Karl Rove : Grandson of Nazi Resigns From Serving Grandson of Nazi

Monday, August  12, 2007

So Karl Rove, the grandson of the man who helped build the Birkenau Death Camp and helped run the Nazi party, Karl Heinz Roverer, the Gauleiter of Oldenburg and Reich-Statthalter (Nazi State Party Chairman for his region), is to quit the White House after faithfully serving the grandson of the man who helped finance the Nazi Party and facilitated Hitler’s rise to power. About time too, I’d say.

It might seem a bit unfair to tar Rove and Bush with the same brush as that which depicted their grandparents (they haven’t managed to re-create the horrors of the Second World War on anything like the scale of the 1930s and 40s) but there are too many parallels to dismiss the issue completely; an obsession with world domination, detention camps in eastern Europe and elsewhere, torture, illegal invasions and occupations, war crimes…

If Rove was ‘Bush’s Brain’, he’s a brain the world could well do without. Not that his presence in the White House made Bush seem any less brainless. But just how gone is Karl Rove? As Agitprop points out:

The Boy King can just pick up the phone, and Karl will school him in the next episode of ratfucking.

With the Valerie Plame scandal it seemed just a matter of time before Rove departed and perhaps he jumped before he was pushed even though he seemed to have escaped further scrutiny. He can now join John Bolton, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz on the neocon scrapheap, hopefully to be joined soon by Alberto Gonzales and eventually by Dubya himself.

Dictatorship : US won’t tell Britons why they’re banned from travelling to America

airport chaos
Britons denied access to the US will no longer be informed why

British holidaymakers and businessmen banned from travelling to America under anti-terror laws will no longer have any right to know why they have been turned away.

The US Department of Homeland Security, set up following the September 11 attacks, last week applied for a blanket ban on disclosing the information it holds on Britons and other EU citizens.

Last month, Britain agreed to send the secretive US department all details of UK passengers before they fly to America.

The agency was given full access to huge amounts of information on individual passengers, including details of their credit cards, home addresses, e-mail addresses, frequent-flier records and even requests for special meals.

And, despite a huge privacy row in the European Parliament, it was also given permission to keep the airlines’ lists of passengers’ names for at least eight years.

The Department of Homeland Security last week said it intended to make this information available for ‘routine use’ by the intelligence community ‘to protect the United States from terrorist threats’ and to tackle cases of identity theft.

But it said it was also applying for a complete ban on disclosing the information it holds on individuals and then uses to turn passengers away.

Last week, it published a “notice of proposed rulemaking” for an exception from the US Privacy Act, which allows individuals to check records the American government holds on them.

The law is supposed to allow anyone to check files for mistakes but the new exception rule is being brought in on the grounds of national security and law enforcement.

Beer runners’ trail a recipe for trouble

Pair arrested after marking a powdery path through IKEA parking lot

The Associated Press

Updated: 6:56 p.m. MT Aug 25, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two people who sprinkled flour in a parking lot to mark a trail for their offbeat running club inadvertently caused a bioterrorism scare and now face a felony charge.

The sprinkled powder forced hundreds to evacuate an IKEA furniture store Thursday.

New Haven ophthalmologist Daniel Salchow, 36, and his sister, Dorothee, 31, who is visiting from Hamburg, Germany, were both charged with first-degree breach of peace, a felony.

The siblings set off the scare while organizing a run for a local chapter of the Hash House Harriers, a worldwide group that bills itself as a “drinking club with a running problem.”

“Hares” are given the task of marking a trail to direct runners, throwing in some dead ends and forks as challenges. On Thursday, the Salchows decided to route runners through the massive IKEA parking lot.

Police fielded a call just before 5 p.m. that someone was sprinkling powder on the ground. The store was evacuated and remained closed the rest of the night. The incident prompted a massive response from police in New Haven and surrounding towns.

Flouring the road from coast to coast

Daniel Salchow biked back to IKEA when he heard there was a problem and told officers the powder was just harmless flour, which he said he and his sister have sprinkled everywhere from New York to California without incident.

“Not in my wildest dreams did I ever anticipate anything like that,” he said.

Mayoral spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga said the city plans to seek restitution from the Salchows, who are due in court Sept. 14.

“You see powder connected by arrows and chalk, you never know,” she said. “It could be a terrorist, it could be something more serious. We’re thankful it wasn’t, but there were a lot of resources that went into figuring that out.”

Military cites risk of abuse by CIA : New Bush rules on detainees stir concern

Military cites risk of abuse by CIA

New Bush rules on detainees stir concern

By Charlie Savage, Globe Staff | August 25, 2007

WASHINGTON — Top military lawyers have told senators that President Bush’s new rules for CIA interrogations of suspected terrorists could allow abuses that violate the Geneva Conventions, according to Senate and military officials.

The Judge Advocates General of all branches of the military told the senators that a July 20 executive order establishing rules for the treatment of CIA prisoners appeared to be carefully worded to allow humiliating or degrading interrogation techniques when the interrogators’ objective is to protect national security rather than to satisfy sadistic impulses.

The JAGs expressed their concerns at a meeting late last month with Senators John Warner of Virginia, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and an aide representing John McCain of Arizona, who could not attend because he was campaigning for president. All three senators are Republicans who have been key proponents of laws banning the abuse of detainees, and have vowed to monitor the Bush administration’s treatment of prisoners.

The top JAG for the US Army, Major General Scott C. Black, followed up on the meeting this month by sending a memo to lower-ranking soldiers reminding them that Bush’s executive order applies only to the CIA, not to military interrogations. Black told soldiers they must follow Army regulations, which “make clear that [the Geneva Conventions are] the minimum humane treatment standard” for prisoners.

“This Executive Order does not change the standard for the Army. . . . I want to ensure that there is no confusion concerning the Executive Order’s lack of applicability to the Army,” Black wrote in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by the Globe. “As a Corps, we must be diligent to ensure that all interrogation and detention operations comply with the Army standard.”

In an e-mail yesterday, a Justice Department spokesman defended Bush’s order as “consistent” with the minimum standards of humane treatment required by the Geneva Conventions.

