When it was widely assumed, based on basically nothing, that Muslims had been responsible for this attack and that a radical Muslim group likely perpetrated it, it was widely declared to be a “terrorist” attack. That was the word that was continuously used. And yet, when it became apparent that Muslims were not involved and that, in reality, it was a right-wing nationalist with extremely anti-Muslim, strident anti-Muslim bigotry as part of his worldview, the word “terrorism” almost completely disappeared from establishment media discourse. Instead, he began to be referred to as a “madman” or an “extremist.” And it really underscores, for me, the fact that this word “terrorism,” that plays such a central role in our political discourse and our law, really has no objective meaning. It’s come to mean nothing more than Muslims who engage in violence, especially when they’re Muslims whom the West dislikes.

On Friday, July 22, 2011 an explosive device detonated near a government building in the quiet city of Oslo, Norway. A few hours later, on the island of Utoya at a youth summer camp, a lone gunman began a shooting rampage that left at least 84 people dead. As soon as American television news agencies picked up on the story, they began parading their officious sounding “expert commentators” before the camera to let the world know who was to blame for these heinous acts.

Before there were any facts released or investigation by the Norwegian authorities, the collective American media had the culprits pegged. Of course, it had to be some sleeper cell of al Qaeda or another Muslim terrorist group bent on the destruction of our wonderful happy little white Christian world.

But wait a moment! The Norwegian police have a man in custody and have released a photo of suspect Anders Behring Breivik, and something is really wrong with this picture.

STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

Jakarta, July, 27, 2011

We, Muhammadiyah Youth, would like to convey our deepest and most sincere condolences to the people of Norway, especially friends, families, and relatives of the victims, following the Utoya Island shooting and Oslo bombing. In our view, it was one of the worst humanitarian tragedies in the history of mankind.

These deadly attacks are the wake-up calls and living proof that terrorism and barbarism may come in many faces. Those can be committed by anyone, regardless of his/her national, cultural, social backgrounds, or religious affiliation. Therefore, we condemned these acts of violence, as we firmly believe that there is no argument whatsoever which can be used to justify and rationalize these acts that took so many lives of innocent people.

Besides known as the country where the Nobel Prize is awarded, Norway is a country with international reputation and significant contribution for the world peace and in bringing people together. Therefore, in these difficult days, we would like to assure the people of Norway that you are not alone. We are in a full solidarity, support, and great sympathy with all of you. We share your profound sorrows. Our thoughts and prays are with all the families, friends, and relatives.

Reflecting on this tragedy, we and also our colleagues from the Moslem Brotherhood of Workers and Sabang Merauke Circle affirm the following principles with regard to peace building of the world:

1. On behalf of humanity, what was done by Anders Breivik Behring is an act that can not be tolerated by anyone. Hatred and hostility are the main enemy of humanity.
2. Accordingly, we would like to remind the global community that terrorism is not merely the enemy of particular religion, but also the enemy of all nations in the world.
3. We stand in the front line with all the citizens of the world to fight terrorism. We also urge the world community that it is extremely important for us all to walk hand in hand to fight those who want to destroy our harmonious, multicultural, and democratic society.
4. We urge world leaders to open up new perspectives in seeing clearly and objectively about the issue of global terrorism without barriers between East and West.
5. We invite all the components of the Indonesian people to give support to the people of Norway, particularly to the families of victims of this tragedy.

July 25, 2011 “Salon” — July 23, 2011 —  For much of the day yesterday, the featured headline on The New York Times online front page strongly suggested that Muslims were responsible for the attacks on Oslo; that led to definitive statements on the BBC and elsewhere that Muslims were the culprits.  The Washington Post‘s Jennifer Rubin wrote a whole column based on the assertion that Muslims were responsible, one that, as James Fallows notes, remains at the Post with no corrections or updates.  The morning statement issued by President Obama — “It’s a reminder that the entire international community holds a stake in preventing this kind of terror from occurring” and “we have to work cooperatively together both on intelligence and in terms of prevention of these kinds of horrible attacks” — appeared to assume, though (to its credit) did not overtly state, that the perpetrator was an international terrorist group. 

But now it turns out that the alleged perpetrator wasn’t from an international Muslim extremist group at all, but was rather a right-wing Norwegian nationalist with a history of anti-Muslim commentary and an affection for Muslim-hating blogs such as Pam Geller’s Atlas Shrugged, Daniel Pipes, and Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch.  Despite that, The New York Times is still working hard to pin some form of blame, even ultimate blame, on Muslim radicals (h/t sysprog):

Terrorism specialists said that even if the authorities ultimately ruled out Islamic terrorism as the cause of Friday’s assaults, other kinds of groups or individuals were mimicking Al Qaeda’s brutality and multiple attacks.

“If it does turn out to be someone with more political motivations, it shows these groups are learning from what they see from Al Qaeda,” said Brian Fishman, a counterterrorism researcher at the New America Foundation in Washington.

The undercover agents had been sent by Israel as part of Operation Wrath of God to assassinate Ali Hassan Salameh, the leader of the Black September Organization, a Palestinian militant group that carried out the 1972 Munich Massacre. They mistook Bouchiki for their target and shot him repeatedly as he walked back from a cinema to his apartment with his pregnant wife.

Norway’s Ministry of Finance announced that the Norway Oil Fund divested from Africa-Israel Investments and Danya Cebus Ltd. on Monday.

The reason given is the companies’ construction in the West Bank.

Motive for a false-flag terror attack in Norway.

1. Israel decides the best way to halt Norway’s leading of Europe away from Zionist domination is to stage a terror attack to be blamed on Muslims, in order to put public pressure on the government of Norway to abandon BDS and support for Palestine. As the world received the first images and commentator responses yesterday, it became evident early on that the mainstream networks, in the U.S. at least, were content with projecting an initial suspicion, if not declaration, that the attacks were more than likely the result of Muslim extremists, or “terror cells” established in Scandinavia.

There is plenty of evidence of the initial hysteria toward Muslim Extremists, but this, in particular, is notable:

A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism.

In later editions, the story was revised to read:

Initial reports focused on the possibility of Islamic militants, in particular Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or Helpers of the Global Jihad, cited by some analysts as claiming responsibility for the attacks. American officials said the group was previously unknown and might not even exist.

A gunman allegedly dressed as a policeman opened fire on a crowd of young Labour supporters at a summer camp on the island of Utoya in Norway yesterday. The death toll from both attacks stands at 92 and counting.

Authorities has conveniently unearthed a typically mad 1,500 page manifesto (here is link to the whole thing) credited to the alleged gunman accused of this killing spree, written under the name of Andrew Berwick (this is where the story gets extremely bizarre) – which lays out a buffet of extreme Islamophobia, far-right Zionism, as well as attacks on Marxism and multiculturalism, for good measure.
