Peran “Lawrence Of Arabia” di Balik Berdirinya Kerajaan Saudi

Kyrgyzstan, a predominantly Muslim country in Central Asia, has banned head scarves from schools to protect children from religious influence, an official said Tuesday. “We are a secular state,” the official, Damira Kudaibergenova of the Education Ministry, said. She added that some pupils were missing their Friday classes because of prayers.

7.3 million in the US prison system

By Kate Randall
4 March 2009

A study released this week by the Pew Center on the States delivers a staggering statistic: 7.3 million Americans-or 1 in every 31 adults-are in the nation’s prison system. This figure includes those in US jails and prisons, on parole, on probation, or under other forms of correctional supervision.

No other country comes close to matching this number. If these individuals were grouped together, they would number more than the entire populations of Israel or Honduras, or all of the residents of Washington state.

The new study “One in 31: The Long Reach of American Corrections,” follows a study by the Pew Center last year that found the US leading the world in the rate at which it puts its people behind bars: 1 in 100, or 2.3 million people.

Sunni Guerrillas at Mosul Kill a US Soldier

Kirkuk Council Member Predicts Permanent US Base in Kirkuk

Guerrillas in the northern city of Mosul on Tuesday subjected a US military base to a barrage of mortar fire, killing a US soldier. The guerrillas successfully targeted a mililtary counter-insurgency office intended to deal with the guerrillas. That move shows that they have infiltrated the base and have someone on the inside telling them where key offices are.

al-Zaman reports in Arabic that the arrival of United Nations counselors in Kirkuk with an aim of compiling a list of ‘original’ inhabitants of the city has provoked a wave of assassinations in the disputed city.

Political and military leaders are scrambling to redefine the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan, now in its seventh year, as the situation spirals out of control in the face of a rapidly strengthening insurgency. The primary goal may no longer be securing victory, but rather avoiding a catastrophic, humiliating defeat.

Israel’s crimes in Gaza

March 3, 2009Having returned from Gaza, I am trying to come to terms with what I saw, what I heard and honestly, what I don’t think I will ever understand — the justification. While Israel’s recent offensive has been the most egregious of any historical attack upon the Palestinians in Gaza, it is just that, one of many. Gaza has been under Israeli bombardment and sanctions for decades. Prior to the Israeli pullout in 2005, Gaza was under complete Israeli control and occupation. Nearly 8,000 Israeli settlers occupied 40 percent of Gaza while the 1.5 million Palestinians occupied the remaining 60 percent. Settlements were located on the most fertile lands and along Gaza’s beautiful coastal regions and checkpoints prevented Palestinian mobility. Despite being one-fifth the size of Rhode Island, 25 miles long and 4 to 7.5 miles wide, Gaza was divided into three sections and Palestinians had to pass through multiple checkpoints to get from one section to the next. Often Israeli forces would close these checkpoints and not allow the Palestinians access to the other regions in Gaza as a form of collective punishment.

“The Ultimate Aim is the Transfer of Arab-Israelis”

Ethnic Cleansing and Israel

By CONN HALLINAN

One of the more disturbing developments in the Middle East is a growing consensus among Israelis that it would acceptable to expel—in the words of advocates “transfer”—its Arab citizens to either a yet as unformed Palestinian state or the neighboring countries of Jordan and Egypt.

Such sentiment is hardly new among Israeli extremists, and it has long been advocated by racist Jewish organizations like Kach, the party of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, as well as groups like the National Union, which doubled its Knesset representation in the last election.

No Mention of Aid to Israel in Budget, Thank President Obama

Take Action: No Mention of Aid to Israel in Budget, Thank President Obama

March 2, 2009

Last Thursday, President Obama sent his FY2010 budget outline to Congress and we were pleasantly surprised to see that it contained no mention of military aid to Israel.

To read the budget outline, click here. (Skip ahead to p.87 for the section on the Department of State and other international programs.)

Last Tuesday, President Obama addressed a joint session of Congress to explain his budget outline. His only reference to Israel was a reiteration of his Administration’s priority “To seek progress toward a secure and lasting peace between Israel and her neighbors”. To read President Obama’s remarks to Congress, click here.

Does this mean that President Obama will not include $2.775 billion in military aid to Israel when he delivers his actual detailed budget request to Congress in April as expected? That’s highly doubtful.

