Are we Americans now barbarians and savages?

I am still reading Military Journal of the American Revolution by James Thacher MD , and came across the following passage on page 67 regarding military engagements between the colonists (our American forefathers) and the British during the Revolutionary War. These battles/skirmishes occurred around White Plains and the River Brunx- Thacher writes about some prisoners taken by the Americans:

“A number of Hessians and Waldeckers have fallen into our hands. The German officers and soldiers by a finesse of the British, to increase their ferocity, had been led to believe that Americans are savages and barbarians, and if taken, would have their bodies stuck full of pieces of dry wood and in that manner burnt to death. But they were very agreeably disappointed, and much pleased, on meeting civil and kind treatment.”

The front page of New York Times this week featured a story on the Israeli-Lebanese exchange of prisoners.  The headline tells us that Israeli wounds have been reopened; the accompanying pictures depict a startlingly child-like Lebanese assassin in police custody and two adorable Israeli children, the victims of a cross-border raid; the opening two paragraphs are devoted to the pain of Israeli family tragedies, nearly thirty years ago and now. Guantánamo children

Cori Crider, lawyer for Reprieve – Guardian

July 19, 2008

In a submission to the UN in May, the Pentagon said that no more than eight youths, aged 13 to 17 at time of capture, were held at Guantánamo Bay. But a prisoner list released in 2006 in response to US freedom of information act litigation names 21 inmates under 18 when they arrived. A separate defence department admission brings the total to 22. Testimonies collected by the charity Reprieve, which represents 30 inmates at Guantánamo, indicate the actual number is much higher.

Konferensi Keagamaan di Spanyol: Menghina Agama dan Simbol-Simbol Agama Adalah Tindak Kriminal

Sabtu, 19 Jul 08 12:59 WIB

A funny list of dumb laws in the United States : Illinois

“Dwarf-tossing,” the strange practice of hurling dwarfs in padded suits, is outlawed in the bars of Springfield, Ill., because it’s dangerous and exploitative. The practice is apparently allowed elsewhere in town, with a special permit.
• A law from the early 1900’s prohibits men from going topless on the Boardwalk. (Repealed)
• A state law in Illinois mandates that all bachelors should be called master, not mister, when addressed by their female counterparts.
• According to state law, it is illegal to speak English. The officially recognized language is “American”.
• An Illinois state law requires that a man’s female companion shall call him “master” while out on a date. The law does not apply to married couples.
• Champaign: One may not pee in his neighbor’s mouth.
• Chicago: Law forbids eating in a place that is on fire; It is illegal to give a dog whiskey; Kites may not be flown within the city limits; Spitting is forbidden
• Cicero: Humming on public streets is prohibited on Sundays.
