The World’s Top 10 Public Intellectuals

Foreign Policy, the award-winning magazine of global politics, and Britain ‘s Prospect magazine have conducted a global public poll to pick the world’s top intellectuals and thinkers who are shaping the tenor of our time with their ideas. Over the past four weeks, more than 50,000 people voted for their top choices from the original long list of 100 figures. Muslim scholars, politicians, economists, scientists and scholars from around the world are topping the list of the world’s Top 20 Public Intellectuals unveiled on Monday, June 23. “The top 10 public intellectuals (listed below) in this year’s reader poll are all Muslim,” the American magazine Foreign Policy said announcing the list.

He has kept a relatively low profile since settling in the United States in 1999, having fled Turkey after being accused of undermining secularism.

CIA destroyed 12 harsh interrogation tapes

Court documents show CIA destroyed 12 harsh interrogation videotapes

Mar 06, 2009 19:08 EST

The CIA destroyed a dozen videotapes of harsh interrogations of terror suspects, according to documents filed Friday in a lawsuit over the government’s treatment of detainees. The 12 tapes were part of a larger collection of 92 videotapes of terror suspects that the CIA destroyed. The extent of the tape destruction was disclosed through a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the government.

Heavily redacted papers filed in the case indicate a dozen destroyed tapes show so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques.”

The CIA’s enhanced interrogation methods are secret, but they once included waterboarding, which simulates drowning.

Amnesty found evidence that U.S.-made white phosphorus weapons were used against civilians in Gaza

Amnesty found evidence that U.S.-made white phosphorus weapons were used against civilians in Gaza.

Support our investigation into war crimes in Gaza and southern Israel.

Dear muslim in,

Last week, I told you about new, powerful evidence uncovered by Amnesty, that the Israeli army used U.S.-made white phosphorus munitions in densely-populated residential areas during its war in Gaza in January.

White phosphorus is a controversial weapon that causes painful burns on the skin, and in most cases remains dangerous to humans long after its initial use.

Please support our investigative work in the Gaza conflict by making a tax-deductible donation today.

Because we do not accept funding from any government, your financial support is what makes our hard-hitting, independent investigations possible.

While white phosphorus is not a prohibited weapon under the laws of war, Amnesty International considers its use in densely-populated civilian areas a form of indiscriminate attack and a possible war crime. And our experts found these shell remains and other weapons all over Gaza — on the streets, on school playygrounds, in hospitals and in people’s homes. In fact, white phosphorus was still burning in residential areas throughout Gaza days after the ceasefire came into effect on January 18th — up to three weeks after these artillery shells had been fired.

Help us keep up the pressure on the U.S. State Department to investigate attacks with U.S. weapons on civilians, health care workers and UN humanitarian aid sites in Gaza, and hold accountable those responsible for these human rights violations.

Our team discovered artillery shells containing white phosphorus across a densely populated area in Gaza. In one home, they found the shell fragments that had killed Hanan al-Najjar, a mother of four, who had taken refuge with her family in a relative’s home. The shell smashed through the roof and hit Hanan in the chest, killing her instantly. Artillery shells were also found in numerous other homes in the area. In addition, AI researchers traveled to southern Israel where they researched the indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups.

We urgently need your support to continue our campaign to investigate possible violations of the laws of war by Israel, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups during the recent conflict, put pressure on the U.S. State Department to investigate the misuse of U.S.-made weapons in Gaza, and impose a global arms embargo on all parties in the conflict until a full investigation has been completed.

Your tax-deductible donation of $35, $50, $500 — whatever you can afford — will help us ks keep up the pressure and continue our investigations in Gaza, southern Israel and other crises around the world.

Thank you for your continued commitment to exposing injustice and defending human rights.

Larry Cox Sincerely,

Larry Cox
Executive Director
Amnesty International USA

US Blames Afghan Weather for Taliban Success

US Blames Afghan Weather for Taliban Success

After Most Violent Year Since the War Began, Can a Violent Winter Really Be Blamed on Lack of Snow?

March 6, 2009

Considering 2008 was the most violent year in Afghanistan since the 2001 American invasion and predictions that 2009 would be even worse, it hardly seems a shock that the winter of 2008-09 has been quite a bit more violent than normal. Yet Colonel Pete Johnson gave reporters an interesting reason for why its been a tough winter fighting the growing insurgency.

The violence “has risen somewhat largely I believe due to the really good weather,” according to Johnson. “Many of the passes that would normally be blocked, just were not.”

Whether the soaring violence can really be blamed on a simple lack of snow, as opposed to international forces increasingly losing control over the nation is ultimately beside the point. The reality is, with the Taliban planning yet another spring offensive, forces that are unable to cope with the somewhat more eventful than normal winter seem destined to lose yet more ground in the months to come.

THE UNITED STATES OF ISRAEL

THE UNITED STATES OF ISRAEL

Khaled Amayreh

March 5, 2009

It seems that one doesn’t have to wait four years to find out that Hillary Clinton is just a fraud, very much like her predecessor in the job, Condoleezza Rice.

