Tragedi Keilmuan di UIN Jakarta

Monday, February 04, 2008

Saturday, 03 November 2007

::

Koppel: ‘Enhanced Interrogation Technique’ Like ‘Rape Is an Enhanced Seduction Technique’

Photo of Brent Baker.

Former ABC News anchor Ted Koppel took to BBC’s World News America newscast on Monday night to denounce former Vice President Dick Cheney as Koppel declared U.S. policy should be that “torture is always illegal, and those who use it will always be prosecuted.” Koppel shared how his “greatest disagreement” with Cheney is over describing water-boarding as an “enhanced interrogation technique,” which Koppel contended is a “euphemism” for torture that is “almost the moral equivalent of saying that rape is an enhanced seduction technique.” Furthermore, Koppel contended in mocking the carefully construed legal reasoning that allowed water-boarding, if you do that “you might as well go all the way to the red-hot pokers.”

In his first commentary for the hour-long, Washington, DC-based newscast run on the BBC America channel and the BBC World News channel, “contributing analyst” Koppel recalled how water-boarding “has a long and notorious history dating back to at least the Spanish Inquisition,” before proposing: “If we object to a technique being used on a captured American, we shouldn’t use it, either.” So, he declared: “Let those who violate our stated national principles on torture be put on notice, it is against American law no matter where or under what circumstances it’s employed, and violations of that law will lead to prison.”

Prisoner Who Tied Iraq to Al-Qaeda Found Dead in Libyan Jail

Brad Friedman

Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, whose false tortured confession was used as basis for Bush’s war, has reportedly committed suicide…

May 11, 2009

British journalist and historian Andy Worthington, an expert and author on Guantanamo, reports that the man who had supplied a key false tie between Iraq and al-Qaeda — after being tortured in Egypt, where he had been rendered by the U.S. — has died in a Libyan prison. “Dead of suicide in his cell,” according to a Libyan newspaper.

Worthington has excellent coverage of the story tonight, which, he says, is “ablaze” in the Arabic media, but so far unreported in all but one English language outlet.

“This news resolves, in the grimmest way possible,” Worthington writes, “questions that have long been asked about the whereabouts of Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, perhaps the most famous of ‘America’s Disappeared’ – prisoners seized in the ‘War on Terror,’ who were rendered not to Guantánamo but to secret prisons run by the CIA or to the custody of governments in third countries – often their own – where, it was presumed, they would never be seen or heard from again.”

Detainee Who Gave False Iraq Data Dies In Prison in Libya

Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 12, 2009

A former CIA high-value detainee, who provided bogus information that was cited by the Bush administration in the run-up to the Iraq war, has died in a Libyan prison, an apparent suicide, according to a Libyan newspaper.

A researcher for Human Rights Watch, who met Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi at the Abu Salim prison in Tripoli late last month, said a contact in Libya had confirmed the death.

Libi was captured fleeing Afghanistan in late 2001, and he vanished into the secret detention system run by the Bush administration. He became the unnamed source, according to Senate investigators, behind Bush administration claims in 2002 and 2003 that Iraq had provided training in chemical and biological weapons to al-Qaeda operatives. The claim was most famously delivered by then-Secretary of State Colin L. Powell in his address to the United Nations in February 2003.

The Death of Rendition Victim Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi

by Andy Worthington, <!– put date below, before tag –> May 11, 20009

From Libya comes news of the death of Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, a former “ghost prisoner” of the United States, whose false confession about a connection between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein — extracted under torture in Egypt — was used to justify the invasion of Iraq. The news will only add to the woes of the senior Bush administration officials who conceived the program of “extraordinary rendition” and torture within days of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and then, in a netherworld of secret memoranda, sought legal justification for their actions.

The fig leaf for the administration’s activities was the Authorization for Use of Military Force, the founding document of the “war on terror,” passed by Congress in that first hectic, horrible week after the attacks, which authorized the president “to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons.”