But the JAGs told the senators that a key part of the order opens the door to violations of the section of the Geneva Conventions that outlaws “cruel treatment and torture” and “outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment,” officials familiar with the discussion said.

The JAGs cited language in the executive order in which Bush said CIA interrogators may not use “willful and outrageous acts of personal abuse done for the purpose of humiliating or degrading the individual.” As an example, it lists “sexual or sexually indecent acts undertaken for the purpose of humiliation.”

Among lawyers, “for the purpose” language is often used to mean that a person must specifically intend to do something, such as causing humiliation, in order to violate a statute. The JAGs said Bush’s wording appears to make it legal for interrogators to undertake that same abusive action if they had some other motive, such as gaining information.

‘They (US Troops) fire first and think later,’ say British soldiers

‘They (US Troops) fire first and think later,’ say British soldiers

Tim Albone in Kabul

August 24, 2007

The friendly-fire deaths in Helmand have reopened a schism between American and British troops over how to fight the Taleban in Afghanistan.

Although publicly British commanders insist the Americans are still a vital ally in the fight against insurgents, privately British soldiers expressed concern and anger at their “gung-ho” approach.

Squadron Leader John Gunther, a British spokesman in Helmand, told The Times: “The Americans have helped us out on many occasions. The cause of the accident is under investigation, what I will say is that although tragic, friendly fire incidents are rare and are part of armed conflict.

“We have methods in place to stop this, but they are not fail-safe.”

However, news that an investigation was being launched did little to appease the British soldiers on the ground.

“I just can’t figure out how this has happened. How do you tell the families they were killed by supposed allies?” one British soldier asked.

“Whenever I hear we have American jets overhead I get f***ing worried,” another serviceman said. “They just don’t seem to know what they are doing a lot of the time.”

“They have a different approach to us, they fire first and think later,” said another.

“Here we are fighting the Taleban and they (US warplanes) are dropping bombs on us,” said a British soldier. “They are meant to have the best equipment, yet this still happens time and time again. You have to wonder what they are doing.”

Earlier this month an unnamed senior British officer told The New York Times that differences in tactics were such that he had asked American Special Forces teams to pull out of the town of Sangin, in Helmand, because they were causing so many casualties and undermining support for reconstruction projects.

The US forces also planned to build a patrol base near a religious shrine and a graveyard a proposal only abandoned after British troops intervened.

Des Browne, the Defence Secretary, was forced to issue a statement after the report, in which he said the views were those of a single officer. “It is not the view of the alliance. These things can be said in the heat of battle,” he said.

But when The Times visited Sangin last month, other soldiers were willing to describe the difficulties of working with their allies. “They just seem to have no idea how to fight a counterinsurgency, we have a history but they have no reference points” said one soldier.

“They have a different approach to us, if we get in an ambush we pull back and assess the situation,” said another. “They try and shoot their way through it and kill as many people as possible.”

War Criminal :18 Afghan civilians killed in NATO airstrike, locals say

Aug 26, 2007, 18:00 GMT

Kabul – Residents of a province in southern Afghanistan reported on Sunday that some 18 civilians were killed and over 22 wounded in a NATO airstrike.

Coalition forces however denied any aerial bombing or civilian casualties, but said that their forces along with Afghan soldiers killed some 12 Taliban rebels after their patrol was attacked by the insurgents on Saturday night.

NATO planes bombed a house in the Musa Qala district of southern Helmand province Saturday evening while residents were attending a wedding party, local resident Abdul Mannan Agha told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.

Agha, who brought eight wounded civilians to the provincial hospital in Lashkargah, said 18 civilians, including women and children, were killed and 22 wounded.

Khaliq Dad, another resident of Musa Qala, which is completely under the control of insurgents, also confirmed the number of civilian deaths and said that two hours later another house not far from the first site was hit by an airstrike, killing eight Taliban fighters and wounding ten.

Provincial Police Chief Mohammad Hussain Andewal could neither confirm nor deny the reports, and said a team had been assigned to go to the area to discover the facts.

A NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) spokesperson in Kabul said they were looking into the reports.

Denying civilian casualties, US forces said in a statement that their forces were ambushed by some 15 insurgents during a combat patrol to cross the Musa Qala Wadi on the western side of Helmand River.

The combined forces repelled the attack with small arms and machine gun fire but the insurgents reinforced their position with additional fighters, the statement said, adding that the Afghan forces called in aircraft but no bombs were dropped.

‘Twelve enemy fighters were killed in the engagement,’ it said, adding that no Afghan, coalition soldiers or civilians were injured during the firefight.

Southern Helmand province is one of the main Taliban hotbeds in southern region while according to US military, Musa Qalah, in particular, is widely recognized as the largest Taliban stronghold left in Afghanistan.

The remoteness and inaccessibility of the area makes it very difficult to verify the claims of civilian deaths independently.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai had expressed impatience over civilian casualties and recently lashed out at NATO forces, warning them of the risk of losing the war against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters if civilian deaths continue to mount.

Bush’s Killing Fields : Turning Iraq into Vietnam

Bush’s Killing Fields

Turning Iraq into Vietnam

By MARJORIE COHN

The following is a brilliant analysis of America’s two greatest blunders; the war in Vietnam and the war in Iraq. The comparisons are unbelievably frightening….

It is taken from the weekend edition of CounterPunch.

Desperate to shore up support for continuing his unpopular war on Iraq, George W. Bush drew an analogy with Vietnam when he addressed the Veterans of Foreign Wars. “The price of America’s withdrawal [from Vietnam] was paid by millions of innocent citizens,” Bush declared. But he overlooked the four million Indochinese and 58,000 American soldiers who paid the ultimate price for that imperial war. And the myriad Vietnamese and Americans who continue to suffer the devastating effects of the defoliant Agent Orange the U.S. forces dropped on Vietnam. The 10 years it took to end our war there claimed untold numbers of lives.

Bush cited the “killing fields,” referring to the more than one million Cambodians who died after we pulled out of Vietnam. He failed to mention that if Richard Nixon had ended the war by 1969, as the antiwar movement was demanding, the war wouldn’t have extended into Cambodia. Secret U.S. carpet bombing of Cambodia destroyed that country, enabling Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge to come to power. Nixon, too, had warned of a bloodbath in Vietnam to justify continuing his war.

