Being hated is no fun. Few of us are like those pantomime villains who glory in the hisses and boos of an audience. And few people hate being hated more than Americans. I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked the plaintive question: “Why do they hate us?” and another for each of the different answers I’ve heard. It’s because of our foreign policy. It’s because of their extremism. It’s because of our arrogance. It’s because of their inferiority complex. Americans really hate not knowing why they’re hated.

The best explanation is in fact the simplest. Being hated is what happens to dominant empires. It comes – sometimes literally – with the territory. George Orwell knew the feeling. As a young man he served as an assistant police superintendent in British-run Burma, an experience he memorably described in his essay “Shooting an Elephant”. Called upon to kill a rogue pachyderm that had run amok, Orwell was suddenly aware “of the watchful yellow faces behind” him:

“The sole thought in my mind was that if anything went wrong those two thousand Burmans would see me pursued, caught, trampled on and reduced to a grinning corpse like that Indian up the hill. And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh.”

One of the popular post-9/11 sentiments has been the one that holds that Muslims are bent on conquering the world. The notion is that Muslims hate Christianity and Western freedom and values and that such hatred is rooted in the Koran and stretches back centuries. Thus, the United States has been drawn, reluctantly, into a war against Muslims. That’s why U.S. forces are in Iraq and Afghanistan, the argument goes — to defend our freedoms by killing Muslims over there before they get over here and kill us.

I sometimes wonder whether the people who have this mindset have reflected on the ramifications of their belief.

For example, if Muslims in general are at war with the United States, then why shouldn’t Americans be out killing Muslims here in the United States? After all, when a nation is at war, isn’t it permissible to kill the enemy? Isn’t that what war is all about?

The reason that proponents of this view don’t start killing Muslims here in the United States is very simple: Deep down, they know that the killers will be indicted by their very own government for murder. They will then be prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced to serve time in a federal penitentiary for murder.

Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga, who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio, has told Italy’s oldest and most widely read newspaper that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad, and that this was common knowledge among global intelligence agencies. In what translates awkwardly into English, Cossiga told the newspaper Corriere della Sera:

Much of America’s foreign policy since 9/11 has been based on the assumption that it was attacked by Muslims on that day. This assumption was used, most prominently, to justify the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is now widely agreed that the use of 9/11 as a basis for attacking Iraq was illegitimate: none of the hijackers were Iraqis, there was no working relation between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, and Iraq was not behind the anthrax attacks. But it is still widely believed that the US attack on Afghanistan was justified. For example, the New York Times, while referring to the US attack on Iraq as a “war of choice,” calls the battle in Afghanistan a “war of necessity.” Time magazine has dubbed it “the right war.” And Barack Obama says that one reason to wind down our involvement in Iraq is to have the troops and resources to “go after the people in Afghanistan who actually attacked us on 9/11.”

Boston Globe” — THE OTHER DAY I went to hear my favorite soldier-scholar, Andrew Bacevich, give a talk at Boston University, where he teaches. A retired colonel and Vietnam veteran, Bacevich’s new book is called “The Limits of Power, The end of American Exceptionalism.”

Bacevich has migrated from a conservative outlook to what might be called a neo-Niebuhrean position – his thinking being influenced by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, whom Bacevich calls “the most clear-eyed of American prophets.”

Niebuhr warned against “dreams of managing history,” a combination of arrogance and narcissism that posed a moral threat. That’s why Niebuhr is often held in contempt by neo-conservatives for whom power is everything. Bacevich’s concern is that the dream has become a physical threat that could lead to America’s inevitable decline.

Tanggal 12 Oktober 2002, tepat satu tahun lebih satu bulan lebih satu hari setelah peristiwa 11 September 2001 (atau biasa dikenal dengan sebutan WTC 911 yang terjadi di Amerika Serikat), terjadi ledakan dahsyat di Bali. Tiga tahun kemudian, 01 Oktober 2005, terjadi lagi ledakan di pulau yang sama dengan titik lokasi kejadian berbeda.

Bila diperhatikan jarak Bom Bali pertama dengan kedua berselang tiga tahun, ada yang mengkhawatirkan jangan-jangan di tahun 2008, khususnya di bulan Oktober ini, akan terjadi ledakan serupa di pulau yang sama. Namun Alhamdulillah, sampai saat tulisan ini dibuat, kejadian seperti tahun 2002 dan 2005 itu tidak terjadi.

Bali sejak awal 1970-an telah menjadi pulau pariwisata. Namun, industri pariwisata yang berkembang di Bali sama sekali tidak bertitik tolak dari eksotika budaya Bali, tidak sekedar menjual keindahan Bali dengan segala kehidupannya yang bernapaskan Hindu. Tetapi, pariwisata di Bali adalah industri yang menjajakan seks bebas, drug, narkoba, perjudian, dan segala bentuk maksiat lainnya. Di samping itu, industri pariwisata di Bali tidak menghormati tempat-tempat suci umat Hindu Bali. Contohnya, laut menuju Pulau Serangan dengan Pura Sakenan warisan Danghyang Nirartha ditimbun investor, sehingga orang Bali tidak lagi bisa berkunjung untuk menjalani ritual ke Pura Sakenan. Selain itu, di seberang Pura Tanah Lot dibangun lapangan golf dan hotel mewah Nirwana Resort.

Ironisnya lagi, kontribusi dunia pariwisata terhadap upaya pemeliharaan tempat-tempat suci orang Hindu di Bali, amat tidak signifikan. Barangkali, inilah hasil yang dipetik dari diterapkannya pluralisme dan toleransi ala Bali sejak 1970-an.

October 19, 2008 Uncovering the Israeli-Republican-Evangelical Networks behind the “Obsession” DVD Something strange has been showing up inside the Sunday newspapers of millions of Americans the past few weeks.   The material being included alongside comics, coupons, and advertisement for local stores is a controversial DVD called “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West.”   Some 28 million copies of this DVD have been distributed for free so far in this fashion. In some ways the scale of this campaign, and its ideological venom, are unprecedented: many newspapers state that they had never previously distributed free DVDs as inserts, certainly nothing with such a charged content. The copies were distributed not randomly across the country, but in the “swing states” (Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, etc.) that are seen as a toss-up in the November Presidential elections between McCain and Obama. Obviously, someone is trying to influence the American electorate by playing on fear-mongering and hate-mongering themes. But who? Who is behind this massive, multi-million dollar campaign?
