WWII-Era Mass Grave Believed to Contain 1,800 Germans

Monday, January 12, 2009

WARSAW, Poland —  Construction workers in northern Poland have unearthed a World War II-era mass grave containing what are believed to be the bodies of 1,800 German men, women and children who disappeared during the Soviet Army’s march to Berlin.

Poles digging at the site of a planned luxury hotel in Malbork — which was called Marienburg and was part of Germany during the war — excavated a bomb crater at the foot of the city’s famous 13th century Teutonic Knights fortress, authorities said Monday.

The workers found a small group of bodies in late October and halted digging to allow prosecutors to investigate. After resuming work weeks later, the workers turned up dozens, and then hundreds, more corpses. They believe more may be found.

It was not immediately clear how the bodies ended up in the crater but initial examinations by Polish and German experts have concluded that they are likely the remains of German citizens still classified as “missing” more than 60 years after the end of the war, town official Piotr Szwedowski told The Associated Press.

Millions of civilians were killed or declared missing during World War II. Many of those who disappeared in the chaos of wartime Europe are still unaccounted for.

Turley: Most people abroad will view Bush as a war criminal

David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Published: Tuesday January 20, 2009

Barack Obama has now been inaugurated as president, and the fear expressed by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Monday night that George Bush might issue last-minute pardons of administration officials involved in torture, possibly including himself, has not come to pass.

However, the torture issue itself is not going to go away so easily. As Maddow also noted, “The calls for a reckoning are growing by the day — and not just from progressives outside the government.”

“Do you think that Obama and his team realized how hot an issue this would become and would stay?” Maddow asked Constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley.

Who’s who in the Obama cabinet
Internal security

Tom Eley

Jan 20, 2009

This is the second in a series of profiles of the major appointees to the cabinet and top White House staff of Barack Obama. Part one, “Who’s who in the Obama cabinet—Economic and budget policy was posted January 19.

President-elect Obama has assembled a cabinet drawn from the upper echelons of American society and the right wing of the Democratic Party. The right-wing character of the Obama nominees is described by the media under the approving labels of “centrist,” “moderate,” and—most of all—”pragmatic.” This terminology signifies that the incoming Obama team consists entirely of individuals who pass muster with the corporate financial aristocracy.

The New York Times reported Monday that Obama has repeatedly discussed his cabinet selections with his defeated Republican opponent, Senator John McCain, and that McCain has told colleagues “that many of these appointments he would have made himself,” according to Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and arch-conservative who has also had input into the formation of the new administration.

McCain, Graham and Co. have a far greater role in the selection of Obama’s cabinet than the millions of young people and working people who supported Obama in the belief that he would put an end to the war in Iraq and reverse the right-wing, pro-big business policies of the Bush administration.

Today’s series of profiles deals with those cabinet and other high-ranking officials in the incoming administration responsible for the Justice Department, intelligence and Homeland Security—i.e., the domestic repressive functions of the US government.

The Taliban are claiming they control 70 per cent of rural Afghanistan and have instituted a shadow government with their own police, courts and rule of law.

The boast comes in the days leading up to Barack Obama’s inauguration as U.S. president, who is planning on dramatically ratcheting up America’s military presence in Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s claim is being dismissed by many inside Afghanistan as empty rhetoric, but there is little denying that their presence is expanding.

Palestinians wave Hamas flags in Gaza in victory celebrations

Thousands of Palestinians stage a massive rally in the Gaza Strip to celebrate the Hamas government’s dramatic victory over Israel.

The people of Gaza poured to the streets to celebrate the resistance that their democratically-elected government displayed during a 22-day war with Israel and its heavily armed military.

The demonstrators celebrated by waving Hamas flags and shouting slogans in support of the movement, as the Israel army said that it had withdrawn all its forces from the coastal region.

On Monday, senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniya said Israeli offensive into Gaza was a failure for Tel Aviv and a victory for Palestinians, who were able to withstand the Israeli onslaught.

Depopulation, Destruction and Displacement of the Palestinian People
Al Nakba Redux

Stephen Lendman

Jan 21, 2009

For Palestinians, the Nakba “Catastrophe” is their “Holocaust” six-month slaughter and displacement before and after the May 1948 establishment of Israel. In December 1947, Jews in Palestine numbered 600,000 compared to 1.3 million Palestinians. David Ben-Gurion ordered them removed and for “Every attack….to end with occupation, destruction and expulsion.”

He meant depopulation, destruction, mass slaughter, displacement, and erasing a proud people’s history. Palestine was to become Israel. Most of the job was completed, more in 1967, and thereafter incrementally until total dispossession is achieved. Gaza is the latest battleground. More ahead is planned. The struggle for liberation continues.

In all respects, Gaza’s situation is dysfunctional and calamitous. Consider the dire medical state alone.

Israel denies medical teams, food supplies entry to Gaza

Wed, 21 Jan 2009 12:01:19 GMT

Israel has denied Human Rights Watch and aid agencies entry to the Gaza Strip as Palestinians grapple with a shortage of vital supplies.

Israeli officials on Wednesday refused to allow prominent European medical teams and Human Rights Watch representatives to cross the border into the beleaguered strip.

Gazans, meanwhile, are in dire need of humanitarian aid following a three-week long Israeli onslaught on the costal sliver, said Press TV correspondent Akram al-Sattari at the Rafah border crossing.