Contrary to the picture Bush painted, Vietnam is a unified, stable country that doesn’t threaten the region; it has become a trading partner of the United States.

In his desperation to rationalize the death and destruction he is wreaking in Iraq, Bush credited the United States with the great progress South Korea and Japan have made. He didn’t say that the people of North and South Korea seek to reunify their country but the United States stands in the way. And Bush neglected to add that his government is pressuring Japan to repeal Article 9 of its Peace Constitution which now forbids the aggressive use of military force.

George Bush also reiterated that Iraq is “the central front” of the war on terror. But for his invasion, war and occupation of Iraq, however, al Qaeda wouldn’t be there.

Bush claimed “our troops are seeing this progress that is being made on the ground.” Perhaps the President didn’t read the elegant op-ed that seven infantrymen and noncommissioned officers penned in the New York Times last week. “The claim that we are increasingly in control of the battlefield in Iraq is an assessment arrived at through a flawed, American-centered framework,” they wrote. The soldiers noted the two million Iraqis in refugee camps and close to two million more who are internally displaced. “Four years into our occupation, we have failed on every promise, while we have substituted Baath Party tyranny with a tyranny of Islamist, militia and criminal violence.”

The only reason we stayed in Vietnam as long as we did was to avoid the U.S. superpower from being perceived as the “loser.” American involvement in Vietnam finally ended because our soldiers refused to fight, our people took to the streets in record numbers, Nixon was weakened by his impending impeachment, and the North Vietnamese–unlike the government in the South–won the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people.

Congress has no more will to end the Iraq War than it did the Vietnam War. It was one year after our troops came home that Congress finally cut the funding for all support of the South Vietnamese government; Nixon didn’t veto the bill because he needed insurance against impeachment. There is no substantial support in Congress or among the leading presidential candidates to bring all the troops home and disband the mega-bases Bush has built in Iraq.

Resistance to the Iraq War will continue to grow within the military. Like the Vietnamese, the Iraqis will be instrumental in ending Bush’s war. The soldiers pegged it in their op-ed: Iraqis “will soon realize that the best way to regain their dignity is to call us what we are–an army of occupation–and force our withdrawal.”

Marjorie Cohn is a professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and president of the National Lawyers Guild. She is the author of Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied the Law

Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jail was beaten to death, Asrana confirms

Ma’an News

August 26, 2007

Jerusalem – Ma’an – Asrana (our prisoners) media office in Jerusalem on Sunday blamed the Israeli authorities in Ramla prison for the death of Palestinian detainee ‘Umar Masalmah, aged 24.

Masalmah, from Hebron, was allegedly in good health just two days before he died, on Saturday.

Director of the Asrana media office, Munqith Abu Roumi, said the organisation can confirm that Masalmah died after being severely beaten by Israeli soldiers.

“We have established, through the other prisoners, that the man was attacked and beaten by the Israeli soldiers,” said Abu Roumi.

Masalmah was arrested by Israeli forces for entering Israel without a permit and was transported to Ramla prison.

“At Ramla jail he was attacked and severely beaten by the soldiers,” said Aby Roumi.

Abu Roumi appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other human rights organisations to prosecute those responsible for Masalmah’s death, close Ramla jail and offer treatment to Palestinian prisoners.

What is Faith?
What is Islam?
When will the Hour be established?

[Sahih Al-Bukhari : Volume 1, Book 2, Number 47]

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu): One day while the Prophet (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel came and asked:
“What is faith?” Allah’s Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) replied, ‘Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection.”
Then he further asked, “What is Islam?” Allah’s Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) replied, “To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan.”
Then he further asked, “What is Ihsan (perfection)?” Allah’s Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam)

replied, “To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you.”
Then he further asked, “When will the Hour be established?” Allah’s Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) replied, “The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its portents. When a slave (lady) gives birth to her master. When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of higher buildings. And the Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah. The Prophet then recited: “Verily, with Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour–.” (31. 34)
Then that man (Gabriel) left and the Prophet (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) asked his companions to call him back, but they could not see him. Then the Prophet (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said, “That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion.” Abu ‘Abdullah said: He (the Prophet) considered all that as a part of faith.

Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire.

Robert Fisk: Even I question the ‘truth’ about 9/11

Posted by musliminsuffer on August 26, 2007

Robert Fisk: Even I question the ‘truth’ about 9/11

Published: 25 August 2007

Each time I lecture abroad on the Middle East, there is always someone in the audience – just one – whom I call the “raver”. Apologies here to all the men and women who come to my talks with bright and pertinent questions – often quite humbling ones for me as a journalist – and which show that they understand the Middle East tragedy a lot better than the journalists who report it. But the “raver” is real. He has turned up in corporeal form in Stockholm and in Oxford, in Sao Paulo and in Yerevan, in Cairo, in Los Angeles and, in female form, in Barcelona. No matter the country, there will always be a “raver”.

His – or her – question goes like this. Why, if you believe you’re a free journalist, don’t you report what you really know about 9/11? Why don’t you tell the truth – that the Bush administration (or the CIA or Mossad, you name it) blew up the twin towers? Why don’t you reveal the secrets behind 9/11? The assumption in each case is that Fisk knows – that Fisk has an absolute concrete, copper-bottomed fact-filled desk containing final proof of what “all the world knows” (that usually is the phrase) – who destroyed the twin towers. Sometimes the “raver” is clearly distressed. One man in Cork screamed his question at me, and then – the moment I suggested that his version of the plot was a bit odd – left the hall, shouting abuse and kicking over chairs.

Usually, I have tried to tell the “truth”; that while there are unanswered questions about 9/11, I am the Middle East correspondent of The Independent, not the conspiracy correspondent; that I have quite enough real plots on my hands in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Iran, the Gulf, etc, to worry about imaginary ones in Manhattan. My final argument – a clincher, in my view – is that the Bush administration has screwed up everything – militarily, politically diplomatically – it has tried to do in the Middle East; so how on earth could it successfully bring off the international crimes against humanity in the United States on 11 September 2001?

