GEORGE GALLOWAY: “I AM NOT A TERRORIST”

OTTAWA — Amid bravos he couldn’t actually hear, George Galloway, the British MP who was controversially barred from Canada for his ties to Hamas, told an Ottawa crowd Thursday he is no terrorist.

“I have instructed my lawyers in Canada to bring an action for defamation against Bernie Farber, the CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and CTV, for comments he made that they allowed him to make,” he said via an Internet connection. “I am not a terrorist. I am not a threat to Canada’s national security.”

The Galloway controversy began in mid-March, when he received a letter from a senior Canadian government official, informing him he wouldn’t be allowed in Canada for his speaking tour because of his “material support” of Hamas, which Canada considers a terrorist organization. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said the Conservative government didn’t make the decision, but indicated he would not overturn it. An action brought to the Federal Court by Galloway’s supporters failed Monday.

The outspoken Galloway is known for his support of the Palestinian movement. He was recently in Gaza Strip with a humanitarian convoy, donating money and supplies to the Hamas-led government.

“We gave it to the elected government of Palestine,” Galloway said. “Should we have driven around Gaza looking for opposition parties?”

He told the crowd that, after Israel’s recent 22-day offensive, Gaza looked as if an earthquake had hit. He said Israel had committed war crimes “with the full backing of the Canadian and U.S. governments.”

Before the speech began, Larry Rousseau from No-War-Paix said the Canadian government didn’t “think everything through” when it barred Galloway from entering the country.

“Since they made the decision, everything has been about freedom of speech,” he said.

“When (Galloway) talks, people really get upset about what he has to say. That usually happens when people tell the truth.”

But a group of men handing out sheets entitled “Galloway In his Own Words” said it wasn’t about free speech.

James Cohen said he wasn’t representing any organization, but wanted to provide some reading material in the “interest of fairness.”

He was getting a mostly negative reaction.

“They don’t seem that interested in fairness if it’s not a view they like,” he said.

Resisting American Zionism

Marcy Newman, Body on the line

April 3, 2009

there are so many fronts on which to fight american zionists even within american universities. for instance, angry arab reported some of the backlash american professors active in the academic boycott of israel have been targeted of late:

A colleague, Lara, sent me this (I cite with her permission): “A friend of mine who signed onto the U.S. call for an academic and cultural boycott of Israel is listed on that website received a package today from the Israeli consulate in Atlanta. It included a letter suggesting to her that her support of the boycott was misguided and could easily be corrected through proper information and that Israel is a democracy that celebrates its diversity in every possible way. It also included a number of glossy Israeli government propaganda brochures and pamphlets, and a book called “The Israelis” by Donna Rosenthal …that includes chapters with titles like “Dating and Mating Israeli Style” “Oy! Gay?” and “Hookers and Hash in the Holy Land,” alongside chapters like “The Bedouin: Tribes, Tents and Satellite Dishes” and “Out of Africa: Ethiopian Israelis in the Promised Land.” In all, the package seemed to be cast towards a stereotyped view of a “liberal academic” (as opposed to their propaganda for born-again Christians) who is assumed to know extremely little about the Middle East and who is assumed to be stupid enough to believe this shit.”

A fifth of Israeli exporters report drop in demand as footage of Gaza attacks changes behaviour of consumers and investors

Friday 3 April 2009

Israeli companies are feeling the impact of boycott moves in Europe, according to surveys, amid growing concern within the Israeli business sector over organised campaigns following the recent attack on Gaza.

Last week, the Israel Manufacturers Association reported that 21% of 90 local exporters who were questioned had felt a drop in demand due to boycotts, mostly from the UK and Scandinavian countries. Last month, a report from the Israel Export Institute reported that 10% of 400 polled exporters received order cancellation notices this year, because of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

NATO soldier, eight Afghans killed

By: AFP on: 04.04.2009 [05:47 ]

KABUL (AFP) – Gun battles and bomb strikes killed eight Afghan civilians and an international soldier in the NATO-led force trying to quell the extremist insurgency dogging Afghanistan, officials said Friday.

The fresh violence came as US President Barack Obama warned his NATO allies that they face a greater risk of terror attacks than America and he needs their help to defeat Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

In one incident, a bomb ripped through a vehicle carrying workers for a private road construction company in the central province of Ghazni and killed four men, Ab Band district chief Allah Dad Halimee told AFP.

US Dictatroship: No laws for drones

opinion: No laws for drones —Brian Cloughley

Obama’s policy is clear: drone-launched missile attacks will continue inside the territory of any nation because he considers that international custom and law do not apply to America. He is endorsing a dreadful precedent, and may well come to regret his decision to permit these illegal forays

During the Bush regime, we became accustomed to the United States dealing contemptuously with the world. Patronising insults and brutal military assaults were the norm, and no attention was paid to those who protested against destruction of people and property if these were in some manner deemed a threat in the absurd ‘war on terror’. Bush’s Washington thought it had a heaven-sent right to declare that countries were “with us or against us”, and Israel, which was especially “with us”, had total support for its vicious treatment of the Palestinian people.

When Barack Obama was elected president, it was expected that the era of the kill-crazy cowboys would end. The CIA would be reined in and illegal killings within the territory of foreign nations would cease. There would be an end to torture as state policy, and international law and custom would apply — and respect for America would at least be partially restored.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) – A pilotless U.S. drone aircraft fired a missile in northwest Pakistan on Saturday, killing 13 people including some foreign militants, security officials and residents said.