Gaza hospitals are also running out of fuel supplies while they had to take measures to continue providing service to the thousands of people who have been injured in Israeli attacks.

According to our correspondent, only four truck loads of aid supplies have so far crossed the border into the Gaza Strip.

Israel has admitted – after mounting pressure – that its troops may have used white phosphorus shells in contravention of international law, during its three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip.

One of the places most seriously affected by the use of white phosphorus was the main UN compound in Gaza City, which was hit by three shells on 15 January. The same munition was used in a strike on the al-Quds hospital in Gaza City the same day.

Under review by Colonel Shai Alkalai is the use of white phosphorus by a reserve paratroop brigade in northern Israel.

Cast Lead: F16 strike kills 16 family members, 11 children

Cast Lead: F16 strike kills 16 family members, 11 children

The latest figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health indicate that, 1,314 Palestinians have been killed – including 412 children – and at least 5,300 injured – including 1,855 children – in Operation Cast Lead. DCI-Palestine has confirmed the deaths of 98 children, and is in the process of investigating a further 171 reports of child fatalities.

On Thursday, 1 January 2009 in the afternoon, F16 aircrafts were crisscrossing the sky above northern Gaza, firing sound bombs. Mohammad Rayyan (22) told DCI-Palestine that his father, Nizar Rayyan, was at home in the al-Khulafa al-Rashedin neighbourhood of Jabalia camp, northern Gaza.

When he saw the F16s, Mohammad grew worried and called his father, a Hamas leader, on his mobile phone to check on him and on the rest of the family. His father, mother, three step-mothers, as well as 11 of his siblings (all under 18) were all gathered together to watch television.

Nizar Rayyan reassured his son, telling him that their neighbours, the Abu al-Jbain, had received a telephone warning from the Israeli army to evacuate their house, but that they had not. It seems that Nizar did not think his house would come under attack.

Less than five minutes later, Mohammad heard three successive explosions in the al-Khulafa al-Rashedin neighbourhood, seemingly caused by missiles fired from an F16. He was approximately 300 metres away. He ran towards his father’s house, and found the five-storey building in rubble. Two adjacent houses had also been completely demolished, and a few surrounding houses had been damaged.

PRCS and civil defence paramedics were already on the scene. They managed to recover the bodies of 14 members of the Rayyan family. Ghassan (16) and Zainab (8) remained under rubble until the following day. In total, 16 members of the Rayyan family were killed in the strike, including 11 children:

  • Asad Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (1)
  • Aysha Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (2)
  • Osama iben Zaid Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (2)
  • Halima Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (4)
  • Reem Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (4)
  • Abed al-Rahman Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (5)
  • Zainab Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (8)
  • Maryam Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (9)
  • Aya Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (11)
  • Abed al-Qader Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (11)
  • Ghassan Nizar Abed al-Qader Rayyan (16)

According to hospital sources, the attack injured another 46 children; 16 of them were treated for shock.

The 16 members of the Rayyan family were killed in what appears to be a planned targeted assassination of the Hamas leader Nizar Rayyan, as three missiles were launched successively onto his house without warning. His neighbours, however, had been warned by the Israeli army in time to evacuate their house.

DCI-Palestine denounces the Israeli army’s reckless use of lethal force and its complete disregard for the law of armed conflict. Those who planned and carried out this attack must have known that the use of such military power on a civilian building would cause a large number of civilian casualties. Furthermore, the Rayyan family was not engaged in hostilities at the time of the strike; they were not posing any threat to Israel. Had Nizar Rayyan been armed, the launch of three missiles onto his family home, with the expected result of killing his entire family, could never be legitimised by military necessity. There can be no legal justification for this deadly attack.

DCI-Palestine welcomes the ceasefire. However, ending the assault is not enough. More needs to be done to ensure the protection of surviving children and their families in Gaza. More needs to be done to bring them justice and prevent further attacks.  DCI-Palestine demands:

  • Urgent humanitarian intervention and support to provide for the needs of children injured, displaced, and otherwise affected by the military offensive, as well as their families.
  • An independent investigation into each incident involving civilian fatalities during Operation Cast Lead, and prompt prosecution in accordance with international law of those found responsible for ordering, planning and carrying into effect war crimes.
  • The immediate and permanent lifting of Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip to allow the free flow of goods and services in and out of the territory.
  • The annulment of the upgrade of EU-Israel bi-lateral relations approved by the EU-Israel Association Council on 16 June 2008.

Israeli Troops Shoot Gaza Farmer in First Apparent Post-War Killing

By: antiwar on: 21.01.2009 [07:01 ]

Posted January 20, 2009

Bodies continued to be pulled from the rubble that used to be the cities of the Gaza Strip today, and the death toll in Israel’s 22-day way has now passed 1,400. 5,500 others were also wounded. In addition, two children in Gaza City were killed when they found an unexploded shell from the conflict. .

In what appears to be the first deliberate post-war killing, Israeli forces opened fire on a Palestinian farmer in the Northern Gaza Strip, killing him. The farmer was reportedly returning to his farm near the border to assess the damage done to it during the war when the troops shot him.

Israel is reportedly allowing an increased, though still limited, number of humanitarian aid trucks to enter the stricken strip. Today around 150 trucks were allowed in, though Israeli Welfare Minister Isaac Herzog says he hopes the number will eventually be raised to 500. The Israeli military has blamed Hamas for the limited amount of aid being allowed in, accusing them of violating the ceasefire.