Well, I still hold to that view. Any military which can claim – as the Americans did two days ago – that al-Qa’ida is on the run is not capable of carrying out anything on the scale of 9/11. “We disrupted al-Qa’ida, causing them to run,” Colonel David Sutherland said of the preposterously code-named “Operation Lightning Hammer” in Iraq’s Diyala province. “Their fear of facing our forces proves the terrorists know there is no safe haven for them.” And more of the same, all of it untrue.

Within hours, al-Qa’ida attacked Baquba in battalion strength and slaughtered all the local sheikhs who had thrown in their hand with the Americans. It reminds me of Vietnam, the war which George Bush watched from the skies over Texas – which may account for why he this week mixed up the end of the Vietnam war with the genocide in a different country called Cambodia, whose population was eventually rescued by the same Vietnamese whom Mr Bush’s more courageous colleagues had been fighting all along.

But – here we go. I am increasingly troubled at the inconsistencies in the official narrative of 9/11. It’s not just the obvious non sequiturs: where are the aircraft parts (engines, etc) from the attack on the Pentagon? Why have the officials involved in the United 93 flight (which crashed in Pennsylvania) been muzzled? Why did flight 93’s debris spread over miles when it was supposed to have crashed in one piece in a field? Again, I’m not talking about the crazed “research” of David Icke’s Alice in Wonderland and the World Trade Center Disaster – which should send any sane man back to reading the telephone directory.

I am talking about scientific issues. If it is true, for example, that kerosene burns at 820C under optimum conditions, how come the steel beams of the twin towers – whose melting point is supposed to be about 1,480C – would snap through at the same time? (They collapsed in 8.1 and 10 seconds.) What about the third tower – the so-called World Trade Centre Building 7 (or the Salmon Brothers Building) – which collapsed in 6.6 seconds in its own footprint at 5.20pm on 11 September? Why did it so neatly fall to the ground when no aircraft had hit it? The American National Institute of Standards and Technology was instructed to analyse the cause of the destruction of all three buildings. They have not yet reported on WTC 7. Two prominent American professors of mechanical engineering – very definitely not in the “raver” bracket – are now legally challenging the terms of reference of this final report on the grounds that it could be “fraudulent or deceptive”.

Journalistically, there were many odd things about 9/11. Initial reports of reporters that they heard “explosions” in the towers – which could well have been the beams cracking – are easy to dismiss. Less so the report that the body of a female air crew member was found in a Manhattan street with her hands bound. OK, so let’s claim that was just hearsay reporting at the time, just as the CIA’s list of Arab suicide-hijackers, which included three men who were – and still are – very much alive and living in the Middle East, was an initial intelligence error.

But what about the weird letter allegedly written by Mohamed Atta, the Egyptian hijacker-murderer with the spooky face, whose “Islamic” advice to his gruesome comrades – released by the CIA – mystified every Muslim friend I know in the Middle East? Atta mentioned his family – which no Muslim, however ill-taught, would be likely to include in such a prayer. He reminds his comrades-in-murder to say the first Muslim prayer of the day and then goes on to quote from it. But no Muslim would need such a reminder – let alone expect the text of the “Fajr” prayer to be included in Atta’s letter.

Let me repeat. I am not a conspiracy theorist. Spare me the ravers. Spare me the plots. But like everyone else, I would like to know the full story of 9/11, not least because it was the trigger for the whole lunatic, meretricious “war on terror” which has led us to disaster in Iraq and Afghanistan and in much of the Middle East. Bush’s happily departed adviser Karl Rove once said that “we’re an empire now – we create our own reality”. True? At least tell us. It would stop people kicking over chairs.

Original entry was:

Two American Airlines aircraft were hijacked and crashed during the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack: American Airlines Flight 77 (a Boeing 757) and American Airlines Flight 11 (a Boeing 767).

New entry is:

Two American Airlines aircraft were hijacked and crashed during the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack: Flight 77 (a Boeing 757) and Flight 11 (a Boeing 767). Although these flights were daily departures before and a month after September 11, 2001. Neither flight 11 nor 77 were scheduled on September 11, 2001. The records kept by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (www.bts.gov/gis/) do not list either flight that day.

A Google search of the IP address that made the change – 144.9.8.21 – is located at American Airlines.

Why the change American airlines? Did the flights actually operate or did we just imagine all of that?

I find this sort of sicken.

Deception, Lies and Manipulation of Palestinian Public Opinion

A Comment by Tony Sayegh, Palestinian Pundit

August 25, 2007

The current online poll by the Arabic Al-Jazeera is very interesting and illustrative of the attempts of the PA and those behind it (Israel, the U.S., the E.U. and the various puppet Arab regimes) to manipulate Arab public opinion in general and Palestinian public opinion in particular.

The poll was introduced on August 23 and it asks an important and timely question. The question is about who is responsible for the cutoff of electricity in Gaza: the Fayyad government, the Haniyya government or both. This is an important question especially since the quisling Fayyad “government” attempted to use the crisis and the resulting human suffering in Gaza, for which it was directly responsible, to turn the Palestinians in Gaza against Hamas. Fayyad’s henchmen openly asked the population in Gaza to rise up and demonstrate in the streets against Hamas and to blame their suffering on Hamas.

This is a step in a series of steps being taken by the PA to reintroduce chaos and turbulence in Gaza. Strikes and worker stoppages are being attempted again; one of these by medical professionals of all people. Fatah supporters are urged to demonstrate in the streets (Hamas rallies are prohibited in the West Bank), but then when they use violence and are dispersed by the police, they cry foul and Hamas is accused of curtailing the freedom of the press. It is a case of heads I win, tails you lose.

It is all indicative of intelligence and organization the PA does not possess. It is the handiwork of Elliott Abrams all over again and it is attempting the creative chaos, a la the Chilean model that toppled Allende, one more time.