But the absence of any mention of it in the budget outline or the President’s address to Congress does mean that military aid to Israel is becoming a political liability, something that is now downplayed and no longer trumpeted.

If our analysis is correct, then what accounts for this shift? Undoubtedly it is our growing movement to hold Israel accountable for its misuse of U.S. weapons to commit horrific human rights abuses against Palestinians.

Since last Monday, together we have sent more than 7,000 letters to President Obama calling for an investigation into Israel’s misuse of U.S. weapons and a reconsideration of budget requests for more weapons. More letters have been sent by supporters of the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, Progressive Democrats of America, United for Peace and Justice, the Council for the National Interest, and others, in a coordinated campaign that we organized.

On a related note, we also attended a Capitol Hill briefing by Rep. Barney Frank last Tuesday. Rep. Frank has a great proposal to cut military spending by 25%. Unfortunately, when we challenged him on reining in spending on military aid to Israel and holding it accountable for its misuse of U.S. weapons, he ducked our question. Watch the short video on the left.

Keep up the pressure-it’s working!-by taking action below.

TAKE ACTION

1. Thank President Obama for not including military aid to Israel in his budget outline.

Send a letter to the President today asking him to investigate Israel’s prior misuses of U.S. weapons against Palestinians and to reconsider his anticipated request for additional weapons in his upcoming detailed budget. To send your letter, please click here.

2. Organize to challenge U.S. military aid to Israel in your community. Even as we begin to see glimmers of hope that the United States is considering changing its policy of unconditional support for Israel and holding it accountable for its human rights abuses of Palestinians, we have to organize on a long-term, sustained basis to make this happen.

Since February 2008, we have sent more than 1,000 organizing packets to people and organizations all over the country to educate and mobilize people in their communities to challenge military aid to Israel. Check out our Google map below showing the locations where people are organizing.

Sign up today as a volunteer organizer with us and we’ll send you an organizing packet complete with postcards, petitions, and fact sheets.

Sign up today!

3. Learn more about U.S. military aid to Israel and its dire impact on Palestinians. Watch our recent Capitol Hill policy briefing, “Armed and Dangerous: Weapons Transfers to Israel during the Bush Administration,” and download a PowerPoint presentation on the topic by clicking here.

Also, be sure to read Amnesty International’s report, “Fueling Conflict: Foreign Arms Supplies to Israel/Gaza,” released on February 23. In the report, Amnesty International details the role U.S. weapons played in Israel’s recent war on the occupied Gaza Strip and calls for an arms embargo.

Finally, check out this Huffington Post article by Robert Naiman of Just Foreign Policy, entitled, “Conditioning Part of U.S. Aid to Israel on Implementation of U.S. Policy.”

4. Make a tax-deductible contribution to support this work. If you value the work that we do to challenge U.S. military aid to Israel, then please consider making a generous one-time contribution or join our Olive Branch Club and make a recurring monthly donation.

Islamic Jihad: We will retaliate against Israel for airstrike in Gaza

The Islamic Jihad vowed that it would retaliate against Israel for the IAF air strike earlier Wednesday evening which targeted a senior commander in the group as he was driving in Gaza.

“The [attempted] assassination points to the fact that the Zionist entity is not interested in calm,” the group said in a statement. “Therefore, [Israel should] expect our reaction, and more rockets.”

“This crime will not pass without a response,” the group warned.

Hamas condemns international warrant for the arrest of Bashir

Palestinian Information Center

March 4, 2009

DAMASCUS, (PIC)– Hamas on Wednesday strongly condemned the international criminal court’s decision to arrest Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir for alleged war crimes in Darfur region west of the Sudan.

Hamas in a statement commenting on the decision said that the Arab, Islamic and foreign countries should refuse to deal with it.

It declared full support for Bashir and the Sudan in confrontation with this “American-Zionist targeting”, pointing out that the UN was once again proving that it had turned into a tool in the hands of the super powers topped by the USA.

The decision proves that the court is biased in favor of the colonialist powers and its double standards, the Movement charged.

Hamas said that the international court should have rather issued warrants of arrest against the Israeli war criminals such as Ehud Olmert, Tzipi Livni, Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu among other “senior war criminals” who have committed heinous massacres against the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples

It is an insult to justice and it is a demonstration of the Euro-American justice which caused destruction in Iraq, Afghanistan and Gaza.”
