=== News Update ===

Recent press reports on developments with regard to last month’s attacks in Mumbai, India indicate the role of Dawood Ibrahim, a wanted crime boss, terrorist, and drug trafficker, is being downplayed, possibly the result of a deal taking place behind the scenes between the governments of the US, Pakistan, and India, to have others involved in the Mumbai attacks turned over while quietly diverting attention from a man who some say could reveal embarrassing secrets about the CIA’s involvement in criminal enterprises.

December 10, 2008

by Jeremy R. Hammond

The role in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai last month of an underworld kingpin that heads an organization known as D-Company, has known ties to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and who is alleged to have ties with the CIA is apparently being whitewashed, suggesting that his capture and handover to India might prove inconvenient for either the ISI or the CIA, or both.

It was Dawood Ibrahim who was initially characterized by press reports as being the mastermind behind the attacks. Now, that title of “mastermind” is being given to Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi by numerous media accounts reporting that Pakistan security forces have raided a training camp of the group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which evidence has indicated was behind the attacks. Lakhvi was reportedly captured in the raid and is now in custody.

Previously in this series, I explained how we know that last month’s attacks in Mumbai, India, were a well-coordinated false-flag commando raid, and I wrote:

In reality-based situations […] the analysis of such a horrible crime would begin with the known facts, and it would proceed in a systematic fashion, from the knowns to the unknowns.

We could turn to stone waiting for mainstream analysts to do this, so we may as well do it ourselves.

Two Federal judges have deliberately invoked secrecy statutes to conceal the Federal government’s illegal use of torture, a prominent legal authority says.

Named are judges Terence Boyle of the U.S. District Court of Eastern North Carolina, and T.S. Ellis III of the U.S. District Court of Eastern District of Virginia, both nominees of President Ronald Reagan.

9/11 families denounce Guantanamo trials

By Jane Sutton

Thu 11 Dec 2008, 7:18 GMT

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) – Two dozen people who lost loved ones in the September 11 attacks issued a statement on Wednesday denouncing the Guantanamo war crimes trials as illegitimate, shameful and politically motivated.

Their criticism came in response to passionate praise for the Guantanamo tribunals from other victims’ relatives, whom the Pentagon brought to the remote U.S. naval base in Cuba this week to observe pretrial hearings for five prisoners charged with plotting the September 11 attacks.

“These prosecutions have been politically motivated from the start, are designed to ensure quick convictions at the expense of due process and transparency, and are structured to prevent the revelation of abusive interrogations and torture engaged in by the U.S. government,” said the 24 relatives who signed Wednesday’s statement, which was distributed through the American Civil Liberties Union.

Musicians to U.S.: Stop Using Our Songs to Torture Prisoners

By Rosie Swash, The Guardian. Posted December 11, 2008.

The list of bands whose music is used to torture prisoners in Guantanamo Bay reads like a grim roll call of American pop culture. Metallica, Britney Spears and even the Sesame Street theme tune have all been blasted into cells at Camp X-Ray, with the intention of traumatizing and destabalizing its inhabitants. But a new anti-torture initiative called Stop The Music Torture is hoping to bring an end to the technique by gathering the support of musicians whose songs are used in controversial interrogation techniques by U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.

Report Confirms Torture at Guantanamo

Becky Akers

December 10, 2008

Last month, a consortium of human-rights groups from the University of California at Berkeley released a report entitled Guantanamo and Its Aftermath: U.S. Detention and Interrogation Practices and Their Impact on Detainees [pdf]. Its 136 pages prove in dispassionate prose allegations that Americans passionately debate: the U.S. government imprisoned mostly innocent men, without trial or criminal charges, at its prison in Guantanamo Bay, abused a great many of them, and tortured some.

Because a notoriously left-wing university sponsored the report, apologists for the Bush administration may dismiss it. They do so unjustly. Studies of human beings and an event’s “impact” on them can never be purely objective, but this investigation comes as close as possible to pursuing and distilling the truth. For that we can thank its rigorous methodology, scrupulous reporting, and a style “devoid of rhetoric,” as “the Honorable Patricia M. Wald” says in her forward.