Back to the poll; admittedly its results reflect the views of the larger Arab public, not just that of the Palestinians. However, those views should be similar if not identical. I followed the results from the beginning and initially they remained pretty much stable, as would be expected in a random poll. After 3,000 had taken part the results were: Fayyad responsible (77%), Haniyya responsible (9%) and both responsible (14%). Soon after that, the results began to shift consistently in a decidedly one direction: increased blame for Haniyya and reduced blame for Fayyad. As of this writing, with 17,000 responding, those blaming Fayyad are down to 71% and those blaming Haniyya are up to 16%. Still, it is not what Fayyad and those behind him had hoped for.

The important point is that there is a determined and organized effort to distort and shape Palestinian public opinion. Money being handed over to the PA as well as advice and training by the U.S. and various NGOs are being put to work. This is just a small part of a wider media campaign to sell the PA and the American line to the Palestinian and Arab public. Most of the Palestinian media, including radio and television, is controlled by the PA and its hacks. Similarly, most of the Arab media has been bought and is controlled by Saudi money and is peddling the American line, after all of the disasters that the U.S. has brought to Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Somalia, etc.

It was interesting that on the same day that this Al-Jazeera poll was introduced, the PA surrogate Ghassan Khatib, masquerading as a pollster, published the results of a “poll” showing increased support for the Fayyad “government” and declining support for Hamas. I commented on those results and on who Khatib is in an earlier comment. The contrast between the results of these two polls is dramatic which should totally discredit Khatib and his “polls.”

Iraqirabita published these images and many more, which shows the “successful” US military campaign in Diyala province.

U.S. and Iraqi soldiers started the operation with a late-night air assault, they said. The operation’s focus is to target militants who fled an earlier crackdown in the provincial capital Baquba into the river valley north of the city.

This is the result of late-night air assault:

DR. MUTHANNA AL-DHARI :

THE armed RESISTANCE is the Iraqis honor and Association has supported it from the beginning

Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI)

Sunday, 26 August 2007

DR. MUTHANNA AL-DHARI : THE armed RESISTANCE is the Iraqis honor and Association has supported it from the beginning

– The AMSI has became the voice of all Iraqis

– Plenty of Sheikh’s of southern tribes wish to come to the headquarters of AMSI to show their support for our attitudes ..

– What is happening on the Iraqi territory is only the religion tax and the obligations of our holy religious legislation.

Dr. Muthanna Harith al-Dhari responsible for AMSI Media and Information Department has underlined that Association is trying hard to expel the occupation by heart, speech and even by hands that rubs the heads of the orphans and grown-up on the shoulders of (Shaheed – a person who dies for the sake of Islam) family .. we are the hands for them to present any aid, we are the hands to publicize their knowledge to the world, and we are the hands which catches their hands to introduce their matters and all aspects to the world, further more, we are the voice of the resistance and all national powers whom are against the occupation, in past they were hesitant to say such words, but we say that the armed resistance is the honor of all Iraqis and it was honorable to the Association to support the resistance from the beginning.

Dr. Muthanna Al-Dhari has emphasized that the pressure on the Association and perform attacks will result in the increase of rejection and complains for the occupation, because the Association has became the voice of all Iraqis. It is not the voice of one or any certain sect, that is the main aim in the internal regulations of AMSI since the foundation.

He added that the sectarian government after it controlling the country is trying to silence the rejection voice to the occupation, and to the sectarian plans that wants to cut the largest group of the Iraqi in order to cover the scandals plans of the evil occupation and its tails.

The AMSI has a great activities in either inside or outside, the General Secretary, official spokesman and the members of AMSI together with its branches abroad and also the Associations media means have declared the plans of the government that aims to cut the voices of the others either to remove those whom are in the political operation or to make the legal and political powers that rejects the current politics to disappear, which result to take more precautions for these plans.

In regard the national reconciliation, Dr. Al-Dhari has expressed that the national reconciliation has became nonsense and was thrown backwards, and the national reconciliation demand that had submitted by all powers to the government was the first demand, it was the main subject that was knocked by consisting the quartet treaty.

In the first agreement conference which was held in Cairo, a committee was formed containing all sects and directions including the Association, after long discussions, the AMSI delegates could gain from the participants a decision that gives the necessity of revising the whole constitution, that means the political operation must be studied and re-examined and to confess and accept the resistance, and these bases are the fundamental of the national reconciliation.

However, all these was concealed and we expected so, but our participation in the conference was just our evidence and the documents of Arab League proves our agreement and we had published that in AMSI official site, so the reconciliation is a special political governmental non-national agreement, the evidence for that is when the difference has occurred among the political operation participants for several articles, a principal participant in this political operation was abandoned in spite of the effort of this participant along the past period, they kept the discussion on national unity government, nowadays the speech is about a Deserving Selective Government, so the subject about The National Reconciliation has failed.

Regarding the AMSI efforts concerning the Iraqi resistance to be recognized and should have their opinion about the Iraq’s situation be considered, which these efforts cost the AMSI too expensive such as increasing raides, arrests and so on, Dr. Muthanna has answered as: Yes, it costs us too much but with our full consent, complete peace and conviction, because our efforts is our duty from the stand point of our religious belief and also a national duty.

The resistance issue has became a real aspect from the view of principle, therefore the resistance is legal according to texts available in the Islamic laws, we don’t have to discuss about the laws, also according to the UN resolution, so the resistance is legal by law but it is different from the point of legitimating, to gain this condition all political powers should recognize availability of this resistance, within the past four years we could manage to convince several political powers and some other groups to recognize the availability of the resistance but they denied after the political conditions has changed.

So it is clearly proven that the Iraqi resistance is lawful and legitimate according to the resolutions of the UN and the first and second national agreement confernces held in Cairo which they had held under the supervision of Arab league, the United Nations and the European Community, we think now we are paying too many costs,, such as cost of protection of the Iraqi unity, cost of attitudes to free the country from the occupation, cost of disseminate the legal wise of the resistance and support it to gain legitimation, these are the costs we paying, but we are really paying these cost with utmost spaciousness because it is a duty.

