State Restrictions on Religious Dress for Teachers Target Muslim Women

February 26, 2009

(Berlin) – German state bans on religious symbols and clothing for teachers and other civil servants discriminate against Muslim women who wear the headscarf, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

The 67-page report, “Discrimination in the Name of Neutrality: Headscarf Bans for Teachers and Civil Servants in Germany,” is based on extensive research over an eight-month period. It analyzes the human rights implications of the bans and their effect on the lives of Muslim women teachers, including those who have been employed for many years. It says that the bans have caused some women to give up their careers or to leave Germany, where they have lived all their lives.

“These laws in Germany clearly target the headscarf, forcing women who wear it to choose between their jobs and their religious beliefs,” said Haleh Chahrokh, researcher in the Europe and Central Asia division at Human Rights Watch. “They discriminate on the grounds of both gender and religion and violate these women’s human rights.”

Dutch Foe of Islam Ignores US Allies’ Far Right Ties

By Daniel Luban and Eli Clifton*

WASHINGTON, Feb 28 (IPS) – The fiercely anti-Islam Dutch MP Geert Wilders has been traveling through the U.S. this week on a highly-publicised trip to meet with politicians, promote his controversial film ‘Fitna’, and raise money for his legal defence back home.

Although Wilders’s stated goal has been to campaign for free speech, his trip has been sponsored and promoted by an unlikely coalition of groups united primarily by their hostility towards Islam. His backers include neoconservative and right-wing Jewish groups on the one hand and figures with ties to the European far right on the other.

Since he was charged with incitement to hate and discrimination in the Netherlands in January and denied entry to Britain earlier this month on public safety grounds, Wilders has become something of a cause celebre for the U.S. right.

Engaging Hamas: Will History Repeat Itself?

By Ramzy Baroud March 1, 2009

The political outcomes of the Gaza war are yet to be entirely decided with any degree of certainty. However, the obvious political repositioning which was reported as soon as Israel declared its unilateral ceasefire promised that Israel’s deadly bombs would shape a new political reality in the region.

In the aftermath, Hamas can confidently claim that its once indisputably ‘radical’ political position is no longer viewed as too extreme. “Hamas” is no longer menacing a word, even amongst Western public, and tireless Israeli attempts to correlate Hamas and Islamic Jihadists’s agendas no longer suffice.

Appeal for the removal of Hamas from the EU terror list!

Saturday, 28 February 2009

First signataries

On the occasion of the June 2009 European elections, we are launching an urgent appeal to all candidates for the 736 seats in the European parliament.

We ask that they actively pursue the immediate and unconditional removal of Hamas and all other Palestinian liberation organizations from the European list of proscribed terrorist organizations.

We further ask that they acknowledge the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and, by so doing, recognise, Hamas as a legitimate voice for the Palestinian people’s aspirations for national liberation.

***

The initiative was launched by Nadine Rosa-Rosso, a teacher and independent communist militant living in Bruxelles. It is a result of the Beirut Resistance Forum from 16-18 January 2009.

The call can be signed by sending a message to camp@antiimperialista.org.

Challenging Zionist Indoctrination: Birthright Israel “Unplugged”

Open to both Jews and non-Jews, Birthright Unplugged takes participants to see the devastating effects that Zionist colonization
There are few international educational trips that can boast a higher participant rate. In just under 10 years, Birthright Israel has flown over 200, 000 young Jews to Israel for a 10 day adventure of touring, partying and a good dose of Zionist indoctrination.

Despite a significant drop in funding this year, that number is sure to grow by the thousands again in 2009.

How do they do it? For starters, it’s free. So long as you identify as Jewish, have never been on an organized tour of Israel, and are between the ages of 18-26, you qualify.

What’s the catch? Well, there really isn’t one. Participants are not required to buy anything or move to Israel and join the army, nor are they force-fed with political lectures and religious tirades. All they need to do is accept an all-expenses-paid “gift” of a seemingly apolitical, non-religious tour. Who wouldn’t accept?

Beneath the surface, however, these “gifts” are indeed politically motivated. Funded by the Israeli government, the Jewish Agency for Israel and wealthy Zionist philanthropists including Charles Bronfman and Sheldon Adelman, the trips are intended in large part to foster support amongst Diaspora Jewish youth for the continued existence of Israel as a “Jewish state” and to ensure a new generation of Israel supporters who can take over the reins from their parents and grandparents.

US missile strike kills eight in Pakistan

AFP

March 1, 2009

PESHAWAR, Pakistan : At least eight militants were killed Sunday in a suspected US missile strike which destroyed a Taliban hide-out in northwest Pakistan, security officials said.

Top US military and defence officials refused to confirm or deny the attack, but said Washington was determined to counter militants operating along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan.

“Two missiles fired by a suspected US drone hit a compound in Sararogha, in tribal South Waziristan region, killing at least eight suspected militants,” a Pakistani official told AFP.
