‘Prosecuted or not Bush is criminal’

Interview with Mike Gravel, former US senator3

Former US President George W. Bush has said the 2003 Iraq invasion was not wrong and defended his decision in allowing the torture of 9/11 detainees.

The following is the transcript of Press TV’s interview with Mike Gravel, a former US senator, about the issue:

Press TV: George Bush has defended his war and torture decisions, what do you make of his statements?

Gravel: It is very clear he has just confessed to a crime and he has done that in his memoir.

The fact that our government will not prosecute that crime does not obviate the fact that he has confessed to a crime. We have not pursued the fact that he [must be] prosecuted for invasion of Iraq on phony fraudulent information.

So here again, we have a situation where George Bush exposes himself naked to world condemnation with his own memoir. The Guy is preposterous in this regard.

All I can say is that, maybe down the road, there will be an agency of government or we may have an American government that is interested in bringing about justice as these confessions, all by themselves, will be able to be used against George Bush and his administration.

It is a tragedy of American judicial system that [US President Barack] Obama made the decision and will not look back. When a country does not seek justice, it is not a country that will enjoy the full favor of democracy.

Press TV: Bush says torture of suspects helped prevent more attacks, is the world safer now after the US launched wars and practiced torture in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Gravel: Of course not. The whole terror issue is a criminal issue. You do not solve criminal problems by committing crimes. When you torture you are committing a crime and you are no different from the people that you are trying to catch.

Secondly by making it safer, he is assuming that this torture, the information that they pursue over a period of several months does bring about new information. It does not.

We have expert testimony from people in the intelligence and I have a background in this area that beyond the first 3 days you do not get any meaningful intelligence.

In several societies, we do not tolerate our police forces to use torture and yet in a civil society we are able to protect ourselves from crimes in a normal course of business.

Now when we change the standard for the crimes of terror, then we are allowed to act like beasts. That is what we are talking about. When one human being tortures another human being that is the animal instinct.

Now to have a national government policy to sustain this kind of immoral terrible acts is beyond the pale. So, when Bush and the American media can turn around and put this out really underscores the fact that right now in the American culture we have fallen into a very low ebb.