Dr. Muthanna has added that the AMSI is the only post paying the costs, there are several posts paying such costs as well, but the Association is well known, because it is doing its job as clearly as it can be and has a lot of branches inside Iraq, also it has mediatic, informative and aid activities, that it why the Association is always seen in front. There are many others in the south, whom are rejecting the current situation in the country, are getting the similar treatment and suffering from arrests and assassinations, whereas, such treatments can not be observed and the lights can not be focused on to pretend that the resistance is a foreign or terrorism actions, and to show that the resistance is sectarian and activates in a certain places. It is honorable to us although the emplacement of the resistance is known, however, there is a patience and rejection resistance in the south. Before a couple of days there was delegates from southern tribes, they informed us that there are too many sheikhs of the tribes wishing to come to our headquarters in order to express their support to our attitudes, whereas the travel difficulties banned to be realized, and some of them has gone to Syria and Jordan to express their confirmations to our attitudes before the AMSI General Secretary. There was before only four days ago in Amman one of well known personalities of Kerbala in case to perform a surgical operation and the AMSI General Secretary has visited him in hospital and had under taken his treatment there, and he is in a continuous contact with us, and also there are many sheikhs whom are in contact and complaining from the terrible situation in the south such as murdering, arresting and assassinating.

Dr. Muthanna Al-Dhari has emphasized that the headquarters of the AMSI located in a hot zone in Baghdad, and the said headquarters is under siege since a period of time, and suffering from passing in and out, and most of the people think that a raid were conducted and was ended, I announce to all Iraqis that the AMSI is under siege from along time and there is no other way to get in unless using one way which protection forces and so-called internal commando forces, the forces are pressurizing on the Association as it considered the arrow for the rejecting powers for the occupation and has subjected to and been under great pressure.

About the occupation and its period of stay Dr. Muthanna has declared that the age of the occupation is just about to be finished, and the remainder of occupation age is too less than the past, the occupation trying to depart and trying to edit a precise scenarios of the departure as it has been in Vietnam.

The occupation trying to sow the strife and separation seeds among the Iraqi society, the British occupation doing that in Basrah and the Americans in the rest of Iraq, the occupation will leave Iraq in a near short time, and all efforts of the occupation and the following sectarian governments will have no benefits, therefore the withdrawal has became clear, and regional interferences are known to everybody from the stand point of documentations and incidents, our families in the south have got the realities for the said interferences which was facilitated by the occupation.

Dr. Al-Dhari has stated that the AMSI is doing its best by heart by tongue by hands to effect the occupation to leave the country, the Association is the hands that wipes the heads of the orphans and wipes the heads of the families of those who had died for Islam, so we are their hands that presents the assistances, we are their hands that makes their information’s to reach all the world, and we are their hands that defines their matters to the world,, Before a couple of days a delegate from the Association has visited Turkey together with a number of citizens were arrested to explain their sufferings of the occupation forces and the invaders governments in case to be submitted to the International Courts. Over all these events we are the voice of the resistance and all national powers who is against the occupation, in the past the people were difficulty can express these words but now we could say that the armed resistance is the honor of all Iraqis, the AMSI has supported the resistance since the beginning.

With help of Allah we were the loudest voice of the current stage when a varity of voice were silenced as some conditions have banned them, we say our sorry to all whom either talked and been silenced or never talked, and say the duty that we are performing is the aid given in kind by the AMSI, we, by the willing of Allah, will execute these aids instead of those who can not do it in any way, the most important thing is that we are the voice of all Iraqi’s from the north until the south and from west to east, and we will carry on in the same manner.

The concoction of the occupation forces when conducted the Association about finding out various bottles inside the main center of AMSI, Dr. Muthanna has emphasized that AMSI is consisted of three sections which takes care to follow the Iraqi’s conditions, the sections are health section and aid section with main duty of providing and supplying with our limited possibilities the drugs and medical equipments to the hospitals and health centers and perform assistance campaign to places of disaster, the third section is the social section and the duty of this section is to take care for the orphans and some families with poverty as preparing some facilities of aids, and we have a section special for human rights which undertakes to hear the complains and submit the cases to the legal offices inside and outside the country.

The health and aid sections are receiving assistances from charitable foundations inside and outside of Iraq, the utmost one among these foundations is The Iraqi Red Crescent, and the aid is included to receive shares of aids from some Arabian Foundations for Charity as so-called “Foods Basket” and “Assistance Basket”, the food basket is consisted of foods and nourishing and the assistance basket consisted of tent, a heater to be used in winter and a small gas tube for fast cooking or lighting including some health facilities, all these stuffs are collected in these sections and then distributed to the places, it seems the forces have found these gas tubes that did not reached to the certain places, and they have collected to assure as they are safe, I belief that they thought that these tubes are used for other purposes in case to claim that the Association is assisting the terrorists, as they claimed in the first raid that they have found terrorists inside the Association, which the Association is innocent of such claims.

About the incidents happening on the Iraqi territory Dr. Al-Dhari said, the human wisdom logically says that what is happening in Iraq is a tax, it is the religion tax and wrapping into regulations of the Islamic religion, so I could say that the present of Iraq is negative and bad in view of observing the partial matters but the whole observation looks opposite and says that the present time will drive us to a preferred future.

As the whole observation say that the matters passing so far is in our favor and the occupation forces together with their assistants are passing through its worsest days, further more the American project is almost to be completely collapsed, the matter needs for more patients and time, and it will be in favor of whom has stand. I say the Iraq’s future will be better than the present time, the recent days are much better than the days passed in spite of the biggest self-denial and bloodshed, we look to the subject through these questions: is the condition of the occupation better or worse? is the condition of the government better or worse? is the condition of the resistance better or worse?

The whole observation assures that the matters are in its right course, however, there are self-denial and it should be but a small amount is lift after a four years of patience, and this year will be last year of the occupation in Iraq Inshaallah.

Raiding The AMSI was expected In order to Apply More Pressure to it Through its heartbeating in Ummul Qura Mosque

Dr. Muthanna Harith al-Dhari responsible for AMSI Media and Information Department has said upon the raid and the continuous arrests in Association headquarters and also anti-propaganda against it is not an unexpectable actions. We are used to such raids and we expect more important and bigger than this.