The infamous Rice paid 24 visits to Occupied Ramallah and Occupied Jerusalem, babbling about the “peace process” and George Bush’s vision of two states living side by side in peace, Israel and Palestine.

Eventually, however, it was proven beyond any doubt that she was a lying emissary representing even a more lying boss.

So one may really wonder if Hillary Clinton will be re-enacting the same absurd show, same lies, and same deception.

In her recent visit to Occupied Palestine, the former NY senator, who had proven herself a submissive pawn in the service of Zionist circles, reiterated the same old platitudes about US commitment to the “two-state” solution.

How the world can stop Israeli crimes

Sun, 18 Jan 2009 08:31:05 GMT

by Roshan Muhammad Salih, Press TV, London

Tony Benn renounced his inherited title of 2nd Viscount Stansgate in 1963. He was the first peer to do so.

The following is an exclusive Press TV interview with Tony Benn — British socialist, former Labour MP and Cabinet Minister — on the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip:

Press TV: Tony Benn, you just gave a speech a few minute ago. Could you summarize what you said, and what your message is to Israel?

Benn: What is happening in Gaza is a crime against humanity. It is a moral issue and we are all morally responsible now, wherever we live, to help the people of Gaza.

I am suggesting that there is something that we could do, for example, there is a British naval base in Cyprus. We should use Royal Navy warships to escort the ship carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza.

We should use the Royal Air Force to fly into Gaza doctors, medical supplies, and also journalists, whom Israel keeps out.

We should tell the Israeli airlines EL Al that until they abide by the United Nations’ decisions, no Israeli aircraft would be allowed to fly into any British airport.

We should tell the British ambassador to withdraw from Israel, and the Israeli ambassador to withdraw from here. We should recognize that Palestine is a state.

We should also talk to Hamas ourselves, and we should get better, fairer coverage from media in Britain, that does not cover our demonstrations but at least through the help of Press TV what we are saying in Britain today can get around the world.

Suing for war crimes

Suing for war crimes

Azmi Bishara

Any recourse to international law in seeking to bring Israeli officials to book must be carefully considered, writes Azmi Bishara

March 5, 2009

It is not my intention to discuss the definitions of resistance, the legitimacy of resistance or the laws of war in general. Nor will I delve into the definition of war crimes, the relevant articles in international conventions, the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, the duties and obligations of its member states, the powers of its prosecutor and the difference between this court and those that were established for the prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity in specific countries, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia. All these subjects have been treated extensively in numerous other publications. My purpose here is to shed light on some possibly unfamiliar aspects of the notion of appealing to this form of international arbitration.

All such tribunals and conventions have derived their impetus from the will on the part of powerful nations to bring war criminals to account and from the ability of these powerful sovereign nations not only to draw up the law but to put it into effect when they want. Given this, it is fundamentally erroneous to liken international law to the rule of law in sovereign countries. International law does not prevail internationally, is not applied around the globe as though the world was a single sovereign country, and has no executive authority to put it into effect apart from powerful nations. It is thus subject to political aims and interests. Above all, the principle of equality before the law that applies in democratic countries does not exist in international law, either practically or theoretically.

Israel, apartheid, anti-Semites

summary:

Israel is now a state among nations and must be held to account, not absolved for fear of igniting a new Holocaust.

What is the sound of one side condemning? It’s the media rendering of Israel Apartheid Week, now under way. B’nai Brith ran full-page newspaper ads asking universities to “prevent” it and the attendant “anti-Semitism on campus.” There were no ads from organizers, so we didn’t hear them being anti-Semitic in their own words — or denying the charge.

Here’s the Toronto Star’s Rosie DiManno: “That detestable, despicable annual campus hate-fest … Jew-bashing cloaked in self-righteousness … students who don’t recognize racism when they’re spewing it.”

I don’t know if she meant to be ironic, spewing hate at the spewers. But I’ve talked with friends, Jewish and non, about these claims. They’re disturbed, they don’t want to witness the rise of a new horror. Here’s my take.

Jerusalem’s Silwan neighborhood
[Ma’anImages – Archive]

Jerusalem – Ma’an – Mousa Muhammad Ahmad Ouda’s new name is “Number 59.”

Ouda’s house is marked 59 of a total of 88 houses in one East Jerusalem neighborhood that are slated for demolition by the Israeli-controlled Municipality of Jerusalem. The Municipality says it plans to turn the area into a park.

The houses are marked in red on an official map drawn up by the Israeli authorities. On the satellite map the neighborhood, Bustan, is a sliver marked with a thick red boundary, an outline oddly similar to the outline of Mandate Palestine.

The Municipality says the houses were built without construction permits, but the residents say that the demolition orders are a calculated attempt to remove them from the land their families have inhabited for centuries.

“This house is more important to me than the Al-Aqsa Mosque. If I lose this house, I lose everything,” Ouda said during an interview in his one-story home, which lies a few hundred meters from the iconic mosque itself.
