right-wing Indian politician called on Hindus to form suicide bomber squads and attack Muslim neighborhoods – a threat promptly condemned by political friends and foes alike.

Bal Thackeray, a Hindu extremist linked to past waves of mob violence in the western state of Maharashtra, has long advocated attacks against Muslims. He said suicide bombers, along with bombs planted in Muslim neighborhoods, were needed “to protect the nation and all Hindus.”

“Islamic terrorism is on the rise. To combat this, Hindu terrorism must be created of similar strength,” Thackeray wrote in an editorial published Wednesday in Saamna, the newspaper of his Shiv Sena party. The editorial was unsigned, but his party said Thackerary wrote it.

“Hindu suicide squads must be built,” he wrote. “Only then will Hindus survive.”

Whether Thackerary was sincere or just trying to grab attention was impossible to tell.

His influence in Mumbai, his longtime power base, has been waning for years, but he still commands hordes of violent followers. He has been arrested twice for inflammatory speeches and writing, and officials said Thursday they were considering arresting him for a third time.

The Shiv Sena – which means Shiva’s Army – is among the most extreme of India’s Hindu political parties and held power in Mumbai from 1995 to 2000.

Indian authorities have blamed Islamic extremists for a spate of bombings that have killed hundreds of people in the predominantly Hindu country of 1.1 billion people in the past three years.

Thackeray’s editorial was promptly condemned by politicians from across the political spectrum, including India’s leading Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has long-standing ties with Shiv Sena.

“People should not take law into their hands,” BJP Vice President Venkaiah Naidu was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times newspaper. “There are democratic methods to address the problem of terrorism.”

Sub-Committee on International Human Rights votes to investigate persecution of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community

OTTAWA, June 18 /CNW/ – On June 17, 2008, submissions were made to the House of Commons Sub-Committee on International Human Rights on the persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan and Indonesia.

Mr. Mahdi, Missionary Incharge & Vice President of the Ahmadiyya Community in Canada, provided a comprehensive overview of the history of the persecution of the Ahmadiyya Community in Pakistan, a worldwide community dedicated to the principles of peace, interfaith dialogue, service to humanity and a non-violent interpretation of Jihad (holy struggle). Mr. Mahdi explained that these principles are deeply offensive to militant extremist mullahs and the reasons they target the Community for persecution. For example by simply referring to themselves as Muslims and their religion as Islam, and engaging in simple acts of worship and devotion, Ahmadis are charged with the offense of “posing as Muslims”, an act which the law considers offensive and insulting to “real” Muslims but only when committed by Ahmadis.

Not only do the militant extremists ultimately wish to achieve their goal of the eradication and genocide of the Ahmadis through their misinterpretations of Islam, but they are also determined to achieve the destruction of democratic institutions in Pakistan, Indonesia and other countries.

In his submissions, Mr. Siddiq, General Counsel of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Canada, stated that not only successive Pakistani governments placate and capitulate to the demands of militant extremist mullahs to deny Ahmadis their rights; the Supreme Court has provided justification for the imposition of the death penalty for peaceful Ahmadi religious practice.

Mr. Siddiq also provided a description of the nature of the persecution taking place in Indonesia describing it as akin to Pakistan in the 1970’s when the Ahmadiyya were first declared as non-Muslim. As both Pakistan and Indonesia are fragile democracies, Canada has an interest in encouraging these governments to resist the pressure and influence of militant extremist groups because these same groups are also bent on establishing their own oppressive Taliban-style governance.

After receiving the submissions and receiving responses to their questions, the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights passed a motion to further investigate the persecution of the Ahmadiyya Community in Pakistan and Indonesia and to make recommendations to the House of Commons Committee on Foreign Affairs.