Dr.Muthanna Al-Dhari added in speech to radio Ummul Qura, by this attack the number of the raids to the Association Headquarters has arisen to fourth raid, as it is the second within one month, a real politician observes clearly that, the political is just about to be collapsed, and both the American and the British Administrations are in great difficulties regarding the withdrawal of their troops from Iraq, the President Bush is forced to a partition withdrawal of the troops without considering the number of the American forces, this mean’s it is the start of a clear defeat announcement of the American project in Iraq, additionally, the British military commanding officers stared to pressure on their government, upon the background speech circulation in the British mediatic corporations, in order to withdraw their forces from Iraq, which, with assistance of Allah, will be followed by the withdrawal of the disgraced American forces, now these facts throw all astrays on the lurched political operation, even its makers can not guess what to do, they say that this government is a unitized national government, whereas, the government became a sectarian and ethnical government without considering all promises which they had.

After all these events occurred, the AMSI has clarified from the beginning that these matters will be reached to today’s situation after so and so years, and has warned the necessity of occupation disappearance, and the political method is failed which was built on wrong fundamentals, as it can be seen the sectarian and ethnical resultant, further more, we said that inconsideration for an Iraq citizen’s opinion will cause the same, and also we explained that the most effective aspect in political field those who reject the occupation .. we have repeated these in various press release and in the conferences that we have participated in and we emphasized upon, however, nobody has listen.

Dr. Muthanna Al-Dhari has added, after all these incidences and the passed period, the Association’s opinion together with all rejection powers to occupation was proved, and the politicians were returned to the first square which they started from, when we were reminding them with dangerousness of the occupation, they were saying that these words are typical and slogan words, now they are calling for the same thing without feeling that these are our words, we don’t want any proud or honor, but only we say that four years has been passed with bloodshed and damages, all for nothing only for an unsuccessful political operation, aren’t the Iraqis have the right to ask why all this insistence to forbid the others opinions.

Since 2004 we had submitted a project to the UN via Al-Akhadhar Al-Ibrahimi stating what is happening and we especially pointed out the schedule program of withdrawal to bestow the UN more role, the Association was the first establishment which has announced that the UN must be given more extended role, the concerned now feel the absolute necessity to return to the UN, today is the annual remembrance of Dimillo (The UN Representative in Iraq) who was killed in Baghdad and the only responsible for bombing the UN building was the occupation forces in order to leave the Iraqi territory to keep the field opened for it only, now they want and are in need the UN to be returned back to Iraq i.e to the zero point.

Dr. Muthanna Al-Dhari has also announced in his speech to Ummul Qura Radio that, AMSI General Secretary Dr. Harith Al-Dhari is accept’s within thses day in Amman some several known political and non political personalities, whom were inside the political operations and those whom were expelled from it, some are former conservatives and some are governmental representatives and M.P’s, all are visiting the AMSI General Secretary’s resident center to discuss and submit their complaints about the bad conditions… all those people know and expect that the rejecting powers for the occupation is the key to resolve these matters in Iraq, so some are truthfully doing their willing and some others for gaining (as they think) a good rank in the next political organization whom were expelled or disappeared or were removed from the current political operation.

Dr. Al-Dahri has emphasized that this declarations and expressions must be listened by all Iraqis, and should know that there are too many efforts by several political powers to jump from the vessel.

When the occupation and governmental forces seen the effectiveness reality, so started to increase repeatedly its pressures on the Association Headquarters and on the beating heart of the Associatiopn in Ummul Qura Mosque, in case to weaken the efforts of all members, because they knew well the positive effects of either Ummul Qura Radio nor through Al-Basair newspaper or even the internet site of the Association the first site of Iraq and the increased visitors to it everyday, these mediatic means has involved to change the public temperament and involved to return the national unity soul back in the streets, for these reasons they are pressing on us to give up in order to protect our headquarters.

I call and say for all that these headquarters are only means, however, the targets are much greater, if it happened and we obliged to stop working and have to close up these centers, there are many many places inside Iraq that we can work through, The AMSI’s will never be stopped, they think we will give up working and can not resist to their materialistic and psychological pressure, they should know that if we wanted to be as similar as others we could from the beginning with framework of the political operation, we wouldn’t let to cost us with all these bloodshed of the innocents and these inconvenience and terrible situation be occurred, but I say that the case is not a sudden beneficial case but it is principles case.

He added that, the more attack and raid to the Association the more increasing in rejecting the occupation, and everybody should know that the Association has became the voice of every Iraqi not for only a certain sect or an ethical group.

The security forces has performed a campaign to eliminate the rejecting powers of occupation.

Al-Anbar Province.
Al-Baghdadi.

Zionist Mossad increasing presence in western Iraq, tribal leader reports.

In a dispatch posted on its website Saturday, Quds Press reported that the head of the Union of Tribes of Western Iraq in the area of the Upper Euphrates near the Syrian border had disclosed that the “Israeli” Mossad had increased its presence in those areas, beginning two months ago. He said that US forces are extending protection to the Mossad’s cars and headquarters in the area.

Shaykh Ahmad al-Khanjar, the Chairman of the Union of Tribes of Western Iraq, an organization of 13 Iraqi tribes, told Quds Press that four-wheel-drive GMC cars belonging to the Mossad are present in the areas of al-Hadithah and nearby al-Haqlaniyah, ‘Anah, al-Qa’im, Jubbah, and other villages. He said that the “Israelis” have been there for several months under American protection.

The Mossad men, al-Khanjar said, wear civilian clothing (some of them including yarmulkes) and travel around western Iraq under American guard. He said that the Mossad operatives stay in the headquarters that the Americans have set up in the old Customs Building near the Syrian border, in the former Iraqi Army Camp in the area of al-Baghdadi, about 200km northwest of Baghdad, and at the phosphate mining complex.

Shaykh al-Khanjar said that they have also established their own headquarters similar to the facilities used by the American occupation forces. The Mossad set up one of its headquarters in the former Hafsah Primary School in al-Qa’im on the Syrian border, and in the large building that formerly housed the headquarters of the “Projects for Roads, Bridges, and Travelers’ Rest Stops.” The Zionists have surrounded their facilities with large security fortifications and barbed wire, making it virtually impossible to break in. They have also set up communication towers atop those headquarters. In addition, the Shaykh said, they have recruited Iraqis willing to work for them inside the city.