Uranium Weapons in Afghanistan: The Silent Genocide

By Christoph R. Hörstel*

A special issue in the field of war crimes committed by occupation forces in Afghanistan are so-called uranium weapons (1). Uranium is a heavy metal – annd, as a consequence, has an extremely strong armour piercing effect. Since dirt-poor Afghanistan clearly cannot afford the luxury of any special armour-plating, the question has to be asked: what purpose does the use of such specialised weaponry serve when the military necessity is questionable?

Weapons grade uranium is, for the most part, extracted from burnt down fuel rods and contains roughly 60% of the radioactivity of elemental uranium. In addition, it can also contain traces of plutionum-239. This uranium rates as slightly radioactive and its disposal or storage is costly. In this respect, military usage is a very economical solution. When such weaponry is put to use two effects manifest themselves: one radioactive and one chemotoxic. Both effects endanger, alongside enemy forces, not only one’s own soldiers, but also the local population as well.

Bush Says Saddam Hussein Was Not Connected to 9/11

Bush Says Saddam Hussein Was Not Connected to 9/11

Gary Benoit

December 10, 2008

Addressing the Saban Forum on December 5, President George W. Bush stated: “It is true, as I’ve said many times, that Saddam Hussein was not connected to the 9/11 attacks.”

Really? Well, Bush has acknowledged in the past that Saddam Hussein did not attack us on 9/11. For example, in response to a question on September 17, 2003, Bush stated: “We’ve had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with the September 11th [attacks].”

But how frequently did Bush make this acknowledgement? Not often, at least not publlcly. Instead, he repeatedly (and much more memorably) juxtaposed references to the 9/11 terror attacks to those of Saddam Hussein, thereby helping to create the false impression that Saddam Hussein was connected to 9/11.

For instance, on January 31, 2003, President Bush stated: “The strategic view of America changed after September the 11th. We must deal with threats before they hurt the American people again. And as I have said repeatedly, Saddam Hussein would like nothing more than to use a terrorist network to attack and to kill and leave no fingerprints behind.”

Britain leaves Iraq in shame. The US won’t go so quietly

Seumas Milne

Obama was elected on the back of revulsion at Bush’s war, but greater pressure will be needed to force a full withdrawal

December 10, 2008

If British troops are indeed withdrawn from Iraq by next June, it will signal the end of the most shameful and disastrous episode in modern British history. Branded only last month by Lord Bingham, until recently Britain’s most senior law lord, as a “serious violation of international law”, the aggression against Iraq has not only devastated an entire country and left hundreds of thousands dead – it has also been a political and military humiliation for the invading powers.

In the case of Britain, which marched into a sovereign state at the bidding of an extreme and reckless US administration, the war has been a national disgrace which has damaged the country’s international standing. Britain’s armed forces will withdraw from Iraq with dishonour. Not only were they driven from Basra city last summer under cover of darkness by determined resistance, just as British colonial troops were forced out of Aden 40 years ago – and Iraq and Afghanistan, among other places, before that. But they leave behind them an accumulation of evidence of prisoner beatings, torture and killings, for which only one low-ranking soldier, Corporal Payne, has so far been singled out for punishment.

EU awards Israel for starving Gazans, expanding colonies

By Khalid Amayreh in occupied East Jerusalem

11 December, 2008

On Monday, 8 December, European Union (EU) foreign ministers decided to boost relations with the apartheid state of Israel.

The decision opens the way towards a first-ever EU-Israel summit in the coming months, perhaps during the Czech Republic’s presidency of the bloc, in the first half of 2009.

The EU will also consider inviting Israel to participate in the civilian missions linked to its security and defense policy.

Czech officials have pointed out that upgrading EU-Israeli relations will be one the Czech Republic’s main priorities when it takes over the EU presidency from France in January.

Russia courts the Muslim world
By Jacques Lévesque

Vladimir Putin was the first head of a non-Muslim majority state to speak at the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, a gathering of 57 Muslim states, in October 2003. That was a political and diplomatic feat, especially since Russia was waging a long-running war in Chechnya at the time. Putin stressed that 15% of the total population of the Russian Federation are Muslim (1), and that all the inhabitants of eight of its 21 autonomous republics are Muslim (2), and he won observer member status with the organisation, thanks to support from Saudi Arabia and Iran.