Shaykh al-Khanjar said that the Mossad operatives come out of their headquarters every day, making three rounds outside the city accompanied by US escort vehicles. He said that local people were certain that the Mossad agents’ mission was of a non-combat character, consisting of espionage and gathering information. Shaykh al-Khanjar said that the Iraqi Resistance attacked them on 17 July, destroying one of their vehicles and killing four of the people inside. After the attack it became clear from the papers and documents on the men that they were members of the “Israeli” Mossad.

Baghdad.

Sectarian murder spree continues: 10 more bodies found dumped around Baghdad Saturday.

In a dispatch posted at 10:15pm Baghdad time Saturday night, the Aswat al-‘Iraq news agency, which was set up by Reuters and the U.N. Development Agency, reported that the Iraqi puppet police had recovered the bodies of 10 more victims of sectarian murder that had been dumped in various parts of Baghdad during the previous 24 hours.

Aswat al-‘Iraq reported a source in the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry” who asked to remain anonymous, as sayig that most of the bodies were found in the central Baghdad district of al-Karakh. All had been shot to death.

Ban imposed on motor traffic in Baghdad starting Saturday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 6:35pm Makkah time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Iraqi puppet regime imposed a ban on motor traffic until further notice in Baghdad and the suburbs.

Mafkarat al-Islam reported that official television announced the decree banning cars and trailers used by local people for selling goods and all sorts of transport. Motorcycles are also covered by the ban, which took effect at 6pm local time Saturday afternoon and was to remain in force until further notice.

Regime spokesman Brigadier General Qasim al-Musawi announced the ban, which he explained as being intended to “protect the citizens” during the season in which the Shi‘ah make pilgrimage visits to the tombs of their Imams. The Shi‘i festival of “Visitations in the Month of Sha‘ban” occurs on Wednesday, 29 August this year. On that day, thousands of Shi‘ah travel to Karbala’ to pay their respects to the tombs in that city.

Special flight of clergymen arrives in Iraq to raise US troops’ sagging morale.

In a dispatch posted on its website Saturday, Quds Press reported that in an effort to raise the sagging morale of US troops in Iraq, the US had sent a delegation of five leading Christian clergymen to Iraq.

Quds Press reported that the five clergymen are to travel around Iraq for several days, meeting the troops and trying to improve their spirits. ‘Ali Sa‘dun, an official who works in the arrival section of Saddam International Airport, told Quds Press that the religious leaders’ tour, which began with their arrival on Thursday, was ordered by US President George Bush with the aim of raising morale and encourage them to continue fighting.

Sa ‘dun said that a special airplane landed at the airport and they were then transported to the US embassy in the top-security area around the Republican Palace in Baghdad – the walled district that the Americans have dubbed the “Green Zone.” The move comes following news reports that the suicide rate for US troops in Iraq had risen 15 percent over last year.

Car bomb explodes in al-Kazimiyah area of Baghdad midday Saturday.

In a dispatch posted at 1:55pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that a short while earlier a car bomb had exploded near al-‘Urubah Square in al-Kazimiyah. Eyewitnesses said that the area was crowded with stores and shoppers and that the casualty toll was likely to be high.

In a report posted at 4:47pm Makkah Time Saturday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that at least seven people were killed and 30 more wounded when a car bomb that had been parked in the predominantly Shi‘i district.

US admits death of prisoner in prison camp near Baghdad Friday.

In a dispatch posted at 1:40pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that an Iraqi being held prisoner had died “of disease” at the US prison Camp Cropper near Saddam International Airport just outside of Baghdad.

The AMSI reported a US statement as saying that one of the prisoners there died after noon on Friday. A preliminary medical examination, the report said, determined the cause of death to be severe kidney failure.

The US occupation forces have about 19,000 people locked up in three prison camps. Many of those held in Camp Cropper are officials of the Iraqi government overthrown by the American invasion in spring 2003. The other two major American prison camps are Camp Bucca located in the Umm Qasr area south of al-Basrah near the border with Kuwait, and Camp Susah located in as-Sulaymaniyah Province in northeastern Iraq.

Wasit Province.
Al-Kut.

Bomb explodes by US patrol southeast of al-Kut Saturday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 6:06pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Aswat al-‘Iraq news agency, which was set up by Reuters and the U.N. Development Agency, reported that a bomb exploded by a US patrol as it drove along the main road southeast of al-Kut, about 180km south of Baghdad before noon Saturday.

Aswat al-‘Iraq reported residents of the al-Fallahin neighborhood where the attack took place as saying that the explosion of the bomb, which had been planted at the edge of the main road to al-Kut, inflicted no damage or casualties.

The witness said that the American troops responded to the blast by shooting indiscriminately around the area but no one was wounded by the US gunfire either.

US helicopter kills two civilians in al-Kut.

In a dispatch posted at 2:36pm Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Aswat al-‘Iraq news agency, which was set up by Reuters and the U.N. Development Agency, reported that US forces killed two local civilians after a group of pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen opened fire on US troops carrying out an airborne landing to the west of al-Kut, 180km south of Baghdad.

Aswat al-‘Iraq reported residents of the al-Jihad neighborhood to the southwest of al-Kut as saying that “gunmen belonging to the Jaysh al-Mahdi frustrated an airborne landing of US forces in the at-Ta’mim area late Friday night.” One witness said that a US helicopter landed four troops in the al-Jihad neighborhood but quickly had to withdraw them after they came under heavy gunfire from the Jaysh al-Mahdi sectarian militia.

The witness said that the US helicopter returned fire in the direction of the Jaysh al-Mahdi, but killed two civilians.

Aswat al-‘Iraq reported that the al-Jihad neighborhood is densely populated and is separated from the US Camp Delta by the al-Gharraf River and the main road that runs from al-Kut to the al-Ahrar area. The neighborhood is frequently the scene of clashes between US troops and the Jaysh al-Mahdi Shi‘i sectarian militia, which is attempting to step into the shoes of the American occupation forces when they leave Iraq.
